Desktop Drive icons?  arrangement

Is there a way to make, for example, an external HD icon on the desktop pop up in a certain place when mounted? rather than just on the right side in sorted order?
id like to have my external pop up in the bottom left when its turned on...

Hello,
See if this does the trick. Go to your Desktop and click on a clear space so you see the word Finder in the Menu. Click View/Show View Options. UNcheck the box that says: Keep Arranged By. You can move the icons on the Desktop now wherever you want. I just tried this myself and rebooted to see if the icons stayed on the left side and voila!
If you need further assistance, please post back.

  • KDEmod desktop drive icons naming [solved]

    Hello.
I am using KDEmod and it is great. One thing bothers me though. I set my system so, that it shows drive icons on desktop so I can mount them just by clicking them. I have a few volumes going from sda1 to sda10. THe thing that bothers me is, that these volumes do not show up with their names (sda1, sda2 etc..) but with their side - 15G Media, 40G Media etc....
Is there some place where I can set this ? I was able to rename most of those just by editing their properties, but I can not rename the / partition.
I tried to search here first, but nothing showed up.
    Thanks in advance.

Normally you can edit partition names in media:// or just create "shortcut to drive" on the desktop, and name that one.
You can also set volume labels with e2label (ext2/ext3), mlabel (fat32, mlabel is in mtools package) or ntfslabel (ntfs, ntfslabel is in ntfsprogs package i belive). There is an equivalent for resierfs as well. The latter method is persistent, and also works with xfce/gnome.

  • Desktop drive icon missing for just one of several USB external drives

I have a Mac Mini running OS 10.8.2 Server. There are 12 Seagate Flex USB drives (attached through two USB 2.0 powered hubs) and 3 Western Digital Firewire drives, and until last week all functioned absolutely normally. Last week the desktop icon for one (just one!) of the Firewire drives dissappeared, but the drive is still mounted in /Volumes. It is even correctly shared and can be remotelly accessed on another Mini and a MacBook. Disk Utility shows that it is mounted, and the Repair Disk function unmounts, checks, reports all is well and remounts. I'm just missing the icon in Finder.  Where is it?
Before you suggest it.... Yes, hard disks is checked under Finder Devices preferences. All the other drives do show as expected in both the root folder view and on the Finder sidebar. This one drive is mounted and visible in ls -ls /Volumes, but missing from desktop, root folder and sidebar in Finder.

I am having the exact issue with both 10.8.5 and 10.9.1 servers.
The server is doing well and then one day without notice or failure the desktop icon for the shared volume is gone. The share remains mounted and available to users. The volume is not showing damaged or any other problem. The volume can be found in terminal and by doing a finder go to the /Volumes area and all is there. But, even though disk utility shows it mounted and all else is good, Server app then starts to loose the volume for maintenance and propogation etc, it still shares but can't be seen or touched by GUI's.
I also was easily able to get back all through Backups that were up to date so no data loss, but this is quite disconcerting.
One possible variable is that both that I have seen are software RAIDs (Disk Utility raids).
If anyone has any thoughts I appreciate it.
The two servers are Mac Pro 2012 4 core 10.8.5 server and Mac Pro 2008 early 4 core 10.9.1 server.
    Thanks MDB

  • Wanted - drive icons that show the percent drive used & free graphically

Anyone know of an app or utility that dynamically modifies each mounted desktop drive icon to show the percentage of drive used and free?
I'd like to see a pie graph or bar graph of how much disk space is used and free as the drive icon.
While I am wishing I'd like it to dynamically update in real time or at some settable interval.
I have iPulse that sort of shows it. I am sure there are other apps that provide a separate indicator but I want the indication as the drive icon.
    There.... I wished my wish.

huh, I never thought to try that. Odd that 12pt doesn't work. Maybe I'll resubmit this bug.

  • What happens when the external icon jumps on top on the hard drive icon on the desktop?

The external drive icon jumped to the hard drive icon on the desktop and after that happen the iMAC started running slow. Not sure how that happen or what is happening to the iMAC after it happen. All my applications are running and launching slow.  Also, when I tried moving files to the external drive I'll get a "error code -36". When I looked up the error message it says that the file is corrupted even though I could still open them. How can I fix this problem and not lose any files?  Thanks for any help.

RRFS has probably got the answer basically - but the combined contents of the two drives has probably maxed out the drive space on Macintosh HD, meaning the OS can't use virtual memory properly.
Open a Finder window and read the available space at the bottom.
If you have copied the drive, it should show as a folder under Macintosh HD in the Finder.
I hesitate to tell you to delete the whole folder as that may be too much for Finder to cope with. Open the folder and delete files and folders in small chunks, emptying the trash each time before doing the next..
Meanwhile, if you go to the Finder preferences and uncheck the item for Hard Disks in the desktop list, then move the icon for the external away from that corner before re-enabling the Hard disk option.
You may need to go to View options from the right-click menu on desktop and set 'arrange by' to 'none' in order to get the icon to stay where you want it.

  • No hard drive icon on desktop - new hard drive

I just upgraded the hard drive on my macbook pro.  Now, when I look at the desktop there is no icon for the hard drive (Macintosh HD).  What do I need to do to be able to have a hard drive icon on the desktop?

  • Hard Drive Icon Not Showing Up on Desktop

Hey folks, this might be a very very noobish question, but I guess I'm fairly new to OSX...
My Hard Disk Drive icon is not showing up on my desktop for some reason...if I open a New Finder Window, I can't see it on the upper left hand quadrant in columnar view, but I can get to all the shortcut folders in the lower left hand quadrant (Applications, Documents, Movies, etc.), but can't navigate to the root directory unless I use Terminal (yup, I'm root user).
When I go into Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app) then I can see the drive itself as well as the Windows partition I created for Bootcamp purposes. I tried Verify Drive and Verify Permissions to see if there were some weird problems with the drive itself but both came back perfect, and still no HDD icon on the desktop.
I have a feeling it's just some weird setting I may have inadvertently tweaked, so any feedback, advice, or information on how to get it back would be very welcome and appreciated. In case it's any help, here is the HDD Information from Get Info:

Thanks ElBiggus, I neglected to add that I had already done this. "Hard disks" is checked, as is "CDs, DVDs, and iPods", as well as "Connected Servers".
If I drop down the "New Finder windows open:" menu, I see "Home", "Documents", "Computer", "iDisk" (greyed out), and "Untitled", which is my Windows partition.
This is a very strange one...can't seem to figure it out

Quick thing to try: from the Finder, select the View menu and then select "Clean Up" in case it has wandered somewhere almost off the desktop.  Also, if it is "hiding" behind something, it will be revealed.

  • External drive icon not appearing on desktop

Hi - I have also posted this in the Time Machine forum as this is where my problem started. New iMac yesterday - replacement for faulty iMac which I had backed up using Time Machine. Reinstall from Time Machine effortless - no problem. Downloaded available software updates and 10.5.7 onto new iMac. No problem until I go to do another backup. Time Machine does not recognise external drive and I get "volume could not be found" message. At this point in time the external drive icon is showing on the desktop. Give up and go to bed thinking I will reformat external drive in the morning and start again
This morning, I boot up the machine but the external drive icon has disappeared from the desktop. Unplug external HD from usb and plug in again. No icon on desktop although it shows in Finder and Time Machine.
Anyway - I turned Time Machine off and then pointed it at the Ext. HD - went to back up now and magic - did complete backup and has done a second subsequently. Seems to have created a second backup folder separate from the one created by previous machine from which I reinstalled. Still no desktop icon! Switch iMac off and on again - still no desktop icon. So why - the Ext. drive is recognised and works so why isn't an icon for it appearing on the desktop?
Please help - I need answers to these weird happenings
    Thanks
    Ann
    .

Problem solved and it was so simple - just had to go to Finder, Preferences, General and tick the box that says external devices. Desktop icon has returned:-) Don't know why it became unticked but everything now is working absolutely fine (as far as I know lol) Hope this is the start of a good relationship between me and my new Mac!

  • External Mounted Hard Drive Icon Not Showing on Desktop nor on Sidebar

    Bonjour,
I have a portable drive that does NOT show up in the Sidebar nor on the Desktop. The only way I can see and navigate through it is by clicking in Disk Utility > Mount Point: <hyper-link>
Then hard drive icon and its content show up fine. But the HD icon is slightly dimmed (it is paler than the all other - HD, computer, etc - icons).
I verified the external HD and it is just fine. I have another eDrive (TechTool Pro 4) partition and it shows up like any normal HDs normally does.
How can I get the icon to show up back into the Sidebar and the Desktop?
Is there a "Preference" file I need to throw out?
Is there a UNIX command I could execute to make it show up again?
    Thanks for your assistance.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
    tell application "System Events"
set visible of (choose folder with invisibles) to false
    end tell
When prompted, select your hard disk in the dialog box. Next, log out and back in.

  • Two hard drive icons on my desktop, would like to have only one...

Hello  everyone, I recently got a PowerMac G5 (I think it's a 2.3 GHz). It came with a hard drive inserted 'Untitled', which came from my old 1.6 GHz G5. On the desktop though, I get two hard drive icons, my main start up drive called 'Untitled', and another one called 'Spare'. I was told that my G5 has only one drive inserted 'Untitled', so I'm trying to either get rid of 'Spare', or merge it somehow into 'Untitled'. Under the Volumes folder, I was not really able to get rid of it, is this something to do with Disk Utility?
BDAqua - under Get Info, when I was on Leopard, I tried changing a User Permissions category called 'Everybody' from Read Only to Read and Write. Upon restart two days later, Leopard would not start up (loads of writing on the screen, with the Mac power button, asking me to restart). To cut a long story, I am now back on Tiger lol (Leopard issues for another discussion lol), so now I dare not play with anything which says Read Only, especially when it's probably not even necessary. I am writing this from the library, so don't know what exactly it says in Get Info - User Permissions for either drive at the moment. If this is relevant, I can have a look later and post back, I'll also verify permissions in Disk Utility for both drives, but I think they are fine. Actually, when I was on Leopard, my 'Untitled' drive took ages to verify permissions, and always loads of writing appeared! Now that I'm on Tiger, the other day when I verified Disk Permissions, it was quick and fine!
    Thank you
In the screen shots, 'Untitled' is model ST31, 'Spare' is model WDC

Hi BDAqua, sorry I should have just opened it in the first place! I don't know why that man told me there was only one hard drive inside, perhaps a misunderstanding.
It seems that there are actually two hard drives inside, one in A, and one in B (see photo)! So, if this is the case, I don't have a problem with the two hard drive icons.
I guess if a G5 shows two hard drives on the desktop, then there's two hard drives in the machine!
    Thanks for helping anyway.

  • Highlighted Hard Drive Icons on Desktop no longer open when dragging/copyin

I noticed this yesterday and I have no idea how to fix it - hope someone here might have a quick fix.
When I attempt to move files into my folders from the desktop, I used to simply drag the files over the icon of the hard drive I wished to place it, and the icon would highlight, and then open, and I could navigate to the folder I wanted and drop them, and all the windows would close.
Now when I attempt to move files off the desktop in this way, the hard drive icon will highlight, but won't' open the window automatically as it used to.
I've done a permission repair and that didn't help it.
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Respectfully submitted,
    Len

Thank you for your response. That was exactly the problem. I have no idea how it became switched off, since I'm the only one that uses the computer, but no matter.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Hard Drive icon gone to lines on Desktop

In the last hour my Macintosh Hard Drive icon on the desktop has gone to a series of lines under the picture of the HD. I've restarted a few times just to see if it was a small glitch but its still the same. Does anyone know how to bring the wrods "macintosh hard drive" back to life ? I've only had this a few days and already getting problems.
    Paul.

You can go clean all of them, including font cache. Restart your computer about 3 or 4 times after it. The first reboot will take awhile, as the cache files are being rebuilt.
