Desktop contents in the target disk mode

In previous uses of "target disk mode" the contents of the desktop of the target disk have appeared on the desktop of the master machine.
But with this new 10.4 being the master and my old ibook OS9.2.2 i don't see any of those files. And when I open the desktop folder listed in the finder of the 10.4 machine it is blank.
Is there any way I can move the contents of that folder to the 10.4 machine?

In Mac OS X, open (double-click) the iBook's drive icon on the desktop: the iBook's drive will display a FireWire icon since the iBook is in FireWire Target Disk Mode (the iBook is the Target computer). The iBook's drive will open in a Finder window. The Desktop Folder in that Finder window is the Mac OS 9 desktop of your iBook. Open that folder, then drag and drop files from it to your the desktop on the Mac OS X (Host) computer.

How does one prevent a folder's contents from being read while running in target disk mode?

I want to prevent a folder's contents from being seen or used by a second computer that is connected to my iMac when it is running in the firewire
target disk mode. Whenever I put my iMac into the Target Disk Mode all of its disk contents, for all users on its disk, can be seen and used by the second computer without needing any passwords. Does anyone know of a simple way, short of using FileVault, for protecting folder contents when viewed while running in the target disk mode? I would like to protect the entire contents of my "Documents" folder from being viewed by anyone that connects to my iMac via the firewire target disk mode.

Many users make a password protected Disk Image using Disk Utility to keep selected files protected. I have one such image myself that I keep on my Desktop containing passwords and such. I'm not sure if you could put the entire contents of your Documents folder into a secure disk image but you could certainly make one and put your most sensitive items in it within your Documents folder.
I agree with you for not wanting to use FileVault. I've never used it myself and am very leery of it due to things I've read from other users.

I cannot see all the data in target disk mode

I have an issue where my MacBook pro is not booting into the Yosemite. I see the progress bar hangs at about 45% on the startup screen. I called Apple support and they asked to use the target disk mode to connect to my mac and then copy data like that. I am using the same technique but I am not seeing all the data under users. My data under the folder users had another users data that I cannot see.
How can I see my data for all the other users? Help please!!!

Could be that the the data or directors on the HD are corrupted.
- Copy all data you can
- Try cloning the whole disk to another disk before you attempt recovery methods.
- Try repairing the HD via Disk Utility
- Try a data recovery program

Target Disk Mode Stuck on FireWire logo

Hi guys,
I have been having major issues with my MacBook Pro that I bought in late 2009. It suddenly crashed one day and did not boot ever since. The white screen with the apple logo and the spinning thingy in the bottom was all I could see I can see. I wanted to at least recover my data before I handed it in to the Apple Store for repair. I managed to connect the MBP to my iMac through the Target Disk Mode using a FireWire 800 cable. It transferred about 40% of the content of my MBP onto my iMac and then suddenly started hanging. The FireWire logo on my MBP stopped moving ever since. The folder of my MBP HD appears on m iMac but when I try to open it the iMac hangs. Tried every possible startup trick including Option-Command PR and a bunch of other stuff and nothing has worked. I really want to recover all my files. I don't have the CDs my MBP came with. Please help! :(

If the MBP gets into Target Mode, at least the logic board isn't fried. But the HDD may be damaged and be the cause of your woes. Once it is connected to the iMac and the MBP's volume appears on the desktop, have you tried repairing it with the iMac's Disk Utility or even stronger stuff like DiskWarrior?
When that gets sorted out, either cause the disk was repairable or you had to put in a new one, you will have to purchase a boxed version of Snow Leopard to reinstall since you don't have the MBP's install DVDs.

Is it possible to store a back up on external HD by transfering files using Target Disk Mode?

Dear Apple community,
There's absolutely no way that I'm going to be able to fix my MBP without a clean install. I simply cannot log in and get to my desktop screen after upgrading to Mavericks. So I will have to erase everything and perform a clean install. However, before proceeding with this plan, I'll have to back up my files from my MPB since I cannot use my mac normally, I'll have to back up my files using the Target Disk Mode. I've connected my MPB to another MPB in the past, so I know how the process work. But this time around I won't be able to use another MBP but a MB. I have a few doubts regarding the process especially in what concernd adding an external HD to this equation. So please bear with me and see if you can answer my doubts.
So this is the equipment I'll be working with: my MPB, my friends MacBook (2008) and my 1TB external hard drive.
My basic question is: once I connect my MPB in Target Disk Mode to the MB, I'm sure I'd be able to transfer my files to this MB. But let's say that I don't want to leave my files in this MB (after all it's not my computer) and want to send my files straight to an external HD connected to this MB. Is it possible? If positive, I know that the only FireWire port in the MB is a 400 port. That means my MBP will be connect to the MB using the only FireWire port available in the MB. So I believe that my external HD would have to be connected to the MB with the help of an USB cable. I assume that this will make the transferring process a little slower than if I could count solely on FireWire ports. Slowing the process down is not a problem but could this corrupt any of my files during the transferring process or even damage anything? I assume that would never happen after all it's just digital data, but better safe than sorry, right? What do you think?
Another thought that occurred to me is: let's say I connect my MBP to the MB using the FireWire 400. I'd still have an FireWire 800 port available on my MBP. If I connect my external HD to my MBP (yeah, the one that will be in Target Disk Mode) using that FW 800 port, would my MBP allow this external HD to mount as if it was just another folder/drive in my computer? If positive, theoretically I'd be able to transfer files from my MBP to my external HD manually (by dragging files from folder to folders), right?
I really don't want to transfer my files from the MBP to the MB and then from MB to external HD. That would just take time and I really don't know how much available space I'll find on my friend's MB.
Oh, one last question: when transferring files using Target Disk Mode, do all computers involved in this process gotta have the same OS X version installed or it doesn't matter if e.g one is running Snow Leopard and the other Mavericks?

Firewire/target disk mode

ok so long story... bear with me...
i have 2 macs and 1 sorta died so i connected the 2 and transferred all the documents i wanted to keep onto the good one via firewire and it all worked perfectly with the target disk mode and the hard drive came up on the desktop and i could get into all my documents and save them. Then, once i erased and re-installed the system on the old one and i connected the 2 computers again and did target disk mode on the good one, the one i saved refused to recognize the other computer... i think it was some sort of incompatibility issue? i don't know but it's really frustrating and i tried it 3 times already and restarted both computers mulitple times so i just hope someone can help me please

Instal OS 10.4 trough target disk mode

Hello, this is my first question here.
I am trying to install os 10.4 on a computer with no DVD player using the target disk mode as described in de apple website. I have connected a computer with DVD player in target mode to the computer with only te cd player, but only the hard disk of the computer in target disk mode appears on the desktop, not the DVD
Is the any way to get this to appear?

Make sure you are using the Tiger retail disc which looks like this picture
It doesn't always work right, and if you have trouble, I strongly recommend getting an external DVD drive that can boot Mac OS X such as those sold by http://www.macsales.com/ or http://www.lacie.com/ or get the Tiger Media Exchange program that gives you CD version on http://www.apple.com/befr/macosx/mediaexchange/

MBP 13" not starting, target disk mode not starting....

My gf's MBP 13" is not healthy, but before we can wipe it and start fresh, we need to get some files off it.
I've just tried the Target Disk Mode to my MBP 15"
Using firewire I hooked up to the powered 13",
Connected to my ON 15"
Turned on the 13" and held down T
The firewire logo and power logo appea and dance around the screen on the 13"
on the 15" nothing appears - not on the desktop or in finder.
I'm able to check the firewire port on the 15" is working, but I can't check the 13" as it's just not working right as a computer right now.
I've also attempted hooking the 13" inch up to a portable HD and then daisy chaining that to the 15" - HD showed up, but not the other computer.
HELP...

it looks to be a version of mountain lion or snow leopard from the logo that pops up under recovery mode.
FURTTHER - I was able to confirm that the firewire port on the 13" DOES work - in recovery I hooked up a portable harddrive, but there is no way to copy off the files in recovery it would appear.

Macbook in target disk mode locks up when trying to transfer files to another computer. Suggestions?

A week ago I installed snow leopard on my girlfriend's macbook without backing anything up. Dumb idea I know. The installation failed multiple times. I ran her computer in target disc mode to try to save what files I could. Now when I try to transfer files it will freeze up at different times. Sometimes I can transfer a huge amount of data like 4GB's and the other times it locks up trying to transfer 4kB's. I'm at my wits end trying to figure this out. I can see the files but can not transfer them.
Any suggestions or past similar past experiences?

Have you noticed when you plug the drive in whether its making any sounds? You can put your ear up to the drive on the Macbook. Its located on the right hand front sided of the top case.
Also, check to see if the target disk mode icon is moving after a few minutes. If the firewire icon has stopped moving it usually indicates that theres something seriously wrong (probably mechanical) with the drive.
Id definitely give Disk Warrior a try. Especially if you have a situation where you can hear the drive running or spin up but it doesn't make any sound after that. Hope this helps.

Mac Mini won't Boot after Target Disk Mode

We just bought a new iMac and used target disk mode via firewire from our older Mac Mini running OSX 10.4 to transfer data. Now when we go to restart the mini, the grey screen appears with apple logo and it seems to try to boot up but after a long time alway just ends up with a blue screen. I don't think I "ejected" the mini properly from the imac after the target disk mode transfer. Could the mini be stuck in target disk mode? I've tried to restart in different modes eg. safe mode, pram by holding down keys on start up but doesnt make a difference at all almost as if the keyboard isn't registering (and its a wired keyboard). Any ideas???

Mac won't startup after Target Disk Mode

Hello all, i recently purchased a G5 Imac and attempted the Target Disk Mode for transferring files from my old G4 PowerPC Quicksilver. It took a very long time to get the disk to mount itself during this process but when it was there i did all my transfers and when done, ejected the disk. Without the firewire attached i have now restarted the PowerPC model and was stuck on the blue screen of death after the usual startup. After doing some CMD+V, CMD+S, CMDOPT+OF, CMDOPT+PR i have now been apparently made it even worse because now it just sits on the gray screen with the Apple. I can't seem to find my original discs for the PowerPC but have the new ones that came with the G5 readily available but doubt they work due to the intel differences but i could be wrong....any help folks? Thank you kindly in advance

i've changed out the battery to no avail. I have always had a secondary HD in my case and i was able to find my disks that originally came with my mac and installed a fresh version of the OS on the secondary. Everything seems to work fine there except now i'm running on a system 7 years old and the auto-updates aren't giving me any options to move closer to today's technology. as far as my main HD, i believe it is dead and that is the problem from the get go so i assume that i'm screwed there and will have to start fresh with this secondary HD now my main.

Target Disk Mode with G4 PowerBook

This week I'm installing a new hard drive in my 2003 867Mhz PB. I plan to do a fresh install from the original CDs so I will have a computer clear of much data for a trip I'm going on next week. I will apply all updates to 10.4.11 to match my Mac Pro.
1. Can I install my '08 iLife apps onto my PowerBook? I'm the only user of both machines and normally I wouldn't care that the PB still has '06 since I rarely use it. However, the purpose of my trip is to take photos for five days. My PB doesn't meet the minimum requirements for Aperture. I want to start culling some of the photos on the trip so I won't have too many to import to Aperture when I return. Taking a bunch of DVDs isn't an option because the PB doesn't have a SuperDrive.
2. If I can install iPhoto '08, will Aperture see the PB's iPhoto Library in Target Disk Mode? If I can't install '08, will Aperture see the '06 iPhoto Library in Target Disk Mode? I will not be editing any photos in iPhoto on the PB - only viewing them to delete the bad out of the collection so I won't have to import a huge collection. Obviously iPhoto won't be running on either machine when I connect them in Target Disk Mode, so technically I won't have more than one copy in use at any time.
I have a wireless home network. I could set up file sharing on my PB to transfer the photos, but I think that would be much slower than using Target Disk Mode. Since I'm taking photos for my job, and knowing the schedule of events and shoot list, I'm estimating 10G of photos minimum. That's a lot of time with a pokey old PB for transferring. I won't be taking a Firewire hard drive because it's too bulky with all the other equipment considering that the 120G hard drive I'm installing in the PB won't have many apps. I also won't have internet access so I can't upload the photos to my iDisk.
3. Does anyone know if Target Disk Mode can be used with my PB when I upgrade my Mac Pro to Leopard? I'm not planning on installing Leopard on the PB (don't know if it meets the minimum requirements) because I don't see myself using the PB too often. By the time I need to be portable more frequently, I will buy a MBP. I hadn't turned the PB on for over a year until last week to make sure it still works for this trip. It would be more useful to buy an extra iPod to store photos than to buy Leopard for the PB.
Sorry if that seemed like a confusing bunch of questions. I tried searching the forums and Apple's support site and now I'm too exhausted to think too clearly. Thanks for any help or pointers.

I have to answer my own post as this question probably isn't allowed here. After installing the new hard drive I read the license agreement while waiting for the restore DVD to finish. I didn't bother with upgrading 10.2 which is what the PB had when new. I immediately installed Tiger and after it's done updating I'll see what software I need/want besides iWork. I'm sure Tiger isn't different in the license than Leopard. (So I'll have to plan on getting a new portable soon as I think the Target Disk Mode is faster for transferring unless I get another Firewire drive.)
But at least the new hard drive and maxed RAM has made my PB a bit more peppy. Or maybe I'm not remembering how slow it was because I haven't yet used it. I'm currently still waiting for Tiger to finish installing. I'll hold off a little longer before upgrading my Mac Pro to Leopard to find out if there are any network gotchas I should know about with my PowerBook. If I'd been using the PB, I'd know all these answers. I've just been so thrilled with my Mac Pro and 23" monitor that the PB hasn't had much appeal. But maybe I'll try to wring a little more life out of the PB.

Target Disk Mode error..?

Let me premise this quiestion by saying I am rather new with macs.. love em so far, but have been rasied on PC's..
anyways, I have an ibook G4 that someone gave to me because it had the flashing question mark on startup, I booted from install disk and ran disk utility to 'repair disk' and it gives me an 'Underlying task reported failure error -9972'..
So there are thousands of pictures I would like to retrieve from this ibook, So Im thinking using my new MacBook and doing a little target disk mode retrieval..
So I connect them together of course, I start the ibook by holding 'T', it goes into target disk mode (see the floating firewire icon).. but my MacBook just spits out this error: the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer..
Any and all help would be awesome! im hoping I can retrieve the data, but does it sound like a lost cause?..

Unfortunately this type of work is not covered by Protection Plan, and the cost is too high for me. The only thing I can do now is Initialize, and lose my files.
But before to do this procedure, I would like try another time the Target Disk Mode: I found this (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2528?viewlocale=en_US) in the Apple Site, perhaps is this the problema I had today?
And what about other type of files migration?

FYI: Corrupt hard drive will cause target disk mode to fail

I have just finished restoring my nephew's iBook which had had a major disk corruption issue - keys out of order, invalid key lengths, etc. in the catalog. While the iBook would boot, it had a lot of problems running due to the corrupt file system.
As part of the restoration process, I tried to connect the iBook in target disk mode, but had a lot of trouble. Apparently, bad file system data structures will cause the target disk mode to hang; I needed to disconnect the iBook from my main system to get out of the SPOD. In the end, I booted the iBook from the installation DVD and ran Disk Utility from there to reformat the hard drive. Surprisingly, it was impossible to reformat the drive in target disk mode due to the corruption.
Once the disk was reformatted, target disk mode worked fine, and I was able to restore the entire system (less files lost due to the corruption) in that mode.

It is impossible to say what can be recovered without knowing the cause of the installation failure. The possibilities range from some interfering third party addition to the previously installed OS to a substandard or degraded hardware component (especially RAM) that can't meet the more stringent demands of the new OS version.
All I can suggest is to try Target Disc Mode & see what you can recover to another drive -- one that your bother should have had for backups to begin with & should now see the value of having if he did not before.
If that doesn't work, the alternatives are investing in special data recovery software (moderately expensive) or a data recovery service (very, very expensive).

Clean install of OS Lion after Target disk mode transfer

Not sure if this is the right community to ask this in but if you could help me I'd appreciate it.
I have a iMac 5 1, duo core 2 duo with 3 1/2 gigs of RAM. I recently did a targe disk mode transfer of files and folders from my mac book laptop. Mostly because I wanted the software (Creative suite, capture one, etc ...) My computer has slowed down noticeably since then. But what worries me more is the possibility that as a result of the target disk mode I copied a lot of "junk", like .plists scripts that either don't work or don't need to be running, or junk on my local storage. I tried my best to clean off a lot of this stuff, and even did a repair disk permisions (there were a lot of permissions that needed to be repaired quite naturally). Well anyway I bought the 10.7.4 Lion upgrade from the app store. I'm wondering, would it benefit me to do a "clean" install either by partitioning my disk or using a bootable USB. Or an erase and install. Will doing either erase my software and will doing it clean out my HD at all.

Please note that your 3 GB of RAM is not going to result in a good experience with Lion as it is a bit of a memory hog and 4 GB is a realistic minimum.
As for copying your applications from one Mac to another: have you made sure that they are compatible? And, do they require more RAM than what you have? Using something like Creative Suite, I would suggest more than 4 GB RAM.
