Design in Photobook

I wish to design own photobook, but not use Blurb.
How can I?

Unfortunately, we can't create custom page sizes and or page design templates for use with other vendors ... even though Kevin Tieskoetter promised he would document the process to do so almost six months ago ... It's bad enough that we will have to use another application to create custom page sizes ... as far as I am aware the only Adobe app that forces you go outside the main app to create custom page sizes ... apparently the "documentation" to do so is very difficult and/or time consuming to share with Lightroom users ... I have to wonder if there must be some sort of hidden quota for Blurb sales to be met before the elusive documentation may be shared with users ... the full blog post is here:
http://www.pixiq.com/article/kevin-tieskoetter
While I have no ill will for Blurb, they simply don't offer the book styles, sizes or options I need for my clients. I had hoped Lightroom 4 and the Book module would lighten my worflow and offer the ability to create photo books directly from my RAW images and forego the need to export thousands of unecessary derivative files to use other book layout software ... so far, by locking us into a single vendor, it is at best a half-measure and incomplete solution ... in the end the Book module is a huge disappontment for anyone who wishes to print books with any vendor other than blurb ... thus a waste of disk space for many users ...

  • Working with greyscale images in InDesign

I am designing a photobook in InDesign with several B&W images in it. InDesign in currently in PhoPhoto RGB working space. I am having the book printed by LuLu, and they require that any monochrome images in the PDF be in greyscale with a gamma between 2.2 and 2.4.
So I opened all the image files in Photoshop and converted them to "grey gamma 2.2", and then saved as JPGs and made sure to check the "embed grey gamma 2.2 profile" box.
However, when I place those images in InDesign, they look completely different! I went to "Color Settings" and then saw that InDesign doesn't have a greyscale working space. Now I understand why they look so different, but my question is - when I export the PDF from InDesign, will the images look like they did in Photoshop or will they have the "washed out" appearance they have in InDesign?
What's the best way to do this?

    >I just want to make sure I'm getting all of this. I did also notice that LuLu recommends not converting from RGB to CMYK or vice versa. Since I shoot all of my images RAW and import them into Lightroom, which is in ProPhoto RGB, then I guess that means all of my color images should be exported from Photoshop in ProPhoto RGB and my working profile in ID should also be ProPhoto RGB. Since the working space and profiles are the same in each application, the images should look the same in both. Correct?
That's right, but again if you want to see the a preview of ProPhotoRGB converted to CMYK, you'll need to set your Proof Setup to a CMYK space. In Photoshop I edit color in RGB with Proof Colors turned on and the Proof Setup set to the destination CMYK space.
    >You were suggesting converting them to CMYK in Photoshop
No! I was suggesting that you use a CMYK profile as your grayscale profile, which Photoshop allows. So, instead of Edit>Convert to Profile>Greyscale Gamma 2.2; you could set your Gray Working space to US Sheetfed via Color Settings>More Options>Gray>Load..., and then simply convert the RGB image to Grayscale via Mode>Grayscale. In this case your grayscale is profiled as if it were on the black plate of a CMYK file, so if you also use US Sheetfed in ID you'll get a similar preview.
Using a CMYK profile for grayscale in PS is a nice trick, but it isn't going to make or break the jobthere will always be variation depending on how much ink density the press operator is running. If this is the first job you are sending Lulu I would follow their instructions and use 2.2 as the grayscale space, then if there's an issue you can honestly say you followed their instructions.

  • Converting photos to sRGB for photo book

    Hi everyone!
I'm very excited about my new photo books, and anxious to send them off, but I'm glad that I checked the discussions first. I noticed a few posts recommending users save their photos using sRGB as opposed to adobeRGB to prevent dark printing and other quality issues. I use Lightroom to catalog and edit all of my photos, and when I exported my selects and added them to the iPhoto library, I exported them as adobeRGB. Is there a way to change the photos to sRGB in iPhoto WITHOUT re-exporting from Lightroom? I'm concerned that if I change to sRGB in Lightroom and re-import to iPhoto that I will loose my many hours of hard work designing the photobooks. Will the books really turn out awful with adobe RGB?

I used Preview to change my photos to sRGB, and now they look pretty awful. Very desaturated and just, well, blah. Is this normal for sRGB? Should I now correct them using iPhoto? I even tried changing my monitor to the sRGB profile (I use a Spyder monitor calibrator) but that looked even worse. Perhaps I'm over-thinking this?

  • Page-flip book on iWeb?

I am designing my own website using iWeb and I have been having problems finding a page-flip book that is iWeb compatible. If anyone knows of a page-flip program that I can use with iWeb, would you please let me know? This issue has been brought up on these forums before and I wonder what kind of success people have had. Also, if you would include a link where a page-flip book is currently being used on an iWeb designed website, that would be great. So far I haven't seen any. Thanks.

^^^ Thank you, Old Toad, for referring me to DecoImaging. Because of your help, I was able to use this program to make my own page-flip book and, with some effort, load it onto my iWeb page. Designing the book was the fairly easy part. The difficult part was that the html code that is generated in the program does not take to iWeb. A few changes needed to be made, namely the html code was changed to reflect the Flash files by adding "swf" to the code in iWeb. I could not figure this out myself and it took an html programmer to look at the code and make the changes. A note about DecoImaging too. It is a great program and it is the simplest, cleanest, and most realistic page-flip book I've seen. When you turn the pages, they don't turn too fast (like on many other books) and you can control how much curve too add in the middle of the book. No html knowlege is needed to make the book. Unfortunately, like most of these programs, there is no phone support. I must have sent dozens of emails to the only tech support person in the company. There is only one person to handle all email messages. If anyone decides to use DecoImaging to create your own flip-book, the onus is on you to be patient with the support you get from DecoImaging. In end, I got my page-flip book up on iWeb. This is what I was dreaming of all along. Here it is:

  • How can I add new photos to a saved photobook?

I've started a photobook and saved it. All the pictures that were in the filmstrip but not placed in pages in the book are gone from the project. How can I add them back?

Graham, switch to Grid view and drag the new photos to the book collection, which you'll find in the Collections panel.  Then flip back to the Book module and you'll find the photos sat there in the Filmstrip waiting to be added to the book design.

  • Photobook: Way too dark sRGB/Adobe RGB

I've just received my third photobook. We make one each year and the previous ones have been great. I already found out that it's advised to use only sRGB images. Since there are no warnings when importing with another profile or any profile-conversions, my 100+ euro book has some very dark pictures.
I'm not satisfied by the result. I'm no noob to colour (as a graphic designer) but is it so hard to check for a profile and convert it? It looks good on screen but the print looks bad.
    Anyone had this issue before?

    Contact Apple - http://www.apple.com/benl/support/photoservices/returns/
As to has anyone else seen this issue - yes - pretty much anyone who uses Adobe RGB has the issue of dark prints - if you want to avoid that then you have to avoid using Adobe RGB - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AdobeRGB_colorspace - It is different than the sRGB color space - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRGBcolorspace - and is not compatible with the Apple printing service
The sRGB color space is well specified and is designed to match typical home and office viewing conditions, rather than the darker environment typically used for commercial color matching.
Ergo - use the Adobe RGB that is designed for commercial color matching and things will be darker
expect it - it is what it is - and don't use it if that is not what you want. It is not an error or wrong - but it is different and if you choose to use it then you will get the predictable results.

  • Where is the Unlock button in HP Photo Creations to move a Photobook page?

I am trying to create a Photobook. I fail to find the Unlock button in the Storyboard to change the position of a page in my book. Please help if you can.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi Una.
Thanks. I understand what's happening now. It's not possible to move the pages of a print-at-home book, because the program is designed to allow you to print each page individually. If you're adventurous, though, here's a trick you can use to preview the pages side by side: Set your region to United States, which will enable the ship-to-home projects.
Note that changing the region requires you to restart the program, so if you've started a project, be sure to save it first. Next, click the Globe button and select United States from the region list.
    Next steps:
If you had started a photo book pages project, click the Open button to open it.
    Click the Full Catalog button.
Click the Ship-To-Home tab and select one of the ship-to-home books with the same shape (for example, landscape).
Click the Apply Design button to copy your design to the ship-to-home book.
    Edit as desired.
    Click the Catalog button.
Copy your design back to a print-at-home "photo book pages" project.
    Print.
Remember to set your region back to Ireland when you're done.
    Hope this helps!

  • Lightroom 4.3 Problems with Photobooks

I am creating a photobook using Lightroom (Version 4.3). I am using individual backgrounds which I have designed in Adobe Illustrator. I have exported the files from Illustrator as jpg. I have the following questions:
    1) There are two presets for backgrounds in Lightroom (Travel and Wedding). Can I add my own backgrounds to a separate preset?
    2) From time to time I have a problem exporting the photobook as a pdf or transfer it to blurb. When I remove my individualized backgrounds there is no problem with the export function. Has this issue something to do with my backgrounds. Should I use a different format (other than jpg) for the background?

    1) The templates are added not very simply added. If you are on Windows, navigate to the Lightroom application folder and look for the Layout Templates folder within the Templates folder. There you will see a folder for each size of book, within which will be the different layout themes, within which you will see all of the files required to add a layout theme. Plus, you'd need to modify some of the files in the parent folders. Not exactly easily done. And it's trickier on the Mac side. There are likely some who have gone through all of this work and created their own layouts, which you could probably download (free or purchase is up to them, of course).
    2) All of the built in layouts use JPEGs, so that shouldn't be the issue. It may be a question of their size or compression settings. Look at the existing files and make a comparison.

  • Beautiful "coffee-table" style photobook just released in iBookstore

    Hey iBooks fans,
Please pardon the self-promotion. I'm a photographer who has just self-published a very unique photobook to the iBookstore and wanted to let you know about it. You can find it at http://itunes.apple.com/book/id432034564 or just search for San Francisco - A Photobook in the iBooks app. Here's a screenshot (please continue reading below for some background):
Ever since I started using an iPad, I've been looking for new and interesting ways to showcase my portfolio (e.g. to art buyers at shows, gallery directors, friends, strangers on planes etc.) I've tried every "portfolio" app out there but there was always something lacking (amount of control, UI elegance, ease of use etc). So I decided to see if iBooks might be useful where so many apps have failed.
I discovered that Apple has added certain proprietary extensions to the ePUB format, which allow, among other things - "full spread" layouts. This is where a single photo can be placed across 2 pages - just like those coffee table photobooks. This meant I could create an iBook full of beautiful landscape photos that use the iPad's full width (as opposed to just one page). This was exactly the kind of portfolio I had envisioned, and I'm now able to hand this iBook over to people to flip through at their own pace. As a photographer, I no longer have to worry about people accidently looking at the wrong photos, emailing my photos from within an app, accidently deleting photos etc. Everyone I've shown this book to has been amazed by the beautiful animations, reflections and book-like physics that iBooks uses. If you've never tried the page-turn effect with high-res photos (instead of text), this is the book you should check out.
Take a look and let me know what you think. Since this was an experiment in self-publishing, I've priced it very low (more like an app than a book). And as far as I can tell, this is the first "full spread" photobook available on the iBookstore. Please feel free to ask me any questions about creating or self-publishing an iBook. Thanks!
    -Mel

This is a great post but I think it is in the wrong place. It would be a mess if many content producers started posting in the discussion boards designed for asking support questions. Please work towards getting your post moved to the Hints section as it is a great example of what a hint should be. I'm planning to post an Beginning iPad Users specific hint in that section but I am pretty slow about doing things. Maybe one of the more experienced iPad posters can assist. I think your item is good example of what this type of device can do.

  • Jpeg or what for photobook?

    Hello,
Now that i got my issue solved with the full width page for photobook. I was planning on creating a design with the pictures i have with caption and so forth. What file do you recommend my saving as when i finsished creating it in photoshop?
    Thanks,
    19kash88

    Homeboy:
If you normally use PSD that would be OK. If you have a layered PSD file and then later want to make sure tweeks to one layer you can without having to recreate all of it. Be sure you have PS set up to manage color and embed the sRGB color profile in the file. Same goes for jpgs if you prefer using jpgs.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar

  • I've been asked to pay custom charges for photobooks (UK)

I recently ordered some books and I had to pay an extra £15 for custom duties, which related to VAT and then a royal mail handling fee. I spoke to a person at HM customs and he said they were applying these charges to many such deliveries as they were not sure if they originated in the US and were simply being routed through Europe (the post mark clearly states holland).
He said that if I could provide evidence that they originated within the EU then they would refund the charge. This must be costing people thousands in total.
Worse still, I work as a professional photographer and sometimes i get these delivered direct to the client, but they won't be very happy to pay a further amount.
Does anyone know if these books are made within the EU?
    Thanks in advance

I had exactly the same issue - two urgent book just before xmas were delayed by over week - and we had to pay duty.
Two calls to apple later we were credited with the amount we had to pay plus a little more....
What I am at a loss to understand is why is there VAT on a photobook anyway - as books have no VAT?
I even went to the customs & excise website to check - any book designed to be written in, such as a diary or calendar has vat - and an album has VAT as it is designed to have things stuck into it. However, a photobook has nothing to be written into it - or to be stuck into - so why has it VAT??

  • Can not see two fields in Crystal 2008 Developer explorer/designer view

I am currently developing crystal 2008 reports against the salesforce.com database using version 12.0.0.683 CR Developer Full version. I am using an updated driver that was provided in July or Aug 08 in order to view self referencing fields. The problem is that when I try and report against one of the tables (lead history) I cannot view two of the fields (New Value and Old Value)? I can see these two field (New Value and Old Value) in the database expert as the last two fields in the actual table, but the two fields are missing when I go into the explorer/designer view. In Salesforce, these two fields can not be filtered on, but I can export all the values in this table using Salesforece Apex data loader.

    Good luck everyone.

    Hello everyone,
Here is my submission for the contest with 7 wallpapers (I know it's a lot... but I was inspired so... ^^ )
For the 2 first ones, I wanted some classic good looking wallpapers with the MSI Dragon being the center of it, with some high quality effects. So here they are, a bright version and a dark one.
    Hope you guys like it.
For the 5 next ones, I tried something really different. More in an advertising campaign way. Some minimalist looking wallpapers, trying to focus on simple things, no shadow effect. Art on it's purest form, simple but well thought.
I asked myself why people would chose MSI instead of another brand, so I figured the people who already know that. So I first started with the "Gamers know why" because it's obvious, then went to an iconic e-sport legend ("Legends Know Why") Mr. Patrik 'cArn' Sättermon, I think he and the Fnatic team clearly represent why people should chose MSI. So I used the Fnatic team for the third one "Winners know why", they are clearly one of the best multigaming team of the world and are sponsored by MSI for quite a few years now. (The picture is from the IEM 5 For the 4th one, I noticed that I start to see more and more MSI laptops around me, at college etc, so I thought that "The World knows why". And for the last one I tried to represent the spirit around the MSI Dragon and the whole Gaming part of MSI, that feeling of POWER. So I tried to make that last one a combination of the 2 styles. Representing the Power coming out of the Dragon... in a minimalist way. So here's "Unleash the Dragon". I hope I succeed. And I really hope you like my work. It took me several hours to complete that "campaign" and I'm really proud of it. I used the "#" system in it because as I made it as an advertising campaign, I thought it would be nice if everyone could share that spirit easily.
The picture of cArn and the one of the Fnatic team are from the internet, the rest comes from my personal pictures (textures and such) and of course everything is homemade.
    Cheers.
