Desktop can't be modified, must authenticate error

Hi, I am having issues with trying add files to my desktop, I have tried to repair my permissions to fix the issue and have tried looking online but nothing is making sense. Please Help.
Thanks

Click on the desktop, choose Get Info from the File menu, and give yourself Read & Write access in the Sharing & Permissions section. This may require clicking the padlock and providing an administrator password.

  • Moving items generates "cannot be modified...must authenticate" message

My mom has a new MacBook Pro running 10.4.11, and she is getting these annoying "cannot be modified...must authenticate" messages when she tries to move files off her desktop into other folders, or into the trash. I have tried the following:
    1. repaired permissions (it repaired a few issues)
    2. checked permissions on desktop (she had read and write access, and it wasn't locked)
    3. checked permissions on the destination folder (ditto)
    4. ran Keychain First Aid (no problems found)
    5. searched the discussion forums for similar issues, but found no solutions
I'm stumped as to what's causing this. It doesn't stop her from working, as she can authenticate to complete the action, but it's a major irritant for her. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this for her?
    Thanks!

That message usually means a permissions issue. Have you checked the permissions on the files, in addition to the folders? You can have permissions for the folder, but if you don't have permissions to change a file, you will get an error when you try to do so (such as trying to copy over it).

  • Desktop Manager "disconnected" and I can't get rid of the error message

I just purchased a Blackberry Curve 8530, running v5 software, my computer is Windows 7. I installed the 501_b073_multilanguage software that I downloaded from Blackberry's website. When I launch the Desktop manager I get this message: "Before you begin, verify that your current BlackBerry device is connected to your computer." The troubleshooting posts I've seen on this forum include many tips (the ones I've tried are below). One in particular I can't do is "The desktop manager is showing "disabled."
-Make sure that the user has gone into the desktop manager and selected options > connection settings > detect."
... because I can't get rid of the error message dialoge box, and I can't click on the options menu in the BB Desktop Manager.
    I have tried the following:
uninstalled it and reinstalled it twice - 2nd uninstall was a "hard" uninstall where I deleted the registry files by hand
moved the cable to the USB port in the back (after trying both the ports in the front) of the computer
    restarted the computer many times
hard booted the phone by removing the battery
plugged in, removed, and replugged in the phone.
    Also:
The phone is installing correctly when I plug it in, but the software still doesn't seem to see it.
In the Device Manager, the BlackBerry is showing up under Portable Devices. Double-clicking on it gives me the reassurring "This device is working properly." message.
The Com1 port is working properly also, according to the Device Manager.
Double-clicking on the device manager icon to get the properties shows that the Com1 port is "disconnected" -- when I try to configure it it just pops back to the disconnected state.
If someone has an idea or something I haven't tried I'd sure appreciate it!!
    Thanks!

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Okay, folks, after a 3 1/2 hour phone call with a (very patient) telephone support person at Blackberry, here's what I learned.
You can check your USB drivers this way:
Plug in your phone into your USB drive. Assuming your Blackberry is "seen" by your computer...
Go into the Device Manager on your computer (control panel)
Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers item on the bottom of the list
Right-click on BlackBerry Smartphone and choose Properties
    Click on the Driver tab
Click on the Driver Details button
You should see one driver. I saw two. The one the BlackBerry likes is the RimUsb one.
So here's what NOT to do: We tossed the entire driver that was the "extra". This effectively made using my mouse and keyboard impossible, as they are USB, and sent my poor husband into the basement to find a million-year-old keyboard (and then a mouse) with the old fashioned kind of connectors (PS2). Bleh. Don't do that.
Here's what I did that worked (not saything this will work for you -- this modifies the Registry so better do a system backup with that backup and restore if you're nervous about this sort of thing):
From the start menu, choose run, and type regedit to get into the Registry editor.
Follow this file path: Computer, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CurrentControlSet, Control, Class
    Click on: {36FCE60-C465-11CF-8056-4445535400000}
If there's an item on the right called "UpperFilters", delete it. (see pictures)
    Hope this helps someone.

  • Following error message 'The item "iPhoto Library" can't be moved because "10.0.1.3" can't be modified' pops up, when I'm trying to copy my iPhoto library to my  Synology NAS. Any thoughts what I need to do in order to succeed?

Following error message 'The item “iPhoto Library” can’t be moved because “10.0.1.3” can’t be modified' pops up, when I'm trying to copy my iPhoto library to my  Synology NAS. Any thoughts what I need to do in order to succeed?

Would you rather recomment me to change to another programme like to iphoto to store and work with my photos?
I would use the NAS for documents and other data that do not need a library with database files inside. For iPhoto a small portable drive that you can plug in directly would be perfect; you can get one for 79$ http://mac-portable-hard-drive-review.toptenreviews.com/western-digital-review.h tml
Before you try to copy your iPhoto library anywhere, make sure it does not have any inconsistencies, that could prevent copying. Run a rebuild, using the First Aid tools. See this post by Old Toad on how to do it: Re: iPhoto version 8.1.2
The item “iPhoto Library” can’t be moved because “10.0.1.3”
That error message is very typical for copying between incompatible file systems. I get this error message usually when I try to move iPhoto libraries or Aperture libraries to drives with MS Dos (FAT) or unix formatting, or when some of the image files inside the library contain ethnic characters (Umlaute), have very long file names, or the filenames contain other special characters.
Do you have any other large data sets that you could try to move to your NAS instead of your iPhoto library?  Movies, Music? Then move these first to have enough working space, when you try to move the iPhoto library. If you are running out of space, it will be difficult for the OS to move large amounts of data at once. That will need working space.

  • TM error:  can't be modified or deleted because it's required by Mac OS X.

I found the TM didn't restore 2 folders which are most important after I reinstall my OS.
namely, the "applications" and "user" folders.
which appeared the "xxxx" can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by Mac OS X error message.
therefore, all my past applications are not restored after the reinstallation.
    what happened?

it's strange that those things were not transferred in the first place. they should have. this might indicated that there is a problem with your backup. when you are attempting to restore applications by hand don't restore the whole Applications folder. the message you got indicates that this is what you were doing. restore only the apps themselves. also, you can do it ONLY with applications that were installed by drag and drop into the Applications folder. if an application was installed using an installer you can not restore it this way and should reinstall it from scratch.
what exactly in the user folder are you trying to restore? some folders in your home directory are protected by deny delete ACLs and can not be restored like this. this includes your whole home directory, and all the default folders on it's top level. but you can restore files and folders inside those and any files and folders you created yourself.

  • How Can I Fix A QuickTime Codec Error?

How Can I Fix A QuickTime Codec Error?
I have several movies from 2008 that are labeled as .mov but I now get a QuickTime error saying "The document "XXXXXX" could not be opened. A required Codec isn't available."
These movies ran in QuickTime just fine until about a month ago.
All the folders in which these movies were stored in 4 folders in 2 folders in one folder. All folders at each level were encrypted with Stuffit Deluxe a version circa 2008 and decrypted with a newer Stuffit Deluxe 10.x. Other movies that are NOT .mov and in with the .mov movies still run.
If I click on the Thumbnail Preview "It" runs.
    How can I fix this?
TOP image is the Error message.
BOTTOM image is the Thumbnail Preview info.
I've checked out "Tell Me More" and have not found a solution.

How Can I Fix A QuickTime Codec Error?
The basic work flow is to determine which codecs were used to create the non-playing file and then check to see if these formats are supported by your current system codec component configuration.
If the files will open in one of the QT player app, the open the inspector window to see which codecs were used to create the original file as seen here...
or here in the "Format" entry...
Or, if you have QT 7 keyed for "Pro" use, you can open the "Properties" window to gain even more information as demonstrated here...
if you file will not open in either of the QT Player apps, then you can try opening the Finder "Get Info" window for the file,
use a third-party media player that will open the file, or
use a dedicated media information utility to learn this information....
Once you know what codecs were used to create the file, post back with this information so we can deterine if the file should be natively supported by your Mac OS X install, requires an Apple Pro editing codec normally installed by the editor app, or requires a third-party codec which the user must supply.
Your information does not indicate whether or not the files actually played on the current system or were transferred from a different system which was properly configured for playbac, whether or not you recently upgraded your operating system/modified your codec component configuration by adding or deleting any codecs, whether your compound "Stuffing" of the files created corruption, etc.
As to MOV files the selves, this extension just implies the data was placed in the QT generic file container and the actually data could be of any compression format thathat was compatible with the codec component configuration for the system on which the files were created and could include natively supported system codecs, pro editing codecs, and/or third-party proprietary or hybrid codecs. (I.e., this is why we may need more information regarding the individual non-playing files.)
If I click on the Thumbnail Preview "It" runs.
f you are referring to QuickLook (QL) then the technology is different than QuickTime (QT). In the former case, the system is playing representative data but not actually opening the file as QT does. Thus, there is always the possibility that the problem is in the file structure (atom) information. For instance, suppose someone merely changed the MOV file extension in the Finder rather than actually copying data to a real MOV file container. Then it is possible that the QT player app may be searching for a codec that is not supposed or expected to be supported in the MOV file container and, not finding it, issues the erroneous codec error message—especially since you did not inticate the source of the file you are trying to play or, in some cases, which QT player is now not playing the file.
In short, there are several possibilities here and not enough specific information.

  • Applications folder won't let me in - must authenticate!

Strange change. I can't create a new folder in the Applications folder. The menu item is grayed out. If I try to create a folder elsewhere and drag it over then I get a message that the Ap folder cannot be modified and I must authenticate.
I checked "info" and it indicates that I have read and write privileges, so it is not something to do with that. Any suggestions?

Hrm. In my case, it's just that multiple Get Info boxes didn't help. The permissions were set to Read Only and locked by the System, a novel occurence for me. I couldn't change 'em even though I'm the only user/admin of the computer...

  • Palm Desktop software - Fails to open with msg "Error: Failed to open Address Book database"

In July 2009 I dropped my trusty Visor on a tile floor and it stopped working.  So, in the meantime I have been using only the Palm Desktop software.
Just yesterday, when I attempted to launch the Palm Desktop software, it failed with the message “Error: Failed to open Address Book database”.  I think this error was caused by a very ungraceful shut-down of my Win XP system yesterday.
I really do need to use the Palm Desktop software for my address list, calendar, and memo.  The problem is that the error with the Address Book database seems to be preventing the Palm Desktop software from initializing.
I am using Palm Desktop 4.0.1 on Windows XP SP3.  I do NOT  have an export file of the Palm address book or other databases.  However, I do have five levels of backup history on my external Maxgor backup drive.
Specifically, on my current c drive I have files in the directory:
    C:\Program Files\Handspring\WR\address
address.bak                  5/16/2009   (from last sync before I broke Visor)
                address.dat                   5/24/2011
                Personal.ABA                11/6/2008
                Unfiled.ABA                   3/28/2008
On my most recent backup of my system, there are the following files:
address.bak                 5/16/2009   (from last sync before I broke Visor)
                            address.dat                  5/12/2011
                            Personal.ABA              11/6/2008
                            Unfiled.ABA                  3/28/2008
I have not listed the four older backup versions.
I haven’t tried any corrective measures yet (I don’t want to make matters worse) and am hoping that someone can guide me along the right path.
Is it possible for me to just rename the “current” address.dat file to something like address.SAV and then copy the Address.dat file file with date of 5/12/2011 into the current directory.  Will the software then just use the older version of the data, or must I do something else.
I am grateful for any assistance.  Thank you very much.

Thanks for the speedy response.  However, I read the article for which you provided the link, and I hve also read many other articles that I found via search, but I don't think these will help me.  All of these articles seem to assume that (1) you have a handheld to which you can sync and thereby rebuild the database on the PC, or (2) you have a backup that you created via the Palm Desktop export function.  Unfortunately, I have neither and so I don't think any of these solutions will work for me.
I did read with great interest an article that stated that recent versions of Palm Desktop have a built-in function that will repair a corrupted Datebook database.  Will this also fix a corrupted Address Book database which is my problem?
So, I downloaded and attempted to install the latest version of Palm Desktop.  I was careful to read the instructions that stated NOT to uninstall my current version of Palm Desktop, but to just install the latest version on top of my current Palm Desktop.  However, when I attempted to do the installation, the installer software said it could not install on top of my current software and that I should first uninstall my current software.
    I have some questions now:
    (1) If I uninstall my current version of Palm Desktop, will this destroy my Address Book, Datebook, and Memo databases ( I don't care about the ToDo database)?  If so, what can I do to preserve those databases?
    (2) Is there really a function built in the recent versions of Palm Desktop that will fix a corrupted database?  Is this an "automatic" function that will detect and fix a broken database or is this something I will have to invoke?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Time Capsule Can't Be Modified

I recently decided to stop using Time Machine to do all my backups because there didn't seem to be a way to see everything a folder has ever had (if I wanted to see all my music at once, for instance).
So, I decided to stop Time Machine and start to manually copy folders over to my TC but I am getting the error message that it "can't be modified." I have changed my share settings to no one being able to access the disk, and at the top of the screen I am clearly logged in as myself and not a guest so I should have full access. Anyone know what I could be missing? Thanks!

I'm not sure what you mean by that. The "Star Wars" display shows a "snapshot" of the way your entire Mac looked at the time of any backup.

It sounds like you're trying to copy data into your backups (ie, into the +sparse bundle+ they're in); and no, you can't do that. They have a very intricate structure that can only be modified by Time Machine.
If you want to discontinue Time Machine entirely, and erase all your backups, use +*Airport Utility.+* Select your Time Capsule, then +*Manual Set-Up,+* then Disks in the tool Bar, then the Disks tab below it, then Erase. The "Quick Erase" option will only take a moment. Then you can drag whatever you want onto it.
If you want to put other things on the TC's internal HD, in addition to your backups, see #Q3 in [Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/TimeCapsule.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Capsule+ forum).

i have been exporting lightroom web galleries to my iweb site without any problem.  Suddenly I get the error message "finder can't complete the operation because some data can't be read or written" - error code -36 - and the move to the sites folder on my idisk fails..... thoughts?

Try this community: MobileMe on my Mac: MobileMe: Apple Support Communities.
And you can continue to use iWeb for some time to come. The following will explain:
It's now confirmed that iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
In addition the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on.
HOWEVER, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still currently available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those copies still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD.

    Hi,
Thanks for replying; I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. I recall using firewire to connect my iPod to my G4 Powerbook back in '03-'04. Unfortunately, I lost the original cables after two moves (I'm in the military), so I bought the ReTrak cables which included both USB 2.0 and FW. My FW port is fine because I have a 300 GB FW external hard drive attached to my iMac, and it works. What's strange is that before I tried to update it, the iPod worked fine when connected via USB 2.0. Once I tried updating it, the update froze up and my iPod displayed an . As explained in my first post, I've exhausted all efforts to get this thing working again. I appreciate everyone's responses. Fourth, please let me know if you find any fixes.
