Deselecting iPhoto as preferred destination

I inadvertently selected the option of automatically using iPhoto as my destination when the Mac detects digital images, as from a camera or from a card reader. There used to be a pop-up that would ask where I want the images to go, for example, when I connected my camera or the card reader to the Mac. That pop-up no longer appears, and the images are loaded directedly into iPhoto. I wish to be asked each time the destination I prefer for each download, but I can't find my way to do that in Preferences or any other place. I have iPhoto 4.0.
Thank you for your help.
Les

Hi, Les. I'm not aware of any way you can elect to be prompted to choose an application each time you connect an image source to your Mac. You can, however, choose not to have any application open, or choose a different application instead of iPhoto. That's done in the Preferences of Image Capture, the intermediary application that "feeds" your images to the application of your choice, or to no application.
Open Image Capture, ignore (don't dismiss) the "No Image Capture device connected" alert box, choose Preferences from the File menu, click the "Camera" tab, and choose your preferred option from the drop-down menu.

  • How to deselect iPhoto as the default library viewer?

Hello everybody. I just got a Mac and I am thoroughly thrilled by iPhoto but I am already regretting setting the app as the default library viewer. I know I can find photos in the Finder by making iPhoto point me to the original file, but I just want to be able to see all my photos through finder. Under the folder names I choose. This issue is alarming also because I want to import 2000 photos from my old PC and I want them to be kept in the folders I have aready arranged. Again, I know I can view the originals (even though it's kinda weird the way they are organized in Finder now that iPhoto is the default library) and I know I can use  any image I want with other applications just by dragging them. But I just wanna see the file system. Any help will be deeply appreciated. Thanks for reading in advance

When you import a folder of  photos into iPhoto an Event will be created containing those photos with the same name as the folder had.  So you can keep all of your photos in the same folder grouping as you had previously.  You just can't have events inside other events as you do with folders.
However, you can add folders to the left hand pane of iPhoto and drag events into them to simuiplat the folder hierarchy you had on the PC.
Since you're looking for a folde/filer management system instead of a database digital asset management system iPhoto is not the application for you. There is a DAM application  that will do exactly what you want. It called Media Pro 1.  It's a professional DAM application.  It's what I use to manage my photos and then use iPhoto for special projects like books, calendars, slideshows, etc.

  • Deselecting IPhoto as default viewer

I choose to use a different software as my default image viewer from camera card, but for the life of me, I can not figure out how to make iPhoto not open automatically when I insert a Compact Flash card into my reader. HELP?

Launch "Image Capture" application; change preferences there.

  • Two Accounts sharing iPhoto library - iPod access rights error solution

I followed the advice given in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198 to share a single iPhoto library on an external drive between two users. It worked well.
...until both my wife and I tried to connect iPods while in our individual logins and attempted to sync photos from an album in iPhoto.
Mine worked, but my wife's responded with, "The iPod "name" cannot be synced. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation."
    Having seen this thread;
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4872555&#4872555
I realized that the iPod iPhoto cache, made visible by right-clicking the iPhoto Library and Showing Package Contents, was specific to my iTunes library and not my wife's. I could sync photos, but my wife could not.
I copied the iPhoto cache to a folder with my name on it, deleted the iPod iPhoto cache, and started iTunes under my wife's login. After setting the album she wanted to import, her photos synced without error.
Then I copied the iPod iPhoto cache to a folder with my wife's name.
I leave set to work for her and then I swap out her iPod iPhoto Cache and copy in my when I want to add new photos. In the meantime I deselect iPhoto sync in my iTunes until such time as I want to alter the image collection on my iPod.
I tried to make an animator script, but didn't have much success with the cache being package content.

I copied the iPhoto cache to a folder with my name on it, deleted the iPod iPhoto cache, and started iTunes under my wife's login. After setting the album she wanted to import, her photos synced without error.
    should have said..

  • Ken Burns Effect in iDVD without iPhoto?

I was wondering if I can add the Ken Burns Effect in iDVD without having to make a slideshow in iPhoto and exporting.

This seems very inefficient to me. So in order to get motion slideshows, you have to export the slideshow from iPhoto as a .mov file (or iMovie which is even less easy), which takes quite a long time (at least 10min or so?) even on my MBP 2ghz and chewed up 500mb for 5 minutes. I have 17 slideshows I'd like to put in one iDVD project - processing them one by one in this way is a real pain in the neck.
Hopefully, one day Apple will either:
    - allow you to queue slideshow exporting in iPhoto; or preferably
    - accept motion slideshows is a core functionality for iDVD in the same way transitioning slideshows are. iDVD could just call on the iPhoto app behind the scenes to process the motion slideshows, if they really didn't want to move all that code into iDVD.

  • IPhoto does not display png thumbnails correctly

I would love to use iPhoto to organize my scrapbooking graphics. Unfortunately, a great many are in png format with transparency. When imported, the transparent portions of the images are displayed in black. Many files are word art, which is generally rasterized text on a transparent background. The files will show at full size and will open correctly. That doesn't help if I want to look at a thumbnail gallery to scan for a particular file. (BTW, word art files need to have transparent backgrounds so converting to jpg doesn't help.)
This was an issue in 2006 with iPhoto 5 (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2755904&#2755904). I was hoping for a fix but apparently iPhoto is not destined to handle png thumbnails correctly.

That's normal for transparency files, png or gif, and iPhoto. It renders the transparency black. It's the nature of the beast. You can send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html. Some other applications have options to set the transparency color to the user's needs.

  • IPhoto: can't copy my library to another drive

I'm trying to back up (and ultimately move) my 94GB iPhoto library to an external harddrive and just before it finishes copying I get a message that says, "The Finder can't complete the operation because some date in "iPhoto Library" can't be read or written. (Error code - 36).  Is there a way for me to find what data might be corrupt so I can move my Library?  My Library is currently on an external drive Passport drive.

Sorry, I don't think I was clear;  the source drive is Windows FAT32 and has the iPhoto library, the destination drive is a Lacie formatted with Mac OS Extended and is empty.
I haven't been successful after four attempts to copy by dragging library to destination drive.

  • Keeps trying to link to mobileme and freezes iphoto

anyone have iphoto keep trying to "publish albums to mobileme"?

My iPhoto freezes when I open preferences. Is there another way around eliminating MobileMe? Maybe through deleting files in Library? System preferences won't let me log into MobileMe either so I can get into the sync section to deselect iPhoto. Any suggestions?

  • Reinstall iphoto 11

So I did the update and now my iPhone ( 4s ) crashes my iPhoto 9.3.2, so I need to revert to an earlier version which is downloading as I type. When iPhoto crashes it tends to hang the system up, forcing a reboot.

    Thanks for the question.
I installed the update from Apple. iPhoto going from 9.3.1 to 9.3.2, called an update.
I connected my iPhone to offload some images.
The application iPhoto crashes, and locks up the "whole OS".
So I seek instructions on "re-installing" the Application iPhoto. Preferable with losing the library ( yes, it is back up redundantly ( time machine/super duper ).
Pointer toward Apples instructions on reinstalling, on the road and do not have iLife disk. Early 2011 Macbook Pro.

  • Destination Folder

Hi, I just signed up to the creative cloud service and I am having a bit of trouble. It is constantly downloading and installing to my C drive which is a problem because my C drive is full. I am trying to find out how to direct the downloading and instalations to my D drive where I have plenty of space. In the adobe manager, I have set my prefered destination to my D drive, but it is still installing to the C drive. Help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Chilenodetictac you are always going to need space on your C drive to extract the install files.  In addition shared resources will also need to be installed on the drive which contains your operating system.  I would recommend freeing at least 5 gigabytes to allow for installation.
You can customize the installation location in the Adobe Application Manager.  This can be accomplished by going to the preferences in the top right hand corner from there you can choose the install destination.  Again as discussed though you will still need space on your drive to run the installer and to install the shared resources.

  • Where is the actual iPhoto photos data stored?

I'm trying to find the data files for iPhoto in OS X Lion, data used to be in the user Library, but I can't find that either. Where is the actual iPhoto photos data stored?

    1. Set the preferences to edit in another program, Photoshop. (Advanced Tab)
    2. Drag the image to the email message (the problem you describe should be fixed in 10.8.3)
    3. Select all the images in the event or album and show the Info pane.
    4. You have to export them first in order to compress, so either drag them out of iPhoto into the destination or use the Export command.
    5. Clunky? Works pretty great for me.
    6. I can access all of my photos right there in iPhoto. I can access other people's photos there, too.
If you don't want iPhoto to organize the files, tell it not to. Prefs, Advanced, Copy Items into the iPhoto Library.
If you didn't want someone to comment on this,
Seriously?  It is rediculous that we needed a forum to find our own files.
Then why did you post it?
Are you an Apple OS designer and are offended or something? Why are you even looking at this post if it's not an issue for you?
Look up the thread a ways.

  • Iphoto shuts down whenever I try to export

I am currently using iPhoto 8.1.2 and OS X (Maverick) 10.9.4. I recently purchased an external HD as my memory was filling up rapidly. I was exporting photos from iPhoto and about 1,000 went through and then iPhoto shut down "unexpectedly". Now whenever I try to export any photo from iPhoto to any destination (external HD, desktop, a file, etc...) the export starts and then iPhoto shuts down. I have been doing the exports by highlighting an album in iPhoto, hitting file, then export, and when it asks where I select the destination. It's strange because it was working and then just stopped. I have re-booted, ejected the external HD, but the issue remains. Do I need to bite the bullet and just upgrade iPhoto or is there a fix?
Thanks for any and all assistance.

This is because iPhoto 09 is not fully compatible with 10.9.4 and there is no known fix at this time, except upgrading to iPhoto 11.
If space is an issue, why not just move the Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Regards
    TD

If you used migration assistant then it probably created a new Login user and placed the migrated files under it.

  • IMAGE CAPTURE "against" IPHOTO ..

Who is using IMAGE CAPTURE, and not IPHOTO capture? Can you explain the main difference, advantage..etc
I had a trial with Lightroom found it great, bought it, should arrive soon, and I am also working with Photoshop.
What is the point for me to use IPhoto?
Which is the most "secure"( I want to load,to save without wondering if I am going to get" ! and a grey square"!
I don't really need the editing in I Photo...)? (My impression at this point is that IPhoto brought a lot of trouble...)...Thanks...

    Hello, florence,
I think you are getting the wrong idea about iPhoto. It is a great application that can make working with your photos easier. Most of us don't have problems with it. The discussions are for those who do have problems, so you will get a skewed idea of its trouble if you base your decision on what you find here.
iPhoto is a database application that lets you organize, arrange, edit, print and store your photos.
Image Capture is an application that you can utilize to download your photos in an organized manner to make it easier to import your photos into iPhoto.
I use Image Capture when I download photos from my husband's camera. He seems to leave old photos on his memory sticks forever. I don't want iPhoto to take the time to try to import all the photos I already have. So, I have Image Capture 'read' them, make thumbnails, and I select which ones I want to import and download them into a folder. I name the folder what I want the film roll to be and then drag the folder into iPhoto. I also want to keep my movie clips from my digital camera separately in their own folder, and Image Capture does this easily.
That said, if you don't want/need to edit in iPhoto, maybe you would prefer to use iViewMedia Pro. iViewMediaPro
It is more robust than iPhoto, has more options for maintaining titles/keywords when moving files. Old Toad, an iPhoto guru, prefers to keep his photos in iView and use iPhoto just for creating slideshows, cards and books. He explains it very well here

  • Why can't iMovie be updated from App Store or from updater?

In 2011 I purchased the iLife '11 package on CD for $80 directly from Apple. Since then I've updated the various iLife Apps without incident, until yesterday.
I  downloaded the iMoved 9.0.6 Updater and attempted to update v 9.0.4 to 9.0.6. The Updater throws up an Alert: "The version of iMovie installed on this Mac must be updated through the Mac App Store yadda yadda yadda."
Well, I didn't buy iLife, or iMovie, through the App Store but I went there and attempted to update iMovie. Naturally, it isn't in my list of purchased items, nor does it appear on the Update page. However, the App Store knows it is on my Mac because the purchase button is now an "Update" button.
So even with Dirty Harry's 45 aimed right between my eyes, I'm feeling lucky and I punch "UPDATE."
Bam! New Alert: "You have updates available for other accounts To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."
Thank you Apple! I don't have another account, or any other accounts. One account is enough! I don't need no stinking other accounts.
First Apple screws the pooch by turning Final Cut Pro into iMovie on Steriods, and now to update iMovie I have to log into an account I don't have.
    Adobe Premiere here I come.
While I can actually do without iMovie, I'm sure the next time I try to update another item from the iLife suite, I'll run into the same illogical problem, so better to solve it now.

    Dear Shade247,
When you bought your MacBook, did you get a restore DVD? Perhaps that DVD will restore iLife - I think there is a software restore disc that comes with the machines.
The only way I was able to fix my problem was to dig out my original iLife DVD and reinstall iMovie.
However, in doing so, the install also reinstalled iPhoto, but actually trashed it. For some reason deselecting iPhoto was not a custom install option. So, I had to then reinstall iPhoto as well.
Of course, once iPhoto was fixed and iMovie 9.0 was installed, and both working, I still couldn't update iMovie because v9.0.1 was the minimum requirement.
So, I had to scroll through pages of prior Apple updates until I found the iMovie 9.0.1 installer and download it. After 9 was updated to 9.0.1, the current 9.0.6 updater worked fine.
I can't wait until Apple realeases a new version of iPhoto and iMovie so I can go through this all over again.
Apple listen? Don't hold your breath!
    Good luck!
