Desktop Display distorted ... cannot see GUI to reset ... login window FINE

Please help ... Somehow (I did it but don't know how) the Display settings on my Tiger Mac have gotten to some setting that distorts the image beyond visual comprehension (diagonal scanline-like distortion). The login window is just fine, but when the desktop launches it goes batty.
I've zapped the PRAM to no avail.
I'm totally stuck.

First do this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Archive and Install feature...

Then after booting up, repair Permissions, then reapply the combo update...

Repair Permissions afterwards, reboot.

After ver 26 was installed my screen display distorts when scrolling - I tried resetting - no luck - any suggestions?

when I use either the scroll down bar on the right side or arrows up/down the display on the screen distorts at an angle as it moves up or down. does not reset with time

I think I saw a screen shot of this in a different thread, but I can't find it at the moment.
When there are strange display artifacts, I suspect a graphics driver incompatibility.
As a workaround, you could disable hardware acceleration of graphics in Firefox and in Flash (if relevant):
(A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"

After downloading the app for my Note 10.1-2014, synced my Desktop bookmarks, I cannot see the 3-bar menu and when I do use my menu button it does not work.

I have searched all the ways I know about this. I have FF V28 on my PC.
I downloaded FF v 28.0.1 and I cannot get the 3 bar / dot menu on my Note 10.1-2014 tablet.
All your support notes describe the possibility of using my Home button, main button and even the back button.
Still no luck and really want to use it on my tablet.

Hi rketek1, you may be viewing information about something other than the current release of Firefox for Android.
When using the Knowledge Base here, if the article title doesn't mention Android, check the "Editing Tools" section in the left sidebar to make sure it specified Firefox for Android and not one of the desktop versions.
For what it's worth, I have attached screen shots of the "3-dot" menu from a Nexus 5. "Back" is a <s>physical</s> button on the device, so it doesn't appear on the screen ''within Firefox''.

PC's cannot see my iMac on a Windows network

Hi. I am on a uni campus network. I can see everyone's computers (almost exclusively they are pc's) but no one can see me.
However, when I use Shakespeer to connect to a P2P sort of network made of the same computers (ie, the uni doesn't know about it) everyone can see me fine.
So how do I set things up so people can see me on the normal network?
Pretty sure we use a proxy.

a) can you test if any of the windows pcs can connect to your Imac via the follwoing method:
1. Right click on Network on the windows desktop and choose "Connect network drive" (or similiar)
2. Enter \\youripaddress\yourusername in the first line and press connect.
you should be asked for password and user and then there should be a connection to your mac...
b) check your workgroup setting via /Applications/Utilities/DirectoryServices -> SMB/CIFS settings

Cannot see some registry values in Windows Server 2008 R2

I have a couple of Windows 2008 Server R2 machines running a custom shell with AutoAdminLogon enabled. I'm trying to temporarily disable these settings to apply some patches but when I navigate to
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlongon I don't see any of the key values.
Not sure what's happening...any insight would help.

if you don't see any of the key values..
and you know exactly what you are doing..
you can create the registry keys and values.
But make sure you know exactly what you are doing; adding and changing registry keys, might end up with a corrupt operating system.
Please try the settings on a virtual environment, before applying to the production.
If anything mess up with changing the registry you got your back covered, but if you're brave enough do it on the production server without doing the test on a VM.

Cannot see group picture

So I just updated to 6.21.64.104 and when I went to my group chat, I couldn't see the group pic anywhere, older versions of skype had the group pic showing there, but now i have to click the topic to see it, and apart from that, when I click the topic and change it, it stays the same default picture, it doesn't change, so what can I do to this problem? any way to display the pic without clicking the title topic? and why does the pic never changes?

You can uninstall the special 6.21.64.104 version (with new user interface) and install the regular 6.21.0.104 version where the profile pictures are displayed:

Mac Desktop cannot see Western Digital HD

My Mac desktop with 10.9.4 cannot see Western Digital external hard drive when connected via Firewire 800 wire in any port.
If I use the USB 2.0 wire to connect both units, then WD works perfectly. I have tried repairing permissions,
rebooted, called WD for update, tried a brand new Firewire 800...and nothing has worked.
Any help would be appreciated.

After installing Lion os I cannot see my desktop 1 nor can I see my open windows when I go to finder, I just get the grey/black background that comes with mission control. Any ideas as to how to solve this problem?

The top picture is what my Desktop 1 looks like. And the picture below is what my desktop looks like after clicking mission control. Ive tried changing wallpapers, changing preferences, etc. and I still can't figure out what's wrong. Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time.

Cannot see my external hard drive on the desktop

Hi,
I am at the tail end of a large documentary project on FCP. Suddenly, this evening my external hard drive (Maxtor One Touch III, Turbo Edition, 1.5TB) becomes sluggish. I shut down (all properly) and restart and the external hard drive is no longer on the desktop (does not mount and cannot be seen anywhere).
I change ports (from one FW400 to another), try connecting to a different Mac (was running on an iMac, try connecting onto a G5) and still cannot see the hard drive. I try connecting using USB2 and still cannot see it on the desktop. I run disk utility and the hard drive shows up in menu on the left, I am able to run "verify disk" as well as "repair disk" - hard drive is fine, no errors no problems. However, I still am not able to access the drive - just does not show up on the desktop or anywhere else where I can get into it. I run the install disk that came with the hard drive (Maxtor) and a backup utility can detect the drive and shows that 1.37 TB of data is safe (so no data loss) but I can still not detect the Hard drive. I also noticed that the light on the hard drive is active indicating that the drive is being accessed.
Problem is simply that both my Macs do not show the drive regardless of how I connect them to the drive (FW400, FW800, USB2 and every port has been tried).
Need help here...please....
I realize this might be more suited for a general OSX or Hard drive issue, but since I have always got great answers from FCP users that I am posting this question here.

Thank you for all your comments and suggestions. I downloaded Disk Warrior 4 from Alsoft - paid $108, followed the instructions to the letter (after reading and rereading sevral times) and ran the utility...it detected the Maxtor HD, pointed out several errors, repaired the errors, and then gave me the option to preview the new and compare to the old HD...this is where things went wrong. There was no HD to be seen - new or old...same problem. HD is not visible on my Finder, on the Disk Warrior Preview or on the desktop. I went ahead and rebuilt the HD...all errors fixed, Disk Warrior states that all is fine and dandy and that my hard drive should be perfect and I can access it...BUT its still not there, I cannot see it on the desktop nor anywhere else.
It shows up in Disk Utility as a page icon - but I cannot access it.
So, unfortunately for me...my problem still remains and I am now out a hundred bucks!
Please, anybody out there - who can give me some direction - I would greatly appreciate it.
BTW, the data is still all there and the light on the front of the drive keeps flashing indicating something is going on...but drive is not mounted, invisible.
I read on the Maxtor packaging something about a built in Maxtor DriveLock - a password protected security measure against theft and loss...could I have inadvertently activated that and that is causing the problem...please advise.

Never mind. Problem "solved". I messed around with grid spacing, made some extra room by moving other icons, and was finally able to place the icon where I wanted it.
