Desktop Background won't stay!

When I create a desktop background from a photo in iPhoto, it doesn't remain as the background after I restart the computer (or shut down and boot up again)...the background goes back to the default galaxy shot.  Anyone know why this is?  Thank you for your help!

That is a corrupt preference file.

  • Desktop picture won't stay

Hi- I recently had to re install my OS from my timemachine backup (from an external HD.) I had everything set up as factory new before using the backup and didn't create any new accounts. Things seem ok now but my Desktop photo (one of my own photos) won't stay- it keeps reverting back to one I had set before all the trouble. Any ideas? It's just annoying.

    Delete the
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    and the
    com.apple.desktop.plist
as instructed in this User Tip and reboot the computer from the Apple menu.

  • Desktop wallpaper won't stay changed

I have had this issue since day one with this macbook pro.
I change the desktop background following the directions and no matter what I do after I shut down and use it again it just goes to a blank blue screen.
When i look at the desktop settings there is my picture like it should be but the macbook is not acting right.
This is really frustrating me. Its seems like a simple thing but the macbook pro wont do it.
What in the world can i do?

I had the same issue for the past couple weeks and I tried a few suggestions I was able to find on the Internet but no luck.  I decided to go into iPhoto and find the images I wanted to use for the desktop wallpaper and while doing so, I messed around with the menu feature which allows you to set images as your desktop.
After I got tired of tinkering around in iPhoto, I exited all programs, then re-started.  The image I switched to before the re-start was still present.  I re-booted next.  The image stayed.  Since then, I've switched wallpapers a few times and they all stay like they're supposed to after a re-boot.
I don't know what I did to 'fix' the problem but I was able to muck around in iPhoto for about 5 minutes before I got bored and re-started.  Maybe this is something you could try?
I wish I knew what the problem was.  I didn't delete any files but I did have to re-build the Events image folder in iPhoto yesterday when I tried to fix the problem.  I had inadvertently removed all iPhoto images not knowing that iPhoto has some sort of interaction with desktop image settings.  I'm sure an Apple developer would be able to figure out what's happening but it's not obvious to me.

  • Desktop background won't stick

a couple of days ago my desktop background changed back to the default background (that blue swirly thing) and now i can't get a new background up. whenever i click on another one, it pops up on the desktop for a split second and then reverts back to the default background.
as a solution, i can create a new folder, put one picture in it, and then set it up so the pictures rotate every 5 seconds. that keeps the one picture up (since there is only one picture for it to rotate), but i can't get one to just stay without putting the rotate option on. this is really bizarre.
also, how do i get support from apple?? is there a number i can call or an email address or something? i've been on this website for a while trying to fix this and can't find any support. everybody talks about how great apple's customer service is so i guess i'm missing somehing.
thank you in advance to those who help me out; i just got this ibook 2 weeks ago and i'm not used to apples yet.

nevermind, it still doesn't work. has anybody else had this problem? also, how do i get help from apple??

  • Selected Desktop Background Won't Save

I generally use my photos from an external drive as my desktop background.  This was all working great until Lion.  Now, everytime I restart the computer one of the apple backgrounds appears (the space one).  I have deleted the plists and restarted, etc and nothing seems to work.  What's going on.  I'm running a 27" imac with intel processor (new last June).

  • In Sys Prefs Desktop, folders won't stay in sidebar

In the Desktop & Screen Saver pane of System Preferences, any folder I've added to the list at left by clicking the 'plus' button [+] fails to appear when I close Sys Prefs and open it again, unless that folder's name is selected when I close Sys Prefs. Additional added folders will not remain.
This problem is affecting one user account only. The others are fine.
I can add other folders, but they don't persist after I close System Preferences. By clicking the 'minus' button [-], I can remove the folder I've added and it remains properly removed. Since I can add only one folder, I can't really alter the list in any useful way and so the plus and minus buttons become almost pointless; there may as well be just a simple Open dialog for choosing the one non-Apple folder of images I'd like to use (except that, as I said, the pane does behave as expected in other user accounts).
The screenshot above shows the Desktop pane's folder list right after I've added two folders, 'fluff images, misc.' and 'night earth'. Since 'night earth' is selected, that folder will remain in the list after I close Sys Prefs, but the other folder will not:
So for now I have no way within the Desktop pane of Sys Prefs to maintain a list of several favorite folders of desktop images. Not terribly important, but that I can't fix it bothers me.
    Things I've tried:
    repair permissions (several times)
    delete:
    com.apple.desktop.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    reset PRAM

This annoyance is more common and perplexing than I thought:

  • Solid color background won't stay as specified

I'm trying to put a gray (68c, 63m, 60y, 51k) background behind a smaller element in a clip. Every time I click okay, save and render the file, I go back and check the gray in the Solid color control tab, and it has changed to 77c, 73m, 71y and 38k. Very frustrating. Any one know what I'm doing wrong?
(I'm posting stills and video clips to a site that has a gray field I want to match. The CMYK settings I got from the stills when I set them up in Photoshop and they match the site background perfectly. That's why I'm using CMYK. It is odd that FCE lets you use CMYK, but it does, so it should work, right?)

    Hi -
I believe that while you can enter a color value in CYMK, the sequence you are working on in FCE is always in RGB colorspace. Therefore the CYMK value is converted to the nearest RGB value for display as video.
    Hope this helps.

  • Background won't stay transparent

When I make a project with a transparent background the background becomes white when I export it for use in another application/program/etc.
When I create the project I set the background to transparent. I do not add a new background to compete with the transparent background.
    Any way around this?

I have used Photoshop CS3 and worked primarily on a MAC for the past 5 years. However, at my current employment I have to perform all work using a PC, with Photoshop CS4. When using a MAC, I know you can select images that you wish to be transparent, go to Help, and export image as transparent, allowing you to bring this image into any program displaying only the object, no background is included. How can I perform the same function in Photoshop CS4 on a PC? I have tried searching for help or tips on-line, but instructions either don't work or not explained to where they make sense to me. I hate PC! I love my MAC!!!
Thanks for any help you all can provide.
    Thanks,

  • Background Image Won't Stay!

Okay, I repaired disk permissions, repaired the disk and reinstalled the system (archive and install)
If I change my background image it only stays until I switch spaces. Then I go back to the background prefs and it is as if I never changed it. It always reverts to the Space pic. The only way to change it is to go to /System/Library/CoreServices and replace DefaultDesktop.jpg with the image I want... it's kinda annyoing to do this. How can I fix it?

delete the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist and log out/in. then try changing the desktop background again.

  • Mac Mini (10.5.8) won't stop cycling through "Nature" desktop backgrounds.

My Mac mini is changing its desktop background by itself about every 30 seconds, strictly from the "Nature" folder of backgrounds. Tried switching to a different folder with a different desktop, but it will revert back to the nature folder after holding it for about a minute. I don't have it set to change the image. Using an LG monitor.

This is just the settings for Desktop & Screen Saver, let me know if you need screenshots of any other settings.

  • Desktop background settings won't hold

I use a folder of pictures to rotate randomly as my desktop background image. Whenever I restart the computer, the background image defaults to the purple-ish Snow Leopard background -- the one that looks sort of like a purple sunrise. I then have to open the Desktop/Screensaver preference pane and re-designate the folder with the pics in it. After that, it works perfectly -- until I restart. Then I have to go through the same drill.
I tried deleting the User>Library>Preferences>desktop.plist file but that didn't help. Still the same problem.
    Any idea? Thanks.

Try it again, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • Why won't my desktop background save?

I have the wierdest problem. Everytime I try to change my desktop background it goes back to an old one when I restart my computer. Has anyone had this happen to them? I have Lion version 10.7.3

I would get my desktop background from airliners.net. The background wouldn't change and I can't get photos on airliners.net

    How was the problem corrected?

  • Desktop background settings won't obey me

Hi everyone. This is probably just me being dumb and not noticing something basic, but I've looked at everything I can think of.
As a bit of background (heh) I just got this new Macbook and transferred everything over with Time Machine, from 10.5 on my eMac to 10.6 on the Macbook. That could maybe have something to do with it? I dunno.
I have my desktop pictures set to change every 15 minutes. I have the folder selected, which I've originally named Desktop pictures. There's a problem though. I've only just noticed it in the past couple of days, but it could have been (I've had the Macbook for a week or 2). I have it set to Center. I have triple-checked this, switched it off to another setting and then back, everything I can think of. Sys Prefs definitely has CENTER selected. However, when a pictures smaller than the screen resolution comes up... it tiles it. Actually, when I first noticed it wasn't doing what I wanted, it was stretching them/zooming in on them to fit the screen. Now it seems to be tiling them.
I am weirded out. Can anyone help me? I didn't change my settings after the move to the Macbook. The settings definitely have Center selected. Why is it stretching/tiling??

click on the house button in the sidebar of any finder window and go to Library->preferences. delete the file com.apple.desktop.plist and log out/in. your desktop background will be reset to the default. set it again as you like and see if the problem goes away.

  • EMac won't stay asleep

All of a sudden, my eMac won't stay asleep. I've turned off all the settings in Energy Saver (including the Wake options for modem/LAN). I also have no USB or Firewire connections.
I've repaired permissions, optimized system, cleaned caches, and zapped the pram.
I've tested on/off my LAN. I've also tried unhooking my mouse and keyboard.
Here is the system and console log after I put it to sleep:

    C2D 20" iMac, G4 1.33 iBook, 1Ghz eMac, G3 333 iMac (Blueberry)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   5G iPod, 2G 4GB Nano, 3G 20GB iPod, 512MB iPod Shuffle

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
    Cheers!
