Deskjet 6940-print quality

I am having a terrible time with print quality.
And, ink cartridge is new.
The characters being printed are not clear.  The
top of the character is fine but the bottom of the
character does not print.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Greg

Clean the cartridge contacts as shown in solution two here.

  • Trying to network my hp deskjet 6940 printer via a new win 7 64 pc. the printer shows as "offline"

I am trying to network my hp deskjet 6940 printer via a new win 7 64 pc.  The printer is visible but shows as "offline" and will not respond.
Can the  hp deskjet 6940 printer operate over a lan using a win 7 64 pc?
    Thanks!

    Borneodiver,
Since the site says the driver is already in Windows 7, then a different method of adding the printer will need to be performed to get the driver from Windows Update.
First, uninstall the printer from the Windows 7 system.
    1.  go to devices and printers and select Add Printer at the top.
    2.  Select Add a local printer.
    3.  Create a new port with port type Local Port.
    4.  The port name will indicate where the printer is located.  The format will be \\<computer name>\<printer share name>.  Leave out the < > symbols.  For me, this would be \\mycomputer\printer.
    5.  The next screen will show a list of various printers.  Click the Windows Update button to update the list to the most current.
    6.  Select your model printer from the list.
The rest of the prompts should continue from there without any issue.  I do not have a photosmart 7760 to get the rest of the prompts from there, but it should work after these steps are completed on the Windows 7 system.
If the printer was added using the network option, then it won't work on Windows 7 and there won't be an option for the driver since a network driver doesn't really exist for the printer since it is not natively networked.
Selecting the network option is usually selected in this process and it appears to not work with printers that are shared from a computer.  This process tricks the Windows 7 system into running the printer as if it was actually connected to the printer, but the port name directs it to the host computer.
    Let me know what happens.
I did find these steps here in jimbo45's post.  I did perform the steps with a different computer and printer successfully, but it should work in this scenario as well.

  • HP Deskjet 6940 Printing problems

    Hello,
I have recently purchased a HP Deskjet 6940 which I have owned for only 1 week. Problem is that when I try to print digital photos or just high definition pictures, even pictures from a digital camera, the printer seems to crap out on printing the photos. The quality is horrible the resolution is disturbing. Basically the printer doesnt print the pictures on par with what I expect it to. The lines are all over the paper the colors don't match, its weird. Normal pages I can print but when it comes to photos the printer just doesnt do the job. Any suggestions on what is wrong with my printer, for I do know something is definitely wrong with the printer because it does have the capability to print photos neatly and accurately. Thanks.

  • Why is my Deskjet 6940 printing mirror image ?

The printout on my Deskjet 6940 is very clear and concise but it is in mirror image, you have to hold it up to the light and read it from the other side. What am I doing wrong? Maljal76

What operating system? In Windows 7 there is a checkbox in the "Finishing" tab for "Mirror Image", make sure you uncheck this box.  I would expect similar options in other drivers.

  • Deskjet 4480 - Print Quality is Poor

The print is not uniform.  Part of it is fine but then a letter or two will be faint or incomplete.  It acts like my old printer did when inkjets needed cleaning.  Is there a way to do this?  The ink cartridge is fairly new and worked fine until recent;ly.

Actually, you can get to it from the Print Booklet dialog. I'm on Windows, but it should be similar on Mac.
In the Print Booklet dialog, click the Print Setup button to open the printer dialog (looks just like the regular ID print dialog, because it is). Presumably you've already selectred Adobe PDF as the printer. Click the setup button in this dialog, and then the preferences button in the next one. You'll see the settings for the PDF Printer Driver. Top dropdown is labeled "Default Settings" and is probably set to "Standard," which is what you want to change.
I'd recommend going into the PDF printer properties through the Windows Printers folder, or through the Mac printer utility, and change the default there, too. Pick something you would use most of the time, and then you won't have to reset it every time you print to PDF. "Standard" is a low-res, convert to RGB settings file.

  • Deskjet 6940 connected via ethernet cable to Airport, will not print

    Hello,
I used to run my HP Deskjet 6940 printer using a USB connection. I recently installed an Apple Airport Extreme so I can print wirelessly. As required, the printer is now connected to the Airport using an ethernet cable, and the green network light is on. On the advice of an HP rep via telephone, I uninstalled all older HP software and reinstalled HP software downloaded from the HP website.
When I try to add the printer on my "System Preferences," it opens a panel that contains the following options:
Protocol: Automatically chooses "line printer daemon--LPD"
Address: Blank but allows me type in the assigned IP address
    Print using: No idea.
Two more things: when I open HP device manager, and select 'configure a networked printer, all network confirguation info appears fine but the manager does not allow me  to "apply" it.  Not sure if this is important but no printer utilities show up in my utlities folder since the new software download. Thanks.

It looks like you are running a Mac.
First of all, the driver for the Deskjet 6940 is built into the Mac OS.  You really didn't need to download extra stuff from www.hp.com (sorry about the bad advice).
Next, let's verify that the printer is on the network.  From Safari, select Bookmarks, Show All Bookmarks.  Select Bonjour from the left hand pane and verify that the Deskjet 6940 appears on the list of devices found on your network.
Next, follow these instructions to reset the Mac printing subsystem:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1341
Now add the printer from the Print & Fax applet under System Preferences by pressing the [+] button.  The Deskjet 6940 should be listed as one of the Bonjour kind of printers.  Select it and then press Add.
I think that should do it.

  • How to align deskjet 6940 in windows 7 using windows std drivers

I have a deskjet 6940 printer installed in Windows 7 64 bit using the standard Win 7 drivers and it works fine The issue is what about aligning the printer? If you get new cartridges, the first thing you do is align the printer. Win 7 drivers do not do this. When can we get something to be able to align the printer under Win 7?
    Thanks,
    Vic

AFAIK the Deskjet 6940 performs an automatic alignment when a new cartridge is installed.  The printer will print an alignment page and scan it automatically while printing to complete the alignment process without any user intervention required.
I think you can also force an alignment as follows:  turn on the printer, then press and hold the power button and while pressing the power button press the resume button (to the right of the X button) three times, then release the power button.  (This works for the Deskjet 6550 and other models, I think it applies to the 6940 as well.)

  • Deskjet 6940 duplex

I have a 6940 deskjet connected to my LAN via ethernet with the optional a duplex unit to allow automatic duplex printing.  All worked well until I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate and now the dulpex unit is no longer recognised.

Step One of those directions (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01909142) is fine and I have enabled duplex option, but there is no FEATURES tab in Printing Preferences (Win 7 64-bit). Can't find Paper Saving Options > Automatic/Two-Sided Printing anywhere in Printer Properties, Printing Preferences or Properties rt-click menu. What am I missing???
There are a few possibilities:  go to the Devices and Printers folder, right click on the Deskjet 6940, Printer Properties, Printing Shortcuts, then select Two Sided (Duplex) Printing, Apply.  Alternately you could select the "Finishing" tab and select Print on Both Sides with Use auto duplex unit.

  • I have HP Deskjet 3510 connected wireless - problem is that it wants to print only black and white - is there a color button I am missing?  The print quality report is fine in color etc.

I have a HP Deskjet 3510 and it wants to print only in black and white.
The Print Quality Report is fine and in color.
Is there a color button I am missing?

In the Print & Scan system preferences, does it indicate it is using a generic printer driver or a Gutenprint driver?
Also, if you click on Options & Supplies, you might want to check and see if has to be enabled. That kind of sounds odd though.
Another thing is it might not be showing. If the bottom of the print dialog has a button that says "Show Details," click it. Then, you can change settings in the popup menu.

  • New Deskjet 3520 - print has changed to draft quality now I have changed connectivity of printer

    Hi,
Hope that you can help me
I have a new Deskjet3520 printer. It was working well via USB connection and I was happy with the prints that came from it
I have now connected now via wireless connection.
The system did all the hard work and I was very impressed with how easy it was.
However, I now have a problem, I have printed off a sheet of text that is all black text with the email address part in blue. The prints are coming out as if in draft format - pale grey with the blue portion coming out pale pink!
I haven't changed any settings, just trying to print off text.
Just tried it agin and now thgere are just faint markings on the page
I have checked the setup and it is definately set for colour printing and NOT for draft
I only purchased the printer late December and it has HP inks
    Can anyone help me please?

It sounds like the Deskjet 3520 has developed a print quality issue.  It doesn't appear that the printer has begun using a draft mode, but instead has most likely gotten some ink dried up in the ports of the printhead for the unit.
Have you tried running the Clean Printhead utility in the Setup menu of the printer?
Follow these steps to run an automatic utility to clean the printhead.
Load letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the paper tray.
On the product control panel, press the Down Arrow ( ) to select Settings , and then press OK .
Press the Down Arrow ( ) to select Tools , and then press OK .
Press the Down Arrow ( ) to select Clean Printhead , and then press OK . The product cleans the printhead, and then prints a test page.
I would advise running 3 levels of the clean printhead utility.  Also try performing an ink system reset to this unit.  It may have some ink on the electrical contacts causing the printer to not communicate properly with the cartridges.  For information on how to perform an ink system reset click here.
As well, there are additional steps for a print quality issue found here.  Let me know how it goes.

  • My Deskjet 6940 is having problems pulling paper into the printer

Have had a HP Deskjet 6940 for about 2-4 years.  Has worked great the entire time.  Today in the middle of a print job, my printer freaked out and the ink cartridges inside moved quickly from side to side  for a bit  and now when I try to print, my printer sounds like the ink cartridges are moving into position and it sounds like the printer is going to work properly, but then I get an error that there is no paper in the printer.
Have tried resetting the printer, have turned it on and off many times, have even uninstalled the printer and reinstalled it.  Have also cleaned the paper rollers in the back of the printer and made sure that there is not too much paper in the printer/the paper is in good condition (no tears, etc.).
Any suggestions on what to do next?  Maybe it is time to get a new printer?  Because I have had it for a couple of years, getting it serviced would probably cost as much as or more than the printer itself is worth.
    Thanks!

Sounds like you have done some of the steps in this document, but have a look it might help.

  • Hp Deskjet Ink Advantage 2060 All-in-One K110 series Bad Print Quality

Hi! I am an avid fan of Hp printers since I was a kid. It is the family's most trusted brand for printers. Our printer worked just fine until I printed a colored page. When printing an all black page, the print is ok. For the colored output, the picture has some shadow/3D effect in it that I can't understand. It makes the picture unrecognizable. I tried troubleshooting but doesn't work. I am using Windows 8 and have been searching the net for solutions and etc but could not find one.  I wanted to print an alignment page, clean the cartridges and stuff but could not find the Solution Center just like in Windows 7. Please help me. I badly need it. I have an important document that needs to be printed. My future depends on this one, literally. So please help me. I am begging you. T_T

Hello I_Am_Lost,  Welcome to the HP Forums.  I see that you are having an issue when attempting to print due to bad print quality. I do have a few suggestions that we can try in the attempt to resolve this issue. First off, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. I have also located a troubleshooting document that deals with HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 2060 (K110a) All-in-One Printer - Troubleshooting Print Quality Issues. If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest contacting HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. , : click here.  Thanks for your time.  Cheers,

  • Deskjet 6940 not printing PFD's

I have one of the above attached directly to the PC via USB cable, the PC is winXP Business SP3.
When I try to print out a PDF document the printer makes a noise, I can see the job Spooling(then this disapears very quickly) then nothing.  After this attempt, when I get a print job out(not PDF) I get a blank page before the printed job.
All else is fine.  Could it be a Postscript problem?  I have the latest drivers installed, the properties ofthe PDF doc show me that it is avaliable to be printed, but just no job comes out.

    tamm421 wrote:
I cannot get my HP Deskjet 6940 to print. It will print out a test page, but not a file such as Word, or PDF. Any ideas?
Did you install through software update this week, the HP Printer Drivers v.2.11 for OS X? In the text file, /var/log/cups/error_log, is there any helpful information about failed prints?
Have your deleted your printer from preferences and reinstalled it? The 6940 series is still supported.
I would create an arbitrary folder name, let's call it HPprefs. With the Finder, navigate to your ~/Library/Preferences folder and look for the printer preferences that contain something like these ... yours may be different for the 6940.
    com.apple.print.custompresets.forprinter.hplaser.plist
    com.hp.print.psdriver.pde.plist
    com.hp.printerutility.plist
Highlight them and from a right button, choose copy these files. Then within the HPprefs folder, hold down the option key and choose move items here.
Now remove your printer from Print & Fax preference pane and set it up again. Try printing from Word or Preview again.
