Designing for Accessibility

I am trying to create accessible pdf from an InDesign original.  I have watched the videos and tried very hard, and it seems much easier to create accessible epub than accessible pdf.  Is there an interest group on accessibility? here or elsewhere? where I can talk with like-minded folks?
We publish a newsletter four times a year, 8 pages, 2 columns, pretty for print.  In the past we have also put all these articles on the web.
New management is asking us to publish "pdf only".  That is excluding all our print-handicapped users, of which there are many.  I am scrambling to product accessible pdf, and it is not easy.
Can I put "bookmarks" into InDesign that will be carried out into PDF so that I can use them as PDF Open Parameters?  I want to direct people to a specific article within the pdf file (say on page 5).  I see how to do it, but it seems you have to enter the bookmarks in the PDF file itself, after creating it.  This makes changes very awkward as all the PDF work has to be re-done every time you recreate the file.  If I could put them into InDesign and have them available to all formats, that would be wonderful.
Ideally, I would like to have an InDesign master from which I could extract to html, or pdf, or ebook, or Kindle, and carry all the tagging, table of contents, etc. in a logical reading order to the distribution format.
I would love to talk with someone else who is already doing this!
Thank you,
Joyce

You can use either generate Bookmarks in InDesign using the Bookmarks panel (Window > Interactive > Bookmarks).
Or, better, you can use the Layout > Table of Contents feature, and check Include in PDF (or some such) when you export the PDF. You'll have to read about creating a table of contents in Help or watch a video.
Remember, bookmarks are not the same thing as hyperlinks. Hyperlinks are found in the Hyperlinks panel.
It sounds like you're learning InDesign as you're doing this. You might get a book like Real World InDesign, or watch Lynda.com videos to help you with some of these techniques.
I don't know of an Accessibility interest group.
You should definitely watch these Adobe TV videos:

  • Best practice in Infoprovider & Query design for access by BO Universe

    Hello Experts,
Are there any best practices identified by practitioners or suggested by SAP for development of Infoprovider and queries for access by BO Universe.
Best practices should be from the prospective of performance, design simplicity, adaptability to change etc.
    Appreciate your help.
    Regards,
    Pritesh.

    Thanks Suresh.
My project plan is to build Infocubes & queries which will be then used to build Universe upon it. Thus I am looking for do's & dont's while designing infocubes & queries such that there wont be any issues(performance or other) when accessed by Universe built on it.
Hope I have made it more clear now.
    Regards,
    Pritesh.

  • Design for redundancy of access switch

    hello all,
I have the following design for a site:
Provider delivers channel with HSRP redundant routers, but access level in not redundant and represented by one switch.
Am I correct that there is no way no provide redundancy on access level only with access switches or there are any design proposals?!

As Reza describes, many hosts only have a single connection to network, so that single connection is always a possible point of failure.  But there's a couple of things you can do to minimize the impact of a network infrastructure device failure.
When working with small appliance type switches, you might have multiple smaller switches rather than one large switch.  For example, instead of having one 48 port switch, you might have two 24 ports switches, or six 8 port switches, etc..  If a switch fails, not all hosts lose connectivity.
You can also have additional ports, ideally enough to handle lost of any one unit of hardware,  So, for example, if you have seven 8 port switches, when you only need 48 ports, if a switch fails, you only lose 1/7 of your hosts until they can be repatched into available ports on the other switches.
If some of your hosts have multiple NICs, then there are various method to use the two NICs to avoid a single network unit failure from dropping the host.  Usually only shared servers merit that level of redundancy.

  • Add-in for Access 2010/2013 with Visual Studio 2012 (2013 Preview)

    Hello!
Am i right: Microsoft wants to kill Access in favor of Azure/SQL stuff?
I was unable to find any Projects in Visual Studio 2012/2013 to create an Addon for Access 2010 or 2013 (only Word, Excel, Outlook).
    There is even no Microsoft.Office.Tools.Access.ApplicationFactory
to install add-in to Access App.
    Any solutions for VS 2012?
Or i should use outdated Shared Add-in with VS 2010?
    Thank you!

    Sorry Donald M from Microsoft,
You need to rethink that response.  IDTExtensibility2 is an outdated Office 2003 technology.
Everything EXCEPT the ThisAddIn.designer.cs reference to ApplicationFactory _factory compiles when you switch references in another Office application's VSTO project template to msaccess and dao libraries.  Even the Access icon shows up in Visual
Studio 2013.  The only reason a Ribbon.xml project will not load into Access is that Microsoft hasn't provided the Microsoft.Office.Tools.Access DLL for it.  If you leave the Factory reference pointing to global::Microsoft.Office.Tools.Factory,
the add-in compiles but will not load.
MICROSOFT: Please provide us the missing Factories for MSAccess and OneNote.

  • Minimum permisions required to get Design Console access

    Hi,
What are the minimum permissions required by User (expect for checking the Design Console checkbox on user profile) to access Design Console in OIM 11g R1 (11.1.1.5.0)?
Ofcourse, we donot want to add the user in System Admin group.
We just want that the user is able to modify the lookups thru' DC.
    Thanks

  • Wireless AP design for Wireless IPPhone 7921

FOr a client they are asking 40 Wireless IP Phone, with 3 floors, IPT side I am clear in design, but for access point design I am bit confused with standalone and WLC design.
Could please light me on Wireless design for standalone AP and WLC controller with AP , in the design plan to give both as options.
And also how to confirm a AP is a standalone or it wil work only with WLC.
Please light me with wireless design for IPT.

I would suggest you subcontract this to a partner who is familiar with wireless voice designs. There are a lot of details and caveats to make sure it works.
For example: autonomous APs are not viable for voice installations. You need a controller to prevent the roam times from interrupting the call.
At a minimum, you should read the Voice over Wireless LAN Design Guide:

  • Recommended Design for WAAS in both Data center and Branch Offices

    Hi All,
I need to purchase different appliances for WAAS, but before I decide what to purchase, I need to know exactly how I am going to put these devices so that I can know which one to purchase and how the designs will be.
    My environment is as follows:
I have two core routers (ASR 1000 series) at Data center, two 6509 switches (expecting to insert the ACE module, and FW module) and the I have access switches which connects servers.
At the branch offices, I am expecting to place ASR1000 series also.
Now, I need to know the recommended designs for these WAAS appliances so that, I can know in advance what to purchase(i.e. how many WAAS CM, Core WAE, and Edge WAE).
Any input will highly be appreciated.
    Thanks,

If you purchase the Standard Edition, your license supports:
One installation of Cisco Security Manager on one Windows-based server.
The configuration or management of 5 devices (in the Standard-5 option) or 25 devices (in the Standard-25 option). This excludes Catalyst 6500 and 7600 Series devices and their associated service modules.
If you purchase either the Standard-5 or Standard-25 license, you cannot purchase an incremental device license. Your license is fixed at either 5 or 25 devices.

  • Properties for Accessibility Standards

I have created forms in Adobe Livecycle Designer 8.0 to be used online. In order to make these forms "Accessible" for our website, I need to be able to add form properties and test the accessibility from within Adobe Professional ( this functionality isn't available in Designer), but the Properties options are greyed out when the form is opened in Professional. Designer does allow you to add some properties (Title, author etc.) from within the program but once they're opened in Reader or Professional the properties do not show and therefore do not allow it to pass accessibility testing. We need to be able to use online forms but meeting accessibility standards is mandatory for our website here.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I am truly hoping SOMEONE has an answer for this!  I realize your post was some time ago - in case this went "off forum" here is the background.
In LiveCycle Designer ES, you can set the default "Form locale" under "Defaults" on the File Properties page.  This is essentially the default language for the form.  The problem comes when you generate a pdf from the form.  Regardless of this setting, if you view the Advanced tab under the pdf's document properties, the field "Language" under Reading Options is blank, and greyed out - you cannot change it.  This is the field Adobe uses to check for accessibility- if it is blank it gives an error message upon an accessibility check reading "the form lacks a language specification".  I have searched all over this forum and all over the web trying to figure out how to correct this with no luck.  Any pointers????

  • How to remove app designer migration access from the Developer id

    Team,
Please guide me with steps to remove app designer migration access from the Developer id.
I want that developer can create the project but do not have migration access.
    Rgds,

Did you already remove the other permission lists/roles you identified in your previous response like I told you to do in my first response?  The user can have no permission lists that grant this access.  Working with a clone of VP1 is a bad strategy.  Security should be handled from the bottom up, adding what is required for a user to perform their necessary functions.  Cloning VP1 and removing roles/permissions is security from the top down and will undoubtedly leave you with a user that is still granted more access than you like even after removing this particular access.  You should really be working with your companies security admin on this, they may have a standard way of doing this.  Many places I've been use custom roles and permission lists when deviating from the Oracle delivered security.

  • Importing a pkg with rely on server storage and roles for access control

Hi we run std 2008 r2.  I'm reading documentation on prot levels during pkg import to catalog at
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms141747(v=sql.105).aspx but unfortunately the definition of prot level "rely on server storage and roles for access control"
isn't clear.  They used the prot level name to define it which didn't help me.
This option looks appealing but it isn't clear why I need to enter a pswd when choosing this option.  Will my peers need to know that pswd when they export?  Will the sql agent job need to present that pswd when running?  If I just keep current
prot level "encrypt with user" will the agent job be able to run it?  I'm sure it (agent) isn't running with my creds now.  Also, how can I tell what prot level it was deployed with last?  I rt clicked on the pkg in the catalog
and don't see anything obvious about that.  I already understand that on export prot level is changed to encrypt with user.
I'm going to look at the sql agen job right now to see what creds it runs with.

First thing to understand is that protection level is used for determining how package (dtsx) file have to be protected. Once package is deployed in server and executed from agent, the conventional way is to use method of configurations or parameters if
2012 to get required connection etc values and execute using it. It never uses the values that were set during the design time. So it doesnt matter what protection level was so far as its based on config
However if you're planning to export existing package to your system and do modification thats where protection level comes to play. If its set to any of ENcryptSensitive... type value then you'll to provide the value (either a passowrd or your userkey which
it takes automatically from login info) to see the sensitive info (connection info, passwords etc) The package will still open and so far as you manually type in missing values you will be able to execute the package. If protection level is set to one of ENcrptAll
then you will have no way to open package itself unless you provide password/ have correct userkey.
The rely on server storage option uses sql server security context itself ie it doesnt do any encryption within package by itself but will assume values based on sqlserver security. This is used when you store package itself in SQLServer itself (MSDB)

  • How will an external Hard drive designed for the macbook Pro work with my White Macbook?  My  white macbook has a Firewire 400 and the G-Tech HD has a 800 to 400 compatible cable for the firewire.

I am asking this because I want the G-Tech Hard drive  says that it is designed for the macbook pro.  Yet, I want to back up faster with by using my firewire 400 which is not an option on the one designed for the white macbook that does not have a firewire (only a USB port.)  The G-Tech Hard drive comes with the 800 to 400 compatible cable and has 5400 RPM with 750 GB.  Also, I've heard that laptops with low battery (mine all the time)  won't have the power for a bus powered Hard drive (as in no ac plug in adaptor.)  Can I just plug in my laptop?  Any one know the answers from experience with this hard drive?

As far as I know, if a harddrive works with a Macpro, it should work with the Macbook: if your Macbook is low on power, plug in the AC adapter
If your Macbook has a firewire port, then it should be fine. BUt i would do somemore research first.

  • Is this the best design for asynchronous notifications (such as email)? Current design uses Web Site, Azure Service Bus Queue, Table Storage and Cloud Service Worker Role.

I am asking for feedback on this design. Here is an example user story:
As a group admin on the website I want to be notified when a user in my group uploads a file to the group.
Easiest solution would be that in the code handling the upload, we just directly create an email message in there and send it. However, this seems like it isn't really the appropriate level of separation of concerns, so instead we are thinking to have a separate
worker process which does nothing but send notifications. So, the website in the upload code handles receiving the file, extracting some metadata from it (like filename) and writing this to the database. As soon as it is done handling the file upload it then
does two things: Writes the details of the notification to be sent (such as subject, filename, etc...) to a dedicated "notification" table and also creates a message in a queue which the notification sending worker process monitors. The entire sequence
is shown in the diagram below.
My questions are: Do you see any drawbacks in this design? Is there a better design? The team wants to use Azure Worker Roles, Queues and Table storage. Is it the right call to use these components or is this design unnecessarily complex? Quality attribute
requirements are that it is easy to code, easy to maintain, easy to debug at runtime, auditable (history is available of when notifications were sent, etc...), monitor-able. Any other quality attributes you think we should be designing for?
    More info:
We are creating a cloud application (in Azure) in which there are at least 2 components. The first is the "source" component (for example a UI / website) in which some action happens or some condition is met that triggers a second component or "worker"
to perform some job. These jobs have details or metadata associated with them which we plan to store in Azure Table Storage. Here is the pattern we are considering:
    Steps:
    Condition for job met.
Source writes job details to table.
    Source puts job in queue.
    Asynchronously:
    Worker accepts job from queue.
    Worker Records DateTimeStarted in table.
Queue marks job marked as "in progress".
    Worker performs job.
Worker updates table with details (including DateTimeCompleted).
    Worker reports completion to queue.
    Job deleted from queue.
Please comment and let me know if I have this right, or if there is some better pattern. For example sake, consider the work to be "sending a notification" such as an email whose template fields are filled from the "details" mentioned in
    the pattern.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your posting.
This development mode can exclude some errors, such as the file upload complete at the same time... from my experience, this is a good choice to achieve the goal.

  • Print Layout Designer for UDO

    Hi,
Can we design report with print layout designer for UDO forms?
If yes, how do we accomplish this?
If not, is there any other alternative?
    I am using 2004B. Thanks.

I use the iTextSharp project to create PDF's (http://itextsharp.sourceforge.net/)... its free and it works (A little hard to use, but it works). A more simple PDF-project are SharpPDF (http://sharppdf.sourceforge.net/). This is also free and very easy to use, but not that many features.

    Hi all,
I'm experiencing some problems with this script, and I think knowing what the error is will help me a lot to understand better how applescript handles access to files.
When i launch this script it tells me somethihng like "document some object has not been opened" (could be slightly different in english).
So, i guess is a problem with openening and closing, but as you can see i open and close the doc, so I shouldn't encounter this problem. Do I?

Each time your application is run the files associated with it will also be released, so all you need to do is make sure that each open is balanced with a close.  This can be done easiest by using a handler that has been tested, so you don't have to worry about leaving something out elsewhere in your script.  For example:
    on run -- example
set report to ((path to desktop) as text) & "myFile.txt"
      write_toFile_("testing one" & return, report)
write_toFile_("testing two, three" & return, report)
      write_toFile_("testing again" & return, report)
    end run
    on write_toFile_(someThing, someFile)
      try
set theOpenFile to (open for access someFile with write permission)
write someThing to theOpenFile starting at eof
        close access theOpenFile
on error -- make sure file is closed on any error
        try
          close access theOpenFile
        end try
      end try
    end write_toFile_
