Design For Web Site

I know this is the print design forum, but I have always got good feedback and answers here. I have been asked to do a page order form for our website. The page will be for buttons. I will include the typical standard templates for design via Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Quark, freehand and such. I have been asked if we can incorporate a design your own button online within the program My Order Desk.
I really have no clue as how to do this and I do not claim to be a web guy, but the boss insists so...
Does anyone know if this can be coded via flash or something. I have seen other websites with design your own buttons, business cards and tshirts and such so it has to be possible. I am just not sure how to go about doing this.

Oy, I hate people/situations like this. Does he also insist that your shipping manager fix your plumbing leaks, or ask the receptionist to handle SQL Server coding?

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

Is this the best design for asynchronous notifications (such as email)? Current design uses Web Site, Azure Service Bus Queue, Table Storage and Cloud Service Worker Role.

I am asking for feedback on this design. Here is an example user story:
As a group admin on the website I want to be notified when a user in my group uploads a file to the group.
Easiest solution would be that in the code handling the upload, we just directly create an email message in there and send it. However, this seems like it isn't really the appropriate level of separation of concerns, so instead we are thinking to have a separate
worker process which does nothing but send notifications. So, the website in the upload code handles receiving the file, extracting some metadata from it (like filename) and writing this to the database. As soon as it is done handling the file upload it then
does two things: Writes the details of the notification to be sent (such as subject, filename, etc...) to a dedicated "notification" table and also creates a message in a queue which the notification sending worker process monitors. The entire sequence
is shown in the diagram below.
My questions are: Do you see any drawbacks in this design? Is there a better design? The team wants to use Azure Worker Roles, Queues and Table storage. Is it the right call to use these components or is this design unnecessarily complex? Quality attribute
requirements are that it is easy to code, easy to maintain, easy to debug at runtime, auditable (history is available of when notifications were sent, etc...), monitor-able. Any other quality attributes you think we should be designing for?

We are creating a cloud application (in Azure) in which there are at least 2 components. The first is the "source" component (for example a UI / website) in which some action happens or some condition is met that triggers a second component or "worker"
to perform some job. These jobs have details or metadata associated with them which we plan to store in Azure Table Storage. Here is the pattern we are considering:
Steps:
Condition for job met.
Source writes job details to table.
Source puts job in queue.
Asynchronously:
Worker accepts job from queue.
Worker Records DateTimeStarted in table.
Queue marks job marked as "in progress".
Worker performs job.
Worker updates table with details (including DateTimeCompleted).
Worker reports completion to queue.
Job deleted from queue.
Please comment and let me know if I have this right, or if there is some better pattern. For example sake, consider the work to be "sending a notification" such as an email whose template fields are filled from the "details" mentioned in
the pattern.

Incorrect PDF scaling for web site jpeg files

So, I'm not sure if anyone else find this frustrating. When working on a new web design either in Illustrator or Photoshop, etc. and then exporting those to a jpg file, then taking those and combining them into a PDF file using acrobat, I'm seeing the PDF files being about 25% larger than their actual 72dpi web-standard size. So when I pass along the PDF to clients for review, I always have to add a disclaimer that they should set their PDF reader to about 75% to see the actual size of the web site files. 100% is far too big. Any idea why the correctly-sized image files, when imported into Acrobat are increased in size?
I've tried saving them as smaller files... I've tried the cropping feature... none of this seems to solve the problem. It's quite frustrating.

Hi,
In Muse, there is no button/widget which allows to upload contents to your site. I would suggest to use third party web form builder, like Jotform, Upload Field Allowed File Types and Embed the form code in Muse and that should work.

I hear i-web will end next year. Does this mean I shouldn't design new web site using i-web

I have just learnt how to use i-web and I am designing web sites for 4 business. Should I think twice about this? I am concern that I will have to do it all again next year.
Mashable reported today that when i-cloud comes into play next year, i-web will no longer be supported.
Can any one enlighten me further

Unfortunately, Apple isn't a trustworthy Software Developer anymore. There is no continuity in their applications development. Innovation is one great thing - Reliability is also vital for a relationship (Apple <-> Customer) I'm sad to see that they are not as innovative and not as reliable as they used to be.
I guess these great applications like iWeb have been programmed by just one or two developers and since the went on never ending holidays with the profit of their shares - no one is able to continue the work due to chaotic organisation (like in the early days).
I'm really sad to say that, but you rather choose a web design tool from a professional software company like Adobe or one of the other nice applications like RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro....

Designing for Web - Getting Good Type Anti-Aliasing

Hi, we've been using Illustrator to mock-up our web concepts for a site we're working on. We're getting ready to start handing off the files to the programmer (and we may do some of the work ourselves). I would really like to be able to stay in 1 application for the sake of keeping things efficient and streamlined, especially when there are any changes to be made.
So I know it 'appears' you can do all of the same slicing, naming and optimizing that you can do in Photoshop, but one thing I'm not entirely clear on:
- Is there a way to produce decent, sharp type as graphics from within Illustrator, especially when small??
I know there are anti-alias settings in the Character palette in Photoshop, just didn't see anything similar in Illistrator (CS3). There are a few elements that use a custom font or formatting that need to be cut up as graphics, and I would REALLY hate to have to port everything over to Photoshop just to get decent type. It would make updating and keeping things consistent much more difficult (ie - we use paragraph styles in Illustrator to keep all type consistent).

Sometimes trying to get antialiasing right in Illustrator is downright infuriating. For example, I created a series of horizontal, rounded-corner tabs to use for navigation on a web page. The tabs were each filled with a gradient and outlined with a 1-px black stroke on the top and sides. Each tab also included some type, and there's a horizontal 1-px rule that extends across the bottom of all the tabs except the one that will be active.
Piece of cake in Illustrator and much easier to move things around and try different ideas than in Photoshop.
When I'm ready to slice it, though, I turn on Pixel Preview and find that the type looks fine, but that horizontal rule now spans two pixels vertically - an 80% black rule over a 20% black rule. It overlaps the pixel grid. If I move it up or down a little, I can get it to snap into place as a solid 1-px rule, but it is no longer snug against the bottom of the tabs. So I move the tabs up or down to get them to snap against the rule - and now the type that came with them is off, or the rule around the tabs is no longer antialiased correctly. So now I have to think about actually changing the size of the tabs - maybe add a half pixel to the height, or...
Sometimes a design works great in Illustrator, and I can manage the graphics of an entire site here. But often, this is the kind of thing that is much easier to do in Photoshop, where a pixel is always a pixel.
The solution for me is, when I reach the point of anti-alias frustration, I export the whole thing as a PSD file and continue working there. Happily, Illustrator CS4 does a much better job of this than previous versions, preserving layers, groups and even most effects.

Edit Color Sync for Exports for Web Sites

Perhaps this has been covered, but I've not found the thread. Most of the export color sync questions seem to revolve around printing or displaying on one's own monitor. Neither is an issue for me. However, I note that my RAW images exported from Aperture 2.0 as jpg's and then uploaded to web sites such as Jalbum and Orkut are washed out. Some forums have suggested this is due to those websites being optimized for sRGB. I understand that Aperture uses a proprietary color sync profile; however, my default EXIF - Expanded shows "Color Model" as simply "RGB", and "Profile Name" is Adobe RGB (1998) (my Canon 50D is set to sRGB). Again, I have seen suggestions on this forum that one can change these settings, but the process appears to be only for printers and monitors. Where/how can I change the export for uploading jpg's to the web.

I understand that Aperture uses a proprietary color sync profile
If the profile were proprietary, it would be an illegal profile under the ICC Specification.
However, I note that my RAW images exported from Aperture 2.0 as jpg's and then uploaded to web sites such as Jalbum and Orkut are washed out.
If you did not disable embedding of an ICC source colour space in Aperture, if you did not use a non-ICC enabled browser, the OS X system level services will set up a ColorWorld and convert the pixels in your JPEGs matching from the ICC source colour space to the ICC destination colour space of your display. Thus you will get what you uploaded in the first place.
I have seen suggestions on this forum that one can change these settings, but the process appears to be only for printers and monitors.
The idea is that each and every colour device is calibrated and that calibration is captured in a colourimetric colour characterisation from which an ICC colour device profile is computed. Colourants that form certain colours one one colour device at one calibration will form other colours in the same colour device at another calibration and in other colour devices at yet other calibrations. By means of device profiles, the COLOURS can be kept constant while the COLOURANTS are recomputed to compel the device to paint the closest possible match it is capable of.
Some forums have suggested this is due to those websites being optimized for sRGB.
The issue is whether people who post pictures do or do not embed ICC source colour spaces into their pictures and whether they pick browsers that are ICC-enabled or pick colour blind browsers.
To determine if there is an embedded ICC source colour space in a picture, download the picture to disk, open iApple Preview and select Tools > Get Info > Summary.
Colour Model: This defines the format or model of the colourants, e.g. three component RGB, four component CMYK.
ColorSync Profile: This defines the ICC source colour space. If there is none in the image file, the system level service assigns the Generic RGB Profile for model RGB, the Generic CMYK Profile for model CMYK and so forth. Therefore, any ICC source colour space than a Generic Profile source colour space is embedded in the image file itself.
In technical terms, the rule is that to construct a ColourWorld that does a colour space conversion through the PCS Profile Connection Space, you have to have an ICC source colour space and an ICC destination colour space (typically your display profile). It follows that the system level service ASSIGNS an ICC source colour space automatically where is none embedded. The ICC source colour space that is assigned when there is none embedded is the Generic RGB Profile for colourant model RGB, as explained.

MsBuild for web site

i have a web site which is plain js and HTML5. I have publish.xml and publishproj using which i use the below command.
msbuild.exe website.publishproj /p:DeployOnBuild=true /p:PublishProfile=WebPub.pubxml /p:VisualStudioVersion=11.0
It is working fine and creating the zip but it is creating under users\Appdata\Local\...
Can i Specify output path something like "D:\Project\A" ?

Best compression for web site

I would like to add a 2-3 minute segment of a longer movie to my web site. I use wordpress which only allows for a 2MB media clip to be uploaded. What compression in Compressor (or elsewhere) would give me such a small file? Or is there another route I can take...posting to you tube or vimeo or such?

You'd be much better off hosting somewhere else and embedding a player into your wordpress page. Or find another web hosting solution.

Looking for web sites w/ advanced text search

A group of potential customers are looking for a powerful text search engine for a web-published database, and I proposed they use Oracle 9i and Oracle Text for this purpose.
They may be interested but they demand to "see it in action".
Can you help my find web sites which use advanced features of Oracle Text to produce near-natural language search ?
My potential customers' context is : They have a few hundreds of structured documents which they want to consolidate and web-enable.
The main audience might be people who rarely use Internet, so ideally the search engine should be capable of "natural language" search.
An expert thesaurus has been constructed by the customers already.
I think Oracle Text could be a good enough option if we can take advantage of the thesaurus and the documents being structured, but I don't know of any web site that use these features of Oracle Text.

Endpoint Monitoring for Web Site down / uncontactable

Hi,
As per title I want to set up an alert for when our Azure Web site is down / page we nominate is not available
So I set up Monitoring Endpoint and Stopped the Web Site via the portal
Problem is that it redirects to
http://www.azurewebsites.net/SiteUnavailable.htm and so the Endpoint thinks everything is cool and won't fire an alert
What am I missing ?

In "real life", when your endpoint is down, it will respond with Error 500 or a timeout. Case when you manually shutdown your site to test the feature is not really relevant. Get a page to generate an error 500 to test correctly.

Need guidelines for designing for web

I'm going to be doing some outsourced design for a web developer. I'd like to build the file - a whole web page - in Photoshop and am needing a place to start.
- First, what is the best setup size for that file?
He uses Fireworks but says he doesn't think his version - 8 - can use PSDs. So he wants a PNG. Does a conversion support layers?
- What is the best tool for approaching this? Should I build it in Photoshop or is there some other program that is better for doing this? Am I at least on the right track?
- If anyone has any other advice, guidelines, suggestions that would be helpful in doing this I would appreciate that also.
My Photoshop level is probably about intermediate so if any of you pros have some wisdom to share that would be great. I've never done design for a web page other than some work on my own, which is still a work in progress as I am not a web developer - so the design itself looks nice, but the web page part is still a work in progress.

You don't need to be the one looking for some of these answers, he does. But good for you for asking. But he should know his file requirements and what programs he has and what they can do. Sounds like he struggled with web design with Fireworks and probably had little taste in graphics and so has now 'hired out' to get someone else to be responsible for his lack of knowledge.
I mean, are you designing a fluid page or do you really need to know the exact dimensions for the page and if so, shouldn't he provide those??!
You can design a page that is a good mock up and slice it up and port it over and he can take the cells where there needs to be content and/or navigation and pull out those parts of the image you created and put in what he needs to make the page work, using CSS or regular links or working within Fireworks. But if you are trying to design something so vague then I agree with Jim, this may not be pretty.
Tell him what you can do and feel comfortable with. If you are just designing the page but he is developing the page, then keep with that. You should ask what size page, the total weight he wants, over all suggestions and then you get to work and do the details for the banners or graphics and he develops those into a working PHP or ASP page. If this is a shopping cart, then I would say this won't be an HTML page. If the page will have a banner across the top, then ask what size banner would he like and is there a minimum size to make the banner fluid?
My question, why not find a good working template out there and you do the customization with the graphics and let him use current proven technology? Go look at web templates with him online. Find something and then do the graphics to customize the template as needed. There are templates for Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and other programs using PHP or ASP pages. Does he know what database he is using, or if the server is Apache or MS? Wow.
If you are designing, again... let him develop. These are two different things. Know your limits. And good luck...
