Deskjet 6940 black ink smearing on page sometime after cartridge change

The ink started smearing on the printed page, not immediately after I changed the ink cartridge, but after around 50 sheets.  Some sheets have faint lines perpendicular to the printed lines as if ink were on the rollers.
I opened up the printer and wiped excess ink off the bottom of the gray cables and off the stainless rod running across the interior.
Anyone have any thoughts?
With thanks

  • How do I setup my printer to print with only black ink in a pages document

How do I setup a document to use black ink only in Pages?

This is a Printer setting, rather than a Document one.
For my Canon Inkjet, it's done in the Print Dialogue:
As you can see from the second pop-up menu, I have saved this setting as a preset.
The setting itself has only a single change from the supplied "Standard" setting—checking the Grayscale Printing checkbox.
Going by appearances, the printer uses only the Black cartridge when printing in this mode, unless I have set "Use color cartridge" in the printer's utility software, a setting intended to allow you to print using only one cartridge when the other is out of ink. Greyscale printing using only the colour cartridge has less contrast, and usually shows a colour cast. Setting the printer utility to specify using only the K cartridge shows results essentially the same as those done in grayscale using the Print dialogue setting and not bothering to change the printer utility setting.

  • Black ink smears on printing

I have an HP Officejet J6450 that uses 74 & 75 ink cartridges.  I purchased it in March of 2009.
I began to get black ink smears on anything I printed so, I followed all of the suggestions regarding cleaning....
I put in a new black cartridge but  the problem continued to the point that I was ready to throw the printer away.  Eventually, as I was trying to load paper last night, it kept rejecting the paper, indicating that it was the wrong size or type.  Finally a piece of paper jammed in the printer.   As I was removing the paper jam, I saw a small caterpillar size brush in the paper jam.  When I removed the paper, the brush came with it.  The small brush had a sticky side to it and it was covered with black ink.  I have to presume that this is the brush that cleans the ink cartridge head.  It was smearing all of my printing until it dislodged.  I have no idea where it goes nor do I want to put it back in place only for it to dislodge again.
Now, the printer works fine but I don't have a brush in place to clean the ink cartridges.  A disappointed user.  My next printer will probably be another brand and another set of ink cartridges......

Ironically the small brush is one that is designed to wipe fibers (paper fibers, pet hair, etc.) from the carriage to prevent ink smearing.  Removing the brush will not have any adverse effects for normal printing.  It at some point in the future the ink smearing returns you can manually clean the bottom of the carriage and print cartridges as shown here.

  • Photo Paper Black Ink Smearing When Dry

I have a continuous problem with the ink easily smearing when I print with this paper, and check B&W in the print box. I am using a HP 8500 printer with HP 940XL inks. No matter how many days they dry, they smear and the ink lifts off. But, if I print the same with color settings (a b&w photo), the inks don't smear when dry. But the color cast to the old b&w photos is unattractive, not to mention a waste of color ink.
Why is this and how can it be avoided?

I have had the same problem with an HP Pro 8000.I selected Hp Premium Presentation Paper, Matte because I could not get the printer to print with black ink only with any photo paper!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was printing on HP Advanced Photo Paper Glossy and getting acceptable results UNTLL I ran out of black ink.  After I installed a new 940XL Black cartridge ink could easily be rubbed off the prints when they were dry.  I was still printing on paper from the same box.   I have also discovered that when printing on HP Premium Photo Paper Glossy the ink will not rub off when it is dry!!!!  The premium Photo Paper is several years old.  I seleccted HP Premium Presentation Paper, Matte when printing on the old photo paper again to be able to print with black ink only.  The tint that results from printing without using black is almost impossible to correct back to a true black & White. Why did one cartridge work and the next one smear??????????????

  • Black Ink smearing

Hi, I have an Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless, and I have the exact same problem as many, many other users who have written in about their printers (whether or not the same model).
I have worked with HP Tech Support via both chat and phone, and we did all sorts of cleaning processes, but the black ink continues to smear (even after the photos are 30 days old), and also on brochure and invitation paper.  While I realize everyone wants us to use HP paper, it is not always available in the size and type we want for our print jobs.  It is not at all acceptable that HP mandates use of their paper.  Frankly, the Kodak paper I use is superior, and about 2x the cost of comparable HP paper.  Black ink did NOT smear with my older HP Photosmart all-in-one, so WHY does it smear with the new Officejet?  (BTW, I was talked into trading up by one of the tech support genies last October).
Has anyone addressed the question as to whether or not there is a problem with the black ink itself? I cannot be possible that all of us have the same problem and that the ink has not been suspect.  The HP chat tech with whom I spoke did not answer the question when I posed it to him.
Am waiting for a manager to call me back - and I really don't want a refurbished printer to replace the one that is only 4 months old. Not really fair, is it?
    -Tink

    Hello Tink333,
The problem that is happening most likely is indeed a wrong choice of paper. While Kodak surely is an A grade paper, i might not be compatable with your printer. Its most likely a high grade photo paper suited for dye based inks which photoprinters use (best inks for pictures) . The unit you are currently having is using pigment based inkt (better for documents) which is meant as a document printer but can also print pictures if the paper is suitable for pigment based inkt. That is why most likely most tech support will advice HP paper, because of the simple fact that they now which HP paper is suited for that ink. If you want to use kodak paper that is fine off course but then i would suggest contacting kodak to find out which of their papers is suited for pigment based inkts. Hope you find what you are looking for.

  • HP Photosmart 6520: Black ink is not printing evening after installing all new ink cartidges

    Good evening,
Printer has been working great since I've bought it.  I replaced the black ink cartridge today because my daughter remarked that blank pages was printing ... no word doc.
Tonight I tried to print and no black ink, neither from the Printer function nor the Copy function.
Just to make sure that this wasn't a bad black ink cartridge, I went out and bought and installed all the ink cartridges and still no black ink,.
I have run the software - Clean Printheads, both steps, twice (after waiting an hour inbetween the first and second series.)
I have verified that the in flows from the cartridge.
I have verified that the vent hole on the cartridge is open.
    The warranty ended on 12-31-2013.
The only time I see black ink (words) is when I print the PRINT QUALITY DIAGNOSTIC report.
Printhead removal does not appear to be user available.  Any suggestions - other than buy a new one?
    Gunz

    Hello afcosta355,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are running into some print quality issues on your HP Photosmart 6520, you are unable to print in black ink after replacing the cartridge.
I would like you to continue here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, I understand you may have done some of these steps already but I need you to complete all steps in order to resolve the missing black issue you are experiencing.
Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages. Complete all three stages if necessary. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last (third) cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again.
If you are still unable to print in black ink, I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. Please let me know which Country/Region you are in as well as the product Warranty status: HP Warranty Checker
I hope to hear from you soon.
    Thanks,

  • Deskjet 6940 series ink cartridges

Why can't I use HP96 and 97 ink cartridges instead of the 344 and 339 that came with the 6940 deskjet?

Hi, the 344 & 339 cartridges are for Europe.
If you need to get your printer's region reset to accept US cartridges, you'll need to contact phone support.
FYI, the link here for Cartridge Compatibility may be of use Determining Ink Cartridge Compatibility.

  • New black cartriges, very poor page output, new cartridge, won't print black

Purchased 3 pack of XL black (not color) cartridges. First one had very low page output, just died in the middle of ink showing available. Next cartridge had wiggle down the page. Some print would be jogged with the font. Vertical lines looked like bricks jogged. Next cartridge had wiggle but ran till out of ink, almost normal output, new single purchase of cartridge replaced. Went dry this AM purchased another one within an hour and there is no output period from this one.
Very VERY expensive to operate, very low output. Three pack was wasted $'s, threw more than 1/2 away.

The document here has troubleshooting steps that may help resolve black not printing on your Photosmart c309.  Be sure to check the vents, if they are blocked the supply will only give about 20-30% of the ink before it fades out when printing.  If the above does not resolve the problem the post here may help.

  • Photosmart premium 3-all-in-one printer won't print black ink

My hp photosmart 3-all-in-one C310 series does not print black ink on the page.  The cartridge is new, and all of the ink cartridges are full.  The printer is 3 years old, just one month out of warranty.  I have downloaded all the latest updates, I'm pretty sure, and have gone to the troubleshooting page on the hp web site.  I have followed all the directions, twice, and still no black print.  Please help, I do not want to buy a new printer!
    This question was solved.

Under Tools, I only see "Clean cartridges" not "Clean printhead."
When I selected "Clean cartridges" twice, the black ink printed!  Hooray! Once I post this, I hope get back to the page to say the problem is "Solved"!
Oh, while I have you on-the-line, while the cartridges were being cleaned, I got a message saying that I had to download the newest hp drivers, since the ones I have are not compatible with this version of Windows.  However, I did download the latest drivers for 8.1 from your web site when I had a horrible paper jam.  After I downloaded the newer drivers, that problem was fixed.  But, since I am getting this message re incompatibility, do I have to download again?  It was only a couple of weeks ago (three at the most) that I downloaded the drivers.
    Thank you again!

  • Smearing Black Ink

Help - I tried to work with HP through 9 e-mails.  I cleaned and cleaned the printer and the ink cartridges. I replaced the black ink cartridge three times. My documents still smear. The color cartridge does not smear - only the black ink smears. I have a Officejet J6480-All-in-One printer and it is only 3 months old. Does anyone have any other suggestions.  Slicker.

How did you remove that brush?  It's located in an inaccessible spot. - hope removing this works for me as well as it worked for you!
The brush actaully does serve a purpose.  If it is misplaced I would start by trying to position it back in place ratherr than removing it....
(The brush is meant to keep stray fibers sich as paper fibers or pet hair from building up on the printhead causing ink smearing.)

  • HP 5550 Excess Black Ink Issue

    Hi,
I have an imac G5 running OSX 10.4 and an HP deskjet 5550 printer connected via USB that has started to basically put too much black ink on the page after changing cartridges so prints now smudge really badly. I thought the new cartridge was faulty so I changed it for another one but the same thing still happens. I think it might be a printer set up or driver issue as I have played with all the settings and it just about works if I choose draft print quality. The colours print fine as does printing when using a photo colour cartridge in place of the black ink one. I did a print recently on best quality so I was wondering if it was related to that? Also what driver or settings should I be using? Thanks for any ideas or advice as I'm fairly new to macs.

The brackets on the ink levels page are actually printed with a combination of color inks, they will print in what looks black even if black is not working.  I would suggest the troubleshooting steps in this document.  Be sure to check the vents.  If this does not resolve the issue the post here may help.

  • Officejet 6500 - suddenly won't print black ink

I have an OfficeJet 6500.  It used to work just fine, but all of a sudden, the black ink is not working.  I checked that there was ink in the cartridge (there was), and I even replaced the cartridge with a new one.  I did a print test page, and the colors are working, but no black ink.  I tried rebooting, reinstalling drivers, plugging directly into wall outlet, but still no luck.  Sometimes, I can see very faint black ink on  the page, but it is definitely unusable like this.  Anyone have any ideas on what to do?
I am on Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit.  There weren't any changes made to the computer right before this problem started.

You need to get a new printhead

  • Ink Smearing on 8610

I have an almost brand new 8610 and the black ink is smearing down the left hand side of the paper.  I have cleaned the printheads, calibrated the linefeed, removed and reinstalled the cartridges, checked to make sure I am using the right quality paper and none of these things has worked.  It is almost as if there is something dragging through the ink but I can't determine what it is or how to fix it.  Does anyone have a suggestion?

    Hello @jrmarcels,
I would like to assist you today with resolving the black ink smearing issue that you're experiencing when printing from your Windows 7 computer to your HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer. Thank you for including all of the troubleshooting steps you have attempted prior to reaching out for support. Issues like this are normally caused by a defective cartridge or a defective Printhead system. The Printhead is the part that the cartridges fit into. It controls 'reading' the cartridges and putting ink on the page. If the Printhead is defective than the print system within your HP Officejet would be defective and a replacement Printhead would be needed. With that being said, I am going to have you print a standalone Quality Diagnostics Report to verify if the quality defect shows on this. From there I will also have you check the paper path on your machine to ensure that no debris or paper is in the paper path that could be causing the smearing ink issue. Can I please have you follow the steps below.
How to Print a Quality Report:
Load plain white paper into the tray.
On the printer control panel, swipe the display to scroll to Setup, and then touch the Setup icon (). The Setup menu displays.
Swipe the display to scroll to Print Reports, and then touch Print Reports.
Touch Print Quality Report. The printer prints a test page.
If this report prints perfectly: Than the ink smearing issue that you're experiencing is not being caused by your printer. Rather, there is a setting or driver conflict occuring on your computer that is creating this quality issue. To ensure that your driver is functioning properly can I please have you click here to download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool. This Tool will 'fix printing' issues on your computer. Should any driver, software, or connection conflicts be found than the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool will attempt to resolve those conflicts for you. Once the Tool has completed, please test printing again.
If this report prints with quality issues: Than this issue is being caused by your print system. Please click here to access the print quality troubleshooting steps. Because you have already run through the recommended quality troubleshooting steps before reaching out for support, simply take a look through the Solutions offered in this document to ensure that nothing has been missed. Once you confirm that all steps have been completed, please click here to access the paper jam troubleshooting steps. I would like you to run through Solution two, Solution three, and Solution four. Once the paper path has been checked and cleaned, please try printing again. Should the smearing issue persist, a replacement black cartridge would need to be tried. If the issue persists with a new black cartridge than the issue lies with the Printhead and a replacement Printhead would be needed.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • Officejet 4500 will not print black ink

Our small office has had an Officejet 4500 for a few months now with no problems. Today it has ceased printing any black ink.
-I have changed the cartridge to be sure, though at no point has it said low ink. This fixed the problem for a few pages but the problem popped back up. I did align the cartridges after installing the new cartridge.
-I have tried cleaning the contacts on the cartridge itself.
-The scanning function still functions and color ink can be printed.
-Overall printing does seem slower, regardless of the black ink issue. Not sure if related.
-The all in one has been used more frequently in the past few weeks.
    This question was solved.
