  • Why can I not see Norton's approval of sites?

Before the new update, I could see my antivirus, Norton's approval of which sites are safe to go. Now, after the update, I cannot see the Norton's check mark or anything that says it is okay to use.

First, please excuse me if I've posted in the wrong forum and hopefully someone will direct me to the right one. I also apologize for the length of this but I've spent the last 5 days dealing with HP support and getting help from TechGuy.org. HP hasn't been
particularly helpful. Through TechGuy.org, we've eliminated the possibility that the problem I'm about to describe is related to a virus or malware.
As this is my wife's computer, I have no idea when this started happening, but at random intervals the computer would sometimes display the message "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save
your work." Sometimes this error code accompanies the message "Error 1722 RPC Server is unavailable". Other times there is no warning and the system just reboots. At the same time, my wife began having problems with our HP Photosmart C410A printer.
In checking I saw that there was a new driver. When I attempted to install just the basic driver, the installation would stop and indicate that the Windows Firewall must be running. I disabled all of Norton Internet Services setting an tried to activate the
firewall. I would then get this error message: "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x800706d9".
HP suggested I uninstall Norton Internet Security, use the HP Driver Uninstall Utility and try a reinstallation using their complete software package while activation the Windows Firewall. I could get the firewall activated nor could I get the drivers installed.
I then removed all the HP software using their installer. However there still seems to be bits "floating" about. I reinstalled NIS.
TechGuy.org suggested that there might be a BIOS issue and there are two updates available. They also suggested I may have to wipe the drive and do a clean reinstallation of Windows 7. That just didn't sound right.
In checking the Event Viewer the following error show up repeatedly at random times, which also correspond, usually, with a reboot. Here is a partial copy of the log:

  • My MacBook Pro will not open any application or program that requires internet, even though I am connected to the web.

My MacBook Pro will not open any app or program that requires Internet, even though I am connected to the web. I recently installed Norton AntiVirus and think it may have changed a setting that I couldn't find. I uninstalled Norton and it didn't help. Every time I open Safari, iTunes or any other program that tries to connect to the Internet, it crashes. Strangely enough, Skype still works, but nothing else.
    I have OSx 10.6.8.
I have tried erasing plists, and all the standard troubleshooting, ie resetting modem, restarting computer, reloading Safari from disk.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.

I uninstalled Norton and it didn't help.
To properly uninstall Norton software follow these instructions - Locate Symantic Solutions folder inside the Applications folder at the root level of your HD, launch the Symantec Uninstaller application, select the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate, Norton AntiVirus & Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect entries and click the Uninstall button.
Confirm your decision when prompted and then enter your administrator password in the space provided.
Retart your computer & Norton should be gone for good.
If the above does not work, download a copy of Symantec’s RemoveSymantecMacFiles removal utility.  This utility will launch Terminal & remove the Norton components.

  • Cannot Install Driver

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit

    Motherboard: Gateway, SX2370
Antivirus: Norton Internet Security, Updated and Enabled
Apparently as a result of a Windows update, my wife's computer, which is connected to our printer through an ethernet connection via our Linksys E3000 router, lost that connection. As the driver was out of date anyway, I downloaded just the updated driver and attempted to install it after making sure all traces of the old version were removed using the HP uninstaller.
I have tried now, inummerable times to install the driver. I either get the the point wher the install asks what type of connection I have and when it shows via ethernet I get an error message about the MpsSvc (Windows 7 firewall) being stopped or the install fails generating a message that says it's missing a setupfile. I have tried disabling the Norton Internet Security firewall and AV and still the install fails. I have tried activating the Windows Firewall, via the Task Manager (with the NIS Firewall off) to no avail.
One of the solutions I found on this forum from an HP Expert was to use the full software package to install the driver. Even though I do NOT want all the programs that come bundled with it (there used to be the option of choosing what you wanted but no longer) I tried that. I again got the whole firewall scenario message and then had to uninstall all the programs that I didn't want in the first place.
There are two ther computers in the house connected wirelessly to the printer and both work fine. I even tried the wireless route with this computer to no avail.
I know I am not the only one encounter this issue as I seen other postings but I've yet to see a solution that works. I'm trying not to get both frustrated and angry but this should be that difficult a problem to resolve. Prior to both the Windows update and the driver update from HP, this computer worked fine with this printer. There is a conflict between HP's software and Windows 7. Please give me a solution that actually works.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

This did not help at all. I've run a level 4 uninstall and tried both just the driver and whole package and the process halts stating that Windows Firewall must be running. I am also finding that the level 4 uninstall did not remove all traces of HP printer related programs (the C410A is the only HP device connected to this system BTW)
I have completely uninstalled Norton Internet Security and tried to activate the Windows Firewall without success. After reinstalling NIS, I consulted with a site that deals with malware issues. After several tests, they could not find any traces of rootkits, viruses or malware. So, that is not the issue.
When I tried to activate the Windows Firewall, I get the following error notice, "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error Code 0x800706d9". I continue to get this message at random intervals, "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work". Sometimes I also get this error message as well, "Error 1722 RPC Server is unavailable."
In checking the event log I found the following errors listed, some corresponding to spontainious reboots.

  • Help - Windows crashes after installing upgrade today....

    Hi,
System:                Windows XP, 2002, Service Pack 3 (not sure how to tell if 32 bit or 64 bit?  My graphics are 64-bit, I think)
    Computer:          Dell Inspiron 530
Processor:           Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
Graphics card:   ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Browser 1:          Firefox 3.6.14 (upgraded today)
    Browser 2:          IE 8.0.6001.18702
    Flash:                    10.2.152.32 (installed today)
    Antivirus:            Norton Internet Security 17.8.0.5
Firewall:               Motorola SBG900 (mentioning only because it has caused me other issues in the past)
Tried upgrading Firefox and Flash (for Firefox) today as requested. Everything installed fine. Tried to watch a video clip on CNN.com and got the blue screen and crash.
I uninstalled both, and reinstalled. Crashed again.
I then tried uninstalling both again, and downloaded the Flash for IE, to see if it was a Flash issue or a Firefox issue. This version crashed too - blue screen with error message.
A friend thought it might be a RAM issue, and asked me to clean up my msconfig - which I did. No fix.
I then went to the Display manager, found the graphics card, and looked for updated to the device driver. Alas, the system thinks I have latest and greatest.
That’s about the extent of my computer knowledge. I don’t know how to disable my Norton, and frankly, not sure it’s a great idea, as it has my software firewall in it….  Not sure how/why/if that would even help?
Here’s the bottom part of the error message I got one of the time I got the blue screen crash (in case it helps)….
    ***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xE0000001, 0xBA490925, 0xA880D820, 0x00000000)
    ***watchdog.sys - Address BA490925, base at BA90000, Date stamp 480254ab
Simplest fix for me would be if there was a way to get the old version of Flash back… but there doesn’t seem to be an older version archived that I can find….
Can someone help/offer solutions that a non-computer geek might be able to follow (and not mess up other stuff on the computer)?  Thanks!  :-)  It's been 4 hours and counting spent on this so far....  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Much thanks!
    Liz

    Liz,
    1) Under START, PROGRAMS, DELL ACCESSORIES... find Dell Service code... click it.  Write down the service tag (looks like "5DF78SnS")
    2) Go to "Dell Drivers & Downloads"
    3) Figure where to put the service code... and click okay.
What you will see is a list of drivers for YOUR specific computer- these are the lastest drivers and some MAY already be installed.
    At the very least
    1) Update the BIOS
    2) Update the Video Drivers.
They all come with very clearly written instructions.
Then consider repairing your browser again.
You might then want to update the "Dell Recommends...".  Let it scan your computer.
    Turn off your computer.
    Turn on a hot bath.
    Throw the computer in it.
Use postcards to communicate with your friends and CDs to listen to music.

  • My Thunderbird has stopped downloading messages--how can I get it to function again. I have rebooted and downloaded a new version.

I disconnected my antivirus (Norton) and tried again, with no luck. Thunderbird says that I have 10 messages and tries to download, but then hangs up and quits. This happened all of a sudden with no seeming cause.

Thanks for trying to help, but the instructions (see below) are too complicated for me to follow. So I'll just have to leave my Thunderbird with its broken wings alone until perhaps a new version comes out in which this problem is resolved. I never experienced it before--until I installed Windows 8.1 (so maybe that's the problem!).
If you're not signed in to Windows, tap or click the power icon Power icon from the sign-in screen, hold Shift, and then tap or click Restart
Or, if you're already signed in:
Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)
Under PC settings, tap or click General.
Under Advanced startup, tap or click Restart now.
On the Choose an option screen, tap or click Troubleshoot.
    Tap or click Startup Settings.
    Tap or click Restart.
On the Startup Settings screen, choose the startup setting you want.
Sign in to your PC with a user account that has administrator rights.
Some options, such as safe mode, start Windows in a limited state where only essential programs are started. Other options start Windows with advanced features (typically used by system admins and IT professionals). For more info, go to the Microsoft website for IT professionals.

  • Microsoft-esque problems on my Mac?

G'day, all. Have owned my first Mac for almost a fortnight now, and am generally loving it. That having been said, I have a few issues I need to be walked through, as I still don't understand the OS well enough to intelligently explore it without potential problems.
First, I'd experienced frequent crashes of Safari...I switched to the Safari Beta, but it still just locks and crashes. Frustrated, I went to Firefox. The only thing that makes IT any better is that my previous pages show up when I restart my Web browser; otherwise, it tends to do the same thing. What gives? I've tried running the diagnostics and built-in 'repair tools,' but it doesn't seem to have done much good.
Next, when I tried to switch from Firefox to Safari (thinking the browser was acting up), I kept getting multiple blank pages on Firefox, and had to close it down with a Force Quit. When I then tried to open Safari, not only would it not open, but the wallpapers on both monitors switched every time I clicked on the Safari icon to try to open it (the black arrow would flash a few times and quit). Though that happened only once (for about 3 minutes), it hasn't re-occurred...yet. Any ideas here?
Finally, being a paranoid former-PC owner, naturally I had to get antivirus (Norton, sans the troublesome packet), security and other programs up and running (Mac Cleanse, Mac Scanner and IP Securitas) early on. Could any of these be causing the aforementioned problems, and if so, can they be worked-around without losing the protection they give?
BTW, I also use a hardware firewall, which hasn't given any difficulty so far.
Finally, someone mentioned I might want to run a program called Vidalia. I can't figure it out, and want to know if it's needed.
Forgive my reprinting War and Peace, but I can't find answers I can understand anywhere else, and I'm a graphic designer/writer, not a UNIX pro. Kudos to any and all who can ease my learning curve.
    Chuck

'Ello, Klaus, and thanks for the prompt reply. I'm a hard-won convert to Mac-dom (since I got serious about graphic design), and decided to dive in head-first, as it were. For the most part, it's been a hard slog to get up to speed on Mac OS X, but it's worth it for the speed and beauty I have now.
Did as you suggested, but none of the files you mentioned were in the Safari folder, or any other such folder. I use a widget in Dashboard to keep my permissions proper and empty the cache and cookies after each session, so maybe I've inadvertently done what you asked.(?)
Hasn't happened in about 5 hours now, and I've just finished installing all the OS X updates and Adobe CS3 Premium, so I must be ok for now. (Now that I've said that...) But I digress.
The router has long been a fixture for me, as I know that the best defense is a good offense. I've had no conflicts between the router and the Mac previously, so I'm assuming I'm still good there. The other programs all came highly-recommended from either Apple or MacWorld or CNet, so I generally tend to trust 'em...just guess I won't use them so often, eh? (Some of it has to do with privacy issues and not wanting anyone but me in my computer, even though there's nothing but intellectual property there - 'nothing but' - hahaha.)
Anyway, back to the point. The Safari folder only had 3 files in it, history and two others that I can't name right now, but that had nothing like the names you gave me, so I left them be.
As to Vidalia, it's a privacy program, and that's about all I know so far, though inputs and opinions on it would be MOST welcome!
I went to //tor.eff.org for info after reading of it in MacWorld magazine, though the following in parenths came from its site:
(Tor: anonymity online............Tor is a toolset for a wide range of organizations and people that want to improve their safety and security on the Internet. Using Tor can help you anonymize web browsing and publishing, instant messaging, IRC, SSH, and other applications that use the TCP protocol. Tor also provides a platform on which software developers can build new applications with built-in anonymity, safety, and privacy features.
Tor aims to defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal anonymity and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security. Communications are bounced around a distributed network of servers called onion routers, protecting you from websites that build profiles of your interests, local eavesdroppers that read your data or learn what sites you visit, and even the onion routers themselves.
Tor's security is improved as its user base grows and as more people volunteer to run servers. Please consider volunteering your time or volunteering your bandwidth. And remember that this is development code—while we believe Tor is better than all the other options out there at what it does, it's still not a good idea to rely on any current anonymity systems if you really need strong anonymity.)
Would like to continue 'chatting' via email if you don't mind, off-topic (I lived in Oxford for some years whilst stationed there). I'm at [email protected]. Cheers!

  • Driven to Distraction

    Hi,
I appreciate that everyone has a problem here, and we're all equally desperate for help, but I'm seriously in need of it!!!! I've read through days worth of posts and nothing seems to fit my problem.
I've spent a lot of time adding my music library into itunes, and then suddenly last week it started playing up on me. I can't determine what I might have done that caused it.
The main itunes window seems to like to send itself to the front of everything. What this means is that as soon as I open a new window within itunes (e.g the box that opens when you "add folder to library") it vanishes behind the main screen. When you click on itunes the box briefly flashes up but dissappears again instantly. Everything else in itunes then becomes redundant as there is already a window/dialogue box open and the only way to close itunes is to ctrl alt delete.
I've also noticed that after this has happened, if I don't shut down itunes and carry on with other programmes, every minute or so itunes forces itself to the front of all the programmes and you have to switch back to other ones via the taskbar.
The most frustrating part of this is that I cannot add any more music to my ipod.
I'm hoping that someone will be able to help my plight, please!!!!
Oh and i've noticed that some ppl have had issues with itunes because of their security software. If it helps I'm using norton.
    thanks

You may try afew steps to correct this. First make sure your antivirus (Norton I take it) is up to date using Libveupdate and then scan your system for any viruses, trojans, worms ect ect. Then scan your system for any malware with your adware/spyware program. If you do not have one you can search the web for one or download.com
Look on the web site that made your PC (Like Dell or HP) and see if theres any updates for your system or patches that cure conflicts there software may cause with iTunes.
After that if you have no virus and after removing malware your still having problems, look at your Event viewer there may be some helpful info there telling what conflicts iTunes is causing or having with other programs ect ect on your system. to get there goto control panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer
Use chkdisk (Error Checking in Win XP) to find and fix errors in the system files. to do this goto "My Computer" Right click your Harddrive (Usualy C Drive) Hit Properties> "Tool" tab under Error checking hit check now, check the box beside "Automaticly Fix System Files" and hit OK. select "Yes" in the following pop up window and reboot. during the boot up you will see a blue screen and it will show you its scaning the system and when its done it will boot back into windows.
Also when uninstalling iTunes uninstall ALL things quicktime in add/remove as well. then when reinstalling iTunes and quicktime make sure norton is turned off or disabled. you may want to download and install the quicktime standalone to at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

  • Flash Player Plugin pushing cpu to 100% on Laptop

I know there is many (many many) discussions on this topic, but I was hoping to get a clear answer on how to solve this issue. It seems that my issues with cpu have been going off and on for a bit now, but in the last month or so it's been practically every single day.
Within the first hour from boot up everything is okay with the videos and flash media, but after that it starts to hike up and next thing I know my cpu is at 100% and the computer is hanging and moments later it's telling me if I want to wait for the plugin to respond. If I say yes it stalls some more and then tries to keep going but it's super choppy and it makes horrible noises, if I say no then it says that the flash player plugin crashed and to refresh- just for it to go through that again. Something strange about this is that when I put my laptop into sleep mode (not shutdown) for 30 or so minutes and come back, my system drops the cpu levels and it is fine again until another hour then the whole thing starts again. I use Norton 360 so it's constantly telling me that Adobe flash is using too much cpu or firefox (browser I use) and the performance log norton has about my computer tells me that just yesterday I had a moment of being at 100% for 10 minutes straight!
I've tried seeing if it was really just firefox doing this as it does take a lot of cpu on it's own, but after going into firefox safe mode the problem with flash jumping high in cpu was still there.
Does anyone have a solution? (I'm not a tech expert, just your normal everyday user so please make it as simple as possible!)
If you need more ifo let me know! Thanks!

But when i try to compile something using javac in Command promt i get the error Javac is not recognized or something.
I had this on my XP too but i added a line to Autoexec.bat and it worked.
Now, i have tried to edit Autoexec, no succses.
Tried to set environment variables, no succses.
    Any guesses?
Maybe its my antivirus Norton 360 that blocks me from changing in Autoexec?
Please if anyone have done this on vista respond with some few steps on how to do this.
I really want to program java on my vista without having to type the hole path to Javac when i want to compile.
    Thanks in advance.
