"Design" view as a separate panel for dual-display

I just started using CS6 and was really hoping to see a new workflow enhancement for dual-display production with the "Design" view. I code all of my markup by hand in the code view. I would love to see the "Design" view in a separate panel that I could drag over to my second display by itself. Sort of like designers using "Code Inspector" as a panel on their second display. But for me, to maximize efficiency, I need the code to be closest to all of the menu bars and panels. I just want to make a code edit, click the DW "refresh" button, and glance at the layout in a "Design" without having to do additional clicking or moving pointer from display to display, ya know? Using browsers I have to save the file(s), upload the file(s), wait for the transfer to complete, move my pointer to the second display, click the refresh button, THEN look at the layout. Ugh. Been doing this for years, and really am tired of it. I have looked through the commands and online material hoping to find an update. Is this still a pipe dream?
Thanks for any info,
- DK

Apart from using the Code Inspector, I don't believe this is possible. It sounds like a sensible suggestion, though. You can file a feature request through the form at http://adobe.ly/DWBug.

  • Design view in DreamWeaver CS3 disabled for CSS & Java

    I currently use Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, and only some files have the option to view them in code AND in design view. This works for most files (HTML, PHP, etc). However, anytime I create a new CSS or Java file, the design view is disabled:
    I have already tried the two other solutions I've found in this forum.
    First I tried Preferences > File Types / Editors, and I deleted all of the file types in the "Open in Code View" menu (pictured below).
    I restarted DW, and it didn't work.
    Then I tried several steps to re-create the Configuration folder (which it did, but the problem remained) listed here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/401/kb401118.html.
    Still nothing. HTML, PHP, ASP and all other files have the Design View and Split View available, but CSS and Java do not. I would really like to use DW to start editing CSS, but do not know it well enough to write in code and therefore could really use that handy Design View so I can learn as I tweak it.
    Any help much appreciated - thanks!

    HTML, PHP, ASP and all other files have the Design View and Split View available, but CSS and Java do not.
    That's correct. That's as it should be.
    A CSS file contains a bunch of text only CSS rules. Javascript is text-only script. There's no layout to see for CSS and JS files in Design and Split View so they're disabled.
    Files with layout e.g. .htm, .php have Design View because they're web pages with a layout which can be viewed.
    I would really like to use DW to start editing CSS, but do not know it well enough to write in code and therefore could really use that handy Design View so I can learn as I tweak it.
    Open any .htm or .php (or other) web page and its associated CSS file.
    Then tweak the CSS either via Code View in the CSS file, or using the DW CSS Editor when viewing the .htm/.php file, and see the formatting changes applied in Design View in the .htm (or .php) file.
    Do not rely on DW's Design View as an absolute reference for pixel perfect accuracy. It will always be an approximation only to assist visually oriented web designers while editing.
    Always test all CSS rules and edits in a range of browsers. Browser support for CSS rules and effects varies. Not all browsers support everything on offer in CSS1, CSS2 and CSS3.

  • Design view not editable or viewable for validated site

    I can see the site fine at http://www.wwu.edu/atustest - it validates and is viewable in the browser and in "Live" or "code" view in Dreamweaver. However when I try to display it in "Design" view nothing shows except the header, and that is garbled. None of the content is viewable or editable. Help! I cannot deliver this to my non-coding users.

    If my code challenged clients want to maintain their own site, I give them a CMS.     DW is for experienced web developers.  It's  not for amateurs.

  • Colour management warning for dual display users

    For those of you who require a colour managed workflow and have more than one display, be very careful in Mountain Lion. It appears to have a bizarre bug where images loaded and shown on the primary display (e.g. in Preview) are initially rendered with the colour profile from the secondary display, or something along those lines. Dragging the display window to the secondary display and back again sorts things out. I've filed a bug report.
    If your two (or more) monitors have the same colour profile, you won't have a problem. The only workaround I can see is to set your least important display(s) to all have the same profile as your (probably calibrated, if these things matter to you) primary display, at least until (if?) the bug gets fixed.
    If you want to see it for yourself, set your two displays to differing profiles - e.g. NTSC (1953) on the primary and Wide Gamut RGB on the secondary. Then load an image into Preview - something with lots of shades of red "works" well for the colour profiles mentioned. Take a screenshot of the Preview window as a reference. Move the window to the secondary display; note the colour shift as it gets re-rendered. Now drag it back to the primary display. It'll look quite different compared to the screenshot you took earlier, despite the fact it's the same image being shown by the same application on the same display in the same window... All you did was drag the window between two monitors and back again.
    It doesn't seem to matter if the image in question has a colour profile embedded in it or not. When comparing with your screenshot, feel free to drag the screenshot between the monitors too - after all, it'll be suffering the same rendering bug! You'll still see a different result; in fact it may even be magnified by the accumulated rendering errors.
    Preview isn't the only application affected; I've seen identical issues under harder to replicate circumstances in Safari, for example.
    Given this fault and others I've seen with colour rendering in Lion, plus several new bugs found in Mountain Lion, I'm afraid that if a colour managed workflow is important to you - well - Snow Leopard or Windows...?! Ugh, what a mess

    I've encountered many of the same woes with color management being a graphic designer, but here's my issue:
    Have a 15" (Early 2011) Macbook Pro.  It is turned on with me hooked up to my Dell U2410 and display open for a dual display configuration.  The Dell is my primary monitor.
    I then unplug my MBP to use it around the house.  I go to plug it back into the Dell for my dual monitor.  I notice that the color on the Dell looks good, but now the MBP has a very blue color temperature.  Like moving from the preconfigured 'Color LCD' profile to 'sRGB' which definitely shifts to a blue color on the MBP.
    I check the color profiles in System Settings and the Color profiles are correct.  'Dell U2410' for my Dell and 'Color LCD' for my MBP.  But as I said, it's much bluer than standard.  I try to change the color profiles around on the MBP and no matter which I select it's always the same color with no shifts I would expect to see.
    Only solution I have found is to restart my computer.  Upon restarting all is well again in the world.
    It's pretty annoying having to restart my computer everytime I plug it back into my workstation with Dell and keyboard.
    Related note: USB does not work when I plug things back and again have to restart to fix this.

  • Use laptop display for dual display

    I'm working on a G5 w/ artisan monitor and want some extra screen real estate. I have a G4 power book and wondered if I can somehow use the screen on the laptop as a dual display for the G5? Both run OSX tiger.

    Hi Virginia,
    Welcome to the discussions.
    As far as I am aware, the graphics cards on the powerbooks enable you to run a second display from the laptop, but only as a "mirrored" (i.e. identical picture) of the main display on the laptop. For extra screen real estate, you need fully independant operation, and that can't happen.
    Also, I don't think you can use the screen off the laptop as a "passive" display, as there is no practical way of supplying the correct video input to your laptop display from the second graphics port of the G5.
    For these two reasons, I believe that what you are considering will not be possible.
    Cheers!

  • Panel for Dual Monitors

    I'm working on switching from Gnome to Openbox, and am looking for a panel to use. For my current setup I have two gnome panels, one on each monitor, each with its own window list so they only show the windows that are open on that specific monitor. Is this kind of behavior something I can duplicate with tint/pypanel/etc?

    Hi,
    You've been doing a lot of research and finding answers. Looks like I'm late to the party.
    A dual DVI card is difficult to find for your uses, the ATI 9600 PC/Mac Edition does have those features.
    But I must warn you that these 9600's have had difficulty in some G4's. In some Mac's like yours they work fine, in other's - a blank screen. It's worth a shot, just as long as you can return it.
    This ATI Support Document tells the story:
    https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894
    Then type 737-21888 into the 'search' window, hit Enter.
    Edit: If for some reason that link won't work, I'll insert what it says:
    737-21888: Radeon 9600 PRO PC & MAC Edition list of supported system configurations
    The information in this article applies to the following configurations:
    Radeon® 9600 PRO PC & MAC Edition
    "Quicksilver" Power Mac G4 model
    "Quicksilver 2002" Power Mac G4 model
    "Digital Audio" Power Mac G4 model
    The Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition is not compatible with the "Quicksilver", "Quicksilver 2002" or the "Digital Audio" PowerMac G4. If a Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition board is installed in one of these systems the result is a blank display.
    For assistance in differentiating Power Mac G4 models, please refer to Apple Article 58418.
    Let me know what happens.

    Dave

  • Thunderbolt dock for dual display

    Hi All,
    Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced (say < $100) Thunderbolt dock? I want the MagSafe 2 + Thunderbolt 2 cable simplicity... i.e. set the laptop on the desk and click the two cords into my MacBook Pro.
    I need to connect two HP displays (each display has 1x DVI and 1x DisplayPort) and my Mac keyboard and Logitech MX mouse.
    Thanks!

    the resolution on both of the tvs are 1920 x 1080, and the macs resolution is 13.3-inch (1280 x 800), is that what you are referring to?
    tv specs:
    1920 x 1080, Samsung UE22D5010 22-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p
    Ultra Slim LED TV
    2 hdmi ports
    Ultra Clear Panel
    50Hz LED TV
    so will it work for me or my mac cannot power them all? therefore one screen will be black?

  • Linking iMac with iBook for dual display???? Possible?

    If anyone could help it would be extremely appreciated.
    Can i link my iBook with my new iMac to have dual screens?
    There is a mini DVI on the iMac and the iBook so am i right to presume that i could link the two together and have dual screen support? I have been trying to find a mini DVI - mini DVI cable online but to no avail so im not sure what to do...

    How disappointing, it would likely be so easy for the apple people to put an input in.
    Once I get my new computer my old laptop's fairly nice screen will never be used again...

  • Powermac 1.25 MDD one or two graphics cards for dual display?

    I currently have two displays running off of one ATI card. Would I be better off putting a second card in a free PCI slot to run display number two. I've noticed that the ATI card divides the 128 MB memory between the two displays. With a second card there would be more memory dedicated to each individual display.
    Is this worth it or not? I have the extra card which i believe is an ATA 9200 PCI card.

  • Design view for jsp custom tags.

    when we drag-and-drop custom tag control in the source of jsp page, when we switch to the design view of jsp we should be able to view controls as desired.
    Observation: 1) Eclipse 3.2 doesn't have design view for jsp pages.
    2) which software uses the design view. we need to extend eclipse core framework and we do not find any technical approach document to proceed further on this.
    3) RAD 6.0 we can see a JSP in design view.
    I'm searching for any technical approach document to create plugin that can intercept the custom tags and provide a design view.
    Will any one suggest the plugin for that.

  • Can't see design view after changing connections file from localhost to a remote host & back again

    I was using localhost to test files before changing the connections document over to a remote host, since I couldn't get dreamweaver to connect to the remote host, I changed back to localhot. My files are all .php files. This is a dynamic site. After I changed my connection back to my local host my design view no longer works. It's competly grey with 3 small icons at the top on the left. I can view in live view and I can view in the browser. But no longer in design view after being able to for 6 months. The 3 icons are a hard drive case, a document, and a link symbol . When I click in code view the design view turns grey when I click in design view it turns white. I am using wamp for the localhost, Windows XP home, Dreamweaver CS5. Can someone please tell me how to go back to design view. This happens with any & all files including non dynamic .html files. Also having a problem connecting to my remote host. using godaddy, and they have tried with me for 2 hours to connect, I just keep getting password is incorrect. Thank you for any help, Stacey

    I would also recommend clearing the Site cache, which may help with the connection failure. To do so, choose Site > Advanced > Recreate Site Cache.
    After doing so, be sure to go back into your Site Setup, and make sure the FTP address, user name, and password are all correct. (Click the Test button in there to verify.)
    If that doesn't help with getting connected to your server, you might try an alternate FTP client (e.g. FileZilla) to just make sure you are entering the right connection information. It could be that GoDaddy is having some issue, or maybe you just mistyped something (I know I do this often when I type too fast).
    As for the issue with Design View, try clearing the Dreamweaver cache. Instructions are here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/494811
    You might also try toggling the location of Design View. That is, when in Split View, choose View > Design View On Left. Then, choose that menu option again to reset the location back to the right.
    Resetting the workspace might also be recommended. Window > Worksapce Layout > Reset 'name of current workspace'

  • How to hide content in design view within Dreamweaver?

    How can I hide content in design view within Dreamweaver?
    I have a tabbed content menu that uses some javascript. Everything looks great in Live view, but when I go to design view, all the content goes way beyond the div. How can I make it to where I can hide the content in that div in design view or wrap it completely inside of there? It's really hard to explain which is why I provided some pictures!

    DESIGN VIEW
    Thank you in advance for all the help!

    Humm....... you want to hide it in Design View whilst working on the rest of the site?
    If that is the case set the menu container <div> to display: none; -
    <div id="menu" style="display: none;">This is the content menu</div>
    Then either set it to display: block; when you're ready to view it live or remove the style completely.

  • DW design view not displaying CSS correctly

    Hello,
    I am having a problem using the position:relative CSS. I've
    created a simple page that has 3 div tags. Below is the code:
    <body>
    <div id="headerleft"><img src="/images/header.gif"
    width="303" height="120" /></div>
    <div id="headerright">Right Side</div>
    <div id="toplinks">
    <a href="www.google.com">Link 1</a> |
    <a href="www.google.com">Link 2</a> |
    <a href="www.google.com">Link 3</a> |
    </div>
    </body>
    Below is my CSS code:
    #headerleft {
    position: relative;
    z-index:2;
    margin-bottom:-40px;
    float:left;
    #headerright {
    float:right;
    #toplinks {
    position: relative;
    z-index:3;
    text-align:center;
    clear:both;
    What this page does is shows a image in the top left corner.
    In the top right the phrase "Right Side". Then my third div
    'toplinks' displays a bunch of links. Since my headerleft id has
    margin-bottom:-40px, I need to use z-index and position:relative so
    that my links are shown above the headerleft id.
    I publish the page and view it in IE and everything works
    fine. However, in Design View in DW my toplinks div is displayed
    right under the rightheader id. For some reason it's not being
    displayed under the left and right floats(headerleft and
    headerright id's). Not sure why because I have 'clear:both' set for
    that div's CSS.
    I take the position:relative out of the toplinks id, and
    everything looks fine in DW. My toplinks id then drops under the
    both headerleft and headerright. However, when I view this is IE
    then the links on the left are no longer active. I guess because
    z-index needs position:relative to work?
    Anybody have any suggestions?
    Thanks

    I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish, but try this
    much simpler
    and less convoluted code -
    <style type="text/css">
    <!--
    #headerright {
    float:right;
    #toplinks {
    text-align:center;
    width: 300px;
    float: right;
    -->
    </style>
    </head>
    <body>
    <div id="headerleft">
    <div id="toplinks"> <a
    href="www.google.com">Link 1</a> | <a
    href="www.google.com">Link
    2</a> | <a href="www.google.com">Link
    3</a> | </div>
    <div id="headerright">Right Side</div>
    <img src="/images/header.gif" width="303" height="120"
    /> </div>
    </body>
