Desktop disappears after booting.

Hello, I have a 17 inch Macbook pro and I just upgraded to Leopard, the installation went smoothly and everthing seemed OK, after the install finished the mac restarted and everything went as it should be, it restarted a little slow but I think that was normal. A few seconds (about 30 to 45) after it finished restarting the whole desktop disappeared, I mean the dock, the finder menu and all of my icons in the desktop, it all disappeared except for the wallpaper. I waited for an hour but nothing happened, when I pressed the restart button the restart menu appeared but nothing happened when I clicked restart or turn off. I have no access to menus or aplications and when I click on the desktop nothing happens.
I turned it off by pressing the power button for several seconds and every time it boots the same thing happens, it starts as it should, it even conects to the internet but after a few seconds away goes the desktop.
I managed to restart it in safe mode (pressing shift during boot) and it took a long time but it eventualy booted perfectly, and in safe mode I can use the finder and applications, I ran a repair permissions from safe mode and restarted it but again the same thing happened. I'm pretty sure that some 3rd party application is causing a conflict.
Does anyone have any ideas?, can this be resolved by removing the offending application?, how can I find it? I would really appreciate any suggestions since I dont want to have to format my hard drive. Thank you.

Ohhh, why am I so impatient?, I removed a lot of 3rd party software but could never get the problem fixed, I was able to make a full system backup with time machine running in safe mode so I made an Archive Install, hoping the problem would go away, it didn't.
So, feeling confident about having a full system backup, I made an Erase and Install of Leopard. Everything went smoothly and the OS is great. Just a few hours later you guys replied to this topic talking about Dates to iCal. That's one of the 3rd party programs I did NOT erase, thinking it was harmless. Since I have never had HP zone image or anything like that I'm pretty sure that the problem lies with dates to iCal. It seems to be the only software we all have in common.
My system backup still has Dates to iCal, so in theory I could make a complete system recovery, eliminate Dates to iCal and RECOVER MY SYSTEM AS I HAD IT BEFORE UPGRADING. I already started reinstalling software but there's a LOT to do. Still theres a chance that erasing dates to iCal doesn't work and I find myself in the same place again, I'm not feeling up to reinstalling leopard all over again and dowload and reinstall stuff again unless someone can confirm that Dates to iCal is the culprit.
Please can anyone confirm?, any volunteers?, thanks for your help.

    Hi,
Regarding current information we can't say that it related to this exe file.
We need to use Clean boot mode and Safe mode to test the results:
Please first restart the Windows in Clean boot and see if the issue still persists after reboot:
How to perform a clean boot
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
If the issue doesn’t appear, you can determine which one can be the cause by using dichotomy in MSconfig. Checking on half of Non-Microsoft service and restart, determining which half of the services cause the issue and repeating to check half of the problematic
    half services.
If the issue still persists in Clean boot mode, please test in Safe mode.
Let me know the results in Safe mode.
If we cannot identify this issue in Clean boot and safe mode, please help to collect the boot trace and let's see what cause this issue:

  • KDE Desktop disappeared after update [SOLVED]

    Hiya folks,
I have just updated my system with pacman -Syu. There were several kde updates, among others, and now, upon reboot, the desktop is completely blank: no taskbar, clock, wallpaper, icons, etc... All I see after logging in to the desktop environment is a black screen and a mouse cursor. I can still fire up programs using Alt+F2, internet works and everything else seems fine, but no desktop or launcher. I have tried downgrading packages (kdebase-plasma and kdebase-workspace), but to no avail, and figured I would ask for help before any more blind downgrades. If it changes anything, virtualbox-ose was also updated.
As an aside, I have been using Arch since last January and this the first time I have encountered a problem I could not solve by browsing the wiki or forums. This is an awesome distribution and community.
    Thanks in advance,
    François

Rename the ~/.kde4/ directory (maybe .kde4.old or .kde4.backup) and try logging back in. That should create new configuration files and you'll (hopefully) have a usable desktop. Then you can copy over any application configs (Kmail, Amarok, etc)

  • Desktop disappears after iTunes 8 install

I installed iTunes 8, and when I rebooted my desktop was blank and my taskbar was gone. I finally was able to access system restore and go back to a prior restore point. But now iTunes 7 won't work because it says some iTunes file is a newer version. I'm running Win XP SP3.

In order to get this to work, I had to completelyy uninstall both iTunes and Quicktime. You can do this from Control Panel-Programs and Features. After your list of programs fully loads, select Quicktime first then click uninstall. Then do iTunes the same way. then I ensured that all references for these programs were removed from my registry. I did this by running a registry scan using the program called CCleaner. It is an awesome freeware program that scans your registry and cleans it. You can get it from http://www.ccleaner.com
After I restarted, I then re-installed iTunes. After I ran it the first time, I followed the directions from the initial post, and all problems were solved.

  • XFCE 4.4 desktop disappeared after pacman -Syu

My XFCE4.4 desktop does not load anymore after I pacman -Syu'ed.
I have no wallpaper, no icons, and when I click I have no menu.
Has anyone already experienced such an issue ? Any clue ?

Unfortunately, the xfce desktop does not appear, whether I do or not save the session...
Furthermore, when I launch it manually (xfdesktop &), there is no effect.
And there is no problem with the libraries, since ldd reports no broken library links.
I did reinstall the whole xfce4, but it didn't help either (altough I rm'ed all my ~/.* stuff related to xfce).
I also tested another wm (fluxbox) which worked out of the box(with xsetroot).
    This is driving me mad...
I'm currently investigating the whole startxfce4 script process....

  • Why does my creative cloud desktop disappears after I reboot?

Everytime I reboot my MacBook Pro I have to re-install Creative Cloud on my machine. It used to remain in the creative cloud folder and stay at the top of my screen. Now it does neither. Help!?!?!

I'm having the same problem, every time I shut down the mac the icon disappears and doesn't load from my applications. Is there a bug fix for this?

  • Windows 8.1 desktop hangs after opening folder after boot

Having read all the articles on fixing context menus I cannot find a solution for the exact issue I am seeing.

When I boot my PC I can right click and select 'open' on my PC. I can then quite happily bring up the context menu on any folder on my drive.

However for a period of around 10-15 seconds I an unable to select anything displayed on my desktop. After which period everything works fine until the next reboot.

My PC is a Lenovo T440s that was shipped with windows 8 and has been upgraded to windows 8.1.

I have tried disabling all non-Microsoft extensions using shexview and has tried safe mode but the problem still ex

    Also check 'Windows Event Viewer'.
To do this, right-click the start orb and select 'Windows Event Viewer'. Check the 'Application' and 'System' logs for anything out of the ordinary around the time you right-clicked your desktop.
Have you installed the Windows 8.1 drivers for your T440s after the upgrade was done?
Did it work correctly in Windows 8? Perhaps you might want to rollback or reset to factory and perform the update again. And then install your favorite software afterwards when the upgrade has successfully completed.
Some third-party software may stop working correctly when upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, and may be causing this issue.

  • Custom desktop picture disappears after restart

Ever since I purchased my MacBook Pro my custom desktop picture disappears after a restart. I select a photo either from the internet or my iphoto library and when I reboot the computer it goes back to the original desktop pattern, my photo is gone. Has anybody noticed the same problem on theirs and if so, have you found a solution? Its not a big deal, mostly goes under 'curious why this happens and how can I fix it' category . . .

    Try running the combo update.
    10.9.4 Combo Update
If that doesn't work, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update.

Mac OS X 10.6.8 statup problem: desktop goes black 10 secs after booting, can remain apparently asleep for 15 mins. I can't prompt it to wake, until recently it would wake when peripheral were added (earphones). What is wrong, and how can this be fixed?

You need to fresh install 10.6, programs fresh form original sources and return only vetted files (no TM migrations) from a regular storage drive
But this when erasing the drive use the Security Option: Zero All Data before installing 10.6
What has happened your data got corrupted and it's corrupted on the TM drive too.
So the Zero will map off bad sectors on your drive, the 10.6 install will be fresh, the programs will be fresh and only files will be returned, you'll find out in short order which ones they are.

  • My desktop background disappears after waking from sleep mode

My desktop backgroung disappears after waking from sleep mode. Just converted to Lion.

I spoke with Tech Support this morning. Apparently this is a known issue with Lion. I found it interesting that the rep insisted on saying that "it is the way Lion functions" instead of admitting that it is a GLITCH in the programming. He even said that it happens randomly and not on all computers and not all users experience this. That ought to tell you that it's a glitch.  Anyway, there is a "workaround" which is what you do to put a bandage on a persistent wound that should really get surgically stitched:
You either have to log out every time you leave the laptop, or you have to change Energy saver preference to set the display to go to sleep AFTER the computer is set to log out (in Security preferences).
Here is the article that instructs us on applying the bandage::
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4135?viewlocale=en_US
Suffice it to say that Apple does not plan on stitching this one up any time soon..

  • When I boot holding option, both Mac and Bootcamp partitions show up, but disappear after 2 seconds.

I recently swapped out my HDD for an SSD in my 2007 MBP. Hardware installed fine. I installed Mountain Lion from a time machine backup (of the same machine). I made the Windows partition in OSX, then installed Windows 7 on the partition it had made. In Windows, I updated Bootcamp to 3.3.
Everything seems to work fine in both OSX and Bootcamp from what I can tell. The problem is, when I boot and hold option to choose my boot drive, both drives appear and then disappear in about 2 seconds. They disappear with a "poof" animation, as if you had dragged an app off of the dock. If I'm fast enough, I can choose the boot drive before it disappears.
I tried once again reinstalling OSX from my last time machine backup (prior to the SSD swap), and the problem persists.
I thought it might have something to do with NTFS 3G and MacFuse, because I'd heard that they cause a bug where the bootcamp partition won't show up under the "startup disk" preferences pane. When I uninstalled said programs, bootcamp showed up under there startup disk options, but the problem persists.
    Any ideas?

Actually, this is just getting weirder.
Disregard my edit above. Clicking once doesn't have any effect on the drives. But the drives disappear only coming off of a RESTART from OSX. If I Shut down fully, the problem is solved. Likewise, if the drives have disappeared after a restart and I am forced to turn off the computer by pressing the power button, upon boot up the drives no longer disappear (Regardless of any action I take).
It would seem that the drives are disappearing due to something during the restart process.
Okay: Here are some workflows that might shed light on the situation:
Boot to Mac -> Shut down -> Alt boot : DOES NOT DISAPPEAR
Boot to Mac -> Restart -> Alt boot: DISAPPEARS
Boot to Mac -> Shut Down -> Alt boot -> Boot to Windows -> Shutdown or restart -> Alt boot : DOES NOT DISAPPEAR
Boot to Mac -> Restart -> Alt boot & fast select -> Boot to Windows -> Shutdown or restart -> Alt boot: DISAPPEARS
Boot to Mac -> Restart -> Alt boot & disappears -> Turn power off -> alt boot: DOES NOT DISAPPEAR
So the core culprit is something to do with OSX restart. The method of shutdown during windows doesn't seem to matter.

  • Desktop icons are rearranged after booting

Sometimes - I cannot make up the reason - my desktop icons are rearranged after booting in alphabetical order,
and also the icon-arrangement in some of the folders placed on the desktop is rearranged !!!
I'm used to arrange my icons in my way, and it's terrible, if the icon order is ****** up !!!
What's wrong? What can I do?

As far as I see, there' no thread that offers a solution.
I there a way to knock at Apple's door to see, if they are at least aware of this problem ???
To some degree the problem with the desktop icons has been going on, well, forever!  There were even problems back in OS9 days trying to arrange the desktop the way you personally wanted them.  To solve that problem then the utility DIM (Desktop Icon Manager) was born.  And believe it or not, the OSX descendent of DIM still exists today!  See this link.  Yes, DIM still exists because the problem still exists.
Interestingly enough I don't have the problem with my desktop so I don't use DIM.  I initially did install it before I discovered my desktop icons were staying put without it.  Everywhere else is another story.  Don't get me started on that (d@mn View Options hierarchical effect).
Speaking of View Option, one thing to check is to see if your View Options for the desktop are snap to grid or None.  I use snap to grid.

  • All desktops and icons/wallpaper disappear after updating

My main desktop icons/wallpaper dissappear when I swipe to a different desktop/fullscreen App like Mail or iCal.  Mission control shows nothing but a blank desktop.  If you blindly click around I can find my documets/folders on the desktop.  You can even create a new folder but it dissapers too.  It appears to be covered by a dark grey desktop that is hiding everything.  This happened right after I updated today.

Sorry, missed the part about updating to lion.
Mine is doing this but not from an update.
I was dragging photos to a file and must have let go of them without realizing it.  {BTW, didn't mean to do this}  Window said it was copying, from finder and I'm assuming it meant to the desktop.  My computer copied some but not all. I relaunched finder and everything on my desktop disappeared.  When tapping on the screen/desktop, hard-drive and files will reappear.   When pulling files/hard-drive from my computer and placing on desktop, they will disappear when the original file pops up.   When computer is shut down and restarted, I go through the same thing.  I ran disk repair and the test from the install disk and nothing is wrong.
So, what do I do to correct this and keep my hard-drive/files on my desktop?

    Hi cybertoof,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're seeing a startup issue with your Mac, it's booting to a gray screen with an Apple logo. Try the suggestions in the article linked below, they will resolve most issues related to starting up your Mac.
