Designing dynamic forms

Hello, I've been given a 20 page form in pdf that needs dynamic fields added. The auto detect in Acrobat is useless and I opted to open each page in Illustrator then copy the fields to Indesign and export, but the Acrobat auto detect is still useless and inconsistent, exporting some items and not others and exporting some squares as text, some as check boxes and some as radial even though they all have the exact same formatting and size (tried making them circles). Is there a way to tag the objects so they export as they should or some software with a bit more logic than Acrobat?
At this stage there is no way that I can find to rectify the issues without manually placing the majority of fields which will take days. There must be a solid way to design dynamic forms and wondering if any gurus out there have any tips. I am operating CS3 (will have CS5 in a few days if the client can wait).
Thanks very much for any help.
Cheers, Leah

InDesignSecrets has some information on creating forms by using a hidden layer in InDesign to include elements that will help Acrobat auto-detect the form fields.

  • Help required in Development of Dynamic forms

    Hi all,
    I want to design dynamic form (using forms 6i), in which the end user will display the screen according to his own requirement i.e on the run-time screen user want to display particular field or not.
    In this we have to re-arrange the position of the fields at the run time.Suppose, if the one field is not displayed then immediate next displayed field should take the position of the first non-displayed field.
    Can anybody share their ideas ??
    Regards.

    I offer an apology for popping up a number of old threads. I have been editing all the links to the old AOL site that I can find, and when I change them, the forum software pops the thread back to the top.

  • Install a customer font - dynamic form design

    Hi all,
    we set the parameter  gs_docparams-dynamic mit abap_true for generating the form, beause we locate some form objects dynamically. Now we need to embed our customer font other licenses (for the dynamic form design).
    So, we installed the font (for dynamic design) on the ADS, but it is still the same problem, that the font is not embedded in the PDF.
    Should the font be installed on the ADS and the client?
    Do somebody have install instructions? ...or other ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Marc

    Hi,
    What ever font you installed in ADS, Same font you need to install in your Desktop/Laptop where you are designing form.
    Once the fonts are installed, they are visible  in your form and you can include the fonts  in the form.
    Note: After Installing the font in ADS, you need to restart the ADS Service(Normally basis people will do this)
    Thanks.

    Cannot get dynamic form to add additional lines as needed.
    Created simple dynamic form with "Add Item Button" designed to add an item line. Item line only has one text field. Used the "instanceManager.addInstance(1);" javascript line for the button.

    There was some trouble with the initial installation of Acrobat 9 Pro Extended, requiring assistance from technical support. I don't know if I am having continuing installation/operations problems or if it is programmer error.
    I have been told by Adobe Technical Support that they "don't"/"won't" support javascript issues, so I am left on my own to determine the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

    I should also mention that I can call up the sample forms provided by the program and those samples work, but as I try to create a form from the beginning, it does not work.

  • Dynamic Forms and WF

    Hello,
    I have designed a dynamic form, where user can add rows dynamically by clicking a button on the form, the form is working fine in preview in designer.
    this form is initiating a LC WF process, but, if I deploy this form to form manager as an XDP and choose to render it to PDF, adding rows function does not work, however if I save this as dynamic PDF from LC designer and deploy it again to form manager, it works !!
    However, I can not use PDF generated from LC Designer since I found that commenting and annotations are not working ( I am using acrobat ) which is an important feature, also, web services calls are not working even, again from Acrobat!
    How can I set the form server installed with workflow server to render XDP templates into dynamic PDF forms ?
    Or alternatively how to enable commenting and fix web service calls in PDF rendered form ?
    Thank you for help,
    Greetings,

    By default Forms and Form Manager are configured to render a PDF as either static or dynamic based on some values in the XDP. By default those values will tell it to render a static PDF. What you can do, in Designer save as a dynamic PDF, then open the dynamic PDF in Designer and save as an XDP. Upload that XDP to Form Manager, the tags will be present to tell it to be rendered as a dynamic PDF. There's a better way if you are using Designer 7.1 and Forms 7.1, but since I don't know your environment this is a way that will work regardless of versions.
    Annotations will not work in dynamic PDF's though. Currently annotations make no sense in dyanmic PDF's since the template of the PDF can dynamically change while annotations are bound to a specific location. IE: You have a dynamic PDF that is initial 4 pages and add an annotation to page 4. Later the template of the PDF changes based on data and user interaction and it is now a 2 page PDF, but the annotation is still on page 4 which no longer exists...

  • Saving dynamic forms in Acrobat Reader

    How do you create PDF dynamic forms and save them so that they can be completed and saved  in Acrobat Reader.

    Thank you very much for your help. As I said this was my first attempt with Livecyle. I had sold the concept of dynamic forms to a collegue and promised to do a dynamic form one for him before going on a winter holiday. Completed the form in a hurry only to find I could not enable users with Acrobat Reader. My worry was that I would not be able to save dynamic forms without additional software, but your helpful comments confirm its something I have done that is causing my issue.
    I think Livecycle is a great product, but fragmented information is available for individual users. Bought the Book PDF Forms Using LifeCycle Designer (Acrobat 9) and joined PDFscripting web service which are both good in there own way. I get confused with Adobe's help, not being IT techie and the difference of Enterprise Editions of LifeCycle on how to get the best out of LiveCycle.
    Many thanks George for you assistance, I will retry when I return from my winter break.

  • Rich Text in a XML Dynamic Form

    Hi guys,
    I'm having a problem accessing the property "richValue" of a text field.
    What I'm trying to do is get comments entered in a text field to be added to a list of comments(rich, text Field), similar to chat window. So each comment added (via a button click) will be formatted differently depending on other form parameters.
    Using LiveCycle Designer ES to create dynamic pdf form, target version 8.1 or higher. Testing using Acrobat Professional 8.1.2 .
    All text fields have richText switch on and also the Binding data format has been set to "XHMTL", only because Designer was whinging about it.
    Have tested:
    ]var field = event.target.getField("form1[0].#subform[0].txtAddComment[0]");
    console.println("Comment: " + util.spansToXML(field.richValue));
    ]undefined "is the result".
    Also tested:
    ]var field = event.target.getField("form1[0].#subform[0].txtAddComment[0]");
    var comments = event.target.getField("form1[0].#subform[0].txtComments[0]");
    ]comments.richValue = field.richValue;
    ]"nothing happens, no error, fields don't change nothing"
    OK is rich text supported in xfa dynamic forms?
    My aim is to be able to take someone's comments, format them and add them to a list of comments (like a log of comments), via javascript.
    Can anyone assist? It will be much appreciated.

    send me your form,will try and fix it for you

  • XML data within dynamic form

    Hi,
    I'm trying to make a new XML Schema connection inside the form designer, I successfully made the connection and get the data inside my form, but I have only one problem, I have a huge number of records which I decided to make them as a dropdown list, they are about 11000 records, OK, now to the problem which is if I save the form as a static pdf form the list will be filled completely with the data came from the XSD file, and the produced file size is about 3 M, but if I save it as dynamic pdf form, the produced file size is about 400 K, but if I tried to access the dropdown list inside the file, it takes forever to load, without getting any result at the end.
    OK, my personal conclusion is that in case of the static forms the data saved inside the pdf file, but in case of the dynamic forms the data is not saved there.
    I need to save the file as dynmic pdf because I have a table that needs to add new row accoriding to the user click on a button of (add new row).
    So, can any one help me to fix this issue?

    Sorry, I found the solution:
    when I use the Adobe Reader 8.0.0 or Adobe Acrobat professional 8.0.0
    the stuff works normally, but in case of Adobe Reader 8.1.1 or Adobe Acrobat professional 8.1.1 this problem happens,
    Now I'll explain:
    1- I have a form with dropdown list.
    2- I want to populate this dropdown list from XSD file has structure similar to the following:
    =====================================================================
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?>
    <xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
    <xs:element name="shipRequest">
    <xs:complexType>
    <xs:sequence>
    <xs:element name="orders">
    <xs:complexType>
    <xs:sequence>
    <xs:element name="order" maxOccurs="unbounded">
    <xs:complexType>
    <xs:sequence>
    <xs:element name="shipVia">
    <xs:simpleType>
    <xs:restriction base="xs:string">
    <xs:enumeration value="Ground"/>
    <xs:enumeration value="2 Day Air"/>
    <xs:enumeration value="Overnight"/>
    </xs:restriction>
    </xs:simpleType>
    </xs:element>
    </xs:sequence>
    </xs:complexType>
    </xs:element>
    </xs:sequence>
    </xs:complexType>
    </xs:element>
    </xs:sequence>
    </xs:complexType>
    </xs:element>
    </xs:schema>
    ====================================================================
    but with one main difference, that the element of shipVia has about 11000 of (<xs:enumeration ) elements.
    3- when I made the normal steps of make new connection to XSD file, it walked with me normally without any errors.
    4- incase I save this form as static pdf file, then open it with adobe professional, the menu is working smoothly and load the data inside perfectly.
    5- incase I sace this form as dynamic pdf file, if I try to open the dropdown list, it takes forever to load the data.
    very starnge that this problem happen with the newer version, so any idea for this??

  • Dynamic form in Mac OS

    Hi,
    we have created an acrobat dynamic form using Livecycle Designer . We have a web application, where when the user wants to open the form, we prefill some fields in the form and display it in the browser.
    Here is how it works,
    1. The form was designed using Livecycle Designer .
    2. The user clicks on a link and the app server renders the form, with some prefilled data( we maipulate those data into the form using itext ) .
    3. The user fills some more information and / or puts a digital signature on the form .
    4. There are few buttons ( we have put in the form) , one for printing the form, One for saving the form, one for saving and emailing the form .
    5. Depending upon the action ( save  or save and email) we save the form in a drive in the server ( the user can request it back to view) or we save and email it to sepcfic email addresses.
    But when we access the same form in Mac OS 10.6.8 in safari browser, it opens up outside the application in a new winodw. So whatever action the user takes ( clicing on any button ) , we dont have any control or way to capture that.
    So my question is is there a solution for it ? There must be some one worked on it before or have some idea. Please share your thoughts and suggestion on it .
    Thanks

    Run Safari in 32bit mode and try to open your form.
    We found that few of the features are not working correctly if the Safari runs in 64bit mode.

  • Extracting data from dynamic forms

    I am new to using Livecycle and see the advantages of using dynamic forms for collecting data. I have designed several dynamic forms which include rows with 6 to 9 text fields and may be completed with 10 to 100 rows. I  have had to use text fields for collecting numeric information as many of the references start with zeros (003456).
    Whilst Acrobat Pro provides for Livecycle dynamic forms to be enabled for Acrobat Reader filling and saving is extracting to Excel the best option available if you do not have the Enerprise version of Livecycle?
    One problem I have in using Excel is that whilst the completed  PDF documents capture the leading zeros, when I view the Excel spreadsheet the lead zeros have been lost. I have experienced this problem in importing Excel files into Access. To overcome this I usually create five lead rows with characters in all the fields that I want Excel to define as text - otherwise it processes them as numerics.
    Any better ways of extracting data from a hundred or so dynamic forms?

    Hi,
    your problem is not the exported data, it's Excel that drops the leading zeros by default.
    You can use a custom pattern to keep the leading zeros.
    0#### will display intergers with up to 5 places with a leading zero.
    Value:           Displayed Value:
    012               012
    12345          12345
    0045             0045

  • Issue tabbing across page breaks in dynamic form

    Hi all,
    I have a strange problem that I'm having trouble getting to the bottom of, relating to my dynamic form.
    This form grows and shrinks depending on how the user fills it out.  I have a questionnaire section where certain questions are hidden or shown depending on previous input.
    Things get interesting when I look at the tab order.  Sometimes when tabbing forward or backward across page breaks, the focus lands on a spot that I cannot identify.  There will be no cursor and I can not type.  However if I continue to tab in the same direction, I can see that it is still going in the correct sequence.  It just looks like for some reason, in those places, focus is put in the wrong component.  But if I type different input into the prior fields (ones that affect the length of the pages) that causes the field to move to different place where it's not adjacent to a page break, and then tabbing to the field in either direction works fine.  It seems that only when it's beside a page break, it becomes problematic.
    Also, it only seems to be a problem if the field gets moved to be adjacent to a page break AFTER the form is initially rendered.  If the field was originally beside a page break by default, then it seems to work fine.
    Just to rule out a possible problem with the tab order configuration, I set my from to Automatic tabs, and even went as far as removing all the <traversal> elements from the form.
    After doing either of those things, the problem still persists.
    Has anyone seen this before?

    Hi Eric,
    I have seen funny behaviour when tabbing within Preview in LC Designer. It may be picking up a read-only item in the Master Page.
    Good luck,
    Niall

  • Tags in dynamic forms

    Has anybody create dynamic forms with tags?
    For me it is not possible to do this, only static forms can hold tags (Designer 8.o and 8.1 ES).
    So it is impossible to create accessible, dynamic PDF-Forms with Designer technology - is this the reality?
    regards
    Jan Hillmer

    Thanks Mike. I've been banging my head against the wall all day trying to figure out why my Livecycle Designer 8 forms aren't tagged. I couldn't find any info searching the Adobe site (I REALLY suck at google-like searches). Is there a known issues document that you can point us to that might have more info about current problems with tagging dynamic forms?

  • Dynamic Forms - Study Material

    Hi,
    We have to start working on dynamic forms. Currently I've started looking into the Help of Designer 7.0. But is there any good relevant study material for Creating dynamic forms.
    Thanks,

    There are a few tutorials and lessons that come with Designer Helps.
    You can go to Designer 'Help' menu and click on 'Getting Started'.
    You can also find the XML Form Object Model scripting guide from the link below. It provides detailed information about the different objects in each of those models, and their associated properties
    and methods.

    Additional resources (tips and tricks...) can be found at http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/livecycle/designer/devcenter.html
    Also, this user-to-user forum is also a very helpful source when it comes to issues or problems while you are designing your form.

  • Dynamic forms - adding line items

    Case: A form author has created a PO where the number of detail lines required on the form can be as few as 1 or as many as 20+. Instead of creating a fixed number of lines, a dynamic form is created so that user's may click on a 'Add Line' button to add additional lines to the form as needed.
    Is anyone willing provide me with an example of this that I could look at, dissect and see how this actually works, I'm a newbie to LifeCycle designer and I cannot figure out how to do this?

    See the Dynamic Purchase Order example in your LiveCycle installation folder.
