Deskjet 5740 won't scale to fit page; image off-center

I am using HP DJ 5740 over network via Airport Express. Driver is "HP5700 Series, v3.1.1" Neither of my Macs can correctly scale an oversized document to fit the page -- the command seems to be ignored, the preview picture never changes, the result is cropped off. The image looks off-center -- 7/8" on left, 1/8" on right, 5/8" on bottom (for page printed from Safari, ie no Word margins involved). And (for example) if I print a calendar month from iCal, the image is clipped on the left/bottom.
None of these symptoms occur when I print to the same printer from the Windows XP laptops on the same network. Ideas?

Another tack that you may think worth trying: define a custom paper size that’s actually the standard letter size in dimensions but has zero (or very small) margins: you can save it as "Letter Borderless" or something. Then choose that size for your page setup. This might help convince Preview (or whatever other app) not to crop the image.
What format is the scanned file in? What does Preview’s Get Info say about its dimensions? It may be that the headers specifying the sample density are missing or malformed, because in theory an actual-size scan should print at actual size without using a fit-to-page option. If you find you need to resize the image, try and do so without resampling (that is, just change the nominal resolution).

  • Excel file won't scale to fit page

    We have just installed a new copier, a Ricoh MP C4503, that repaced essentially an earlier version of the product.
    We have a user with an Excel for Mac 2011 xls file, that when he selected an area and printed with scale to fit, printed full page on 11 x 17. But now the spreadhseet comes out looking shrunk on the page, perhaps as thought it would look if printed fully on 8.5 x 11 but I'm just guessing.
    If I print this file on another Mac,with essentially the same OS (or several other versions of OSX on several other Macs we have in the office) using the same copier, it prints as desired, a beautiful fullpage 11x17 spreadsheet.
    It is only on his MBP (with latest updates I might add) that this problem is occurring, so I think it must be a problem with his OS, his printer driver, or his Excel installation, and I would remind, it printed fine before the new printer/copier came along.
    I have tried a barrage of possible solutions until I'm bleary-eyed: multiple tweaks of the settings in sys prefs, printer features, page setup, print area, deleting and reinstalling driver, and more.
    Help?

    Wrong place to ask perhaps?

  • Firefox 4 won't let me save any image off the internet (works fine with IE)

    Ok...Firefox 4 won't let me save any image off the internet. It will let me right click on the image, but I won't let me choose a file type..like jpeg.
    I couldn't figure it out so i completely uninstalled firefox then reinstalled. I'm still having the same problems.
    I can save images normally with IE.

  • My iTunes page is off center

    My iTunes page is off to the left on my screen and I can't get it centered so I can view the entire page. Does anyone know how I can get the entire page centered on my screen? I have Windows Vista.

    You can't drag the window to the center of the screen?
    It's something with Vista or your computer, not iTunes.
    Change the screen resolution.

  • Jpeg image won't scale to fit box. Any ideas?

    I am trying to add text to my scanned watercolor illustrations for a childrens book I wrote.  I am using Illustrator and I just loaded a jpeg image into illustrator, and it is HUGE!  I tried to use the scale tool and I can't figure out how to get the jpeg image to shrink down to fit in the box!  All I get is a blue snowflake and also a menu w/ choice of uniform or nonuniform for the scale.  Don't understand.  This is totally confusing!  I am using CS3.  Any ideas?

    What are the physical dimensions of the jpeg?
    Open it in Photoshop and check Image Size in inches or centimetres.
    If you want to make it smaller, increase the resolution (ppi) without resampling.

  • New message page always off center???

    When I open a new email page in Mail it puts the page off to the left by about an inch, it means that I have to move the window back into the center for each new email. I can' find a way to stop this or at least minimize the amount that it moves the window so that I can still see the side drawer. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

    Windows should open up as they were last closed. Try moving the window to where you want it to open, and clicking the red button in the upper left hand corner to close the window. Next time you open a message in a new window, it should open up in the same location, and at the same size of, the window you just closed.

  • When I seek to open Firefox it triggers a UAC prompt which may or may not be a spoof, and when I cancel the prompt my home-page loads off-center.

    I recently updated to Firefox 3.6 but a prompt told me to update my Adobe Flash Player. I tried a few times to follow the directions, but nothing matched or seemed to be happening. Then, a pop-up was on my desktop the next day which I thought was the next step or a step I missed. The pop-up said a newer version of Adobe Flash was available. Somehow I may have sought to download the offer, then canceled. For several days there was no problems. All was fine until ZA scared me into buying an offer which did not work well for me so I went back to what I had before I bought then returned their product. When I log on to the computer now and click the Firefox icon to go to the internet browser, the UAC prompt asks me to give Administrator permission to Adobe DLM to download a file "C:/Users/my name/AppData/Roa.../getPlusPlus_Adobe_reg.exe" This did not happen before I started changing my firewall and anti-virus provider back and forth. How can I eliminate the UAC prompt? Should I simply give Administrator permission and download the file? If it is legit, should I keep the file on my computer; and will I find there is an easy way getting it off? At the moment I am using AVG 9.0, the Windows Vista firewall is on, and I have a router. The odd thing about all this; I checked my programs I am able to uninstall and there I see is Adobe Flash Player 10 in the list of programs I have which was installed months before all this happened. If I already had the newest Adobe Flash Player, why would Firefox 3.6 tell me to update my Adobe Flash Player? More to the point, what is the best way to deal with this annoyance: The other user on this computer has no problem like my UAC prompt blocking immediate internet connection through Firefox.

    There has been a security update of the Flash Player and the current version is 10.1 r85 , so you are two versions behind (previous was 10.1 r82).

  • Off-center page possible?

    Is it possible to create a web site in iWeb where the main part of the page is off-center?
    (example - www.starbucks.com)
    All of the templates automatically put the page in the center of the browser window, and I don't even know if it's possible to change that. If anyone knows anything about this, I'd appreciate the advice.

    Changing the alignment of a page is easy!
    Publish iWeb site then open /Sitename/PageName.html in Text Edit. A few lines down in the code right after the <body> tag there are two <div> tags that look like this:
    <div style="text-align: center; ">
    <div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-top: 0px; overflow: hidden; position: relative; word-wrap: break-word; text-align: left; width: XXXpx; " id="body_content">
    Change the tags so they look like this.  Edit style parameters to taste.
    <div style="margin:left(or right); margin-left(or right):XXXpx">
    <div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; overflow: hidden; position: relative; word-wrap: break-word; text-align: left; width: XXXpx; " id="body_content">

  • HP Deskjet 5740 Printer acts like it's printing, but blank pages come out.

    I have an HP Deskjet 5740 printer. It has worked until recently and now when I try to print it won't out of any applications. It acts like it's printing, but pages come out blank. When I do a test it works or when I try on my work mac it works as well. So I know it's not a printer problem or USB cord. I have tried to reinstall the driver and also to "repair disk permissions," but to no avail. Thanks for your help!

    Take out one of the cartridges and make sure you pulled off the tape covering the head and pin hole. I haven't dealt with Epson printers for a while but I remember buying cartridges for one of my printers that the tape always seemed to peel off leaving the hole plugged.
    If this isn't the problem then it boils down to two things: bad cartridges or printer problems. Different printers are susceptible to two different problems; dried ink in the ink lines and air bubbles. You can try cleaning again and again, using the power cleaning mode if Epson offers that. This wastes ink but you have little choice if you want to resurrect the printer. If this doesn't work try returning the cartridges for a refund and see if that works.
    Three simple rules tend to keep inkjet printer problems at bay: print something at least once a week. This will keep the ink from drying out. When the printer tells you ink has run out get a new cartridge. This will reduce the chances of getting an air bubble in the line. Buy ink only from reputable vendors and don't fill your own.

  • Are Adobe EVER going to make Edge Animate scale-to-fit (like Flash)?

    I've been following the progress of Edge Animate (formerly Edge) ever since Steve Jobs decided he wasn't having Flash on the iPad.
    With each new version I've been desperately looking for the feature that I consider the most important of all: Scale-to-fit
    There are a couple of discussions already on this forum where people have requested this feature - but both have been sidetracked by replies from people who haven't understood what 'scale-to-fit' is. So let me explain Scale-to-fit:
    I'm talking about the feature in Flash - where if the HTML dimensions are set to 'Percent' - then the resultant movie will scale-to-fit any browser window. Here is an example of what I mean:
    http://www.skippingschool.co.uk
    - try changing the browser size and you'll see the whole frame (graphics and images) scales without changing its proportions.
    When the latest version of Edge Animate came out with its built-in easy-to-follow 'Resize' Lesson, I thought Adobe had finally found an answer. But good though this feature is, it doesn't solve the problem. It's only possible to properly scale-to-fit images - not graphics.
    It's now more important than ever that Adobe finds a solution to this problem. The world is going 'Responsive' - its not just a fad. And 'Responsive' is not just about three columns being squeezed into one. All Responsive sites require images, graphics AND animations to scale-to-fit. So Adobe's tutorial showing how Edge Animate can be added to WordPress sites is of limited use because it won't work for Responsive web sites.
    So please Adobe, will someone tell me if scale-to-fit is EVER going to happen? I don't mind if it's 3 months, 6 months, 9 months down the line - but I need to know if it's worth me sticking with Edge Animate - or whether I should be looking toward HTML5 Canvas or something else for a solution?
    Alternatively, is there some fundamental reason why it can NEVER happen?
    Please tell me? Just put me out of my misery!

    Hi Sarah,
    I hope you don't mind but I played around with your code a bit and managed to get the kind of scale-to-fit behavior that I believe the OP was asking about.  I think the trick is to make sure that you also check whether the scaled height of the stage exceeds the height of the browser window and change the scaling so that it is responsive to changes in both the width and height of the window, whichever is the limiting factor. The code I changed in CompositionReady appears in bold below.  I hope this helps.
    sym.$("#Stage").css({ // Set the transform origin so we always scale to the top left corner of the stage
    "transform-origin":"0 0",
    "-ms-transform-origin":"0 0",
    "-webkit-transform-origin":"0 0",
    "-moz-transform-origin":"0 0",
    "-o-transform-origin":"0 0"
    function scaleStage() {
        var stage = sym.$('Stage'); // Set a reusable variable to reference the stage
        var parent = sym.$('Stage').parent(); // Set a reusable variable to reference the parent container of the stage
        var parentWidth = stage.parent().width(); // Get the parent of the stage width
        var parentHeight = $(window).height(); // Get the browser window height
        var stageWidth = stage.width(); // Get the stage width
        var stageHeight = stage.height(); // Get the stage height
        var desiredWidth = Math.round(parentWidth * 1); // Set the new width of the stage as it scales
        var desiredHeight = Math.round(parentHeight * 1); // Set the new height of the stage as it scales
        var rescaleWidth = (desiredWidth / stageWidth); // Set a variable to calculate the new width of the stage as it scales
        var rescaleHeight = (desiredHeight / stageHeight); // Set a variable to calculate the new height of the stage as it scales
        var rescale = rescaleWidth;
        if (stageHeight * rescale > desiredHeight) // Do not scale larger than the height of the browser window
                        rescale = rescaleHeight;
    // Rescale the stage!
               stage.css('transform', 'scale(' + rescale + ')');
         stage.css(  '-o-transform', 'scale(' + rescale + ')');
               stage.css('-ms-transform', 'scale(' + rescale + ')');
         stage.css('-webkit-transform', 'scale(' + rescale + ')');
               stage.css('-moz-transform', 'scale(' + rescale + ')');
         stage.css('-o-transform', 'scale(' + rescale + ')');
               parent.height(stageHeight * rescale); // Reset the height of the parent container so the objects below it will reflow as the height adjusts
    // Make it happen when the browser resizes
    $(window).on('resize', function(){
               scaleStage();
    // Make it happen when the page first loads
    $(document).ready(function(){
        scaleStage();

  • Report generation doesn't scale to fit

    The layout option, "Scale front panel to fit" in "Easy Print VI Panel or Documentation.vi" (in the report generation pallette) doesn't do anything.  In fact, if I dig into that vi, it goes through to "Report Gen VI or Documentation.vi", and I find that the  layout option isn't wired to anything!  Is this a known problem with that vi?
    My application requires that I print the front panel as part of a user log, and I need to be able to scale to fit in order to squeeze it onto the page.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Charlie

    Hi Charlie,
    The layout option is not wired to anything in the Standard, HTML, Excel and Word Report, but it is used in the Quick Print default case.  The Help document for this VI mentions that the layout option is ignored on Standard and HTML Reports but does not mention the Excel or Word Reports.
    This was discovered a little while ago in this discussion forum.  And a report has be filed to R&D by Ben.

  • Set "Scale To Fit Media" as default in Photoshop CS6 print settings on OSX

    Quite frequently my boss will email 10 to 30 images to me to print from his camera. Is there a way to setup Photoshop CS6 print settings so that "Scale To Fit Media" is the default. I tried to create an action and then through Bridge select a folder and Batch send the files to Open-Print-Close. Since images are never received 8.5"x11" it would be convenient to have this as a default. Since the print settings revert, or aren't defaulting to "settings last used", my batch attempt was unsuccessful. I know I could edit my action to adjust image size to page dimensions, but thought a way to edit the Print settings default must be out there somewhere. (Using MacBook Pro OSX 10.8.4) Any Suggestions?

    Unfortunately "Scale to Fit Media" isn't a toggle. But let's try a workaround.
    You can create an Image Size action where you will scale the picture to either 8.5 inches wide or 11 inches high, whichever works best for you. First be sure "resampling" is turned off under Image > Image Size.
    You would open an iimage, then create an new action, title it "Letter 11 inches" and that's when the recording starts.
    Enter 11 inches as the Height, click OK and then stop recording.
    This is a quick and dirty action and assumes all pictures are portrait and not landscape. It may just work for you.
    You should be able to include it in your batch processing.

  • HP Deskjet 5740 Drivers, Windows 8.1

    Hello,
    I have had this printer working on XP for years.
    I have purchased a new PC with Windows 8.1, it Works there.
    I can install on XP and share with 8.1 but that is back asswards, The win 8.1 will be my main PC.
    I have it installed on 8.1 and would like to share it with the XP machine.
    When I try to add the printer on XP I get a message:
    The server does not have the proper HP5700 series installed.
    I have downloaded and installed 8,1 64 bit, OK.
    Cannot use install disk from years ago.
    I believe that I need to install 32 bit drivers on Win 8.1 to share with XP.
    I am lost, I cannot find any thing online, just sites trying to install all kinds of garbage.
    Is there an install from HP that will allow me to share 8.2 64 bit to the XP 32 bit?
    Thanks,

    Hey there @Raney , Welcome to the Forums!
    I noticed your post about wanting to share your Deskjet 5740 from your Windows 8.1 to your XP machine. As you have found in your research, this just won't work. There are no drivers available at all for this model of printer and Windows 8.1 (check here). The old disks will not work as they're not compatible with Windows 8.1.
    You will most likely have to stick with the "backwards" way unless you look into upgrading your printer.
    I hope that helps clear up the situation for you.
