Deskjet 960c printer assistant

Hi Guys
I am using my old Deskjet 960c with my Windows 7 desktop until I run out of ink cartridges
I have the drivers in order to print from Windows 7 but can not use the original installation disc to install the desktop icon Printer Assistant
HP website no longer supports this printer and I just wonder if anyone has any ideas as to whether I can use another software utility to access the printer settings, ink use etc on my 64-bit Windows 7 computer?
Thanks
jackieh2009

Jackieh2009,
I am sorry you are having an issue with your HP printer assistant.
Printer assistant is actually only available for newer HP printers. The only driver that is able to be installed is a windows OS driver. The problem with this is it's a basic driver and doesn't have the functionality to show the ink levels.
I hope this answered your question.

The Printer Assistant Software that came with the Deskjet does not work with Windows Vista.  It previously enabled me to view how much ink was in my cartridges.  Any suggestions on how to tell the ink level?

Hi - This isn't an ideal solution since it doesn't show you how much ink is remaining, but it will identify a cartridge that is low on ink.

  • HP deskjet 3070A - 'Printer Assistant' gone missing

Since using printer to photocopy, the option to access the Printer Assistant has disapeared from the menu  when accessing the device via the control panel on networked devices.
The other 3 options 'See What's Printing', 'Set Preferences' & 'Customise Your Printer' remain as before.
Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling (3 times) with laptop restart before re-installing with CD - but no effect.
Tried disconnecting router, turning off laptop, turning on printer then re-starting Laptop... no better.
Laptop running Windows 7, 64 bit.
Also have separately lost ability to use wirelessly - although worked fine for first few months.

Hi DSBVIC and welcome to the HP forums!
You have an Officejet 8500A that no longer has the scan options in the HP Printer Assistant? I'd be happy to help you resolve that issue!
I will recommend that you download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor. Once it reaches the end, after running either Fix Printing or Fix Scanning, you will see a screen similar to the picture below. I'd recommend selecting the Uninstall/Reinstall option and your issue should be resolved.
Let me know how that goes for you

  • HP deskjet 960c printer stair-step printing problem

Hi there, my printer used to work beautifully. Now when it prints it I get a stair-step effect. ie it starts OK, then the image moves up by a millimeter, then another millimeter etc etc. It's very annoying. It does it no matter what I print, text, images, pdfs...
Can anyone throw any light on this, and what I might do to correct it? I'm on a G4 quicksilver using os x 10.3.9. Printer driver is up to date as far as I know.
    TA!

    Kathykate,
    We're still reading--
Ooooh these printers, I could scream!
I can be very frustrating at times. Especially when you have intermittent problems.
First, I switched the usb cables around, and that
    didn't make a difference.
It was a thought. We can pretty much rule out a bad USB cable now.
    Then I installed the
gutenprint drivers. They printed out my images in a
not very clear kind of pointalist dots type way, my
type was no longer clear, and the colours were not as
good as before and anyway, it still stair-stepped so
    I uninstalled them.
Interesting that the printing is "pointalist". My old HP 870 also uses the PCL 3 driver from Gutenprint. Text is great. I really don't use that printer for images, however. I have noticed a blue shift in the tones. The fact that the printer is still stair-stepping with these drivers would point to the printer malfunctioning. Especially as I look back over the previous posts and noticed that the stair-stepping seems to have increased in displacement.
But I noticed something in the
gutenprint set up where it talked about respooling
your printer? Basically you had to go into file
sharing and click printers to file share and this
    reset something.
I don't recall seeing that. Do you recall what part of the documentation that was in?
Did 4 prints and no stair-stepping!
Thought I'd cracked it! Of course the next one
stair-stepped... Have also tried the usb cable
directly into the back of the computer (it's normally
    plugged into a belkin hub).
So that one is completely unsolved, still random
    stair-stepping.
All indications seem to point to this being a hardware issue with the printer. The only other test I can think of is to try it on another computer. A Windows box would be a good choice. I know the option of trying things on a different computer is not always possible. I just hate to condemn a printer to the trash heap until all possible avenues have been explored.
My big 1125c is also still a 'mare. When it prints,
it's great, no stair-stepping. But my mac keeps
    losing the connection to it.
Again, the frustration of a sometimes problem. I don't have any good advice here. We have seen this type of problem before and there doesn't seem to be any one thing that helps in all cases. I have three printers. My Epson SC 800 which is connected via a parallel to USB adapter has this problem. I have not found a solution for it. My other 2 printers never skip a beat.
Haven't yet run Apple Hardward Test disk (think I
have it somewhere) although tried the Printer Setup
Repair mentioned and that hasn't seemed to help.
I would still recommend that you give this a go. There still could be a problematic USB port on your computer that is causing some of the problem.
PS Have today posted another question about something
in terminal saying 1 thing is stuck, see below,

  • HP Printer Assistant Software Missing Scan Option on DeskJet 2542

I have installed the Printer Assistant Software on both an HP Desktop and a Lenovo Laptop.  I have two HP DeskJet 2542 Printers in two different physical loactions that I connect to with the Laptop.  On the Desktop computer the install of the software has a SCAN function Button that launches a SCAN mode where I can scan files to PDF, etc.  That option does not appear on the Laptop.  I have re-installed the software on the Laptop and still cannot get that function.  Why?  Makes no sense that it woud install and show up on the Descktop computer, but not the laptop.  Is it because the Desktop is HP and the laptop is Lenovo?  How can I get the SCAN button and functionality in the Printer Assitant software on the Laptop???

  • Hp deskjet 960c won't print multiple pages

I am using Mac OS 10.5.8 with a hp deskjet 960c. Over the past few weeks the printer no longer prints documents with multiple pages from Preview or Excel. It will print the first page from these two programs but stops there. It still prints multiple page documents from Word and Acrobat Reader. I have no issues when using a different printer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer multiple times. Any ideas?

Same problem with HP6940. USB connection.
    Also reinstalled drivers.
HP4050N has no problems on network.

  • Noisy printer deskjet 960c

I have a deskjet 960c it squeaks loudly the entire time it is printing. Are their any suggestions as to what to do?

If the squeak occurs as the carriage moves back and forth you may be able to address it as follows:  turn on the printer and open the lid so the carriage moves to the center.  Now unplug the power.  Next gently move the carriage to one side and clean the carriage rod (the ~1/2" stainless steel rod the carriage moves on) with a damp lint free tissue.  Next move the carriage to the other side and clean the other part of the rod.  Plug the printer back in, turn it on and close the lid.  Print something - is the issue resolved?
If not then open the lid and after the carriage moves to the center pull the power plug again.  Now put one drop (no more!) of a light oil such as as 3-in-1 oil or sewing machine oil on each side of the carriage on the carriage rod.  Gently mode the carriage back and forth a few times to distribute the oil.  Now close the printer, plug it back in and test.
Do not put more than a drop of oil on each side as excess oil can attract paper fibers or other debris and cause issues.

  • HP Deskjet 1000 Printer - J110a cannot print in color using WIndows 8

J110a cannot print in color using WIndows 8. The printer will only print in black and white even though it works fine on a PC with Windows 7. I installed the latest drivers from the HP web-site.

    Hey @KC1964,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that since installing your HP Deskjet 1000 Printer on your Windows 8 computer you have not been able to print in colour. Because you are able to print fine from a Windows 7 computer we know that this issue is not being caused by your printer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. I'm thinking that your machine is  either experiencing a driver conflict or a setting issue within the Windows 8 computer. Please follow the steps below.
    Step 1: Check Settings:
Open your Start screen by selecting the Windows button on the bottom left hand corner of your computer screen or by selecting the Windows key on the bottom left of your keyboard, to the right of the Ctrl button
Once the Start screen opens type Devices and Printers
    Click on Devices and Printers
In the Devices and Printers folder right click on your HP Deskjet
    Select Printing Preferences
In the Preferences window select the Advanced button on the bottom right
Look for the Greyscale or Print Black Only and make sure they are disabled
If all settings are correct, yet the issue persists, please proceed to the next step.
    Step 2: Try Alternate Driver:
To confirm if this issue is specific to the Deskjet 1000 driver I am going to have you load an alternate driver on your machine.
Open your Start screen by selecting the Windows button on the bottom left hand corner of your computer screen or by selecting the Windows key on the bottom left of your keyboard, to the right of the Ctrl button
Once the Start screen opens type Devices and Printers
In the Devices and Printers folder right click on your Deskjet 1000 and left click on Printer Properties
Left click on the Advanced tab
    Left click on New Driver
When the New Driver window opens just hit 'next' until you see a list of Manufacturers on the left and a list of Printers on the right.
Select HP as the Manufacturer on the left
Select Deskjet 9800 as the printer on the right. If Deskjet 9800 doesn't appear than select 'Windows Update' on the bottom left and once the update completes you will be able to select Deskjet 9800.
After selecting Deskjet 9800 hit next to complete the New Driver Wizard
Under the Printer Properties window select 'Apply' but don't hit OK
    Select the General tab
Rename your printer back to HP Deskjet 1000
    Hit OK
Lastly, right click on your Deskjet 1000 one more time and left click on Printing Preferences
Left click on the Paper/Quality tab
Left click on the 'Normal' dropdown for Print Quality on the bottom right and change this to Fast Normal
    Click Apply and OK
Now that the new driver is added in, please test printing in colour again.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Good luck!

  • Can´t find HP Printer Assistant

    HP Deskjet 1050A J410 with Win 8.1
Have tried numerous suggestions from various sources but I cannot get Printer Assistant to open. I cannot even find it on my computer eg .exe file.
Have deleted HP software and re-installed with different combinations , eg full package, basic software only etc as per suggestions but no joy.
Does Printer Assistant have a particular file name/path for win 8.1 so I can search for it ?
If not , any suggestions on how to completely remove any ref to HP so I can start from scratch ?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanx.

    Hi Alinspain,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue with locating the Printer Assistant.
I do have a few steps that we can try in the attempt to troubleshoot the issue.
First off, please remove the USB cable from the printer and from the computer and leave it off.
One very important step with the printer is, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
The next step would be Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Once the software has been removed, please make sure to restart the computer.
When the computer is back up and running, please click on the following link for the HP Deskjet Full Feature Software and Drivers.
Please do not connect the usb cable.  The installation will prompt you when to do so.
Once the printer has been reinstalled, check for the Printer Assistant.  If you are still having issues, please click on the following link for the HP Update Software Utility.
Please feel free to write back if you have any other questions or concerns.
