Desktop bootup freezes

I bought a HP Pavilion 500-203a one month and one day ago.  It runs Windows 8.1.  All of a sudden it hangs during boot up.  I restart the desktop.  The HP logo comes up followed by the spinning dots, then a black screen and it just sits there.  The HDD light next to the On/Off switch flashes every once in a while.  Every 30 seconds or so two icons flash up very briefly on the screen - the ENG US icon in the bottom  right hand corner of the screen and the Mute Sound icon in the bottom left hand corner.   The boot up does not proceed past this point.  I do not have Windows 8.1 recovery disks.  I have restarted and pressed F2 to get to the System Quick Test screen.  Everything tests out OK.  Warranty ends 30 Oct 2015.  What to do ?

Rather than spend hours or days trying to figure out the root cause, I rebooted, hit F11 and few times as it was starting up, to get to the Troubleshoot options utility, took a chance and simply did a System Restore from a 6 day old System Restore Image on the HDD.  Problem gone away.  Successfull reboot, therafter.  Lesson learnt - take periodic system image backups.

My laptop's desktop keeps freezing. All my icons become inactive and the only way I can access them is via the folders on my toolbar. Any advice?
Also, my Internet explorer CONTINUALLY freezes up or takes FOREVER to load any data. I have been using Google Chrome, but prefer IE. Any advice on this as well?

  • Blackberry Desktop Software freezes at message "Action Engine Loading Configuration"

I have Windows 7 Professional. My Outlook profile is saved on an Exchange server and my Blackberry had previously beeng syncing with Outlook in this setup for nearly a year without issue.
Recently, the desktop software freezes at "Action engine loading configuration" message and is unrecoverable. I have tried the following things to rectify the situation:
    1) Adjust the organizer settings not to sync anything except the date & time. Still happens
    2) Delete all data from the device using Desktop Software and try to resync. Same problem
    3) Uninstall and reinstall Blackberry Desktop Software and try to sync with both the original set of data and the empty, deleted data Blackberry. Same problem.
    4) Tried wiping the blackberry completely using JL Cmdr, reinstalling the OS. In this scenario I can sync Addresses but once I sync Calendar the problems happens again and I am unable to ever sync it again (Including thereafter when de-selecting the Calendar option.
At this point I have spent hours scouring Google for help and trying the above items. This has been disastrous for me as I rely on the sync'd data for work and have already starting missing things.
I don't believe there is anything wrong with the Blackberry, as it works fine and works perfectly well after re-loading a fresh, OS, etc.
I have tried playing with the support logs but because the software freezes before calendar can sync, nothing is in the log that states if there is a corrupt record in calender causing this. Nothing dramatically changes in my calendar between the day that syncing worked and the day it didnt.
I've tried searching the Blackberry forums and have found some info but nothing helpful. RIM does not provide support telephone numbers and AT&T support has continuously demonstrated itself as worthless over my time with them.
Is there any resources left at all that I could try to get past this issue, not waste any more time, and be able to resolve the issue?
Thank you for reading and for any input you are willing to offer.

I had a Dell PalmPilot type device in 2003 that sync'd contnously with my computer using ActiveSync. I didn't ever have to click Sync, I would make a change on either device and they would sync.
The fact that it is 2011 and we still work with Desktop Manager, the biggest piece of **bleep** software I still have to use, is simply pathetic.

  • BB Desktop Software freezes

The desktop software freezes when it has synced 476 of 707 records.  I have removed and reinstalled the software again-and-again, I have used another computer to try to sync with the same results, I have run a full virus scan (Kaspersky), I have sent-in the phone for repairs and nothing.  It still freezes at the exact same spot.  Someone please advise!

I have the exact same problem I need help too

  • My iMac desktop keeps freezing???

I recently purchased a brand new 27 inch iMac. I've owned it for about 2 months give or take. For some reason everytime I go to drag a file on my desktop it freezes the file in place and freezes my entire desktop. I'm still able to access the apps and get on the internet but everything on my desktop is frozen and the file that froze in place bleeds through every app I open. All I get on my desktop is the little spinning color wheel. I hold the power button down to shut it down and when i turn it back on it works fine, but as soon as I touch any of the file on my desktop it does the same thing. What should I do? Is there a way to fix this???

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • BB Desktop 7 freezes when it gets to 2190 contacts.

Can anyone help me out with my desktop manager freezing?  I'm using PC  BB Desktop software version 7.0.0.59 (Bundle 60) and every time it looks at my contacts and gets to 2190, it freezes and shuts down the BB desktop software.  I have around 3000 contacts so it's not even finished reviewing all of them.

"Reviewing"? Hmmm...do you mean it's attempting to synchronize with your Desktop Organizer (e.g., Outlook), and it's stopping on that record? If so, that record might be somehow corrupt. To find it, you need to export your Contacts from your Desktop Organizer...I have heard that the order they are exported will match the order that the RIM Desktop Software is working with them, which will allow you to find that record and then edit it in your Organizer to correct the corruption (you might have to copy the data to a new Contact Record and delete the old one).
    Good luck!

  • MacBook is causing my G4 Desktop to Freeze!!

I have an 867MHz PowerPC G4 Desktop with an old school Airport Card sending out the internet to the house wirelessly.
My 15-inch PowerBook has ZERO issues with it, but every time I use my MacBook to catch the signal, within an hour my desktop will freeze. The wireless signal disappears, the keyboard, mouse and programs all stop working, requiring a hard restart.
It is 100% my MacBook that's causing the issue, every single time.
Does anybody have any clue what's going on in this situation?

  • Remote Desktop Connection freezes Windows 7 64-bit

At home, I just upgraded from a Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit desktop to a new Dell with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit OS.  Remote Desktop Connection from my old home PC to my work PC worked great for years even after upgrading both to Windows 7 Ultimate.  Now everytime I try to use Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) to connect into my work PC (with Windows Ultimate 7 32-bit) the RDC window will freeze after a new seconds of use.  If I wait approx 3 minutes the RDC window will unfreeze for a few seconds before freezing again.  If I minimize the RDC window on my home PC, I can continue to work because it's only the RDC window that is frozen.  Here is everything I've tried already that has not helped:
    1. Trying reducing the home PC screen resolution
    2. Downloaded the latest 64-bit driver from NVIDIA for the GTX 260 graphics card
    3. Taken my home PC to work to test behind the company's firewall--doesn't help
    4. Disabled Window Auto Tuning (suggestion from this website)
    5. Called Dell support--they tried for about an hour to help but couldn't; thier suggestion was to order Windows 7 32-bit version OS and install it
    6. Tried running the 32-bit version of mstsc.exe - no help
    7. Using MSCOMFIG, disabled all Startup items - no help
I have another home PC running Windows XP, it works perfectly using RDC to connect to my work PC.  Also, I have no problem at all using RDC from my work PC back into my home PC (the other direction).
Here may be a clue:  if I start up my new Dell Windows 64-bit OS in Safe Mode, the RDC session does not freeze.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    Hi,
Since it works in Safe Mode, I suspect this should be related to some conflicts, please try the methods in the following Knowledge Base article to have a check:
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
In addition, please also ensure the NIC drivers on all of the computers are up-to-date.
    Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • Problem with Desktop Skype freezing, please help

2 days ago, Dec. 23rd, I started up Skype as usual, but after about a minute, it froze, soon becoming "not responding". I opened Task Manager to try to end it manually, but Task Manager quickly became "not responding" as well, as did Chrome when I opened it when I tried to search for a solution. This had never happened before, and since has only happened when I am trying to use Skype for Desktop. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times, switching to an older version, and running an antivirus scan to see if a virus might be causing the problem, but none of this helped, and it still freezes itself along with all my other programs, forcing me to restart my computer if I want to be able to use it. I have been using Windows 8 Skype instead today, with no problems, but Skype for Desktop is more convenient for me, and I would very much appreciate it if someone would please help me.
Also, I don't know if this might be related to the problem, but today I had Task Manager open before starting Skype for Desktop, hoping I could end it before it caused everything to freeze (I couldn't), I was able to see before it froze that Skype was using 100% of my Disk.

  • Changes to desktop effects freezes the screen

Recently I installed Arch linux and Kde for the WM.
I am currently using "KDE Platform Version 4.5.1 (KDE 4.5.1)"
The desktop effects "composting" works but everytime I make a small change to any of the settings the screen freezes for an idefinite amount of time! and when this happens I have to do ctrl+alt+F1 and go to the command line and kill X and then re-enable composting !
Can anyone tell me why this is happening? what should I do to rectify this?
I am having an Intel onboard G41 chipset.
    I installed "xf86-video-intel" driver.

I was referring to the problem you reported "the screen freezes for an idefinite amount".

  • Paralles desktop ..freezing ..!??

HI .. At the store where i got my new mac they installed Vista on parallels desktop. But since that day every time i tried to open vista it either freezes the mac for 2-3 minutes or it takes for ever to load vista . To me it seems like somthing wrong ,i don't think this is the way vista should run by freezing the whole system . dos anyone have the same problem ? or do i need to take it back to the store ? or is this normal ? i don't think it normal cos even when vista (if it run) runs it dos not work normal and its really slow .. can anyone explain what should i do to fix it ? thank you taking the to read this ..

    foamtech wrote:
.so i need to change the paralles setting from 1 GB to 512 and that should help for now
    Yes
..but once i get the 2 (2GB) RAM then do i keep it at 512 form the peralles or do i need to change it again ?
That is up to you. It depends on what kinds of programs you run under Windows. Most things work fine in 512.
if so to what do i change it ..? to 1 GB again ,
If you need to, Yes. Try it and see if it runs any better.
?would it be still slow if i upgrade it ?
Memory upgrades should only make the machine run faster.
can i run Mac program with Paralles at the same time ?
Yes. You just want to avoid running more programs than you have physical RAM to support. It will always work, but it will get very slow if you run out of RAM.
do u thing i need to get those RAM's from apple or can i buy them at a comuter store ? thanks
    Either place.

  • MacBook Pro OS X 10.5.8 desktop background freezing, icons inaccessible

I have a late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro. For the past few months, the background has been freezing, but recently it has been much more frequently. All applications seem to work fine, even the dock is accessible, but any thing that I have on the desktop that isn't in the dock does not respond. Often one of the icons is highlighted when it's frozen, but I am not able to click on any other icons and highlight them. When I click and drag, the translucent box still appears, but I am still unable to select--or deselect--any of the icons. Not as often, some of the icons will disappear when it freezes, or if I save something to the desktop, the icon does not show up--this is what usually leads me to realizing that it is frozen. The only way to fix it has been to restart the computer.
Has anyone else had this problem, or have any idea as to what the problem could be?
    Thanks

  • HP Pavilion p6670t desktop randomly freezing with distortion to monitor (suspect hardware issues)

    HP Pavilion p6670t desktop
    Intel Core i3 550
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Intel HD graphics
I get random freezing on my computer with distortion to the screen (some of the colors look off, and I see thick purple vertical lines).
I'm not running any labor intensive processes (sometimes not even doing anything when it freezes). The temperatures are cool.
    No BSOD.
I ran HP's hardware diagnostics tools, and everything passed. Ran Memtest on each individual stick and all together, and they all passed as well.
I suspect video hardware problems, but since it is integrated with my mainboard, I was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions before I go out and buy new hardware.
    Thanks!

when the blue screen comes up next time, write down any error codes (long string of numbers) this will give you an idea on what the problem could be. write them down and either come back here or google the code... it sounds like hardware failing... could be your hard drive or maybe ram failing. one thing you can do is open it up and make sure you remove all the dust and lint from the inside and you can re-seat your ram chips along with checking your Hard Drive cable/ribbon

  • Installed Lion, change wallpaper, "desktop & screensaver" freeze, force quit, then "system preferences" freeze and need force quit every time

After Lion install, tried to change wallpaper in "system preferences"->"desktop & screensaver" appeared but immediatly freeze, so force quit.
Then System preference pane as it immediatly freezes if I try to open it.  Have to "force quit" each time.
Found many people have the exact issue and highly likely it's the bug of lion.
    Anybody found a solution?  Thx.

It has to do with a problem accessing the images on the home>images folder. To solve it, just move its content (iphoto library included) to another place. Then, restart System Preferences. Moving your iPhoto library to another location seems to fix the problem. I am sure Apple will issue an update to correct this problem. But, for now this seems to work for me.

  • Mac desktop is freezing, crashing, auto logging out

While playing a game last night my computer crashed the app and the computer automatically logged out. Ever since that, whenever I try to log on to any account it freezes and logs out immediately. When i safe boot it everything works, but it says all of the games I usually play, can't be run due to not sufficient specs. I tried a pvram reset and repaired my disk even though I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I'm running out of ideas and thought id post something here before taking it into an apple store. It's currently running on 10.9.3, and it's a late 2013 model, 27 inch. Any suggestions are helpful at this point! Thanks

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
