Hi all,
I'm looking to update the 'Description Meta Tag' of my website, in the HTML is it this section I need to update: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> If it is, is there a word/character limit I can input in Dreamweaver?

No, that's not the Description <meta> tag. It's the character encoding <meta> tag.
To insert the Description <meta> tag in Dreamweaver, go to the Insert panel, and select the Common category from the menu. Click the down arrow alongside Head, and select Description.
That opens a dialog box where you can write your description. There is no limit on how long the description can be, but it should normally be no more than about 20 words. If you write more, it will be ignored by search engines.

Quotation Marks in Description Meta Tag

I want to put quotation marks around a book title in a description meta tag. When I add them using the Description field in Properties, Dreamweaver substitutes " for the quotation mark. I know it is doing this because the content= is in quotes. Will the quotation marks show up okay using these html entities in all search engine results that display what is in my description meta tag?
Also, does it work okay to use html. like <em> </em> in head meta tags?

You're spitting into the wind with this. Descriptions in your meta tags are displayed by some but not all search engines. And the manner in which your meta descriptions appear on SERPs is totally out of your control. USE ALL CAPS for BOOK TITLES. Regular case for all the rest.

Dynamic Description Meta tag?

I have a dynamic site that is primarily table driven. I would
like to change the contents of the meta description dynamically so
that the description matches information on the page that is
currently being displayed.
For example: If the page pulls up the product "eye brow
plucker"
I would like the meta description tag to read information in
my table so it will describe my "eye brow plucker"

How do I set up Description meta tag on pages

Hi, I have set up page titles but can't see how to set up description on pages. Any help appreciated.

I saw in a previous post that you mentioned that in V3, you cannot change the meta description via the properties button in the text editor (under Manage > Pages). I am having an issue with this too. I need to edit my meta description; however, when i do, the change never shows up. It only shows the initial meta description set for that page. I can't figure out any other way to change that description.

Code, description, meta tags?

I used to use Frontpage, I changed and barely understand Dreamweaver, so I finally tried iWeb. I love how easy it is (since the website is important but I'm not a computer whiz!), yet for SEO, I don't see how to make it work. Other than trying to upload the pages to, say GoDaddy, and do it by hand (as if I knew how), is there a way to add these things to iWeb as you build?
Do I even make sense??? LOL

Just a reminder: It is now confirmed that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
◼ Password protection
◼ Blog and photo comments
◼ Blog search
◼ Hit counter
◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken. If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
In addition the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on.
HOWEVER, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those copies still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD.

dreamwaver 8
i'm currently can't find where to write down my key words and
descriptions on the meta tag and page description place on
dreamwave . please advise step by step as i'm a beginner

The code you show *already* has a keywords and description
META tag in
place. So - what is your question? You would either modify
the currently
existing ones or replace them with new ones. And the keywords
meta is
pretty useless as has already been suggested.

I use this one to keep Windows from popping up that annoying
and distracting

Your template file needs not be on the server, only on your
development machine - so search engines do not see your
template.

Hello,
Could you tell me if it's possible to create HTML output of an ADF page, that has "description" and "keywords" meta tags in the head? Something like:

I know the SEO results may not be great, but I'd still like to use it, just to make it as good as possible for search engines.

I didn't see any examples or have time to test, but you can certainly try putting the meta tags in that facet.
Update: all of the examples I can find show how to inject javascript into the metacontainer, but it should give you an idea how to do it for <meta> tags. Are Meta tags or descriptions the best way for your website to get picked up by Google, Bing, & Yahoo? Or do you have to pay them for better results? Thanks!

On the other hand – what concerns "Olde Worlde Lace's “that neither it nor this forum say much about“ there was a very interesting thread here in the forum about SEO, which I remember.
1) Fully understand your markup language.
2) Work first BEFORE anything on CONTENT not on black hat "tricks" and or on white hat inbound links.
3) Expand the content so that you become an authority on the subject of the keyword phrases you wish to appear well ranked for.
4a) Avoid the error of going all over the internet looking for the "ONE WAY TO SUCCESS" posts. There is NO such thing. Google does not rank all sites and blogs by the same values. Some are simply in the top ten for middle to complex keywords and keyword phrases because of their AGE and the AUTHORITY factor (that they contain original content with good outbound links WHILE OTHER BLOGS AND SITES are listed in the top ten ON REGIONAL search because of inbound links (example: You are better ranked on Google.FR if you have FRENCH blogs from FRENCH servers linking to you as well as being yourself hosted on a FRENCH dot fr domain or a in France hosted dot com). And there are certain pages which are ranked simply by the volume of search requests for that page. And then there are others which appear and remain in the top ten because they are rated by Google with what is called PageRank .... and on and on.
In other words before you end up getting depressed and giving in to purchasing Adwords (sponsored links) try the following:
4b) Set a routine. Make this routine involve an hour at least per day to UPDATING and EXPANDING your content. Use PDF files (learn how to optimize meta tags and onpage PDF alt text and Accessibility). Expand with images which have BEFORE YOU UPLOAD THEM been right clicked to add (on your computer) meta information to the image files. Make sure to name your image info TRUTHFULLY (Google can read the content of images) so do not call it PARIS HILTON and ME unless it is a photo of you and Paris. Use the "+" sign between keywords. Per example if indeed it is a picture of you with Paris Hilton in Saint Tropez in the summer of 2008 then you might wish to name the image: YourFullnameInOneword+ParisHilton+SaintTropez+France+2008.jpg - note that some image formats do not allow for meta tags. Also be aware that as soon as you start tagging your images these keywords will be READ BY THE ROBOTS as they crawl your markup - so DO NOT SPAM your image titles and have DIFFERENT image tittles. Also place your images in a 2 deep folder system on your server AND ALWAYS LINK TO THE IMAGE WITH THE FULL URI / URL.
4c) Next spend a few hours reading a good BOOK about SEO. There are several. The best I have found is by DAVID VINEY and called "Get to the Top on Google" (Published by Nicholas Brealey Publishing - London, Boston). This book will give you tips and techniques to get your site to the of the search engine rankings and stay there. Also read the archives of Vanessa Fox's Blog - www.ninebyblue.com/blog/ (HGD now > http://www.ninebyblue.com/blog/seo/).
5) Set your objective to 3 keywords or keyword phrases per page.
6) Start to NAME YOUR PAGES with your keywords and name your folders as well - but try to do this ALL in small letters with dashes between words.
7) Install Google Webmaster Tools.
8) Make and add a XML sitemap and update this on Google Webmaster Tools. (And get Google Analytics)
9) Start to seek IN THE TEXT BODY PageRank 5 and higher "follow links"
(see here info about NOFOLLOW links on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nofollow).
10) Take a break and start again - the key to success is WORK. Nothing else will give you lasting success as honest effort.

Online .pdf documents, meta tags; title, keywords, descriptions. search engines

Hi. In DW 8.0.
I searched the forums for this but was unable to find the answer.
I would like to have meta tags in my .pdf files that are on the web.
When someone does a search for one of them in Google or Yahoo!, it reads the title in a bizarre upper & lower case letter pattern under the search results page.
"ExaMPLe SAMple tiTLE"
Correct me if I am wrong, but Google creates source code for .pdfs so others can search for them, but I do not understand why the title looks the way it does.
I was hoping by changing the title meta tag in the actual .pdf using Acrobat would solve this, but I am waiting to see if this will work.
Does anyone know of a better way of changing/adding the meta tags to an online .pdf document?

PDF is a print document.
HTML is a web document.
AFAIK, meta tags are found only in web documents.
Soluiton would be to convert your PDFs to HTML pages and use your own meta tags and titles.

Changing Meta Tags and description on SWF

Hey guys. I bought a template, made some changes, published it and upload it on FTP. But each time I do a search, one one the search results is one of the orignal page names. Any tips on how to change it?

Adding meta tags to published web site

I have created my website using iWeb and subsequently downloaded the RAVE SEO tool and used it to add for meta tags to my sites (description and keywords).
I followed this procedure:
1) I published my site from iWeb to a local folder on my iMac
2) I added the meta tags using the RAVE SEO tool
3) I tried to publish the site to my webhotel with tags added using the ftp tool in the RAVE SEO tool.
PROBLEM:
when I publish from the SEO tool, it is the old sites which are published. In my local folder where I started out publishing the web site to, I can see that the tags from description and keywords have been added. But the site which is published does not contain the tags.
I have a feeling that the SEO tool is looking in a wrong foder, but I cannot change the folder using the "FTP Details" funktion in the SEO tool.
Do anyone have a suggestion for what to do?

When you click publish and choose FTP you can create a new setup or use an existing one.
And if you do not know which folder to publish to, click browse. You decide.
