Desk top 'acts' like not connected, but is

My desktop will not sign on to mail or internet but my laptop and pad will. The desk top is my base station, so obviously wifi is working since all others can go online. Whats up?

Apple products and other third party products create a WEP key in a different way, so if you just type in the passphrase to generate a WEP key, you maybe producing a HEX number that is completely different than the one produce by other devices. The idea is to only use the HEX number generated by one of the machines, and then enter that number into all of your devices. Airport Utility will show the WEP key under Network Equivalency Password. Enter that number when connecting from your Windows computer. As with everything else, you should be using the same Broadcast Name or SSID throughout your system, and you should, as stated in this thread, use the same broadcast channel on all of the devices. "6" is the most common, and, if you have a lot of neighbours with wireless devices, you might be losing a signal as all of their devices are competing for broadcast space; if so, change to 1, or 11. European devices can also go up to 13, I believe.

My hard drive icon is gone from desk top and does not show up in spotlight or finder searches!

recently my hard drive icon has disappeared from my Macbook Pro (10.7.4) desk top and does not show up in spotlight or finder searches! I have tried several fixes posted online for earlier operating systems with no luck.
Also, when I connect my external hard drive the icon does not appear on the desl top nor in the finder either, making looking for documents impossible.
Help!!!

In "finder" click "finder" then "preferences" and navigate to the "general" tab.
Select which items you would like to have show on your desktop.

Just confirming, when you have the trouble, the wifi icon is grayed-out or has all bars showing? I believe you are saying that is is grayed-out - not connected to your wireless router.
I have a Mini that started to lose connection to the Internet after the 10.7.3 update but still showed the wireless as connected. If I pinged the wireless router, I would get a quarter of the packets failing to return. The router was a Netgear that supported 802.11N connections. As a test, I set it to 802.11G (54MBps) maximum and the Mini worked fine for a week - no dropouts. And for the other devices that did support 802.11N, while there was a noticeable delay with downloads and pages loading, they still worked.
As another test, I changed the Netgear router to a Billion 802.11N model and the Mini has not had a problems since. (It is still using 802.11g). So it could be your router that is causing trouble for your Mac.

I was having the same problem. I've probably screwed things up royally by doing so, but I just went ahead and created another Apple ID with a different email address, and will inform anyone who I will be using FaceTime with to use the new one. I tried using the "multiple ID finder" thing but it only ever returned the ID I'm using right now; I can't verify the email address this ID is associated with for some reason.
It's a clusterfark.

I had the same issue and I'm running Windows 7. Tried working with technical support for several hours but they were no help. They just had me doing the same things over and over, offering no real answers. I finally got fed up and have decided to return my product for a full refund.

Thanks for your reply.
I have just found out what's wrong. I went to the 'more info' section of my Chitchat application and it took me to a link where it explained that Yahoo Chat has ditched chatting with the Java protocol and chatters can now only chat via the Yahoo Messenger protocol, which is Yahoo Instant Messenger with Voice. Unfortunately Yahoo doesn't provide a platform for Yahoo Voice for Macintosh computers. Though the original link I went to provides another link to a thing called 'Adium' from which a Mac can access Yahoo Chat's new protocol, although it's not fully developed yet.
Oh...and thanks so much for letting me know about the Java update release. I did not know that I have to upgrade my system first to recieve the latest update information.

Annoying Mail problem -- Mail thinks it's not connected, but it is.

My mail.app shows warning icons (grayed out exclamation points) to the right of each of my email accounts. Even though I am able to receive/send, mail seems to think the connection is not working. When I click on the icon, it reads:
*There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account “(accountname)” or try again.*
*The server error encountered was: The attempt to read data from the server “(servername.com)” failed.*
The stupid thing about this is, it's connected, and I'm getting my mail. On occasion, one of the accounts will get grayed out and seemingly be not connected, but for the most part, I am able to send and receive mail fine.
All of my accounts are IMAP and I am using port 26 to send since my ISP blocks port 25, and I've been doing this with no problems for years...now all of a sudden it's become a problem.

I am having a very similar problem with Mail.app and four IMAP accounts, checking every minute.
I'm getting those little grey exclamation warning triangles and it's not consistent which one appears. Sometimes even two appear.
I can reliably send e-mail from a grey account, which automatically turns the warning off, but checking e-mail on an account that has gone grey doesn't work.
Connection doctor reliably shows green lights all the way. The only workaround I've found is to "Go offline" and then "Go online" ... this seems to temporarily clear the clog but it's not a real solution.
I've tried restarting, etc. but this issue hasn't gone away. Perhaps this is an issue that has cropped up in a recent update?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

They are not a supported carrier. You'll have to take it up with them.

My hdmi connection has sound but no picture. The desk top icons do not show up either. What is the fix?

I have a MacBook Pro and I was watching TV through an HDMI cable when the picture went away but I still heard sound. At the desk top I see the backgroud selected but non of my icons are on the TV screen. Please help.
