Desktop does not appear in my finder

I was working on a document, and when I wanted to save a new version using "save as," my desktop was not an option. I saved the file elsewhere, closed everything, then opened "finder." No desktop. I restarted the computer: no desktop. I shut it down and then restarted: no desktop.
What the heck?

On the Desktop click Finder top left and select Finder Preferences
In the box that opens click the Sidebar button then check Desktop
Close the panel
See if that sorts it out, if not post again.
(What application were you using at the time ?)

  • Time capsule does not appear in the finder.

My time capsule appears in airport utility. It is ready to go. I have it on ethernet because airport isn't a very powerful wireless router. The time capsule does not appear in the finder. It does not appear in the disc utility. It does not appear in time machine. The airport utility will do factory resets, get it ready for internet, whatever. The rest of my net work can not see it.
I have done the finder preferences. I have restarted the computer, jiggered the sharing preferences, done factory resets, tried to find sparce bundles and sparse bundles, reset the finder, force quit finder, tried to find finder plsts, trawled the discussion pages, tried to find server addresses and apple ids. Nothing seems to work.
Time capsule never seems to work as smoothly as it supposed to. I shudder to present my problems to apple support because I know that its a long road and will probably end in tears. But here I am, naked before this disappointing edifice.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

What is the make and model number of your modem?
I have a microwave modem on my roof. I don't think that has anything to do with this. I am not using my airport for a wireless router, only as a time capsule connected by ethernet. The Airport Utility calls my airport : Airport Extreme 802.11 ( 1st Generation )
Is the Time Capsule acting as your main router or is another device handling those services?
No, I have a lyncsis router. The wireless router function on airports doesn't seem to work very well. I don't think thats a problem with mine. My brothers have gone with lyncsis as well.
Was the Time Capsule visible in the Finder before, and is now "lost", or has it never appeared in the Finder?
It appeared on my previous laptop. That died. Now I have an imac. The airport has never appeared on the imac.
Thanks for trying to help so quickly

  • Macintosh HD does not appear in left Finder window under Devices

When I open Finder, Macintosh HD does not appear in the left panel under Devices--only my external hard drive is listed. I am also using a third-party file management program called Forklift, and when I use that program to look at my files, Macintosh HD properly appear under Devices, along with my external hard drive.

Under Finder Preferences, do you have both Hard Disks and External Hard disks checked on?

  • Suddenly share desktop does not appear as an option

All of a sudden today when I tried to share my deskktop in lync 2010 the "desktop" option does not appear when I click on share.  Only "program" or "show staging" appears.  Do you know how to fix that?

    Hi,
Did you solve the issue with the help of Ali provided?
Did the issue happen only for you or for multiple users?
You can login Lync client on other computer with your Lync account to have a test.
If the issue happen only for you, please also check if there have any specific conferencing policies linked to the issued Lync user.

  • Xp desktop does not appear after installation of 8.5.1.

I installed LV 8.5.1. on a LV 8.5. XP machine yesterday.  Since then, the desktop will only appear if I run the computer in SAFE MODE.  The hard drive runs almost all the time, and it is very slow to respond to any clicks of the mouse.
    What can I do?

One or more of the services is probably causing this. Try to disable all non-Microsoft services and then enable them one at a time until you find the culprit. You can read more here and here.
You should also be able to determine which process is causing the CPU hogging (which is probably what's going on in addition to your hard drive) by launching the Task Manager and see which process is using close to 100% CPU or is the one that is continuously increasing in memory footprint.

  • After start up, desktop does not appear on Mac Pro

I was working on my Mac Pro last night, steped away from it for about 20 minutes.  The screen saver came on and froze, I was not able to exet out of the screen saver to the desk top.  Had to force shut off, waited 1.5 minutes and restarted.  As soon as the apple icon went away after starting up, the "beach ball of death" would not go away.  I left the machine on for 10 minutes and still nothing, same light gray background and no key/mouse command would activate the desktop to open.  This macnine is on it's second graphics card.  Any thoughts?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My hard drive does not appear in the Finder window

I installed a second internal hard drive inside my G5, but it never shows up in the finder window, nor anytime I try to access files from within applications (it appears on the desktop though). How can I configure my computer so that it always sees this drive and grants me access?

The reason for resetting nvram is to force the G5 to rebuild the device tree, which it seems "loath" to do without a kick start.
Swapping drives oddly enough seems to leave a profile in nvram for the old device.
Personally, booting into Open Firmware is easier, thorough, and if that was all it was, works (never liked the reboot over and over zap pram which, to reset nvram, must be done from cold boot).

  • How can I eject a disc that does not appear in the Finder?

I put a CD into my Mac that spun and spun but never registered in the Finder or anywhere else, but now I can't eject it.  Is there a physical way to do that like there is on a PC?

... or press the (left) mouse button immediately after chime, and keep it until disk is ejected.

  • Airdrop does not appear in my MacPro Upgrade

Airdrop does not appear in my Finder sidebar or in a System Preferences search on my MacPro. My Macbook Pro upgrade had Airdrop appearing and working fine but my desktop shows no trace of it. What is going on?

    Does it meet the requirements?

  • Flash drive does not appear in Finder or on desktop

When I plug a flash drive into my iMac, it sometimes does not show up in Finder or on the desktop (or if it shows up when I plug it in, it disappears after awhile). As a result, I am unable to eject it properly, and when I physically disconnect it a message appears telling me I removed it improperly and may have corrupted my data. Another discussion thread said to go into Finder> Preferences and choose to show CDs, DVDs and iPods on the Desktop. I had already done this, so there must be another solution. Any help?

launch *disk utility* (in applications > utilities). if DU can see the drive, try repairing it.
perhaps reformatting the drive for Mac (make sure the partition map scheme of the USB drive is GUID or Apple Partition Map (APM) and the volume format is Mac OS extended (journaled)) will bring it back to its senses.

  • Finder does not appear in All Desktops

Suppose that you have set up multiple Desktops from Mission Control.
From the Dock, I choose Finder > Options > (Assign To) All Desktops. This is so that varius open windows on the Desktops will appear on All Desktops. However, this setting does not survive a restart. That is, after a restart, an open window on one Desktop will not appear on another Desktop.
I have tried to delete the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. But, the All Desktops setting still does not survive a restart.
How can I overcome this issue?

This calls for an Applescript or formal application

  • Finder & Dock do not work - Mac Hard Drive does not appear on Desktop

Until yesterday, my powerbook was working properly.
This morning, I wanted to use it and I had the following problems after login.
1/ My Mac Hard drive does not appear on my dekstop
2/ My dock appears but no icon works when I click on them. So, I can't open finder. I have no response.
3/ Furthermore, my top bar (with clock, login name, Airport icon...) appears but it is frozed.
I try several solutions as :
    - rebooting in safe mode,
    - rebooting, with in the same time, hold different keys (option, apple, p & R)...
As of today, no solution works.
    Thanks for your help.

Ok, that's good enough. You may be able to repair this with the 10.5.8 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
    EDIT:
I have around 5 Go space left on my Mac
Also, your getting very low on disk space. Try to copy some of the data off to other media. *Do it before you try applying the combo, you'll need the space.*

Adobe Creative Cloud (Desktop) does not work properly. The application is blocked : it could not be launch neither stopped. I'm on MAC Yosemite OS, does anyone know how to remove it properly or to force its stop. It does not appear in the launched applications.

I received no error message. The application was just trying to find applications unsuccessfully.
I am using MAC OS 10.10.1
I tried to uninstall the application  but it seems that a kind of deamon is still installed thus providing me to reinstall properly. Do you know where are the elements to remove in order to get my machine just like before ?
Otherwise I would have to reinstall everything and this would be a pain.
    Thanks for your help.
