Deskjet 6540 false carriage stall

My Deskjet is flashing the power and resume buttons. I've tried everything in support online and still, they flash! There is nothing stuck in the printer. The print carriage had stalled on the left end of the printer, but I just gently pushed it the rest of the way to the end of the line and that allowed it to get back to the proper right-hand side of the printer alignment. But, still the lights flash. The toner light is not on, so I don't think it needs toner, but I don't know for sure. I've restarted the computer, the printer, taken out the toner cartirdges >carefully< held both buttons in, held one button in one at a time...?
Help!

@ MMG635 - To add to the video provided above, there is also a document for this issue located here.
If the steps do not resolve the issue, then you may want to replace this unit because it has developed a hardware problem. If you are still in warranty, HP may replace the printer at no cost to you. I'll link the information to get in touch with them below. The link will take you to a form to fill out. Once you fill it out and it is processed, it will give you the printers warranty information, a case number, and the phone number to call.

Printer wont print a single page and it displays the error msg,it completely depends on printer's mood when it wants to print, yes it makes some unusual sounds too.I have updated to latest version of SOLUTION CENTRE and have tried cleaning the rollers by opening the rear door of printer.
I have WinXp Sp2 and i think i have performed all the steps available on internet....Please Help!

    Thank you for clarifying.
I would suggest following these steps prior trying a clean boot:
    1. Open Mcafee software, from the Virus and Spyware Protection section click on Schedule and run scans. Click on Real time scanning and then on Turn Off. select till I restart the PC and confirm by clicking the Turn Off button.
    2. Open the run dialog by clicking both the Windows key and the R key on your keyboard. Type %windir% and click on OK.
    3. Type hpoins*.dat into the top search bar, if there are any results rename the extention into old instead of dat. (e.g. hpoins1.old)
    4. Type hpwins*.dat into the top search bar, if there are any results rename the extention into old instead of dat. (e.g. hpwins1.old)
    5. Launch the Run dialog by clicking both the Windows key and the R key on your keyboard. Type MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER into the Run dialog and click on OK.
    6. Launch the Run dialog by clicking both the Windows key and the R key on your keyboard. Type MSIEXEC /REGSERVER into the Run dialog and click on OK.
    7. Run the installation file and check for any difference.
If the issue persists, open the device manager and expend the Processors section.

  • 'Ink Cartridge Carriage Stalled' - Repeated Error Message

DeskJet 2050 All-In-One J510C. Serial CN07N2B3CF. FPU CH350 or 355,  -64001 Having just run HP Print & Scan Doctor!I still keep getting this message. It must be erroneous, because when I click "OK" it rattles and whirrs and then carries on as normal, with a quality print. BTW:- searched Support numerous times with NO RELEVANT results, hence this post. How do I resolve "Ink Cartridge Carriage Stalled" ?  (Previously, downloading & updating software chased it away. So I did that yesterday, again!) Please advise your correction to this irritation.Thanx.

    NEW info!
computer still says yellow ink is out...print with Black only option and I'm able to print regularly from another computer tied to the same printer.
But just now I attempted to print a picture.  The screen said the yellow ink was out and would I like to print using Black only?  I clicked Black (just to get something) and the device printed a color picture.  Thanks but what's up?

  • HP Deskjet 6540 drivers for Windows 7

We have recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7.  We have followed all of the instructions on disconnecting and reconnecting the usb cables and trying to let Windows 7 detect and install the drivers but no success.  We tried installing the Windows updates and that did not solve the problem either.  Finally, we went into the devices & printers and add printer, and select HP but there are no drivers for the 6500 series.  We even inserted the Windows 7 disk and clicked on "HAVE DISK" and tried to find it on the Windows 7 but nothing.  Has any gotten this to install correctly or is there somewhere I can just download the drivers for this printer for Windows 7?

I am having a really hard time with my printer since I started using my new laptop with WIN7. Its frustrating to say the least. HP Deskjet 6540 is such classical printer with the highest ink efficiency so far but if HP can't resolve this single crisis, the I'm ashamed they've lost one customer.
What exactly is the issue you are having?  Did you install the Windows Update driver as I described above?   Running the driver install wazard at http://www.hp.com/go/tools may help resolve the issue.

  • How can I get my HP DeskJet 6540 to recognize the new ink cartridges I installed?

Hi everyone. I have an HP DeskJet 6540 printer and I replaced the ink cartridges. After I replaced the cartridges, I aligned them and then did a test print. I noticed that the blank ink didn't print. I opened system preferences, and then I opened the printer utility. It says, "Device Status : Pen Failure." Current Supplies Levels says, "The current levels for the selected printer are shown below...Cartridge on the left (tri-color 97) is unknown and the the cartridge on the right (black 96) is missing." Oh, I forgot to mention that the print cartridge light on the left side is flashing. I went to the HP support website and it says that the problem could be an incorrect print cartridge, incompatible print cartridge, or problem with the (left/right) print cartridge.  The solution they offered was to remove, inspect and reseat the problem cartidge. It also said to clean the problem cartridge contacts. I did that and it still gives me the same results. I even reset the printer but still got the same results...
So the next thing I try is the OTHER cartridges listed as compatible with my printer which is 94 (black) and 95 (tri-color). I bought the new cartridges, placed them in the printer and I still got the same message from the print utility. I took the latter cartridges back and got a refund and explained that none of the compatible cartridges are working with my printer. I kept the 96 and 97 cartridges in the printer and the light on the left continues to flash so now I'm here asking if anyone knows how I can get my printer to recognize the new ink cartridges I installed?  Are there any other solutions that I have besides throwing the printer out of the window? :-)
    Thanks everyone ;-)

With all that you have done it does sound like the printer has a fault. If you haven't tried turning off the printer for several minutes, then this would be worth trying (maybe you have done this when you say reset the printer?).
If the cartridge light on the printer flashes when you turn the printer back on then it sounds like a hardware fault - not the driver or the operating system. And this is not usually something a user can resolve so it would need repair. And for the cost of a new printer, why would you bother.
If you plan of sticking with HP and getting another model that can use the 96 & 97 cartridges (let's face it, they often cost more than the new printer), then take the two existing cartridges to the store and see if they will let you check they are okay. No point throwing them out also if they still have a fair bit of ink still in them.

  • Windows 7 Drivers Needed for Deskjet 6540

    Hello,
We use 2 Deskjet 6540's @ my office. I have the windows 7 RC, and cannot get it to load drivers for the printers. I download the vista driver, and it says This driver is not for windows 7.and does not give me a "so what" option.
    any help would be appreciated.
    Keith

As of today Sept 16, 2011 the printer drivers from windows 7 work. It still requires some effort.
    1) let the printer install (if it is already and the following steps do not work remove the device and let it reinstall)
    2) right click on the printer in "Devices and Printers"
    3) select "Printer Properties"
    4) go to the "Device Setting" tab in the top row in the middle
    5) under "installable options" click after the duplexer options and select "installed" from the drop down menu
    6) click "OK"
I take no responsibility it this does not work for you, it work for me on Window 7 SP1

  • Officejet H470 carriage stalled

On screen message says "carriage stalled".  Green 'power on' light is flashing, as is the orange/red error light.  Both ink cartridge lights are on.  When I open the cover the ink cartridges usually move to the center, but not this time.  Turned it off and unplugged, then back on several times - nothing.  I manually slid the cartridges to the center and then to the other side and back - they did not appear to be stuck- then tried it all again.  They still wouldn't move on their own.  Getting the flashlight out and slowly moving cartridges to center again I noticed what appears to be something looking like a twist tie laying under where the cartridges slide (on the right side).  Upon closer examination I can see one just like it on the left side under what appears to be a gear.  How did the one on the right side come undone and where do I put it to make this thing work right, or is this not the problem.   There is a small door on the bottom of the printer on the right side, but when I open it I can see the gear but no clue where this 'twist tie' goes.  HELP!!!
    Thanks

    Hi cr180,
    1) For the LED blinking, perhaps this link can answer your query on what is it and how to resolve.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01182351&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&ju...
    2) For the twist tie you mentioned, on the left side is it brown color, whilst the one on the right is black color (but to the extreme right)?
    3) For the bottom cover on the right which you open, it is actually for your to replace the ink service module.
(Look out for this "Issue: The Resume light is on or blinks, the Right Cartridge light blinks, and the Power light is on" on the below mentioned link)

  • HP Deskjet 6540 networked on XP, problems accessing from Leopard

This is a strange one. I have a Deskjet 6540, if I connect it directly to my Mac using USB it is recognised beautifully, complete with a nice icon.
However, this printer is usually connected to my Windows machine, I can browse to the Windows printer share in System Preferences Print & Fax without any problems.
The printer isn't recognised though so I have to select 'Select a driver to use...' in the 'Print Using' list.
This would be great if the Deskjet 6540 or 6500 was listed, but it's not in the list. I know the driver is on my Mac because it works perfectly when connected directly via USB, but I need to share this printer from Windows.
I've also tried selecting 'Other' and then manually browsing through /Library/Printers/hp without any luck.
This worked in Tiger but using the Foomatic drivers. This is a clean isntall of Leopard so none of the original installation remains.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards.

You guys are under the mistaken impression that a driver is a driver is a driver. But on OS X, that isn't so. There are two types of driver, Carbon and CUPS. A CUPS driver (including all postscript printer drivers) is required to use the standard network printing protocols like IP printing and Windows Printing. But HP doesn't provide CUPS drivers for their non-postcript printers. They provide Carbon drivers, which means the driver only works for the comm protocol that THEY programmed into it. HP drivers for USB printers are limited to USB.
Apple included Gutenprint drivers (which are CUPS drivers) on OS X because they know abut this issue. If your printer isn't supported by Gutenprint, you can look into other CUPS drivers here:
    http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/macosx
This issue has been covered hundreds of times here. Find more by searching for "CUPS network."

I am trying to install an HP Black Print Cartridge No 96 in the right slot but my Deskjet 6540 printer will not recognize or update properly. What could be the problem?

Aligning the cartridges ensures high-quality output, The HP All-in-One prompts you to align the cartridges every time you install a new cartridge. I am sorry there is no way to turn that feature off.

  • Carriage Stalled on Photosmart C309a

Message starts with "Paper Jam" on front display of printer. Cannot find any paper where it does not belong. The next message appears on the computer: "Carriage stall. The print cartridge cradle cannot move."
The carriage is stuck on the right side, not accessible because it is parked under a permanent plastic "house." All the troubleshooting tips mention the carriage must move. Yes, but how do I make it move without forcing it and breaking something?
There was a post last month, someone had the same problem and managed to resolve it without explaining how.
The printer worked beautifully UNTIL I received a three-page fax. That carriage parked and never moved again. Have not been able to use the machine since then.
    Any assistance is appreciated.
    Thank you

Hi - Go ahead and try the steps in this document.  It sounds like you may have performed a few of the steps, but it also talks about re-installing the printhead assembly and performing a printer reset.
If the steps in this document don't resolve the issue, you'll want to contact support to see if they have any additional suggestions, and if they don't they can also help you get the printer serviced.
    Hope that helps.

  • Carriage Stall

My Hp 6310 printer is working OK but I keep receiving an error message re: carriage jam.  I have done everything on the HP support site to correct the problem.  I can print a self-test page and finally was able to align the cartridges.  In the past the cartridges moved when I lifted the cover; not now.  The HP printer utility says "carriage stall" for status.  Any ideas would be most appreciated.  Thanks.

I don't mean for you to repeat steps you've already been told, but just to make sure all the steps have been followed, here's a video explaining how to fix recurring carriage jams. Have you already tried all these steps?
