Desktop and finder window icons missing

Some of the icons on the top of my desktop suddenly went blank. they are there since I can click where they were and still use them. The same has happened to the top of the finder window as well. Here are some screen shots. Any one have an idea how to fix this? I ran MainMenu Pro disk permissions repair, cleaned the cache, did all maintenance and restarted with the no result.

Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist and com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plists to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plists to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

    Hi robfromkinglake west,
Try and isolate the issue.  Check if it's only with this drive.
Check the drive with Disk Utility

I've never seen a drive take 20 minutes to mount.

  • Desktops and "find window"

In Mavericks I started using different desktops for different sets of programs, and I regularly use command-tap to move from one app to the next. But I have one problem: if the other program is on a different desktop and if it has a 'Find and Replace' window open, that F&R window will migrate to the desktop I'm at, whereas the document windows of that program stay where they are, and even the usual command-` will not reveal them. I can access them through the Window menu, but then I loose the F&R window … Most annoying.
I don't think it is a problem of the particular app. I tried NisusWriter, BBEdit and Scrivener. It seems all programs that have a seperate F&R window are affected.
Anyone any idea how this can be remedied (if it can)?
    best regards

    Tariq,
what do you mea with default console? Is it the external window that Forms can run in, or is it the Forms MDI window itself? If you could give us an idea of what you are trying to achieve then maybe the answer is an easy one to give.

  • Blinking menu bar, icons on desktop and Finder windows.

This happened after I restarted the computer for installing software updates. The only thing that didn't blink was the dock. When I open an application, it blinks as well, but a little slower, so that gives me time to click around. Even shutting down/restarting is a problem, since the menu bar blinks so quickly that I couldn't click on it. I had to hold down the power button to shut down.
I tried creating a new account and logged in. Everything remains normal in the new account.
I went into Library>Preferences, deleted the file called "com.apple.finder.plist" and restarted. It didn't work.
Is there anything else I can do? I really don't want to reformat my mac and lose all the applications installed.

Have you installed any third-party utilities and/or menubar utilities, contextual menu items, preference panes, etc. These most typically are the cause of such a problem. Also corrupted cache files may cause problems. Use a utility such as TinkerTool System to clear all system, user, and font caches then immediately reboot. You should not need to erase your drive to fix the problem, but the problem is definitely caused by something you either installed that is incompatible or something corrupted in your Home folder such as a preference file.

  • Flashing Gray screen on my desktop and my dock is missing, whats happening?

Hi. I got this problem while ago, when I start it up and log in on my admin account I have this gray screen flashing on my desktop and my dock is missing. But I can still access almost everything but what the **** gray screen flashing is annoying and I dont know where my dock goes. Anyone knows what is happening on my laptop? Thanks.

Sounds like you have assistive services activated (There is a three finger short cut you may have in accidentally pressed)
    Check Accessiblity in system preferences
under display make sure Grayscale is not checked
under audio make sure flash display is not checked
As for the dock make sure you haven't got it hidden by placing mouse pointer to each of the left/right and bottom screen edges
If not go to the following folder in finder.
Open Finder window and mouse and click to the Go menu to view list of actions. On your key board press the Option (alt) key and you see a extra action location added after Home - this is the hidden library folder in your Home directory
This contains all sorts of personal setting preferences
Now continue to hold down the option key and mouse click on the Library item to open the contents in the main finder window.
Within the window locate and open the folder  - Preferences
    Locate this file from within
    com.apple.dock.plist
    move this to the trash
    Shut and restart your Mac
The default dock setting will appear - Empty trash
    Tell us how it goes.

  • Accidently deleted the "desktop and screen saver" icon

    Hi,
I accidently deleted the desktop and screen saver icon from the system preferences. I deleted it from the trash too, is there anything I can do to get it back?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
Exactly how did you delete it?
Not knowing what computer or OS you are using, it's not possible to provide any help. We need more info and a filled-in profile.
You can always restore the system from your backup.

You do not tell us what OS version you have. In OS 10.8.2, do this:
Apple Menu / System Preferences / Language and Text / Input Sources.
Select the language you want. Mine is set to Canadian English.

  • Invisible Startup Disk Icon on Desktop and Finder

Today suddenly I found that my Startup disk icon was gone from the desktop and from the Finder. I did some searching and found the following solution that may be useful for someone else:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=4932292#post4932292
    I pasted the solution below:
    from a Terminal window, type:
    ls -lOd /
(That's lowercase ell, lowercase ess, space, minus, lowercase ell, capital oh, lowercase dee, space, forward slash)
You should get something like this:
    hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
    drwxrwxr-t 32 root admin - 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
Sounds like you might see something like this instead:
    hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
    drwxrwxr-t@ 32 root admin hidden 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
(note it says "hidden" instead of "-")
    To fix this, type:
    sudo chflags nohidden /
and provide your admin password. You won't get any output back from the command but the icon should now appear on your desktop, and the hidden flag should go away if you repeat the 'ls -lOd /' command.
And just in case you missed it above, you've got to be sure Hard disks are turned on in Finder General Preferences under "Show these items on the Desktop"

A few days after trying the solution in my previous post, I realized that the Startup disk icon was still missing from Devices in the Finder's sidebar.
So, following some advice from other forums, I went and deleted com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.sidebarlists.plist from homedirectory/library/preferences. Then did a control-option-click on Finder in the Dock and chose "relaunch".
So this completed the fix. Coincidentally this also fixed a "freeze" issue that I was having.

  • Finder window icon and font size

Is there anyway to increase the icon & font sizes that are located in the left column? I could not find any settings that will allow me to do so. I have already increased the icon & font sizes in the main Finder window which had no effect on the sizes in the left column.
    I have a Macbook Pro
    Resolution - 1280x800

If you're referring to the sidebar then the answer is, "No."

  • Finder window icons not showing

In the main part of my finder window when I am in column view, the icons for each individual file are not showing. The file name is there as is the extension (if I go into preferences and enable it). I am concerned as-although in itself it is merely an aesthetic thing-I fear it could be the symptom of something more serious. Thus far I have repaired disk permissions but that is about the extent of repair jobs that I can do.
Thanks in advance if you can help.

This could possibly be related to changing the "view options" - mine seem to have corrected itself when I right clicked > show view options and then changed some minor settings - think I changed it to last view and then clicked "Use as defaults" - seemed to work. But this wasn't due to changing it to list view as the icons were also missing as soon as I changed to the different view - just seemed to work when I clicked "Use as defaults" and then they appeared when I open and closed the finder. Hope it works anyway.

  • Can't select items on desktop via finder window when another application opens that finder window

When another program (like premier pro, or gmail with chrome) opens a finder window (in order to import files, or make attachments), I am unable to select items on my desktop.
My workaround is to open an independent finder window, add a tag to the file or folder i want to use, then go back to the 'import' window in premier pro, or the attachment window in gmail in chrome, and select the relevant tag in the lefthand column, then select the file or folder in the righthand column. This seems slow and frustrating and unnecessary.
Is there a really obvious thing I'm missing? Please be merciful, Apple Support Community...

Hi Sue, if you can navigate in Finder do this:
navigate to yourhome/library/preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist (if this exists in 10.2 - not sure)
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
Then log out and back in again. Or restart.
    Good luck, let us know.

  • Little semi-transparent Finder window icons, tabs

When I move a Finder window, I sometimes accidentally grab the tab (because there's very little visual distinction between the two, poor UI IMHO). When I release the mouse, it leaves a semi-transparent icon version of the Finder window. You can literally have your desktop littered with these and I'm wondering why Apple has let this bug go for so long?
How do you get rid of them?

  • How to drag file from desktop into Finder window?

I use the four finger gesture to reveal my desktop, then I drag and file and intend to put it in one of the Finder windows that was there before the "reveal desktop" gesture. How do I get the windows to come back while the file is being dragged? There seems to be no hot corner or keyboard shortcut for "unrevealing" the desktop.

Got it! That was SO EASY...thank you very much

  • Hard Disk (Macintosh HD) gone from my desktop and Finder sidebar.

Hello. My hard disk is gone from my desktop and I can't find it in Finder as well. I tried logging into a different user account and it doesn't show up either. I don't know if a cache file in my first account might be the problem. Also if I try Shift>Command and press C, it is not there either I just see my network icon. Any help is appreciated.

  • Finder Window Buttons Missing

I seem to have a problem which I just can't figure out. I don't see any previous comments on this. I am using OS X .4.9. Not long after my update I noticed that the buttons at the top of every Finder window had disappeared. That includes the Next, Previous, and all the view buttons. I am also missing the eject buttons next to drives in the side bar. Sometimes the drives in the sidebar disappear.
I have trashed the preferences for the Finder. I have repaired permissions. I have rebuilt the directory with Disk Warrior. I reinstalled 10.4.9 with the combo installer. I replaced preferences with my backup. Every time I try one of these I get everything back but eventually they disappear again.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Thanks MJ,
I actually thought of that as well. I didn't do a safe boot but I did look in my login items and I removed one that I did not recognize. The others were ones I have had for a long time so I didn't think they would be causing any problems. No menubar hacks of any kind.
Thanks for the reply. I will try the safe boot just to see what happens. The biggest problem is that is keeps clearing up after I change something, then things start disappearing later.
I should also mention that it seems to only affect my regular work account which is not an administrative account. When I have logged into my administrative account I have not seen this happen but I may not have been in it long enough. It's hard to tell when it happens over time rather than a constant immediate problem. So I have only been working with the Library files in that one account.
