"Desktop" Damaged or Incomplete?

My macbook pro is not letting me drag and drop files onto/ the Desktop.  I get a message saying: "You cannot open the application 'Desktop' because it is damaged or incomplete."  ??

By "item" I'm referring to the so-called Desktop folder.
Oh, I think I'm getting the picture. Are you trying to drag and drop something in the sidebar of the Finder? Or are you trying to drag and drop to the actual Desktop (what is the background on which you see your disk drive icon displayed?)
You need to fix permissions in your Home folder. This will require using the Terminal in your Utilities folder.
To fix Home folder permissions
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder.  At the command line prompt paste the following command line:
sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Press RETURN.  You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.

  • Does anyone know how I can retrieve this.  Somehow my cat moved ITunes to the middle of the desktop and I now get this message and cannot open it. You can't open the application iPhoto because it may be damaged or incomplete.

Does anyone know how I can solve this.  My cat managed to move iphoto tab to the middle of the screen and now I cannot open it and get this message.
You cannot open the application iphoto because it may be damaged or incomplete
    Any help appreciated

You need a more technically saavy cat, for a start.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • IPhoto may be damaged or incomplete

    Hi all,
I'm trying to finish a project for school (a video) that is due in two days (on Thursday), so I need help really soon. We had video taped everything we needed, I had all of the videos in iPhoto, so I deleted them off of my camera. After installing the new iLife '11, I started editing our video in iMovie, but I had only finished 30 seconds of it when Ihad to go to bed. Then today, when I turned my computer back on, I tried to finish the video but "New Project 2" in iMovie was completely gone. However, "New Project 2" and all of my iPhoto videos and pictures were found when I went to Finder->Search for->Yesterday and Past Week, but I couldn't open any of them. When I tried to start over on the school project, none of my iPhoto videos would show up in iMovie. So, I tried opening iPhoto. When I did this, a message appeared saying "You can't open the application iPhoto because it may be damaged or incomplete.
Any advice? And thanks in advance for any help you can give me!
P.S. I have a backup of my iPhoto library on my desktop, if that info is any help. Also, I just got my MacBook in December, so I'm still a bit confused with Apple technology.

I'm having the same exact problem with my iPhoto! I live, breath and speak apple, from my mac to my ipad, to my itouch, iphone and ipod! I never had 1 complaint until now. I bought my iLife '11 before the mac app store so, just like you, I installed the cd and the first couple of hours after I installed it I was on iPhoto, then i shut down for the night. the next morning Iphoto kept freezing when it opened and had to force quite itself and now the app cant even be clicked on!
I think your best bet is 1 of 4 options:
1.) Go to finder and look up iPhoto library recovered photos. Its a folder that should contain any recovered documents that werent damaged. You should be able to import those to iMovie.
2.) You can go back to finder and search all documents. It seems like a lot of work, but you'll find the videos. The glorious thing about mac is that NOTHING gets deleted unless you press empty trash. I still have all my iPhoto pictures and movies even when iPhoto broke on me. So, if you have patients.. GO FOR IT!!
3.) Now there's an app store for mac. This means 3 major things
a.)We waisted $50 on iLife-The app store sells iPhoto for 15 bucks!
b.)No long wait for the software in the mail!
c.)No Screwing up with disks and manuals and cds
-this brings us to your best probable solution-RESINTALL IPHOTO!
put your old iPhoto in the trash. Only the app should be deleted when you drag it to the trash, not the documents. So if you spend and extra $15 It'll install right into your computer and the videos should come up just fine. I've seen it happen in many cases.
4.) If you dont trust me, are skeptical about reinstallation or your just plain confused and helpless, theres a plan B... or in this case plan #4! CALL APPLE CARE! Their super sweet and awesome.....and their professionals! They are your fastest, most reliable source. And I'v seen many people in the same situation as you so i bet apple has already gotten a ton of calls from people like you, dealing with the same thing. they should be pro at this by now! (but if you do call, you have to talk to a machine for like 2 min.,but then an apple person comes on.
Well, good luck with your project! (I also have 1 due thursday so your not alone We'r in this together! haha.) Just don't stress yourself. These things are fixed easy.

  • ID Install -  Can't open the application Adobe InDesign CS6 because it may be damaged or incomplete.

Trying to install inDesign CS6 on my imac. But everytime I try at end of install I either get a problem with install error, or if it does show up in my applications folder, it has a "no" sign and when clicked I get:
"You can't open the application Adobe InDesign CS6 because it may be damaged or incomplete."
Need help, Im a freelance desktop publisher and need this to work!

After I deleted Adobe File Manager because it was always popping up annoyingly, I got a similar "damaged application - reinstall" message. However, InDesign didn't seem to be affected. Nevertheless, I reinstalled AFM, and fixed the problem, except for the annoying appearances of AFM.
If it's not present on your system, you can search Google for "download adobe application manager mac" without quotes, to download and install it.

  • Message: You can't open the application Firefox because it may be damaged or incomplete

I've been using Firefox for a long time. Today I decided to change the settings to delete my history when I closed the window. Now when I try to open up Firefox I get a continuous pinwheel. I deleted Firefox from my computer and reinstalled, but it still won't work. There's now a grey icon titled Firefox with a square and a circle and line through it. When I try to delete this icon, it won't let me, saying Firefox is still running. When I try to open the icon, I get the following message: "You can't open this application Firefox because it may be damaged or incomplete."
Any suggestions on what to do?

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 27: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

  • Iphoto 4.0.3 damaged or incomplete

i am having a problem with my iphoto 4.0.3 as when I click on it in the applications folder it keeps coming up damaged or incomplete. I am wondering what I can do to restore it as the photo files are still there. I have the 2 installation cds that came with my computer but am afraid to use them incase the damage the other applications. Can anybody help with this matter and what is the best thing to do? I would be really grateful for any advice.

Hi, Leaoc65. Based on your further description of the symptoms, I think you should take the message at face value and reinstall iPhoto from your original source CD or DVD. But first, since it may have been corrupted as a result of a damaged hard drive directory, I suggest making sure the directory is in good shape.
Start up from your latest Mac OS X Installer Disk 1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, select your hard drive (the line with the drive manufacturer's name and product number in it) in the left pane of DU, click the First Aid tab in the right pane, and click the Repair Disk button at the bottom of the right pane. If DU reports having repaired anything, run it again until it doesn't find any errors to repair. Then click the Repair Permissions button and wait for permission repairs to be completed.
Quit DU, restart the computer normally, and drag the iPhoto Library folder from Hard drive > Users > your account folder > Pictures out onto the desktop. Then reinstall iPhoto. When the reinstallation is complete, open Disk Utility (Hard drive > Applications > Utilities) and Repair Permissions again. Now open iPhoto. It should open to an empty library: a new one that has just been created. If it does, fine — all is working properly. Quit iPhoto and drag the old iPhoto Library folder back into the Pictures folder, replacing the new folder with the same name. Open iPhoto again, and you should be back in business.

  • "Damaged or Incomplete File"

So I purchased Grand Theft Auto off of the App Store and interrupted the downloading the first time I downloaded it.
I got the normal "damaged or incomplete" error so I uninstalled it and cleared the App Store cache, and reinstalled it.
Its still not working and giving me the same error. I'm trying to maybe clear the application support cache and .plist files and see if maybe that does the trick.
    Any other advice?
I can download and install and run other applications from the store just fine, its only this one thats giving me trouble.
Its just frustrating because I recently paid for it and I've been trying to install it all afternoon.

I'm trying out your suggestion. I have a pesky file named "test" on my Desktop that is incomplete or damaged. I need help deleting it. I have located the file. I've opened Terminal. I tried to drag the file onto the Terminal icon in the Dock, but nothing happened. So now I've dragged it into the Terminal window, which I guess is what you meant. When I did that, I saw this:
    $ /Users/me/Desktop/test
Then I typed in "remove.rtf" like you said, and had this:
    $ /Users/me/Desktop/test remove.rtf
Then I hit enter, and had this:
    $ /Users/me/Desktop/test remove.rtf
    -bash: /Users/me/Desktop/test: Permission denied
    $
The file is still there. What do I do now?

    3. Drag the file you are trying to delete into Terminal; this should open a new terminal file.
    4. In the new window created by dragging the file in, type in remove.rtf and then hit enter.

If you need any further advice, just ask. I'll try my best to help

  • CS6 "damaged or incomplete" upon install

I have tried to reinstall PS6 from the original CD and from Adobe download. I have a valid serial number. Each time it says it is damaged or incomplete. I have done this 3X from the CD and 3X from the website. I have Mac OSX. I am doing this because my copy of CS6 stopped working.

copy your cd installation files to a desktop directory and install from that directory.
or check your downloaded install files to make sure they are the expected file sizes.
if those suggestions don't resolve your problem, attach a screenshot of the error message.

  • Applications downloaded are consistently "damaged or incomplete"?

For the last few days, I have tried to download some simple applications from the web.  Unfortunately, I broke down and bought an Android Tablet for myselft, (the wifey gets the ipad II) and I am trying to get some file transfer applications between the tablet and my mbp.  Dropbox, doubletwist, etc.  Everytime I try to download any of these applications for my macbook, i get the error message that the application cannot be opened due to it being damaged or incomplete. I was expecting the problems to be with the Android tablet, not my Mac!   Could this be due to the terrible bandwith im working with right now?  (Less that 1 mbps) Or could this be a bigger issue with my mbp?  Im running Lion on a 13".

Thanks for the ideas folks.  Unfortunately I did all the tests you recommended and it looks like its on the MBP, not the slow internets fault.  I am able to download just fine with the my Mini on the same internet connection. I also noticed that I cannot access any thing off the APP Store as well.  I can open the store, however I cannot down load anything.  I also noticed while doing the tests between the two Macs, that my MBP behaves differently when I do the ol' put the icon into the Apps folder.  The desktop goes blank for a second, and there is no confirmation (or progress bar).
So.....  Can I ask if you know where to start researching on how to reinstall the OS w/o loosing years of collecting and hard work?  From what I understand, I shouldnt use Time Machine because it may get me right back to the same issues? ( Like a fool, I never used it. My only backup would be with the buggy OS I have now).  Also, what do think caused this to act up today? I use my mbp everyday and dont want a repeat because of something I have done, or do regularly.
    Thanks Again.

Now I can not get or see any of my photos how do I reverse what I did? can I take that I Life back out and how? with out losing all my pictures? and how do you burn to DVDs now without IDVD?

    Diane,
Your photos are in the iPhoto Library. Almost certainly that is intact, so don't worry.
Go to your Home folder and open the folder called Pictures. What you want is in there, iPhoto Library. Don't do anything there, this is just to reassure yourself.
So it is a matter of getting the iPhoto app to work. Apps are in the Applications folder. Find it and trash it.
    Next download iPhoto:
