Desktop acting like Disk Image?

I am having some very strange issues with my Mac right now. Whenever I try to move something from the desktop to the trash can, I get a warning saying the item will be permenantly deleted immediately. This is before I empty the trash. I am also having some issues when I try to update Adium or 1Password or a couple other programs I get a weird error:
Update Error!
1Password does not have permission to write to the application's directory! Are you running off a disk image? If not, ask your system administrator for help.
I know I have Admin rights, I have repaired disk permissions, I don't really know what to do next. I get some weird things when I do the Repair Permissions though. It says:
ACL found but not expected "Applications/Utilities"
ACL found but not expected "Applications"
ACL found but not expected "Library"
Thanks for your help.

Just an update on what I have done:
Did an archive and install at the recommendation of apple support and that didn't fix it.
After that they recommended I delete the user and then restore all the settings and everything from the disk image that is created. This actually fixed the problem, but now it turns out that the permissions on all the files are screwed up. Here is a picture of what it looks like.
http://skitch.com/adamteece/ghfc/permissions-issues
We tried to fix them, and I fixed a lot of the permissions but you have to go through file by file to change it. We tried resetting permissions from the leopard disk, repair permissions from disk utility, but nothing seemed to work. It is usable for now, but there are still issues here and there. I hope Apple will fix it. I am not the only one having this permissions problem now, here is a thread describing it better.

  • CS2 uninstall, mac desktop screen acting like photoshop image

Recently my creative suite on my mac stopped updating showing an error, so each time now when updates arrive I cannot update. Now my 20" intel macs desktop image acts like a photoshop image?
The desktop starts up and then expands beyond the screen, by nearly 2", when the cursor is moved accross the screen the desktop image moves too, it is making its way to see the unseen edge which appears as cursor moves towards that edge, (eg from centre move cursor to right screen image moves left). This is quite a sea-sick effect. Also if you click and drag on the desktop it forms a box, like the one in photoshop. Something seems corrupted. I want to uninstall the creative suite then reinstall (this should help the updates) but I do not know if the screen on my mac will correct.
I looked up how to uninstall and the first thing is to double click on the Activity Monitor in Utilities and select AHCRemind.
I double click on the Activity Monitor and the window I get up does not show AHCRemind? I cannot proceed. Can anyone help, has anyone had the same problem with the desktop?

I have managed to cure the screen moving but I still need to uninstall CS2 (creative suite 2) and reinstall. I have an intel mac 10.4 os running tiger. As I said before I cannot find the 1st step on the instruction, perhaps the instruction is pre tiger, or Leopard system? Please help.

  • Full browser window placeholder that acts like background image fill?

I want to be able to set full browser window placeholder that acts like the background image fill function, but be able to then build in a multi-anchored horizontal parallax.  The effect is like we have a background image fill, but can slide horizontally between pages as if they are in a slide show.  Simultaneously, content inside the placeholder such as longer paragraphs of text can scroll down - on top of the image layer, but inside the borders of the image placeholder.  For a clear example of this, see this website: http://argonautinc.com/
I've read and searched but to no avail.  I'm only about one week into Muse, so please forgive me if this is  super simple!   Thanks, Nico

    Hi Nico_Cineaste,
You can achieve the design by using Fullscreen Slideshow in MUSE as object.
Open any page in MUSE , click on the "Object" >> Slideshow >> Fullscreen.
Click on your blank web page.
This will give you a full screen slideshow.
You can now design as per your requirement.
    Thanks

  • When I enter full screen for a game or video using Firefox the whole "screen" moves to the left, leaving a white space on the right side of my monitor, but the mouse still acts like the image is where it should be, why?

I have the latest Firefix update, and I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. It's annoying, specifically for games because I have to make sure the cursor is to the right (by a certain amount) of the item I wish to click. This issue is only in Firefox, I have tried in Internet Explorer *shudder* and there is no problem, I do not have any web browsers currently installed.

  • Inconsistencies between sidebar and desktop for disk images

    Hi;
I'm tweaking my settings to keep just those things visible that I want to have visible, and I have noticed that a mounted disk image is treated differently by different parts of Finder Prefs. In the General tab of Finder Prefs, I make a mounted disk image appear on the desktop (or not) but checking/unchecking the External disks checkbox. So the desktop treats a disk image as an external disk, not a hard disk.
However, in the Sidebar tab of the Finder prefs, a mounted Disk Image is treated as a Hard disk, not an external disk.
Can anyone shed any light on why this should be?

On my system, both the General & Sidebar tabs fail to display mounted disk images only if the "CDs, DVD's, & iPods" box is not checked. Weird, but at least it is consistent.

  • Disk images will not mount

Error message keeps popping up saying something like "disk image not configured" or something, even from sites like mozilla.
I recently took the HD out of my old iBook G4 and put it into a Powerbook, because the battery wouldn't charge on the iBook and the Powerbook had a corrupted HD.
I had also cleaned out a lot of adobe folders the other day sitting around in my library because I didn't think I needed them, and so that might have to do with why disk images aren't mounting on my computer.
So are there any files that I might have deleted on accident that prevents disk images from mounting on my computer?
I'm positive I've got the disk image mounter utility because it comes up in the monitor, but I really need some help with this one.

    Hi datz;
In addition to Neville's suggestion, I would suggest that you repair your disk while booted from the install media for your Mac.
The reason I am suggesting this is that when you run disk space low as you have you greatly increase the chances for file corruption. If you don't repair this file corruption it can lead to all kinds of strange problems in the future.

  • Application disk image won't eject off the desktop?

    Hi,
Lately I've been having this problem with either Firefox or Safari and I download something and the dmg extracts and I'm left with the white casing shell where the app is housed and it won't eject. I can't eject it from finder but dumping it to the trash from finder took it off the sidebar. I can't get them off my desktop unless I restart my Mac.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it? I'm using Leopard 10.5.2.
    S.

Thanks to DeltaMac I figured out all the problems I was having with my Finder. I was missing a lot of options under my Finder tab like Empty Trash, Preferences, Quit etc. Also I had no option to right click and eject disk images or external hard drives.
All you have to do is download Onyx here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20070
Then open up Onyx and go to OnyX/Parameters/Finder
put a check in the box next to Show Preferences item, Show Empty Trash, Show Quit item, and Show Eject item and whatever else you want. You have to do them each individually though and wait for the prompt. Then item log out and back in again and everything should be back to normal.

  • Big mistake...renamed disk image on desktop...

Yup. I just can't leave well enough alone. I set up time capsule with little trouble and it ran for 3 weeks. Then, like a jerk, I renamed this little disk image on my desktop. Couldn't remember it being there before...so I just renamed it and tried to throw it away!
    BIG MISTAKE.
Now time machine says it failed and is now unable to mount the backup.
So I just "entered the time machine" and then exited. No big deal.
    BUT...
After that, any attempt to backup leads to a total crash requiring a restart.
Is anybody as dumb as me? Without admitting dumbness, is anybody willing to offer a solution? or should I just start all over again?
    Bill

Now any time I try to back up, or merely access TC, I get the total, dimmed-screen system crash. SOMEBODY HELP!!!!!!!

  • Disk image on desktop

What does it mean, and what did I do wrong, if every time I click on a program, it mounts to the desktop like it did when I first installed it, thereby leaving the image on the desktop until I eject it?

    Jargra,
A Disk Image is like a "virtual disk" contained in a single file. This is the "disk image file." When the file is opened, the "volume" it represents is mounted on your Desktop just like a physical disk. Once mounted, it behaves like a physical disk.
Many OS X applications come in disk images. You are supposed to either 1) run the installer that is stored in the disk image, or 2) drag the application that is stored in the disk image to your "Applications" folder.
I think your confusion comes from the idea that dragging the application, still located in the disk image, to your Dock will "install" it. In fact, all this does is create a shortcut to the application that is still located in the disk image.
Mount the disk image on your Desktop. Open it up, and find the application that is stored there. Open your hard drive, then open the "Applications" folder. Drag the application from the disk image to the "Applications" folder. You can now eject the disk image, find the disk image file, drag it to the trash and empty it. Once you have done this, drag the current icon for that application out of your Dock. Locate the copy of the application that is now in your "Applications" folder and drag it to your Dock.

  • FV Home Directory behaves like regular Disk Image

Yesterday I needed to shutdown the computer via Terminal, since logout was blocked by Finder (although it wasn't running according to the Dock).
Since then, my FV-encrypted Home Directory is displayed like any other Disk Image:
    - The home icon is replaced by a regular disk image icon in the Finder sidebar
    - Eject button next to home folder in the Finder sidebar (doesn't work when clicked, says the disk is in use)
    - No more automatic special icons for the folders (Documents, Movies etc)
Login works, and I can access all my data as it was before, but I don't think this behaves as intented. No external devices were/are connected except the network cable. I didn't find anything interesting in the Console logs, but I don't know what to search for.

I noticed that "Desktop" is no longer my desktop (files moved there don't show up on the desktop). "Goto, ~" opens the Desktop folders parent, my FV disk image, though.

  • CDs, DVDs, disk images won't appear in Sidebar or on Desktop

    Hello,
Brand new iMac 2.16, right out of the box.
CDs, DVDs, and Disk Images won't appear on the desktop or in the Sidebar. Nothing is shown over the horizontal gray line at the top of the sidebar, no Macintosh HD, Servers, etc. Disk Images are fully functional, ie Disk Utility recognizes and mounts them just fine.
I checked Mac Help and followed its instructions:
    (1) In Finder preferences:Pane:General, all 'Show These Items on the Desktop' boxes are checked.
    (2) In Finder preferences:Pane:Sidebar, I checked all boxes under "Show These Items in the Sidebar. BUT these changes are NOT retained. After I close the Preferences, the Sidebar does not change. If I re-open the Sidebar preferences, the relevant boxes are now unchecked, as if I'd never done a thing.
Restarting was the only way to fix the problem. Thereafter, the upper items in the Sidebar (Macintosh HD, external drives, iPod, CDs) sometimes SPONTANEOUSLY disappear. They still show up on the desktop, but tweaking the Sidebar preferences is again ineffective. Restarting is the only solution.
    Thank you for your help,
    Andy

Hi Andy, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
1] Everything elmac says is helpful and correct.
2] An upgrade to 10.4.8 with the 10.4.8 Combo from blue apple / Mac OS Updates might fix your hiccup. If you don't want .8 then .7 combo.
3] [OT] For some minor security issues, it is better to surf the internet in a standard account. If you are surfing in an admin account then here is how to switch and maintain prefs.
Set up a new account in System Preferences / Accounts / +
and make it have admin priviledges. Be sure to remember short name and password since you will be asked to "authenticate" when running in your standard account. This new account is often called "test" in these forums.
Once that is done convert your regular account to standard.

  • Time Machine placing multiple disk images on Desktop

    Hi,
I have recently set-up a 2TB Time Capsule for one of my clients.
Each time Time Machine does an hourly backup - it places a Disk Image icon on the desktop called e.g.'Backup of Anya' - which is basically the sparse disk image mounting from the Time Capsule on the Desktop temporarily whilst TM backs up to it - the problem however is the disk image does not auto-unmount when completed ...
An hour later it will mount another Disk Image backup on the desktop - and so on and so on and so on ...
by the end of the day there are close to 10 unmounted Time Machine backup disks on the desktop - and subsequently in each machines 'Devices' panel in the Finder - all across the network ...
Does anyone know why or how this is happening?
It's my understanding the the image should automatically unmount when TM has completed its hourly backup.
    I'm stumped ...

  • Downloading programs creates disk image on desktop...

When I downloaded Picasa (and Skype) from the web, it created a disk image instead of just installing the program.  When I try to open it from the disk image, it says it is from an unidentified developer and asks for permission to open it.  Is there a way to get this to install the program like others?

You should be happy to get a dialog asking for permission and your password - with all the malware all over the internet, it is much safer that way.
Most of the time, you will get a .dmg and you will need to authorize the install - another safety feature.
Now, a new feature of ML is that safety net of any application that does not come from the app store or the developer has not yet signed with Apple that his apps are ok, you will get that dialog. You can turn it off by going to the Security & Privacy Pane in System Preferences > General > and check "anywhere" (you must click the lock and enter your password first). Or, you can leave the default setting, and when you click to open a downloaded app, hit the Control key while clicking to open and you will get a regular "open" dialog.
