Designing for the iPad 3 Questions

Hi Guys,
I am currently working on designing a digital magazine intended for the iPad 3.
When I design my psd working files at 1536 x 2048px at 300 ppi and then place them in the indesign file they appear to be about half the size that I would think they should be. So I exported the page as a PDF from indesign and then opened it in photoshop. When opened it's dimensions were 5588 x 7453 px at 300 ppi. So I saved this and placed it back in indesign and it appears to fit correctly.
This seems funny to me as it ends up being larger than a print publication. It ends up being around 21" x 29".
I know I must be doing something wrong but if I could please get a little bit of help it would be great.
I guess my basic question is how should I set my psd files up when designing for the iPad 3?
Thanks!

Hi Joe,
It seems like you are having some trouble with your ppi settings. If you are going to be designing for the screen (e.g. iPad, web) you need to use 72ppi. It may seem a bit odd as the iPad's actual ppi is significantly higher than this, but thats just the way it is. If you change your settings to 72 ppi, everything should go back to normal.
EDIT: Bob Bringhurst explains the difference between effective and actual ppis in this thread here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4319794#4319794
Cheers!

  • Any best practices for the iPad mini????

I am in the beginning stages of designing my mag for the iPad.... now the iPad mini seems to be all the hype and the latest news states that the mini may out sell the larger one.
So... I know that the dimensions are 1x1 on bumping down to the smaller screen... but what about font sizes? what about the experience? Anyone already ahead of the game?
I have my own answers to these questions, but any one out there have some best practice advice or links to some articles they find informative...

I think 18-pt body text is fine for the iPad 2 but too small for the iPad mini. Obviously, it depends on your design and which font you're using, but it seems like a good idea to bump up the font size a couple points to account for the smaller screen.
For the same reason, be careful with small buttons and small tap areas.
I've also noticed that for whatever reason, MSOs and scrollable frames in PNG/JPG articles look great on the iPad 2 but look slightly more pixelated on the iPad Mini. It might just be my imagination.
Make sure that you test your design on the Mini.

  • I used my iPhone maps it works very well. Is there an application for the iPad that could be used on a boat?

I used my iPhone maps it works very well. Is there an application for the iPad that could be used on a boat?

    Indeed :-)
This forum is riddled with questions by users that cannot get their computer to do what they want, *despite* the fact they use a very precise and (usually) unambiguous method of telling it want they want it to do -- a programming language. Making it comprehend *natural* language is, by any way of measuring, a number of degrees more difficult.
That said: in what way would a computer program (advanced or "dumb") be able to help the OP? Spell check is one -- but it's not a *fact* that anything written *badly* equals nonsense. In politics, for example, the most eloquent speakers still manage to make a fool of themselves :D The same goes for "grammar". Of course, bad grammar is more difficult to understand -- EVEN for a human. So a computer is bound to fail on that as well.
Fact checking then? I usually can't even find what I want in one go with Almighty Google (which seems to turn things around: if it cannot find "enough" web pages with the exact phrase you asked it, it automatically assumes you are interested in synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, and other *unrelated* stuff! Yeah THANK you but I want to find what I typed in!)
A good starting point would be to define in more detail what this hypothetical software *ought* to do -- that needs to be a bit more concrete than "I want it to do my job for me."

Ok - then since the answer to your question is NO - then you have all of ....
    Knowledgeable feedback
that there is on the subject. There is no way to connect any device to the iPad except for a camera using the camera connection kit.

  • Do all the apps on the iPad work for the iPad mini?

Do all the apps on the iPad work for the iPad mini?

    Hi
Have you progressed your evidence based knowledge on this issue?
    I recently posted elsewhere:
"I am very interested in this issue as I want an ipad for 7 months travel in Southern Africa and the particular app I want is Tracks4 Africa map app On App store it says "This app is designed for both iphone and ipad" and later on "Requires iOS4.3 or later." and "optimised for iphone 5"
In emails with the developers their junior tech assistant says it is not compatible with an ipad mini with wi-fi.  My attempts to differentiate whether its compatible with an ipad mini running both wi-fi and mobile has fallen on deaf ears.
Does the ipad mini offer 4.3?
Could you understand why an app wouldn't be compatible with a wi-fi only app but would be ok on a wi-fi and mobile unit?"
    Thanks

  • I've just bought a few apps for the iPad, is it possible to download and use them for the Mac?

Hi, I knew that all apps after buying them could be downoad to other Apple's devices. The last week I bought Keynote for the iPad and I need for my Mac too, but I don't know why I can't download it. Shoul I buy Keynote for the Mac too? Is the same with other apps?

Applications are designed for either iOS or OSX.  You must buy a version for each type of OS.  But you can share that app among all like devices (iPad/iPhone and iMac/MBP/Macmini)

  • Will old iPad apps have to be rewritten for the iPad 3?

When running apps designed for the first two iPads on the iPad 3, what will happen? Will they:
    - look exactly the same as on the iPad I and II, so therefore will have to be rewritten to take advantage of the higher resolution?
    - *automatically* use the higher resolution without rewriting?
    - show up in a tiny window in the middle of a sea of black, like when you run iPhone apps on an iPad?

And I would presume that will also mean that using iPhone apps on the iPad will look even worse and maybe need a 3X key instead of 2X (or something like that)
If Apple was smart they told app developers a long time ago to make their apps scalable for larger resolutions

  • Is there a stylus with a nib for the iPad...and an app that goes with it?

Is there a stylus available for the ipad that looks and feels like a pen? I asked the question on the highstreet the other day and was shown a stylus that was as thick as my finger!!! (I think it was made by a company called Genius?). I am used to using an IBM tablet pc which comes with a stylus that can write in quite fine lines- can this be done on the iPad? Also if the answer is yes, I'd like to know if there is an application similar to Windows journal whereby you can save notes into your own file structure? Can anyone help- surely these are basic things for a tablet pc- I don't know why the folks on the highstreet can't help confirm this??? Thank you

The iPad screen uses a different technology to the tablet PC to which you refer and any 'stylus' needs to have sufficient width and to be able to transmit an electrical current. That's why the styli for iPads are usually thick and made from a 'sponge' like material.
You could try http://www.beststylus.com/ I have one of theirs on order but haven't received it yet. The videos look encouraging, but you'll never get the thin line experience of the tablet PC. (On the other hand you couldn't really use your finger as a stylus on the tablet; different ideas about input).
On the app side you may want to look at Note Taker Hd (works quite well without a stylus) and Mental Note (this is what I'm hoping the stylus will help with).

  • Do I need to pay for the iPad version of an app if I have it for the iPhone

I received an iPad as a gift from my wife, and I also own an iPhone. Since there are some apps that work on both systems, do I need to pay again for an iPad app that I currently have on my iPhone? App in question is MLB.TV. I currently own it for the iPhone and would like to get it for the iPad (since I that the iPad version is really good). Do I need to pay twice for the same app?

The apps are divided into three categories on my iTunes:
    1) iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad apps (These will transfer to your iPad and are optimized for iPad, automatically, or uncheck any you don't want on your iPad under "Apps" when your iPad is connected to your computer to sync. These apps have a + sign by them to indicate that they are for multi-platforms.)
2)iPhone and iPod Touch apps (You can use these also, on your iPad. These are usually vertical apps and you can select 2X after opening them on your iPad to make them bigger. The resolution may not be very good on these apps, since they are for the smaller screens.)
    3) iPad apps (These have to be purchased specifically for the iPad. They usually look and perform great since they are made for iPad. There are many free versions of iPad apps which I already had on my iPhone and iPod Touch.)

  • Exporting transparent pages for the iPad

    Confusing.
    Baffled.
So bear with me as I attempt to explain what I'm so earnestly trying to figure out is even possible; and if so, how to do it..
I'm attempting to export an epub for the iPad that contains images [without a background] from Photoshop. In Photoshop, the layers build on top of one another. (Think of physical transparencies printed out with different images and as they stack on top of one another they build a conglomerate image)
So in theory, I want to export these pages from InDesign as transparencies, that when the page is turned on the iPad, you can see through it as the images stack on top of one another.
It seems confusing to me because of the front and back of each page in InDesign.. It's like dealing with two pages instead of one. For example, in a facing pages layout, if I had an image on the 3rd page [lets imagine that's on the right in the layout], would the 4th page [on the left] be showing the transparent side of the 3rd page? I just want it to be read as a literal transparent page [the 3rd and 4th page conglomerate] that you can see through to the 5th.
Is this possible? Do I need to set a certain transparency option in InDesign when I export?
Or is this just not feasible..
    Please help.
    I'm lost.
    Thank you

You're saying you want your epub to look as if it's printed on transparent acetate? I don't do epub, myself, but I don't think that's going to happen. If it were possible, you'd have to specify an opaque page (the equivalent of a piece of white paper) for all "normal" pages to keep them readable, and that's just something ID is not set up to do.
ID simply doesn't care what sort of stock you print on. What is on the page is what will output to the medium on which your doc is printed (ID is first and foremost an application designed to make layouts for print). Nothing is genreated in terms of background other than what you yourself might add. A PDF is theoretically has no additional white background, but Acrobat displays one so your desktop doesn't show through. I imagine the same thing happens with epub readers. If no background is specified, the reader provides something.

  • Do I need to pay for an app again if I were to get it for the iPad?

I just received an iPad as a gift from my wife. I also own an iPhone. There are some paid apps that I have that work on both systems. The one in question is the MLB.TV app. Since I already own the iPhone version of it, do I need to pay AGAIN for the iPad version?
    Thanks!

If it's a universal version (denoted by a "+" on the icon in the App Store) or an iPhone app and both devices are synced to the same account, you don't have to pay again. If there is a separate app for the iPad (often has HD after the name), then yes, you will have to pay again.

  • Has anyone used or researched using Peavey AmpKit LiNK and it's Applications in GB for the iPad?

Has anyone used or resarched using Peavey AmpKit LiNK Hi-Fidelity Guitar Interface for Ampkit and Ampkit+ Applications on the ipad and with GarageBand. It seems that AmpKit unit gets better reviews than the iRig as an interface...
A couple of questions... Does it work with GB (iPad and GB 11)... There is a recording function on the Ampkit Application... would this be compataible with GB for the ipad and also GB11 on the imac...
Also if you have any experinces / thoughts on the usabilitiy of the AmpKit unit with the ipad that would be great...

I have both the Ampkit link and a iRig. The AmpKit link is much better it sounds about the same as the iRig but much less noise. It works great with Garageband. I don't use the Ampkit software for recording. I have used AmpKit+ and Amplitube Fender on the ipad plugged into a PA and as a modeler for recording in Garageband (Mac).

  • Best Video Settings For The iPad.

    Hi everyone,
Does anyone know this ? "Best Video Settings For The iPad".
Kindly and in simple terms state the best possible settings to be use when converting videos for the iPad that optimizes the entire screen size/ area without a black borderline around your video. it's rather frustrating to have many technical jargons online without anyone giving real pointers at real values in conversion settings.
    Thanks in anticipation.

Kindly and in simple terms state the best possible settings to be use when converting videos for the iPad that optimizes the entire screen size/ area without a black borderline around your video.
It is impossible to answer your question without knowing both the aspect ratio of the source file and your personal preferences for displaying it on a 4:3 iPad screen.
Basically, you have two options here when converting files of one aspect ratio for display on a screen of another aspect. You can distort the original display to "fill" the ipad screen. (E.g., you can make a widescreen movie exactly fill your iPad screen but then people and objects will look tall and skinny.) The other option is to convert at the original aspect ratio and simply use the iPad "zoom" option to force your widescreen movie to fill your 4:3 screen by scaling the height of your movie to fill the screen and allowing the left and right edges of you movie to be cropped from your view. You have no other choices here other than living with the defaulted black areas.
