Depressed keys on Macbook Pro 15" C2D

Hi All,
I've had a new Macbook Pro for about 3 weeks and I already have, what seems to be, semi-permanently depressed keys; in affect the keys I've used most (e.g. R for reloading a page in Safari) are noticably lower than others - when pressing these keys they have less 'travel' making it disconcerting to use. Quite frankly there is now an array of different depths now across the keyboard.
I plan to call Apple support on tomorrow but wondered if anyone else had experienced a similar situation?
Thanks,
Ian.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It would be worthwhile turning off your keyboard repeat rate in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and mouse and seeing what happens. You are using only the built-in keyboard and trackpad?

My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).
The left shift key behaves the same on the laptop keyboard and on an external Apple keyboard.
This just started in last week after 6 months of use.  The right shift key and other keys on the keyboard all appear to work correctly.
    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support.  Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences.  Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key).  I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility.  The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

  • My return key on Macbook pro doesn't work

My return key on Macbook Pro stopped working, also the shift key

    Hello there,
It sounds like the return key is not working on your computers built in keyboard. I would use these steps from the following article to help isolate and resolve the issue:
Try logging into a different user account. If the issue does not occur when logged into a different user account, then troubleshoot for software issues.
You may have accidentally set an option that changes how your keyboard operates.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, and then click “Text to Speech.” If “Speak selected text when the key is pressed” is selected, deselect it or press Set Key to select another key.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, and then click Keyboard. Make sure Slow Keys is turned off. If Slow Keys is on, you must hold down a key longer than usual before it’s recognized.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Language & Text, and then click Input Sources. Select the checkbox next to Keyboard & Character Viewer, and then select “Show Input menu in menu bar.” Open the Input menu and make sure the correct keyboard layout is selected. To see the keyboard layout, choose Show Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu.

  • The Insert Key in Macbook Pro (Middle 2009)

    Hello,
I'm looking for the Insert Key in the Macbook Pro.
    I found that : http://www.hjaltilava.info/2009/07/01/insert-key-on-macbook-pro-keyboard/
I tried it, but it didn't work.
This key is necessary in a simulator like FlightGear.
    Someone have idea ?
    Thanks !

SnqKe, there is no Insert key to find for the Mid 2009 MacBook Pro.
Software such as [KeyRemap4MacBook|http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook> can allow the emulation of keys not on the keyboard. If it doesn’t already have an option to emulate an Insert key, the author of KeyRemap4MacBook is quite willing to add new options to the software — he has added a few on my request.
For FlightGear in particular, it comes with its own key binding files, so even without any key remapping software installed, you could modify FlightGear’s data/input/keyboard.xml file to change the key of the script that is normally bound to the Insert key.

  • Out of the box macbook pro 15" c2d problems

    evening all,
right out of the box, i have had kernel panics every time i boot my new macbook pro c2d. i have also had the awake from sleep problem some people seem to be having. i am also unable to install either boot camp, parallels, or vmware. i have tried winxp, 2000 and vista in every combination. every time i try it corrupts the volume beyond repair and i have to wipe the hard drive and reinstall os x. i am getting worn out by banging my head against the wall. i thought this stuff was supposed to be easy. when i went to check on the firmware version for my macbook pro 15" c2d i noticed that i have the boot rom version and the smc version installed for original 17" macbook pro not the c2d version. it won't let me change the firmware back to a 15" c2d. it is showing MBP12.0061.B03 1.5f10 and i should have MBP22.00A5.B00 1.12f5 according to apple specs.
i will try to reset my smc, but the pram can not be reset via the usual keyboard combination because it just doesn't work like it did on my powerbook.
i am also going to try disabling the hibernate mode as suggested via terminal.
i am going to try trashing the plist preferences for the .AutoWake, PowerManagement and the systemuiserver.
i also have the problem when reinstalling os x several times that the optical drive gets stuck reading the original system disks and i have to start all over again. whew!!!
btw, i am a hardware tech but this is too much of a waste of time.
any other suggestions are very welcome.

here is an update for everyone, or at least you will get a good laugh out of it. I sent the macbook to applecare to be fixed and I just got it back. they replaced the harddrive and restored the os.
guess what? I turned it on and it had a kernel panic! then I tried to set up a user account and it had a ......... kernel panic! I had to laugh, what else can you do at this point?
they didn't fix what i told the tech support guy was the biggest issue on this machine. the boot room version is still MBP21.00a5.B01 which is for the 17" C2D. it is paired with the smc version 1.12f5 which is the version apple has listed for the 15" version. tried to change the boot room but it tells me it does not need the correction. everyone knows best yet i still get ....... kernel panics.....! lmao
here is the last kernel panic log if anyone is interested:

hey everyone, i currently own a 2.4ghz core 2 duo 13" macbook pro (2010) and im thinking of replacing it with the newest mac book air. i use photoshop and adobe lightroom for photo editing. i also am learning final cut pro. my intent is to not have this as my only machine but to buy a mac pro once it recieves an upgrade/refresh. how well does the newest macbook air handle compared to my macbook pro c2d (my c2D is running maxed out memory 8gb and i have a 1tb hard drive installed -wd10jpvt-)

Hi fabiosx. As far as my knowledge goes, there is no option on my Mid 2011 21.5" iMac that says "Enable this iMac as a external Display." I may be wrong, so I suggest if you have an Apple Store near you, wander up to the Genius Bar and talk to them. If they say it's gonna cost you, just ask one of the staff memebers and they can probably look it up on those fancy gadgets they have around their neck!

  • Red or White Keys for MacBook Pro 2011

  • Left shift key on MacBook Pro (10.7.5) malfunction... how to reset?

I have a mid-2011 MacBook Pro, OS 10.7.5. After a water spill, the left shift key on the keyboard now operates as an options key by default. I cannot figure out how to reset the left shift key to perform shift functions by default. Any ideas?

Water spill more than likely damaged your shift key if that was the only key that is damaged.  Did you let your MBP dry completely (48-78 hrs) prior to using it?

  • Disable F-keys on Macbook Pro keyboard?

    Hey,
As I sometimes use my Macbook Pro for work (programming that is), I sometimes need the F-keys for shortcuts the programs I use. (For instance, IDEA).
Is there some way to disable - temporarily - the OS X shortcuts on the F-keys so other programs can use them?
    Thanks in advance!

Use the checkbox in the "Keyboard" tab of "Keyboard" system preference.

  • Fn key on macbook pro

What is the fn key used for on the macbook pro? Is there a default short cut for replace edit, overwrite etc? Its normally the f10, f11 key etc but I cant figure it out on macbook pro...
    Thanks!

is there a way to reverse the (fn) function?
what i mean is that when i push "F10" i get "F10" then when push "fn"+"F10" I get the 'iLife keyboard fun buttons'.
I'd prefer to have my Function keys as primary, then for fun stuff i'd be more than willing to push the (fn) key

  • Function Keys on macbook pro

I recently made the switch (after a year of pining) from an ibook G4 to a macbook pro. I love the computer, however, I find myself missing some of the function keys that were on the previous model (mainly the F9 and F10 that used to show all the windows for a certain program and all the windows currently open). Is there anyway to reprogram the current keys so that they reflect the old fuctions? (right now they control the brightness of the keyboard, which I don't particularly care to have as a 'hot key').

The only way is to go to System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard tab, check the box for Use F1, F2 etc. as standard function keys. However, this will apply to all the F keys - display brightness, volume, etc. There is no way to get around this, unfortunately.
    Alternatives are:
    1) activate those functions (which are called Expose, by the way) using hot corners (moving the pointer to a corner).
    2) assign other key combinations to them.
Set either of those up in System Preferences > Dashboard & Expose.
    Hope this helps...

  • Radeon X1600 Driver - Macbook Pro 17" C2D

I know this topic appears elsewhere; I am re-asking because there hasn't been progress that I can find anywhere here or on the web.
Boot Camp using Leopard, the X1600 driver does not work for the Macbook Pro 17" Core 2 Duo, 2.33Ghz. There are complaints of the problem, but no resolutions to be found.
    - Will the beta x1600 driver work in the 10.5 version of Boot Camp (v2?)?
    - Does anyone know where that driver can be found for download?
    - Are there any workarounds that anyone knows of? A generic driver perhaps?
Sorry if this is re-asking - I wouldn't unless I was at my ends.

I have been waiting for a fix for this, I'm beginning to believe it's never going to happen. My screen flickers like there's no tomorrrow in Vista and The Mac Genius told me that there is nothing that can be done. He said that Apple will only support boot camp itself, not what's installed on it. I said, "But it's Apple's X1600 Driver, shouldn't they support that? He shrugged and said there was nothing he could do. So, I found a post much like the one above that had me attempt to hack a fireGL driver into running in Vista on my x1600. It worked in that Vista says I am now running a MackbookPro FireGL V5200 when I look in Device manager, but I still have the flicker issue. If I choose certain shades of bluish backgrounds, it makes it look as if the whole screen has dot crawl. I have tried Power Strip and countless other hopeful remedies with no luck. I am by no means a novice Mac or PC user, but this problem is making me feel like one. Apple, please fix this! Thanks, I love apple and I love Macs, but my PC friends are laughing at the disco show that my awsome 17" display turns into every time I boot into Vista. Hellllp. By the way, they don't laugh when I boot into Leopard because they know Vista is craptacular. ; ) Please help...

  • Z key in macbook pro pops up on right side. Little pin on scissor clip underneath has broken. No stress on computer, is this apple covered? Otherwise where do I get a new scissor clip. Less than 3 months old.

On the Z key, the little scissor clip underneath on the right hand side has two little pointy bits which connect to the key, the top one of these has broken off and the key is barely hanging on, if pushed on the right side of the key, it pops up. I tried to push it back in but it keeps popping up.
My mac is less than 3 months old. The computer has been treated well and has not been used rough or treated badly, I imagine it's just an accident while typing or a weak clip.
Is this covered by Apple, if not where do I buy a new clip for under the key? -
