Desktop computer runs hot

I have a HP Pavillion desktop running windows 7. It's a pc and monitor in one. My computer is running hot. I vacummed the vents then used a cotton swab to clean the outside of the vents and I also am using a seperate fan to blow cool air on it. Is there a way that I can take the back off and clean with a can of suppressed air?

  • I have a macbook pro 10.6.8 system.  My hard drive was replaced under warranty.  Since then, my computer runs hot. The original hard drive never ran hot.  What would cause the new hard drive to run hot?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.8, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7,  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3.  This is my first computer so don't know anything about trouble shooting.  A week before the warranty expired, I took my computer to Apple to be checked.  I was told that my hard drive was bad and they replaced the hard drive.  Since then, my computer runs hot most of the time and the fan is constantly coming on, which is good  My computer rarely ran hot with the original hard drive.  What would be causing this?

    racergirl,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that makes a difference with the heat?

  • Can't get 4050n printer to work with new Desktop Computer: running XP

I have a new Desktop Computer, dual processor, which is running XP and MS office 2007.  I had my 4050N HP Laserwriter hooked up to my old desktop (which failed in the last two weeks, blown capacitor, etc) and it worked fine with XP on that computer.
So I downloaded the drivers I found for HP 4050N running XP, and can't even get a test page.  The connectors seem to be ok.  I had to buy a parallel port to USB cable and I have that plugged into the USB port at the back of my new desktop.
Any ideas of what else I should try?  If I had a computer virus with the old machine, could it have affected my printer somehow?
    I'm at a loss.
    Thanks!

Since you mention doing an upgrade I would be inclined to reset the printing system and then add the R2880 queue again.
Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
Move your mouse over the Printers list
Hold down the Control button and click the mouse
Click the "Reset printing system ..." popup
    Restart your Mac
This will remove your print queues but not your printer drivers. So you will only need to add your printer queues again.

  • Would a bad battery make my computer run hot

Hello community. So I have posted before about this issue but without a fix. After updating to Mavericks, my macbookpro started saying I had battery issues and then the computer started running super hot. The battery has officially failed, it just doesnt even hold a charge anymore. Would a bad battery cause the computer to run hot?

    Certainly.
Replace it before a little problem becomes a big one. Have Apple do it. Avoid cheap third party alternatives.

  • Computer runs hot 82-90C

Is there any way to control the fans on my X61 laptop? My computer runs extremely hot and is not comfortable to sit on my legs/lap since it is so hot.

I have another related issue now I'm afraid.  The T7500 cpu often reveals that it's running at a fraction of its 2.20GHz capacity.  The computer will be sluggish and when I check, sure enough, it's running as though it were a single core unit around 800MHz.
you probably aren't running any applications that fully tax the processor and bring it out of power-save mode.   try running cinebench's multi-processor rendering test while monitoring core speed using cpu-z.
also, make sure your CPU is fully enabled.   boot into the BIOS by pressing the F1 key at startup, then go to Config > CPU > Core Multi-Processing and make sure it is set to "Enabled".

  • Computer runs hot

Several months ago, we bought two HP pavilion laptops.  One runs fine.  The other runs really hot - must use an external fan and runs very slow when gaming.  This is causing a lot of frustration for its 15 year old user.  Any suggestions

  • How long does it take to boot up a desktop computer running a sata enclosed macbook pro removed harddrive?

I've connected my Sata enclosed 250 gb MacBook pro hard drive that I had removed from my laptop to a school iMac. It's been almost 15 minutes since I selected the Orange hard drive that is mine from the list of available while holding option. Wondering how long to wait for this computer to boot up running my external hard drive before I give up or try again. There were two orange hard drives available when I connected my Sata, one of which was a backup....

Well, as for the OS versions, it should work since the iMac is on ML and the external has Mavericks.
I don't want to tell you that powering off will not corrupt anything as it could, so at this point, it'd be at your own risk. But, if it is not responding at all, there isn't much else you can do. If you power off, let it go for a couple of minutes and then try to boot into the iMac OS (unplug your external, then plug it back in after booting up); then go to System Preferences > Startup Disk > and try the external one more time.
There is one other possibility I just thought of: you said it's a school iMac? Do they allow installs/booting from other sources or do they have them set up so you only have a regular user account (rather than an admin) which means you can't do any administrative stuff?

  • My windows 8 pc can not find my printer plugged into my airport extreme. My mac and desktop computer running win 7 can. Help.

i can print from my win 7 and macbook air. however when running bonjour printer wizard on win 8 laptop, my printer does not show up on the list.

Thanks. It turns out that since I had received this printer as a cast-off from the office, it was still config'd with the old IP info. Once I set it for remote configuration (enabling something called "BOOTP" in the TCP/IP config sub-menu), I printed off the status page to find that all the addresses (IP, subnet, gateway) were "unspecified" with 0.0.0.0 values. But when I went back into the printer config menu, disabled BOOTP, and looked at the IP address, I saw that the printer had rec'd a new IP address (10.0.1.5) from the AEBS, I presume (I confess that I am by no means an experienced networker). I reprinted the status page to confirm the 10.0.1.5 IP, then I used that IP to install the printer on the PC via the method you suggested and everything works fine, thanks! One concern for future use, though. Is it possible that if the printer, AEBS, or PC are powered off and restarted, that the IP address of the printer will be changed by the AEBS and I will be unable to print to it? Since IP assignment by the AEBS is dynamic (right?), will this affect future printing? Something to do with DHCP renewal?

  • HP desktop computer can not play Blu-ray DVDs. Who is responsible for this?

In 2010, I blought an HP Pavilion Elite HPE 250-f desktop computer (running Windows 7). This computer was advertised as having a Blu-ray DVD player, as well as players for regular DVDs and CDs. All these years, I've been successfully playing regular DVDs and CDs. Until now, I have not attempted to play a Blu-ray DVD.
I recently rented the "Divergent" Blu-ray DVD (as well as the "Divergent" regular DVD) from my local library. When I tried to play the Blu-ray DVD, the HP MediaSmart software and the Windows Media Player detected the Blu-ray but were not able to play the Blu-ray.
I then downloaded the Media Player Codec Pack, http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10749065.html    This Codec Pack was supposed to help Windows Media Player play the Blu-ray. That did not work. When I got rid of the Codec Pack using System Restore, HP MediaSmart and Windows Media Player became unable to detect the Blu-ray in the Blu-ray drive. After another System Restore, HP MediaSmart and Windows Media Player were once again able to detect the Blu-ray (but were still unable to play the Blu-ray).
I then downloaded Cyberlink PowerDVD 14, which played the Blu-ray for only about 7 seconds before crashing. I then got rid of Cyberlink PowerDVD 14 with a System Restore.
I downloaded TotalMedia Theatre version 6.0.1.123. However, this software did not detect the Blu-ray. I then got rid of TotalMedia Theatre with a System Restore. After that, I was not able to play ANYTHING, including CDs and regular DVDs. CDs and regular DVDs were not being detected by playing software. After another System Restore, I was once again able to play CDs and regular DVDs. However, I do not want to risk trying to play the Blu-ray again.
So, what's going on here? HP advertised this computer as having a Blu-ray DVD player. Wasn't HP responsible for providing software that could play Blu-ray DVDs? And why is the Blu-ray DVD, sometimes detected, and sometimes not detected, by playing software? Is there some kind of hardware issue?
Who is responsible for the fact that my computer can not play Blu-ray DVDs? HP, for bad playing software and/or bad hardware? Or is there something in the Windows 7 operating system that prevents the playing of Blu-ray DVDs? Is Microsoft responsible?
    Thanks for any information.

You're not going to get any help from HP or Microsoft on a 4 year old computer.   Maybe your optical drive is no longer able to play Bluray discs.  Windows 7 Media Center with Bluray playback was not included in all versions of Windows 7.  Each computer with Bluray has an individual license; yours may have expired after not using it for 4 years.  Best advice - don't flog a dead horse.  Just get regular DVDs.

  • Cannot connect to wifi on desktop computer w/ Windows Vista

So as stated above, I cannot connect to the Airport Extreme wifi with my Sony Vaio desktop computer. My iMac, iPhone, PS Vita, and all other device can connect to it easily, but when trying to connect to the internet using my Sony Vaio desktop, I cannot. At first it showed up on the list of available connections, but then after calling TWC, they did something and it let it connect to the internet "with limited access". But after my father tinkered with it to try and give the computer full access, it cannot connect again.
In short: My Sony Vaio desktop computer running Windows Vista cannot connect to my Airport Extreme. So could anyone please help?

Did you try plugging in by ethernet?? Just to be sure there wasn't some fundamental issue.
If it works by ethernet and not wireless, then this is not at all unusual. Vista has the worst wireless drivers ever developed along with the worst wireless management.. an upgrade to XP or Win7 is strongly encouraged. .either direction is an upgrade.
Make sure the AE has all SMB compatible names..
Short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Do not use apple names with spaces and apostrophe.
Use wpa2 Personal security with a password of 10-20 characters again pure alphanumeric.
Use fixed wireless channels, try 1, 6, 11 in turn.
No improvement download the latest intel drivers (or whatever wireless card your laptop uses) direct from Intel. If that doesn't work try some earlier releases.. not always the latest is bestest.

  • Extension "Post-it Digital Notes 5.3.0.0002" auto-installed on laptop computer's Firefox; but I cannot locate extension on desktop computer.

After installing 3M's Post-It Digital notes on a laptop running Windows 7 64, there was an automatic installation of the extension "Post-it Digital Notes 5.3.0.0002" on Firefox.
Yet on my desktop computer running same operating system, I cannot locate that extension within the "Add-Ons," etc. on Firefox.

Thank you for the clarification. If you aren't able to get the extension installed on both computers, using that same technique, perhaps 3M can explain why it is missing.

  • PowerBook runs HOT with iPhone connected

Has anyone else observed their computer running hot (fans rev up real fast!) while their iPhone is connected? I'm still waiting for "the new at&t" to get my activation unclogged, so maybe it's just because my iPhone is still in a pre-activated mode, but whenever I connect it to my 12" PowerBook G4, the computer starts heating up and revving its fans like it is working REALLY HARD. A check of the Activity Monitor shows that the CPU is below 10% and there are no unusual messages flooding the console.log or system.log ...
    Anyone else seeing this?

Yes, my PowerBook revs up even when both it and the iPhone are idle (screenlocked even-- the iPhone not the PowerBook!)
But you have a point.. maybe the problem has something to do with the PowerBook's power management chip. I'll try following Apple's PMU reset procedure tonight when I get home. While I'm at it, I'll try an Open Firmware reset too.
    I'll post my findings..
Thanks everyone for your help on this!
My fiancee's iPhone connects to her 1.25 GHz 12" PB
without the rev-up problem most of the time. But it
does rev up when it's doing anything remotely
computationally intensive, like resizing photos. If
yours is doing that just from being connected, that
is strange. What is the internal temperature of the
PB? (There are some programs and dashboard widgets
that will tell you, I think - not sure what
thermometers the 12" PB has.) Maybe you have a vent
    blocked or something.
This might be becoming a question for the 12" PB
messageboard - maybe it's a general problem with
high-drain USB devices on some models?
Have you tried hooking up the iPhone through a
powered USB hub? That would perhaps isolate if it's
a current-drain issue. Maybe this is a symptom of
other power-supply problems with the PB.
