Desktop disappears every morning...

Ever since installing 10.6.1, when I start up in the morning my desktop is gone! My preferences for Finder are set correctly and I have trashed the com.finder.plist as well as the com.desktop.plist file. I am really getting annoyed with this. Could someone suggest a better fix?

There seems to be a bug with Finder where some aspect of disconnecting a MBP from an external display will cause the desktop to crash. Symptoms include:
All desktop icons disappear but files on the desktop can still be accessed by browsing through Finder.
Desktop background image cycling (if enabled) does not occur.
You can bring up the desktop shortcut menu (i.e. by right clicking)
I've noticed people complaining of similar problems in the following forum topics:

The workaround is to relaunch Finder using the "Force Quit" application, at which point the desktop works normally again. However I'd really like a proper fix to this bug. If anyone's heard about one, please post about it here.

  • Cannot Receive Calls and Text Every Morning! Pls Help!!

    Hi all,
I am new here. I registered cus i am facing irritating problem with the phone. I dunno if anyone else is facing the same problem.
I cannot receive any calls or sms everyday morning.
My friends told me that it went directly to the voicemail.
However everything back to normal when i make a call out from my phone (basically just need to dail out a number, ppl dun even have to pick up the call!), and it will receive the sms that it missed immediately.
Actually I noticed the fact is that if i dun touch my phone for more than 3 or 4 hours, it went automatically to 'sleep', and it stop receiving calls.....
So now i have to call my landline every morning to active the phone which is so annoying! And my friends went mad too cus they couldn't find me as i was like disappeared.
I don't think its the problem with my carrier cus it all went fine until i updated it in Jan. Its now v5.0.0832.
I have searched other forums and there are some ppl having the similar problem, some said its cus of the "do not disturb" setting, but its no longer exist. So the problem is still unsolved for many others.

Please please please! Can anyone help me??!!  otherwise i may have to get a new phone,  i am a bit regret now,  i should have bought a iphone4 instead of bb!

This is something you should bring up with your wireless service provider.

  • How to fix a router needs to be reset every morning?

I just purchased a new WRT54G V8.0. I upgraded to 8.0.0.2 and set up my network. I have 3 wireless devices and one wired device. The wireless devices are the Desktop, the Laptop, and the Wii console. The wired device is the Xbox.
My problem is this... The network works perfectly all day, no problems what so ever except every morning the router has to be reset and I can't figure out why. Any ideas on how to fix this??
Wireless is set up for DHCP using WAP-PSK with TKIP auth and MAC adress filtering. Everything connects and work fine throughout the day but every morning it needs to be reset.
    Thanks.
Message Edited by DaveW on 08-24-2007 08:46 AM

already tried that. the problem is that the router won't assign an IP. Even on the wireless machines, the router shows up as available. I can even connect to it, the problem is it won't assign an IP. I've reset the preferences for the wireless connection, including the WAP key then attempted to recconect. I still couldn't get an IP.
This morning I just reset the router without playing with any settings on the computers. After resetting the router I attempted to reconnect. It asked me to enter the WAP key again, so I did and it connects perfectly.
It's not a huge problem I suppose... but it's really annoying to have to reset the router every morning.

  • Wireless accesspoint needs to be reset every morning

We do have 2 airport extreme stations that needs to be reset every morning before users can connect to it.
We connected the airports to a UPS to see if the problem disappeared but it is still there.
One of the lights of the airport extreme is off (left)
by resetting the airport everything is back to normal.
the airports do have the latest software installed.
I do know there is a lot of interfearence in the building.
Could this be the cause or is it something else.

I think I am having the same problem. Every morning and sometimes in the middle of the day when I leave my ocmputer for a few hours I have to restart my DSL modem and my airport as well as a router i have for my VONAGE phone. Everything is working correctly and connected correctly as well. It works fine but when i leave the computer for some time I lose my internet connection. I disconnected my airport entirely and just plugged the DSL directly into my computer and there was no problem so it is for sure some conflict with my airport extreme. I have the main base station which is the Airport Extreme and a express for my stereo and then another express in the back of the house extending the range.
It was all working perfectly when i first set it up but now this just started. i have been on the phone with vonage and with SBC for the dsl and the problem is not with their hardware. I tried calling Apple but they wanted $$ to even talk to me over the phone which I thought was pretty lame.
Can anyone offer suggestions that might help me?
    thanks

  • Desktop disappears after booting.

Hello, I have a 17 inch Macbook pro and I just upgraded to Leopard, the installation went smoothly and everthing seemed OK, after the install finished the mac restarted and everything went as it should be, it restarted a little slow but I think that was normal. A few seconds (about 30 to 45) after it finished restarting the whole desktop disappeared, I mean the dock, the finder menu and all of my icons in the desktop, it all disappeared except for the wallpaper. I waited for an hour but nothing happened, when I pressed the restart button the restart menu appeared but nothing happened when I clicked restart or turn off. I have no access to menus or aplications and when I click on the desktop nothing happens.
I turned it off by pressing the power button for several seconds and every time it boots the same thing happens, it starts as it should, it even conects to the internet but after a few seconds away goes the desktop.
I managed to restart it in safe mode (pressing shift during boot) and it took a long time but it eventualy booted perfectly, and in safe mode I can use the finder and applications, I ran a repair permissions from safe mode and restarted it but again the same thing happened. I'm pretty sure that some 3rd party application is causing a conflict.
Does anyone have any ideas?, can this be resolved by removing the offending application?, how can I find it? I would really appreciate any suggestions since I dont want to have to format my hard drive. Thank you.

Ohhh, why am I so impatient?, I removed a lot of 3rd party software but could never get the problem fixed, I was able to make a full system backup with time machine running in safe mode so I made an Archive Install, hoping the problem would go away, it didn't.
So, feeling confident about having a full system backup, I made an Erase and Install of Leopard. Everything went smoothly and the OS is great. Just a few hours later you guys replied to this topic talking about Dates to iCal. That's one of the 3rd party programs I did NOT erase, thinking it was harmless. Since I have never had HP zone image or anything like that I'm pretty sure that the problem lies with dates to iCal. It seems to be the only software we all have in common.
My system backup still has Dates to iCal, so in theory I could make a complete system recovery, eliminate Dates to iCal and RECOVER MY SYSTEM AS I HAD IT BEFORE UPGRADING. I already started reinstalling software but there's a LOT to do. Still theres a chance that erasing dates to iCal doesn't work and I find myself in the same place again, I'm not feeling up to reinstalling leopard all over again and dowload and reinstall stuff again unless someone can confirm that Dates to iCal is the culprit.
Please can anyone confirm?, any volunteers?, thanks for your help.

  • Updates do not install every morning and go coocoo

Two updates show up every morning when I start FireFox and it tries to install them and then it just shows them and then restarts and it does not install them. And restarts firefox.

You have the current version of Java installed 1.6.020 (includes Java Console 6.0.20)
You will need to manually remove those old Java Console Extensions because Java did not clean up after itself when it updated some time ago.
In Tools > Add-ons > Extensions, post a reply with the exact Java Console version numbter; like "Java Consol 6.0.20".
Then we can tell you exactly what folders you need to manually delete off your system.
OR, have a look at this ("Multiple Java Console extensions") and you may be able to determine that for yourself: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Multiple_Java_Console_extensions

  • Re-Enter Password every morning?

    Hello,
This has been happening for a very long time but I have ignored it up until now.
Every morning when my computer wakes up I am chronically met with the same prompt " Enter Password for Account "XXXX" " the POP server "xxx.xxx.xxx "rejected the password for the user". Now, although it is an easy fix by just pressing cancel 5 or 6 times, it is a nag every morning to have to do that.
    Any thoughts
    Raff

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • How to use Applescript to print out a certain calendar at 7am every morning?

    Hey guys,
I am trying to use AppleScript to print out one of my calendars each day at 7am every morning.
I have come up with this so far:
    tell application "Calendar"
view calendar "My Appointments" at (my (current date))
           switch view to day view
           activate
                        tell application "System Events"
                     keystroke "p" using command down
                     delay 1 -- (seconds)
                     tell process "Calendar"
                                                      tell window "Print"
if value of checkbox "Calendar Keys" is not 0 then
                                      click checkbox "Calendar Keys"
                               end if
                                                      end tell
                                       end tell
                        end tell
    end tell
The problem with this is that it will print out whatever calendars are currently viewable. I can't figure out how to tell it to deselect other calendars and just select the one I want. I also want to tell it to print this out at 7am every morning.
Any help would be very appreciated!

If you wanted to do the printout over multiple days, you would be best to loop through each day's events in the way the current script does, but to put a new loop around it that gets each new day's data:
    --opens a temporary file
set fileRef to open for access ((path to desktop) as string) & "meetings.txt" with write permission
    --effectively empties the file
    set eof fileRef to 0
    tell application "Calendar"
set dayCount to 9 --this will be the number of days to look forward (not including today)
repeat with currentDay from 0 to dayCount
                        set startList to {}
      --get's today's date
--set startRange to ((current date) + 12 * days) -- I used this for testing, to point to a day that had many appointments.  I've left it so you can use it, too.
set startRange to ((current date) + (currentDay * days))
--set the start of the range to previous midnight
set hours of startRange to 0
set minutes of startRange to 0
set seconds of startRange to 0
--set end of the range to next midnight
set endRange to (startRange + 1 * days)
      --get today's events
set todaysEvents to get (events of calendar "My Appointments" whose (start date is greater than startRange) and (end date is less than endRange))
--make a new list with start time of the event for sort purposes
                        repeat with theEvent in todaysEvents
                                  set end of startList to {startdate:start date of theEvent, eventID:theEvent}
                        end repeat
--sort using a bubble sort (suitable for short lists)
repeat with i from 1 to (count of startList) - 1
repeat with j from i + 1 to count of startList
if startdate of item j of startList < startdate of item i of startList then
set temp to item i of startList
set item i of startList to item j of startList
set item j of startList to temp
                                            end if
                                  end repeat
                        end repeat
      --empty the original list
                        set todaysEvents to {}
--repopulate the list in correct chronological order
                        repeat with theEvent in startList
set end of todaysEvents to eventID of theEvent
                        end repeat
--write today's date to the file
write (date string of startRange & return & return) to fileRef
--if there are no events, write this to the file as well
if length of todaysEvents is 0 then
write "No events" & return & return to fileRef

Every morning when I "awaken" my MacBook Pro, I come to find that my Safari browser has been closed on it's own. How to fix this? I don't want to lose anything I have possibly typed in a site that I have left to finish working on for later. I checked system preferences and everything seems to be checked appropriately as well as for Safari's preferences.
I am not sure what's going on, because Safari only just recently started doing this and I haven't downloaded anything, nothing out of my regular computer routine. As well, I upgraded to Mavericks when it came out and I have the last version of it too. I can't imagine that Safari would close simply because I don't have or want to upgrade to Yosemite. I am holding off on the upgrade for a bit, because I heard Final Cut Pro 7 can't be run on Yosemite. While I could partition my drive, I really don't want to. Mavericks is fine for right now :   )
Okay sooooo...back to Safari...what the! Please help and thanks for any replies ahead of time!
I Hope All Is Well In Your World :   )

There's an Apple help page on the DNS problem - at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408
The first thing to try is changing your DNS settings - and for that you need to open System Preferences, then the
    Network section.
In Network - click  on Advanced - then the DNS tab
under DNS servers - use the + button to enter two extra lines
    either these, from google dns
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    or from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
then click OK & then 'Apply'
You would need to do that seperately for the Cable (Ethernet) settings and Wireless (Airport)

how to make setting to change desktop background every time you close your mac

Don't let other people access your Mac in admin mode - they might change something a lot more important than the Desktop picture.
However you can use Automator: create an Application in it, and select 'Set the Desktop Picture' from the Library. Choose the picture you want. Save the application, then go to System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items and select the Automator application you just created. This will then run at startup and set your chosen picture.

  • BBM & Email stop working every morning....

Every morning my BBM, Whatsapp, Email and Facebook notifications stop working....
BBM has a red clock when sending and doesn't receive and the others don't receive or send anything...
The only fix has been pulling the battery or doing a soft reset with ctrl+alt+delete.
I have tried reinstalling the apps, reinstalling the OS (don't know how to format and reinstall tho)
Can anyone give me some solutions? Does it sound like a hardware problem?
My phone is a brand new out the box Blackberry Curve 8520, its got an etisalat sim card as I live in Dubai if that matters.

    Cat and Maximo,
    > Let me try to get that straight. Your BM does static NAT for your
    > mailserver (and other boxes), and suddenly UDP and ICMP from these
    > natted servers through the BM still works, but TCP doesn't?
Yes. That's what it looks like.
    > Can you still do TCP *to* the BM from the natted devices when that
    > happens? As you say your proxy continues to work, it sounds as if TCP in
    > general on the server continues to work, but does it also work from the
    > mailserver?
Everyone browsing via BM proxy continues with no interuption.
The mail server can telnet to any other server on the internal LAN but
nothing past BM. DNS continues working for the mail server too.
    > If really nothing changed, this might be a (succesful) DOS attack of
    > some sort. I wonder if a LAN trace could reveal anything of interest.
Do you mean port scan the BM server?
I know that "nothing has changed" is a loaded statement. The only thing
(that I know of) that has changed relatively recently is the addition of
the Squid server. It has been running behind the BM server for about 3
weeks. Recently I added a filter exception allowing the Squid server to
    access higher ports (dyn/tcp).
But, as I noted before, I think removing ipflt should eliminate any
doubts there. Is there some way Squid could be corrupting something there?
The problem was compounded this morning (saturday). I came in today so I
would have the network essentially to myself. But, to my surprise,
    everything was ok.
Cat, You're right. This server is no spring chicken. It is an IBM
Netfinity 3000. Its probably 3 or 4 years old (maybe more). I will think
about this as a hardware problem but I just wish the thing would die
altogether and get it over with. :o)
    Thanks,
    Brian

  • IPod Nano Second Generation Freezes Every Morning

I bought an 8G iPod Nano second generation about a month ago. I love it! I use it with Windows XP. Every morning when I turn it on for the first time, it freezes up when I play a Podcast or Audio book. It also does it with songs but not as much. I push the reset buttons for 5 seconds until the Apple symbol comes up, it resets and then it works fine for the rest of the day.
It seems like it gets messed up after I connect it the iTunes library on my computer. Does any one else experience this problem?
    Dell   Windows XP

I'm not sure you were experiencing the same problem:
    1. Sync iPod.
    2. Let iPod fall asleep for some period of time (a few minutes doesn't cause the problem; beyond 15-20 minutes does).
    3. Awaken iPod and play a podcast -> iPod freezes.
I and many others have experienced this same problem. Yet, I don't have any life updating smart playlists referring either to podcasts or to playlists not on the iPod.
Sometimes, playing a song track before playing a podcast will work. If the song plays, subsequent podcasts will, too. However, the song track often freezes, too.
Also, if you reset the iPod at any point between synching and playing the podcast, the problem is averted.
Apple has yet to acknowledge this bug despite the multiple threads. I presume that the scenario required to reproduce it is still rare (synching podcasts yet waiting for some time before playing the first one).

  • HP Officejet Pro 8610 (Network)' is offline every morning

I am running Windows 8. I use IE 11 and Chrome on occasion. Every morning I have trouble "waking up" my printer. I get "HP Officejet Pro 8610 (Network)' is offline". Sometimes turning the printer on and off resets it but today nothing seems to work. I even updated drivers. The rest of my network (excluding printer usage) is working fine. I have not been on a public network so that is not an issue nor has anyone else in our household.  I need to correct this every morning problem. Really, any time the printer goes to sleep I have this issue. I'm unsure if I can stop it from going to sleep or not since I can't even see it from any of our computers. Someone please help. I've been dealing with this about a month. I had previously purchased an Epson printer similar and it now sits in a box in my office because of similiar annoying issues. I previously had HP all-in-ones for about 15 years with no problems. This one is starting to make me wonder about the declining quality of HP printers. Please help as soon as possible. My son has a paper due Tuesday and can't print it. Thanks

Hello , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand your Officejet 8610 is offline every morning and it seems like this printer has trouble waking up. I will do my best to assist you! Please follow this entire HP document on What is Sleep Mode? You can try updating the firmware, which should help, since your printer is losing wireless connection when it goes to sleep: 1) Press the right arrow on your printer2) Press Setup (Wrench)3) Press Web Services4) Press Printer update and check for update now Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector. I just want to see if this makes a difference. Another option you have is setting up schedule on and off. This will help with the sleep mode, as you will determine what time you would like this printer to turn and off. Note-If you decided to go down this route, if you receive faxes all the time, schedule on/off might not be a good idea. If you set a time frame when this printer is supposed to turn off, then you will not receive a fax. Also, if ePrint is enabled, this feature will not work. 1) Press the setup menu (Wrench)2) Press power management3) Press Schedule On Yes and set the time frame4) Press Schedule Off Yes and set the time frame I just want to make sure that your printer isn't going offline because of your router, not by the sleep mode. Just in case, I will provide an HP document on Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection. This will allow you to set a static IP address. Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great night!

  • After updating to iOS 8, every morning I cannot send messages and have to restart my iPhone5 to send or receive any messages. How do I fix this??

I have a 32gb iPhone5, and every morning without fail, after updating to iOS8, my messages won't send, the message app crashes and won't respond, and then when it finally seems to, the whole thing is blank (as in no messages from anyone show up and the messages screen is just blank). The only way I've found to fix it is to turn off and on my phone and it works for another ~24 hours.
Is anyone else having this problem??

    Hey Dr_Westopher,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you are having difficulty with iMessage. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
    iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario
