Designing a website using iMac

Hi there,
Any recommended software (freeware) for use to design a website for photography business?

Very few people or businesses design and code their own websites from scratch anymore.  It is just to labor intensive and requires a breath of knowledge that is hard for one person or even a small group to have, especially if they have an actual business to run.
You have a few choices one is to use a site that is already setup for the business you have. As you are asking about photography you;re in luck there are a lot of sites doing this sort of thing.
The other choice is to setup your own site using a content management system (CMS) which does all the heavy lifting. All you need to do is modify it for the look you want and for the business you intend to carry out.
For the former Zenfolio - Professional photo and video hosting for photographers ... gets good marks from some professionals I know who use it but there are a lot of others out there.
For the later Drupal - Open Source CMS | Drupal.org is one of the most widely used CMS systems by a wide array of end users (you'll be surprised to see just what sites use Drupal ). It has a large active development community and a wide range of modules that can be plugged in to do a wide range of tasks.
The way you go really depends on what you are looking to do and how much effort you want to put into the web side as opposed to the business side.

  • Photoshop to design a website

I am new to using the adobe products. Up to this point I have been using wordpress to design and build websites for friends. I am starting to get more friends asking me to build sites for them.
Does Adobe have any free tutorials that I can review that can show me how to layout and design a website using photoshop?
The last website I did was www.thetop40.com and I want to create something like this again.

    Hope these help:

Hi! I'm a Windows XP convert... switched to an imac about 4 months ago and am LOVIN' it As a graphics designer I did use a feature on my Windows machine which I really miss on my mac... beaing able to see a preview of one of the images in a folder on top of the folder icon. In other words, in Windows, you can see the first image that is inside the folder as an icon on the folder itself. Is there a way to do this on the mac? Maybe some software program that will do it? Thanks for you help!

It would be brilliant if Apple could make picture folders behave like events in iPhoto. You could see a photo on the folder, and also mouse over it to change pictures.
But no, there's not an application I'm aware of that does this. You can manually make a picture the folder icon, but it's a tedious process.
Unfortunately this is another example of how dated and worn out the Mac's interface is. The concept of using a file folder as the icon for a directory of images is so 80's. You could use coverflow, but that only helps once you're in the directory itself. Or use iPhoto or Aperture, although they just do photos. Or try Lyn as an alternative: it has a sort of iTunes-like interface, and makes it easy to organize photos without having to put them in iPhoto. And it can display photos that are already in Libraries.
But you'd probably need a Finder alternative. I use Leap, which displays any type of document. It also does tagging, which is another huge omission in the Finder. More like Windows Explorer (although still no photo on folder icons).
Another very stylish Finder alternative, especially useful for pictures, is FileBrowse. I don't know why it hasn't gotten more attention. It DOES put photo previews on the folders it shows. And allows one-click expansion to show the photo enlarged. It's super fast, and even allow you to group/sort by camera or flash! It really has to be seen to be appreciated. It works in Lion, although it doesn't seem to be have been updated lately. http://www.filebrowse.com/index.html

  • I used to manage 3 websites using both my imac and macbook, using dropbox, however I can no longer access them from my mac book.

I have been managing 3 websites using iWeb for the last several years, using both my iMac and Macbook.  However for the last two weeks, I can no longer access these sites from my macbook.  It appears "empty".  When I first started seeing this, I took it to the Genius Bar in another city and he moved some library contents to my desktop - still didin't help.
I know iWeb is a thing of the past, but I can't stop right now and learn something new for about the next 4 weeks (in a sports team in the middle of a season)
.  After that, I will have time to learn a new product.
Also, what is a suggestion for replacing iWeb?  Sandvox? Rapid Weaver?
    Thanks!

What do you mean when you say you "can no longer access these sites?" Does that mean you can't connect to those sites in your web browser, or that they aren't showing up in iWeb?
If the latter, note that your iWeb data is all entirely stored in a hidden file. In the Finder, choose Go -> Go To Folder and paste the following path into the window that opens:
    ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb
In that folder, you will find a single file, called Domain. That's got all the data for all your iWeb sites. If that file is missing, or if it has become corrupt, you will need to restore it from an earlier backup.
As for replacing iWeb, either Sandvox or RapidWeaver should work. Which works best will depend on your own tastes. Note that neither is capable of fully importing iWeb sites, as those sites will have a lot of content that is copyrighted by Apple. For more information about transitioning to one of these products, see:

  • I'm designing my first website using Fluid Grid Layouts. CSS question

I'm designing my first website using CS6 and Fluid Grid Layouts so I need a lot of help. I realize CS6 creates something called a boilerplate css file. However, in addition to that file, do I have to create an individual external style sheet for my desktop, ipad, and smart phone pages (3 separate style sheets) or should I have only one external style sheet for everything?
Or this is there another recommended way to use Fluid Grid Layouts?

FluidGrid Layouts creates a boilerplate.css file, a respond.js file & a Fluid.css file for you -- you name it whatever you like.  I like to call mine Fluid.css so I remember what it is.
Fluid.css contains mobile first -- upon which all others are based.  Inside, CSS Media queries, you'll find code for tablet and later on desktop.  So one stylesheet generated by DW covers all 3.
    TIPS:
FluidGrids are very temperamental.  Do not tamper with boilerplate.css or Fluid.css files.  Instead create a separate external style sheet for your typography & other custom content styles.
Build mobile first, then tablet and finally desktop.
Keep your designs simple and uncluttered.
Don't worry about content until you get the layout perfected.
Have fun with it .  You'll probably have to start over a few times before you get what you want.

Very bad practice to just use image slices into your website.
Check out this tutorial to learn how to efficiently slice, dice and markup your design into an active HTML format - http://net.tutsplus.com/articles/news/slice-and-dice-that-psd/
Also, Spry - has been deprecated and is no longer officially supported by Adobe. http://blogs.adobe.com/dreamweaver/2012/08/update-on-adobe-spry-framework-availability.htm l

  • Buying Used iMac - What to look for?

    Hello,
I'm a devoted mac user. I currently own a late 2008 unibody Macbook, and have been looking for an upgrade. I came across a used iMac posting on a craigslist-like website. The configuration is a low-end mid-2011 21" iMac (quad core i5, 4gb, 500gb).
I asked the seller for the serial number and checked it out the support site. The warranty is due to run out on Thursday, just enough time for me to buy extended AppleCare. The price seems reasonable (approx $730 whereas a new iMac is $1200), and I've asked to see the iMac in person tomorrow. I wanted to know what to look for when making the final decision.
Also do you think I should hold out for an Ivy Bridge iMac (rumoured to be coming soon??) or will it not make a difference for normal coding/browsing (no photo/video editing/gaming)? One factor discouraging me is that Apple has hitched up the prices for the newly released Macbooks here in India (the base 13" pro used to be $1250, now $1530!!!).
    Thanks a lot!

Oh! Had no idea about this... how does one release the account? I mean, is there a way i can check it on the machine itself? The applecare site doesn't show any registration info.
    Thanks!!

  • Want to add online store into my pre-designed PHP website template

    Hi guys,
I have designed my website in PHP and need to add an online store to my site.
In the past I've used the WebAssist PayPal extension but ideally I am after something a bit more versatile and something that displays the user's shopping basket within my website template, instead of opening a new window with the cart contents.
Does anyone know of any shopping carts out there that I can insert into my template? Or, is there a way to manipulate the WebAssist buttons to have the shopping cart display within my website template - without using iFrames or unsatisfactory fixes like that?
Thank you and I hope to hear from you.

    Hi John,
Thanks for the reply! Ideally free but if not, I wouldn't really want to spend any more than $100 on it really.

  • Is it possible to design a website completely in Fireworks?

Just wondering if this is possible I used to be a engineering designer (& learned dozens of progams while in the field) & I'm trying to help my buddy with his new business building a website. I have no desire or need to learn code. Fireworks seems easy & I was wondering if it was possible to design a complete website in it?
I'm almost done with his site I exported it as html & images in Fw's CS5 the only problem I'm having is the layout is fixed. I clicked on the center button under the export options but it doesn't do anything?
I would also like the parts (header, nav buttons, images, & text boxes) to change as a proportion of the browser/screen size (I believe this is called flexible) but remain overall centered on all the pages.
Thanks for helping out the newbie, please let me know how I can return the favor it would be my pleasure.

I have always admired the appearance of websites created by graphic artists as opposed to non-artistic "code heads".  It is of course important that the site does not contain code errors or an oddball configuration that will cause it to fall apart when viewed in browsers like, Wheezer Von Hacktule's Web Shredder etc.  I'm a video editor, and can't be bothered with the quantum properties of a pixel and edit from the pixel on up as some of the code heads do.  And their sites look like it.  Look at some of the sites regulars in the Dreamweaver forum have put together... sorry to be a critic.
Trust me, unless you are designing Websites for a bank or some top secret government project, the visual design method IS the most quick and straight forward. Yes CSS.
Without going into a lot of detail:
You start your design with PhotoShop, carefully name your layers (lowercase and use underscores) and put them in order.  Make sure to include "white space" between your graphic elements.  When you are happy with the appearance, open the PSD with Fireworks.  Using the shape tool in Fireworks, create your divs. Give them names like top_head and side_buttons etc. and keep the shape "divs" on the lower layers in Fireworks just above your background.  Run the shapes to the outside edge of your design BUT allow space of about 5 pixels between the divs, keeping them separate. Use the slice tool to tell Fireworks what your exported images are going to be.  Be sure to name them in the Fireworks layer pallette.  Be careful that nothing overlaps the div shape container and that no slice overlaps on to another.  You can better see this by zooming way in on your design.  BTW Fireworks optimizes images for the Web, much better than PhotoShop.  Optimize each image according to its type, photographic, use jpeg, clip art-like images use gif.
Don't "slice" text areas you want to remain HTML text as opposed to an image of text.  Fireworks will automatically create that area as text upon export.
Export from Fireworks as CSS and images.
Open your html page in Dreamweaver.  Some things will be out of alignment.  That is where knowledge of CSS comes in.  Do your refinements in Dreamweaver.  You may need to go back to Fireworks and make some changes, then re-export.
OK, so I created a rather complex design and I saved it as a template.  I uploaded the design to our server and checked it in Adobe Browserlab as well as the W3C Markup Validation page.  No alignment errors across many browsers and zero code errors at the W3C Markup Validation page.

10.5.8 is the minimum. You'll need to upgrade the operating system.
I strongly recommend a clean install.
