Design a real outdoor phone

Is it just me that is finding Nokia's line of "rugged" sports phones a little hard to bear?
For a start, the 5500's "rugged" design results in the keypad coming off after a couple of months use. Hardly rugged. Secondly, a "rugged" phones functions should reflect the environment it is being used in.
I regularly go trekking and would love to have a phone that has a flashlight, compass, thermometer and can be dropped and keep on working. Sure, if it can take good pictures, has a decent screen and other nifty features, they are a bonus.
But do the basics first! That means - splash proof, shock proof, wears very well, is not too heavy, has standard features such as compass, thermometer, flashlight, phone and take reasonable pics. Everything else on top of this is a nice to have. If you lack any/all of these features, you ain't a "rugged" phone, you are a hack.
I am sticking with my 5400i, at least for some time Nokia got it right.
Am I the only one that thinks this?

No, you are not alone! :-)
Agree totally. It's about time Nokia introduce an up to date upgrade of the 5140i. I am still holding on to my old 5140i, In my opinion, the 5500 is more aimed at the fitness segment, and neither this, nor the newer GPS (should be part of a modern outdoor phone) models rugged enough.
Garmin has the rugged GPS style units and lots of features, but with no phone..
Nokia has everything else, but lack the ruggedness...
Phone, GPS, flashlight, compass, thermometer, altimeter, PDA, blue tooth. In essence: all the good features of 5140 but updated...
I know a lot of outdoor enthusiasts that would welcome a real and updated outdoor phone..
Should we design one ourselves? :-)

  • How to implement programs written in j2me to real mobile phones..

    hi,
As i'm new to this technology I wonder how I can run my program in the real mobile phones. What are the things required to transfer codes from the computer to mobile phones and what is required to run those programs in the mobile phones...
    regards,
    Jay

There are a few posibilities and not all device with support all of them
    1. via a webserver where you put the jad and jar file of your application. The webserver needs to have the correct mime types setup, and then you can simple browse to that url with your device, and install the application
    2. via the datacable or bleutooth: sometimes you can access the phones filesystem and install the application, somethimes you'll have to upload the application with some application. All very device dependant...

  • Books about MVVM, architecture, design patterns for Windows Phone 8.1

    Hi,
I'm looking for a book or books (or other resources) that explain how to develop an app with a proper architecture. I mean what each layer (bussines layer, data layer, network access) should do and how should it look like. I'm also looking for a book about
    MVVM.
Right now I'm struggling with how to create a layer for network communication - how to separate classes for requests and responses, how to manage requests and create some queue of requests and also to provide some way to cancel them when they are no longer
needed, how to work with servers that use some level of security (cookies, certificates etc.).
Another thing is caching - how to design a short-term cache or a persistant cache (database), what technologies I can use etc.
Last thing that I'm struggling with is also naming. How to name classes in those layers, e.g. to distinguish between classes mapping data from some ORM database, for mapping on JSON in network communication. etc.
I hope you got the idea :)
    Thanks.

Currently, I don't find a book about MVVM pattern for Windows Phone 8.1, but I think MSDN and some blogs have some useful samples and conceptions: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/jj883732.aspx
    http://channel9.msdn.com/Series/Windows-Phone-8-1-Development-for-Absolute-Beginners
And I think your question includes too much scopes, maybe you need to split it into some blocks and get help in the related forum

  • After i designed a website for desk top how do i save the site for cell phone

after i designed a website for desk top how do i save the site for cell phone use

I don't think you can simply save a desktop design as a cell phone design.  While in Muse and in the site plan view for you website you should see three tabs near the top of the page.  If you click the "Phone" tab, you will get a pop-up dialog box asking which element you would like to copy over from your desktop site (if any).  You must then design the site for cell phone use.  You can use the same objects, pictures, etc. from your desktop site and Muse should automatically optimize those elements for phone use.  However, Muse does not automatically take a desktop design and create a cell phone design from it.
As I understand it, Muse uses user-agent detection to decide which site it wants to display to the user. You however, need to create the different versions of your site so that Muse can apply a specific design for the intended use.

hello, i bought this phone. But i have a doubt. Is that a real lenovo phone or a counterfeit ? i'm affraid of buying fake lenovo... the seller it's "Best mobile phone stores"(Lucy huang), thanks for response.

"keygen.exe" is a programme designed to generate fake Serial Numbers. There's no reason for it to be on a genuine Adobe disk.
Genuine Adobe software also requires Internet access.

this is the code that  I use to login.  but on windows phone cant import Mysql connector. not sure why... any suggestion how to deal with this?
or should I use SQLite? I dont know nothing about the code on SQLite...

If this is supposed to work just on the phone then SQLite or a Local database.

For small amounts of data, serializing and deserializing classes to isolated storage is faster.
Phones aren't always connected to the interweb.
Even if you are planning on using a central database on some server and connecting via services, you will almost always also need to store some data locally.
It's in your interest to ask questions in the appropriate forum for the technology you're using.
As it is, you're asking wpf developers a question about windows store app development.
    It's similar but different.
Which is probably why Magnus is unaware of local database and I probably omitted something else.
    It's not what we do.
I've written a grand total of one windows store apps.
Magnus probably has a similar level of experience.
    Hope that helps.

  • N8 - Headphones (awful design)

I am delighted with my N8.
However, I think the headphone design is awful.  I cannot imagine why on earth the designer has decided to have the lead from the controller to one earpiece shorter than the other.  All that happens is that you finish up with a loop of wire sticking out at the longest side.  Nokia to my knowledge have not done this before, so why start now?  I prefer the fact that the earpieces actually fit into the ear, rather than the type that just rest on the earlobe but apart from that, I think that the N82 design of my previous phone was far better.  It even allowed a different set of earpieces to be plugged into the controller but even this is not possible with the N8 design because it is all one piece.
Does anyone know of an alternative headphone that can be used with the N8.  (The N82 one does not appear to be compatible because it produces a lot of background noise.)
    History: Always Nokia since 1994 including Nokia 2140, 7110e, 6150, 6210, 6310i, 6230i, N82
Current: Nokia N8 (Anna - I have no intention of going to Belle) - and delighted with it!

Many headset makers do this, not just nokia so you can't really blame the nokia designers for that one! Nokia has used this type with other past models.
It's so that the wire goes behind your neck and that you can take them out of your ears and leave them around your neck without them falling to the floor. If worn correctly they look perfectly normal.
Like most manufacturers they never give the best ones away for free with the phone.
I use a standard set of sony earbud style headphones with mine as I don't like the extra weight the controls give.
    You may find alternatives here:

  • How to run SMSDemo from WTK2 in a real HP (SE K500i)?

    Hello J2ME experts out there,
Is there a way to run the SMSDemo from Wireless Toolkit 2 in a real Handphone? How?
I've tried to deploy it to my SE K500i, which AFAIK has supported WMA 1.1, but had no luck in sending nor receiving SMS. When I tried to send sms, it only showed a message "Sending message to +628124524", but apparently it didn't send anything, because the destination number never received the sms. The receiving part is even worse, when I clicked "Receive sms" from the menu, a "Application Error" message appeared.
Is this due to the way I deployed it? Does it have to be deployed using OTA? Because I only transferred the jar file directly from pc to my handphone using IrDA. Or is it due to the app not knowing the SMS center number where the message has to be sent through? How to tell the app which SMS center number of the operator it must use? I don't know which part of the coding or command to set this thing. Or the WMA will discover this automatically? What about the port setting? I don't know how to determine and where to find the port number to use.
I need to make an application to send sms using WMA, therefore I have to know how to make this SMSDemo run in a real hand phone.
I'm quite a newbie in J2ME. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I made some changes and it worked, really I don't know which one of those was the effective one. I will continue searching.
First, in forums say that you need to quit all the permissions ( Really I dont think its the answer) At least, that thinks avoid t have an error message, "Authorization Failure".
    Second, Quit Push Registry...
avoid use of , in SMSSend , I dont' know why In mi phone 6600 didn't work
    -->>> smsPort = getAppProperty("SMS-Port");
    try
    smsPort=new String("50000");
    or in SMSSender, just use
    -->address = destinationAddress;
    See ya

  • Service Identification and Design

    Hi Forum,
I am interested in how you folks are doing service identification and design in real world.
IBM has SOMA methodology where you can do top down design by identify your processes and identify services using domain decoposition.
Does Oracle have same kind of methodology and tools?
I would like to know how you go from processes to services and design the service contracts using Oracle tools..
Can you please share your experiences..
    Thanks
    CK

    Hi,
Oracle has a tool called Oracle BPA (Business Process Architect), which is primarily based on the ARIS methodology and techology tools for service identification and design. You can do a top-down design and it also provides you with the functionality of convering your actual diagrams into source code (and vise versa, which much procaution).
Please have a look at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/bpa/index.html for further details
    Thanks

  • No EOF when socket closed by mobile phone

    Hi,
i have a mobile phone connected with TCP/IP to my internet server using GPRS.
When i close the server the mobile phone gets an IOException which is what i expect.
When i close the mobile application in the emulator i get an EOF on the server side socket - OK.
    But:
When i close the mobile application on a real mobile phone, the server socket does NOT show any EOF - the connection remains from the point of view of the server.
    How can this be?
    Thanks
    Marcel

Try covering the cables to your BT Vision box with tin foil (Aerial, Scart/ HDMI & Ethernet) which should radiate some of the interference.
Maybe it's something to do with something in your property?

  • E6 + Belle = most advanced Nokia's business phone ...

What is a MUST for business phone on the ONE FIRST HOMESCREEN :
    1) Clock
    2) E-Mail
    3) Calendar
And this is - AT LEAST !
Nokia – are you kidding? It’s real business phone now with Belle?

    @strelamcqueen: Full ACK!
There are very few good business phones out in the wild.
Better get an iPhone? Well, have fun typing and using the castrated calender and contact manager.
Better get an Android? Ok, there's the Desire Z from HTC which has a neat hardware keyboard. Trying to sync your data with Outlook? Have fun finding an app that actually doesn't screw up at this.
Better get a Blackberry? Well, probably the most reasonable alternative.
If I read the words "iPhone" and "Android" in the same context as "business phone", I honestly believe this to be a good joke!
Sorry guys, Nokia's current portfolio of Symban-powered business phones are the devices actually satsifying business needs (besides Blackberry, probably). I have not seen a single competitor that features a good calendar, contact manager, email program and sufficient Outlook synchronization. Those are capabilities that Nokia is just good at.
