Deski: 2-tier & 3-tier mode

Hi,
We are setting up Business Objects XI R2 primarily for Desktop Intelligence.  We will not be using WEBI or InfoView.  All users will run their reports via DESKI.  However, the one thing I am puzzled about is the 2-tier and 3-tier mode.  From my understanding 2-tier mode consists of DESKI and business objects server and 3-tier consists when InfoView comes into play.  Is this correct?  I tried running a report in 2-tier mode, by logging into the business objects server, it failed with a u201Cconnection or sql sentence error: (da00005) u2013 unable to create connectionu201D.  However, after setting up 3-tier key, by logging into InfoView and selecting new > desktop intelligence document, it created a 3-tier file: @xir2dev_dotnet.extranet in the locdata folder and I was able to run the same report against the universe.
Am I missing something?  I thought you only need the 3-tier key only if you plan on using InfoView, is this correct?  If we need to create the key, we will need the users to log into InfoView for the first time.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Raja

Ok this may be easier if I list the requirements of each mode
full deski client install is required by both 3-tier and 2-tier
Connectivity to the CMS (6400 by default) and direct connectivity to the reporting DB(middleware installed on the client machines) is required by 2-tier
2 tier workflow
launch busobj.exe on client
system has CMS name in it and optional port#
login request is sent to CMS
to refresh reports (middleware must be set up locally on the client) such as SQL ODBC, Oracle, DB2, etc
Connectivity through a webserver (java:8080 or .net:80), connection server(service in the CCM/CMC that deski clients connect to) and DB connectivity(middleware installed on the server) set up on the enterprise server for 3-tier
3 tier workflow
launch busobj.exe on the client
system has globe icon and .net or j2ee (IIS or tomcat typically)
globe icon exists if .intranet file exists in C:\Documents and Settings\taz\My Documents\My Business Objects Documents\LocData on the client
file is created when preferences in infoview are set to launch desktop intelligence and a deski doc is accessed from infoview
file contains the URL of the .net or j2ee web server
Busobj.exe connects via web server (wsdkbridge or something like that) to the connection server running in the CCM/CMC
connection server works like the deski report server in querying DB for reports using middleware installed on teh enterprise server
data is returned to client busobj.exe
In your scenario it would seem that the reporting DB middleware is installed on the server only not the client (thus the Da00005 message).

Tim

  • Mid-tier, Infrastructure-tier - Same host or not

    I used to remember that on version 9i -> 9.0.2, if install the whole version, Oracle recommended to install mid-tier on one machine, and infrastructure tier on another machine. Does Oracle recommend that different hosts for mid tier and infra tier on 9.0.4 or on new release 10.1.2?
    It seems there are some advantages of install these two tiers on the same machine. but different Oracle homes.
    Please comment.

    Hello,
    I am having a problem on webi / deski with tier 3 connection mode.
    If i whant to create a new report, the list of univers ll be empty. When modifying a report, the only available univers will be those that are already used in one of the queries.
    When using direct connection to the databases, the whole list of univers is shown.
    I didn t make the original installation but wasn t able to reproduce the problem when installing a new server.
    This problem occured in SP2.7 and applying 6.3 didn t solve it.
    Does anyone have any leads ?

  • What tier goes where

    Hi,
    with a web (jsp) application, the tier architecture is simple:
    Database tier -> middle tier (webserver) -> client tier (webbrowser)
    But what about JClient apps.
    Database tier -> middle tier (bc4j) -> client tier (jclient) ?
    Where does code execute. If I use a viewobject to populate a JTree, does it 'run' on the middle tier (application server), or does it run on the client machine in the jclient application? What and where's exactly the separation between gui and middle tier?
    In a web environment, the browser is the 'thin' client, which knows only html. All business logic is performed on the server. Is the JClient situation comparable? Or is a jclient a much less thin client?

    As you're familiar, BC4J allows you to build J2EE-compliant apps with a clean, logical three-tier design. You can then choose to deploy your application as a physical two tier application, or a physical three-tier application as your needs require. These rules hold, regardless of the client implementation technology.
    Two concrete examples of a physical two-tier physical deployment are:
    [list=1]
    [*]JClient application talking to BC4J appmodule in local mode
    [*]JSP pages using BC4J datatags talking to BC4J appmodule in local mode
    [list]
    Two concrete examples of a physical three-tier deployment are:
    [list=1]
    [*]JClient application talking to BC4J appmodule deployed as an EJB Session Bean in a J2EE Container on another machine
    [*]JSP pages using BC4J datatags talking to BC4J appmodule deployed as an EJB Session Bean in a J2EE Container on another machine
    [list]
    Of course, the degenerate case of the last example above occurs when the JSP pages and the EJB Session Bean actually reside on the same J2EE container, then you can use the EJB Session Bean option of BC4J with local interfaces.
    Regardless of the UI layer you're using, your client works with the set of BC4J interfaces in the oracle.jbo.* package.
    What changes in the two deployment scenarios is the classes in the JBO framework that implement these common interfaces.
    [list]
    [*]In a physical two-tier deployment (also known as "local mode"), the interfaces are implemented by classes in the oracle.jbo.server.* package.
    [*]In a physical three-tier deployment, the interfaces are implemented by classes in the oracle.jbo.client.* package (and its oracle.jbo.client.remote.* "sub"-package.
    [list]
    This is transparent to your application code since you are working with the interfaces.
    When you use the remote mode, the bulk of the implementation stays on the EJB tier inside your session bean. What travels to the client are collections of value objects which are managed by a client-side value-object cache that BC4J implements for you (but which you do not need to manage yourself). If you are, say, browsing the results of a query that has scrolled through 1000 records, BC4J will keep a "window" of rows of value objects on the client for you, where the size of the window is set via the setRangeSize() method on the view object you're working with.
    BC4J is also designed to keep its client-side value object cache kept in sync with any changes that occur in the business objects in the middle tier. For example, say you have some business logic coded into your Employee business object that increases an employee's salary by $1000.00 when their job category goes up a level. And let's say your client is working with a view of the data that shows:
    Empno    Ename    Salary     JobClass
    1234     Ivo      4321         4If the client updates the value of "JobClass" from 4 to 5, the attribute change on the client-side value object eventually makes it to the middle tier -- immediately if you are using the SYNC_IMMEDIATE mode, and on the next row navigation, row validation, or custom method invocation in the case of our SYNC_LAZY mode. In the middle tier, BC4J syncs the change in the client-side value object "row" of this view object query result and sets the "JobClass" view row attribute in the middle tier. Since view objects cooperate with entity objects, the setting of the "JobClass" on the view object row internally delegates to an attempt to set the "JobClass" attribute on the underlying entity object instance representing employee #1234 (which was created in the EO cache as this row was queried in from the database). Your business logic in the setJobClass() method at the Employee entity level contains the logic that decides that, based on the increase in job class, the salary should get incremented by $1000, so it calls setSalary() like this:
      private static final Number ONE_THOUSAND = new Number(1000);
      public void setJobClass(Number value) {
        setAttributeInternal(JOBCLASS, value);
        // If new job class is greater than old job class, increase salary by $1000
        Number prevJobClass = (Number)getPostedAttribute(JOBCLASS);
        if (value.compareTo(prevJobClass) > 0) {
          setSalary(getSalary().add(ONE_THOUSAND));
      }Part of the functionality of BC4J's unique "Value Messenger" design pattern implementation is that the framework keeps track of the "side-effects" of any middle-tier activity and automatically returns any relevant changes to the client-side value object cache to keep it in sync in the same round-trip that caused the activity to occur. In this example, the client is looking at a value object with the "Salary" attribute for employee #1234 and this employee's Salary has changed as a result of having set the JobClass attribute.
    The net effect is that the user types in a new job class of 5 and tabs to a new field, and the updated salary of 5321 appears automatically.
    Empno    Ename    Salary     JobClass
    1234     Ivo      5321         5  <---------This attribute changed by the user
                         \_______<_______ The updated salary (increased by $1000) appearsThis works both in local mode or 3-tier mode for JClient, JSP, or any of our supported "View-Layer" technologies that bind to the standard BC4J client interfaces in oracle.jbo.*
    So, in short, a BC4J JClient app that's deployed as a 3-tier application is a thin client with a small cache of value objects for view objects with active iterators open on the client.
    Let me know if you have more questions on this subject.

  • Changing the port number in 10g Discoverer- Middle Tier & Infrasctructural

    Earlier I had insalled 10g discoverer which incudes both Middle Tier & Infrastructural Tier with default port numbers.
    Now i would like to change the default port numbers to other port numbers. This is because , i am got to do another discoverer installation with default port numers.
    In this case i have one question. Is it required to change all the port numbers that exist in the file "portlist.ini" of both Middle Tier & Infrastructural Tier.
    What change still i need to do in Oracle 11i application front.
    Thanks
    Naveen

    I did troubleshooting to verify the group, but this just changed the port number back to the default in the listener.ora & tnsnames.ora.
    So I did all the steps again to change the port number from the default to another - via lsnrctl status, i see that the new port number is being used, I can also log in to the database via Toad using the new port number, in v$parameter i see that the local_listener is registered on the new port number....only under the Fail Safe manager, the port number (under listener parameter) has not changed....it still shows the default port number. Anyone know how to change this???

  • How to install oracle applicatons in a three tier architecture

    Hi,
    i want to install oracle apps in a three tier architecture?
    application tier -- middle tier
    database tier -- database tier
    Any steps or a meta link document
    Regards
    Sudharshan

    Hi,
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B34956_01/current/acrobat/120oaig.pdf
    Pages 2-10 and Pages 2-19 don't specify this ???
    They indicate only having to install with rapidwiz 1 time (as root user if appl/ora accounts setup) ??It is mentioned in Page 1-2
    Release 12 utilizes the conf_<SID>.txt file in certain situations, for example where the database has not yet been created. The configuration file is also employed in multi-node (distributed) installs, where you only need to enter the install information once, on one machine, and can then copy the configuration file to other machines as required.
    If you are installing in an environment where different machines are used to support the database and Applications tiers (as is typically the case), you would run Rapid Install on each machine in turn, starting with the database machine.

  • Question about three-tier architecture for MI

    Hi,
    my question is just for the right understanding. If we speak about three-tier architecture of MI is it right, that the following is meant:
    Client = Presentation Tier
    Middleware = Application Tier/Logic Tier/Business Logic Tier
    Backend = Data Tier
    Thank you and regards,
    Florian

    Hi Florian,
    ICF (Internet Communication Framework) is actually a framework provided by any WebAS. MI makes use of this to receive/send the data from/to the client. It is referred to as ABAP Sync Service in MI terminology. Data comes in the form of HTTP stream. A service is created to provide this functionality. It performs the same job as of the J2EE engine in the earlier versions. The advantage being that an intermediate component between the client & middleware is not necessary anymore, because ICF is part of the WebAS itself.
    You can have a look at this in the sicf transaction, provide the service name as MJC, under this u can see that there are 3 services which MI uses - mi_host, mi_service & mi_mds.
    You can set these parameters in the mobileengine.config file to make the client connect to ABAP Sync Service.
    MobileEngine.Sync.Gateway.Service=/sap/bc/MJC/mi_host
    MI.Sync.ProtocolVersion=251500
    I am in the process of writing a blog, please wait for it.

    I'm currently setting up an environment where each tier is a separate machine on the local network. There is only 1 InDesign Server tier, but there are multiple client and middle tiers.
    The middle tiers (where the .indd files reside) can connect to the InDesign Server tier (via Corba).
    My question is whether there is a common way the InDesign Server tier can access the .indd files on the middle tiers?
    The most obvious solution seems to be via shared folders, but I was wondering if there is another, more flexible solution.
    Thanks in advance.
    Chris.

  • BI Publisher with Oracle e-Business Suite 11i in EBS security mode

    Seems I submitted below in wrong forums earlier so posing to correct one now. Appreciate any help.
    Hi All,
    I want to configure BI Publisher that comes as a part of OBIEE in Oracle E-Business Suite security mode. My Oracle E-Business Suite 11i runs on 3 node RAC database and 3 node apps tier/cm tier. As per configuration guide, I changed security mode in BIP to 'Oracle E-Business' and uploaded DBC file from E-business suite Web&Forms tier. In DBC file TWO_TASK parameter has value of test_806_BALANCE which is just an alias in tnsnames.ora for load balancing. Now when I go to BI publisher and click on 'Roles and Permission' tab in security center, it gives me 500 Internal server error.
    But if I change this TWO_TASK value to any particular RAC instance sid, I am able to see all responsibility in Roles and Permission tab. This seems that BI Publisher makes jdbc connection url to database on the fly by reading DB_HOST, dB_Port and TWO_TASK parametes from dbc file and due to this my BI Publisher is single point of failure if the RAC instance goes down which I mentioned in DBC file. Even though E-Business Suite is in HA, BI publisher is not taking advantage of this HA db.
    Any one has idea how to over come this situation.

    You can try for a luck by posting the thread in BI Publisher Section of this Forum..

  • WARNING - Oracle intends to desupport Forms client server mode

    When Forms 6i becomes desupported you will have to move to Forms 9i. Forms 9i runtime can only be run in web mode from a web browser. You will not be able to run client-server forms in native operating systems such as Windows or Unix. The forms will essentially run on the application server with Java applets to being sent to your web browser. Links to third party products will no longer work with host commands executing on your local machine. You will have to include Java code to make local commands work.
    The transition from Forms 6i client-server to Forms 9i web mode will be one of the most painful upgrades Oracle has ever inflicted on its customers.
    Essentially, Oracle is trying to palm us off with running forms from web browsers whether we or our customers like it or not. Java seems to be creeping in. I suspect Developer will eventually turn into JDeveloper, as they will not want to support two products. Easy one line statements and built-ins will be replaced by hundreds of lines of Java nonsense. Developer will move from a 4GL RAD environment to a cumbersome bloated 3GL Java environment.
    You can stop this happening if you want to keep you customers happy by:
    1. Sending Oracle enhancement requests to allow Forms 9i to run in native client-server mode.
    2. Complaining to your Oracle sales contact.
    3. Asking difficult questions at Oracle user groups.

    Duncan et al.,
    I've been wondering why exactly a Forms9i app. needs to run in a web page? Why could the applet not be deployed in a more "standalone" fashion, i.e., an independent application window. This would at least offer the appearance of a native application, complete with the new Java look-and-feel.
    If Oracle really wanted make their customers happy, they would then take the next step and come up with a way to embed OC4J into a client-side deployment executable, which would then effectively allow for a 2-tier client-server architecture.
    It seems to me that 2-tier/3-tier each have their place in the world, depending on the situation. In the extreme "2-tier" example would be an application that is to be deployed on a single client workstation. It would be hard to argue that a separate application server ought to be used. On the other extreme, anybody who has tried to manage the deployment--and upgrade--of a large number of Forms clients is very attracted to the prospect of only having to maintain and upgrade a few application servers.
    I agree with the direction of the product as far as replacing Toolkit2 and the native runtime with the JRE. The advantage of on-demand updating of application code is compelling. The capability of moving application logic to the middle tier is extremely useful. Platform independence is now done using the "universal" JRE instead of TK2.
    If the product could maintain the client-side processing capability--without resorting to Javabeans--it would be just that much stronger. As an application architect, I want to be able to design the application to allocate the work where it makes the most sense, either on the client, the application server, or the database server.
    How hard would it be to put this client-side processing capability back into the product?
