Desktop and Dock

I know that by creating a user account for others on my computer I can lock the dock so no one deletes the shortcuts there, but is there a way from locking down the desktop too??? I have 2 connected networked drives on my desktop that I would like to be there for others users and I dont want people to be able to make changes to it.
Any Help???
Thanks
- Anthony

Each users desktop is their own. The files reside in Users/<username>/desktop

  • WHERE ARE "DESKTOP" AND "DOCK" SETTINGS STORED?

I want to backup my desktop and dock settings. Where are they stored so that I can do this?
    Thx.
    Mike

If you are backing up your home folder, you are also backing up your user prefs all of which are stored in "Your User Name"/Library/Preferences. There are several other "Preferences" folders that contain "global" prefs, namely /Library/Preferences and /System/Library/Preferences.
One potential "trap" though... corrupted prefs files are often the cause of anomalous system behavour so saved prefs should be copied back into new folders with caution.

  • My desktop and dock gone

When I restart or turn on my iMac, I get to the account screen, but once in my account, my desktop and dock are gone and replaced by a grey screen. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you, I think I fixed it. Held F12 during start up.

  • Desktop and Dock refreshing

    Hello,
So my dock and desktop are refreshing (desktop is going white, and dock is doing the same animation as auto-hide, then re-apearing). That's basically the only thing that is happening, but it has become frustrating, and more of an annoyance than anything. I was wondering if anyone had a solution. I tried verifying and repairing my disk by cmd(Apple Sign)+R, and that didn't do a thing. Same problem, although I'm sure it did something good considering it repaired some problem, but would formatting my disk completely help? Would love to know as this would save me time from backing up my iTunes purchases, important documents, etc.
PS: I don't have time machine enabled, and I'm running on the newest update of Lion (10.7.5 - within the passed week.) The problems started sometime after this update if that clears anything up.
    Thanks so much in advance!
    Brandon

Okay, this may sound really bad. I happen to be fairly new to the Mac world, I'm used to getting around for basic use. But where would I go to do this? Do you mean re-installing my drivers, or taking out my components and putting them back in the MacBook itself?
I apologize for seeming so clueless.

  • I ended a task on Activity Monitor on my iMac and now my desktop and dock keep restarting?

So, I was on Activity Monitor trying to see how I could speed up my computer and I found this application which was using up a large percentage of my memory so I decided to end it. I can't remember what it was called but now every so often my desktop turns grey and the dock disappears then they both restart themselves. I'm pretty sure it's to do with me ending that task and not a virus. If it is a virus then tell me, if not then does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Sorry didn't mean to press this solved my question, yeah I've restarted it loads of times! It's been happening for a couple of months now it's really strange because it should just restart itself if it's that essential! But it's still not working-.-

  • VERY strange behavior-- desktop and dock are not working

    Hi all,
My friends' macbook is really messed up and she doesn't have applecare. She is running 10.4.11 and suddenly her desktop stopped responding, and her dock disappeared. Specifically, her desktop is plain blue, and her folder icons are there but they can't be clicked on at all. The dock is missing but the menu on the top is fine. She can open up the finder and navigate to everything via the "go" menu and open everything-- all apps work etc.
I tried going into the dock part of system preferences, and then system prefs crashes. I tried opening the activity monitor and quitting the "finder" process and that didn't help. The dock process doesn't show up at all.
I also tried resetting the PRAM, repairing disk permissions, and booting in single-user mode and running fsck -y. Fsck -y gets stuck on "repairing B-Tree" and then says it can't repair the hard drive.
So I put in her install DVD and tried to run disk utility from there. "Checking B-Tree" showed up in green for a while, and then I got a red error message that the HD could not be repaired.
Now it doesn't boot at all (grey screen, and then it shuts down-- even in safe mode) AND when I try to run the install DVD, the HD doesn't show up as a destination folder. Yikes!
Any advice on what I can try next so she doesn't have to take her computer into apple? She has everything backed up, at least!

Hmmmm, if the drive isn't showing up it may be dead or dying, but Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD though.

This one would require another HD with plenty of space to recover to.
Also, does that MacBook have Firewire?

  • I cant find the desktop and dock

    i neeed help

of course-you've come to the right place, nadon
Okay, the dock should be at the bottom of your screen, or on the left, or the right. It's usually where your most often used apps are. You can, of course, drag stuff into the dock and out again, as you need to.  As for finding the Desktop---
Legend has it that it's above the dock and goes to the top of your monitor's screen, to both the right and left corner on the top and the right and left corner on the bottom. Do you see that Apple in the top left corner of the screen? Everything below that, basically, is the Desktop.
--I thought I've heard all kinds of questions, but you gave me one I've never heard before, and for that, I say "thank you" ---
If you are still stuck, nadon, ask someone else  here or go into your local Apple store and ask someone there. I think you can arrange one-to-one classes which will teach you how to use your Mac.  Sadly, no, they are not free.

  • IMac desktop and dock sizing issues

I have been having an issue recently when booting my iMac. The dock and the background wallpaper show in about 2/3rds of the screen size (see attached pic). This has only happened in the last fortnight. Sometimes the dock will then revert to normal size but the background does not. In system preferences it does not allow me to change the wallpaper - basically nothing happens.
Is there a fix for this - or can anyone advise?
    thanks

    Might be corrupted preferences ...
    Open the Finder.
From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy paste the following;
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.dock.plist file to the Trash.
    Do the same for:  ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    Restart your Mac.
See if that made a difference.

  • My desktop and dock reverted to factory settings??!!?

    Good morning and please HELP!
Something very strange has happened to my PB G4 Ti. When I started up this afternoon I was stunned to see a generic desktop(not the one I've been using for months), the dock settings were changed to default? and was missing about 12 or so icons, and when I tried to open Mail or iTunes for example the start up wizards opened as if I was using for the first time. I don't know what to do. My first reaction was panic..... but after some research it seems that I haven't necessarily lost any files or folders but...it will take some time to make sure nothing is gone. I do have my home folder backed up on a portable hd. and some other important stuff on my iDisc(although this icon has reverted to just looking like a mounted drive)
About my "system" PB G4 Ti -1 GHz -1MB L3 cache- 256KB L2 cache- 768 SDRam- and running OSX 10.4.5.
I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary yesterday-updating some Palm desktop stuff, searching iTunes reading all of my mail and deleting my lovely
    junk mail.
Well sorry for ramblin' on so...this is my first post and am at such a loss. I look forward to any and all suggestions on what the----is happening.

Wow, Buck, that sounds drastic. I have never heard of a reproducable solution to what you're describing. Most of the time a reset to factory settings happens when the internal battery dies and needs replacing. But an entire directory? Maybe someone created a new user account on you and you have auto-logon set? Would not be possible if you're the only user (unless you have a split personality or something).
I'd suggest a reboot, then repair permissions, then reboot and see what happens. You use the Disk Utility program to repair permissions. Don't want to talk down to you on this, you probably already tried that. After the repair routines I'd recommend running the CRON processes with either OnyX or MacJanitor (downloadable).
Let us know how you're doing with your restoration process.

  • Multiple safari on desktop and dock

I have two copies of safari on my dock and I can't delete the extra copy. Not sure how I did this, but seems simple to resolve. also, i have two copies of safari on the desk top. how to delete those as well.
    thank you !

    Diagnosing... it's a blast LOL
I'm not sure how you have managed to do this. One thing's for sure, applications should be kept in the Application folder.
Since you are having problems with the admin account (can't drag/poof) and the other account is missing Safari, my advice to you is instead of spending more time trying to fix this... do an Archive and Install. This will restore your system software.
Go here and read where you see: Archive & Install.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545
Just to be on the safe side, always back up important data before any installations and run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions after the installation.
First, Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
(A programmer is going to look back on these forums someday after they are long archived and wonder what the heck a "drag and poof" was! LOL A sense of humor really helps with this stuff.

  • Desktop And Dock Has Disappered?

Today I Was Just Logged In And Then The Only Thing That Was Their Was The Thing At The Top With Apple. It Was Left On Safari So I Cant Go On Finder And Finder Wasn't On Recent. Also The Background Is Gone And When Ever I Try To Do Anything On It, Their Was No Shape Making Thing Or No Nothing.

Reboot.  if you don't have the  in the menu bar and thus cannot get at the reboot menu item there, then press and hold the power button for ~10 seconds to hard-halt the system, then press the button once (quickly) to power on the system, and see if that clears it.  You may have a hardware problem.

I accidentally dragged the Lion download from the dock onto my desktop and it disappeared in a puff. This seems to have halted the download as it is now 8 hours since purchase and has stuck at 1.75gigs. Could anyone advise please?

The icon in the dock is NOT the file itself.  You simply removed the dock icon.  Go into your Applications folder and you'll find "Install Mac OSX..." and you have what you want.

  • Desktop appearance problem:  For no apparent reason my Mac running OSX 10.4.11 imposed a mesh-like pattern over the folders on my desktop and also across the top of the screen and down the right-hand side where I have the dock.  How do I remove it?

For no apparent reason my Mac (2 GHz PowerPC G5) running 10.4.11 has put a mesh-like pattern over the folders on my desktop and also a band of the same pattern across the top of the screen and down the right-hand side over the dock.  (See screen grabs below.)
It doesn't affect any operations but makes folder names and drop-down menus difficult to read through the pattern.
I'm not aware of changing any settings so suspect I must have clicked on something without noticing.  How do I get rid of the overlaid pattern, please?

Information about my computer is as follows:

Have just installed Mavericks and restarted the MacBook Pro. That was 3 hours ago and after logging in, I got my wallpaper and dock, but none of my desktop icons, just the spinning coloured wheel. It's been like that for 2 hours. Is this normal? What should I do, please?
I tried holding the on/off switch down to make it shut down, but when I turned it back on again, the same thing happened and none of the keys etc makes any difference.
    HELP!!!! Please.

No, what you're experiencing is not normal.
Try booting whilst holding down the Shift key - this will allow you to boot into Safe Mode, disabling third-party kernel extensions, etc. Your Mac will be slow to boot and will operate sluggishly. That's normal. If you can get in using Safe Mode then you have some start-up item that doesn't play well with Mavericks.

  • Can't find Finder and Dock and Desktop has disappeared

I was backing up my MBA (OS 10.6.0) today using Superduper and something strange happened.
My hard drive became corrupted and filled with files (105 GB used and 0 GB available). The HDD capacity is 120GB. About 15GB is bootcamp. The backup failed.
I deleted a few files and freed up 200MB when I realized the hard drive had become full (I had 20GB free space on the Macintosh HD before this).
When I checked Disk Utility it told me my hard drive was corrupted and I should repair it using the operating system disc (Snow Leopard) to start up the computer and then go to Disk utility and perform Repairs.
I did all that and Disk Utility told me the hard drive was OK after the repair.
However, when I restart the computer, I get a blue screen. I cannot see the Dock. And Finder cannot be found. When I do Force Quit, there is no Finder in the list.
For some reason even though I do not have a Dock, I was able to get a menu at the top. I don't know what I did to get it. Suddenly I got a message saying I couldn't open iTunes even though I didn't try to open it (the Dock has disappeared). But at least I got some menu at the top.
With the menu I was able to open some items on Recent Items including Firefox.
I went to my email and tried to send some files to the same email address. I was able to browse Finder by doing this and my Desktop seems to be OK. I can open various files by using the browse function in upload files in my email and they all seem OK.
So I know that my Desktop files are intact. I haven't checked them all (I have like 50 files on my desktop) but on a quick look, all the Desktop items appear to be there.
How can I get the Desktop and the Dock back?
How can I get Finder to show up?
I just have a blue screen at the moment.
When I get the Desktop back I want to erase some files and create space.
Somehow the hard drive got filled up when I tried to do a backup using Superduper.

    All resolved.
I attached an external drive to the MBA in an attempt to export Firefox Scrapbook files onto it.
Exporting failed (my fault – I didn't follow the steps correctly) and I ended up having to restart the computer.
Surprisingly the screen opened in bootcamp.
Because there was an external hard drive connected to the computer, I presume this is what prompted the computer to open in bootcamp. Normally I would have to hold down the Option key to open bootcamp but my computer's hard drive had been corrupted so ....
From bootcamp (Windows XP) I restarted the computer, this time holding down the Option key.
I selected the Mac volume as the startup disk.
When it booted, it sputtered a few times and it looked like it was going to open in the blue screen again (I could see the familiar strange things that occur when it opens in the blue screen). However, after a while, it opened with the Desktop screen.
All the icons I had on the Desktop appeared and I had the screen back to normal with Dock and everything there.
I deleted some items (I only had 200MB left) to create some room on the hard drive.
After browsing the web, I came across the reason for why my HD suddenly filled up during the failed back up before things went awry.
    From Pink Mutant
    http://pinkmutant.com/articles/TigerMisc.html
"Failed Backups and the Volumes Folder
Another potential stealer of hard drive space is a failed backup, where the drive the backup was supposed to go to was unavailable, so the backup software simply copied the files into the invisible /Volumes folder. Again, use the Go and Go to Folder menu bar item ....."
This is exactly what happened to me. I found the two volumes, "Untitled" and "Untitled 1" as Pink Mutant said I would in "Go" ("Go to Folder") and I deleted them (I should have backed up my computer before doing this though). Straightaway, 20GB of space came back on my HD.
My computer had copied the backup onto my HD instead of the external HD during the failed backup operation. That's why the internal HD filled up.
So it's a relief that I got the Desktop back again – purely by accident – and I also found what was filling up all the HD space.
So a tip: if someone finds their backup fails for whatever reason, don't try to back up again. Check HD space and if it has suddenly shrunken, go to "Go", and then "Go to Folder", type "/Volumes" and click "Go". That should bring up the offending volumes if any. Move them to Desktop. Check "Get Info" and have a look at the contents if you can (I couldn't). Do a backup of the computer. Then delete the problem volumes (if you find that these volumes are the cause of the problem). You can then delete the same volumes from the backup at this point.
