Desktop and screensaver pref. corrupt?

Have Intel Core 2 Duo iMac w/OSX 10.6.8 installed. desktop wall paper returns to previous setting regardless of trying to change it. Wondering of prefs are corrupt and if so, how do I change or correct it?  Thanks

This is happening on my iPad (ios7) too, very frustrating.

  • Desktop and Screensaver preferences don't work;

Desktop and Screensaver Preferences worked perfectly until the latest update, 10. 5. 7 were installed.
I tried every suggestion and approach to solve this problem, nothing worked. So I reinstalled 10 .5
and it works perfectly again. What changes were made in the 10.5.7 combo that would cause this problem? J. Weigel

They work fine on my computers also.
If it occurs again, see if it also happens in a newly created User Account. If it doesn't, there is probably a corrupt preference file. If that's the case, return to your usual User account and remove all the .plist files with screensaver or desktop in them from the folder
    Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences
including any .plist files in the ByHost folder in that Preferences folder.
If it does occur in another Users Account, you will probably need to do an Archive & Install from the install disk.

  • Beachball When I Access Desktop and Screensaver Preferences

This is strange. When I try to access Desktop and Screensaver Preferences in System Preferences, I get a beachball after a few seconds. The D and S Pref window shows up at first but there is nothing showing for either the current desktop or the current screensaver, and clicking on anything hastens the appearance of the beachball. I then have to force quit System Preferences.
All other items in System Preferences seem to be working OK. The only other oddity I have noticed is that downloaded files do not appear directly on top of my Macintosh HD icon on my Desktop (like they always had), but they appear on the Desktop in another nearby location.
I have logged out and in, restarted, repaired permissions, verified disk and even reinstalled the Combo 10.4.11 updater. I have also trashed com.apple.desktop. plist, all without success.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Steve M.

Thanks for responding baltwo. After puzzling over my problem, I finally arrived at the idea that somehow the screensaver I was using had developed a problem. So I pulled my WorldBook 2003 screensaver to the Desktop and logged out and back in and lo and behold my Screensaver Preferences worked as normal!
Since my WorldBook installation is not very current, I suppose there may be conflicts of some sort with 10.4.11 (of course I don't know for sure when this problem started).
I guess I could put the WorldBook screensaver back in place and try deleting the prefs you suggested and see what happens. I'm a little leery of deleting systempreferences prefs for fear of losing a bunch of my settings. Since I don't really need the WB screensaver I may just leave it out permanently.
By the way, what exactly is meant by the ByHost preferences?
    Thanks,
    Steve M.

  • Can't access Desktop and Screensaver Preferences

    Hello,
I have had my macbook for 3 months and absolutely love it. I just have one problem which has occurred over the last couple or days.
When I go into the System Preferences folder I cannot access the Desktop and Screensaver Preferences. And instead of the regular icon for this, there is the System Preferences icon and the letters are jumbled below the icon.
I've searched through this forum to find a solution and have followed the following steps, to no avail:
I've checked for software update but my computer is updated
Have used Disk Repair using startup disk, but no errors found
Downloaded and ran Yasu, to clear check and clear caches
    Deleted apple.com.screensaver.xxx.plist - in Home/library/Preferences/Byhost
Finally, I attempted to delete com.apple.preferencepanes.cache, and also com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindex.cache, but they always reappear in the Cache folder, no matter if I move them to desktop and delete them, or just put them straight in the Trash.
This all sounds really longwinded, sorry if it's unnecessarily long. I hope someone is able to help!
    Cheers.

  • Macbook pro "Desktop and screensaver" missing

I don't know how this actually happened. But one day I was tired of my screensaver and went to go change it. So when I clicked on system preferences I noticed the "Desktop and screensaver" pane missing. I don't even know how long it's been like this. Is there any way to fix this without losing any data I have on my macbook?

I am having the same issue.

i have a photo that i cant get rid of in my desktop and screensaver settings and i cant find it in my iphoto library

  • NO iPhoto Library showing in Desktop and Screensaver Menu in SL

    Hi experts,
I have experienced a problem after I updated to SL last night.
I made a fresh install of both SL and iLife 09 on my mbp unibody late 2008.
Afterwards, I replaced the my fresh iphoto library simply with my old iphoto 09 library from time machine (no migration tool, only copy pasts).
But now I recognized a problem that I see no iphoto library in my Desktop and Screensaver Menu in control panel. I cant set iphoto library photos as screensaver cause I cant see them
Does anyone have a solution for it? or does anybody face the same issue?
    Thanks!!!

I have the same thing. I wiped everything clean and installed Snow Leopard/iLife '09/etc. I run my iPhoto lib from an Airdisk and I just set iPhoto to point to that same library on the wireless disk. Everything works fine, except I can't set iPhoto pics as my desktop. I see a label for iPhoto (just like when it used to work) except there's no arrow by it and it's empty. If I plug the computer straight into the disk and use the same library, it works fine. Any thoughts?

  • My 'desktop and screensaver' can't be change. it keeps on loading

I used to change my wallpaper quite a lot but one day I got stuck on a picture. I then figured out way a way to change it. To change it I went on Google Images and found a really nice wallpaper, went of full size image, clicked the ctrl button and click 'Set as desktop background'. This worked but then one day when I logged in my wallpaper was nothing but a black screen. I tried several times to change it how I did the last time it went wrong, but it didn't work. I then tried going on 'System Preferences' -> 'Desktop and Screensaver'. But when I clicked on Desktop and Screensaver the waiting logo came up and stayed for about 3 hours. I then had to force close System Preferences. I have tried this every day and I still get the same result.
Any suggestions to this problem will be appreciated Thanks

  • Desktop and Screensaver Preferences Freezes!

I added wallpapers folder to the desktop and screensaver sidebar then I moved the folder to a different place,
Now, when I open the Desktop and Screensaver, it freezes all the time.
I tried to delete the files under libarary but i could not find any of them.
I rebuilt iPhoto, but it was not the problem.
    Thanks

    Back up all data.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
    Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following item to the Desktop:
    Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the item on the Desktop back where it came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the item.

  • Desktop and Screensaver preferences crashes upon opening it...

    hi,
recently for no reason whenever i try to go to desktop and screensaver option in the system preferences it crashes automatically and means i have to force quit it. Its very odd. Is there a way to stop it doing this?
    thanks

    Hello t:
recently for no reason whenever i try to go to desktop and screensaver option in the system preferences it crashes automatically and means i have to force quit it.
If it crashes, there should not be a force quit required. What do you see in the crash logs?
In any event, try trashing a preference file (com.apple.systempreferences.plist) and restarting.

  • Preferences problem ... desktop and screensaver function missing

The desktop and screensaver function in my preferences has disappeared, not to be found at all on my computer.  I saw this problem posted with the response to download Pacifist.  I did that but cannot figure out how that would help, so I still have the problem.  Any recommendations?

Have you tried repairing disk permissions for the screensaver issue?
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
If that doesn't help... try the 10.5.7 combo update available here. http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7_ComboUpdate
Make sure and repair disk permissions after the installation.

  • My desktop and screensaver options stopped functioning. I think I may have removed an app for it.

Have iMac with Mountain Lion. Yesterday I ran a program called MacKeeper. It identified problems. I removed several apps. Now my desktop and screensaver options won't function. What can I do? Thanks.

MacKeeper will cause you no end of problems and useless on a Mac.
Download and install this free utility >  Download AppCleaner for Mac
That will uninstall not only the MacKeeper application but all the associated files.
Do not install MacKeeper: Apple Support Communities
Open System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Savar > Screen Saver
If you cannot access those setttings, you need to restore OS X using  the built in utilities in  OS X Recovery
FYI:   OS X Recovery requires a high speed broadband connection.
Backup all your important files before repairing or restoring OS X just in case.

  • Missing "Desktop and Screensaver" Pane

Hey everyone, I just needed some help with my Macbook Pro. So here's the deal. When I open up System Preferences, I don't see the pane for "Desktop and Screensaver". I can't even open it up when I try opening it through the right click menu. It just makes a error sound. But I can change my desktop wallpaper if I open up a picture in a internet browser. Any thoughts on how to get it back would be great!
    Thanks!

Copy it over from your bootable backup/clone or your Time Machine backup. It's entitled DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefPane. If you have neither, download Pacifist and extract it from your install disk. Then, put it in /System/Library/PreferencePanes/.

  • Desktop and Screensaver Preference Pane not loading

First hiccup with Yosemite. Under System Preferences, Desktop and Screensaver Preference Pane will not open, saying "Could not load Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane."
Desktop is solid Aqua. Have removed Preferences, rebuilt Permissions and reinstalled OS X in Recovery Mode, but no go. Does the same in Safe Mode yet is fine in a New User Account. I have Little Snitch updated and have tried turning it off. No different. Any suggestions? Not causing any annoyance but just wondering why it refuses to load.
    Thanks in advance

Try creating an empty iPhoto Library for a test.  Open iPhoto while holding Option.
    1. Yes. Removed now but no go
    2. Removed. No difference
    3. iPhoto works fine
