Desktop environments, window managers and xinit

in the beginner's tutorial, it says that xinit would default to the global xinitrc file in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc if the one in the user's home directory is not found and the global xinitrc would invoke twm. So my question would be is the twm window manager installed together with xorg when i do pacman -S xorg?
Another question i have would be whether compiz would work better with compiz fusion than with the default window manager gnome(metacity) or kde(kwin) (less crashes, instability, etc) since its the same entity which developed both softwares (correct me if I am wrong) ?
Between gnome and kde, which is more unstable and prone to more crashes?
I've only really used kde before and ive experienced many crashes so far(It may be distro specific - the only distro i tried and never had any crashes with kde whatsoever was slackware so I'm not sure if kde in arch behaves the same way too, can someone enlighten me how its like in arch?)
and was wondering if gnome would be a better bet.
I do like the panel layout and eyecandy in kde and I'm not sure if the panel in gnome can be adjusted to the bottom or not?
like i said ive never used gnome much before

yes, xorg-twm is in the xorg group. You can see that in the PKGBUILD which you can access via the web interface or via ABS.

yes you can.
About the stability questions, a lot depends on your hardware and your configuration.

Make sure that the power supply unit is powerful enough. It's a desktop so adding a 2 or even 3TB hdd shouldn't be a problem..

You can either buy a CS6 perpetual license, or Creative Cloud subscription.  Both will run on the two computers you mention.  You are allowed two installation with either version, but they must be for the same user. • [Solved] Tiling window managers and on-screen keyboards

I've got a small, old tablet pc with a 10" touchscreen, and was hoping to use a tiling window manager so that I could have an on-screen keyboard (onboard, cellwriter etc) stuck to the bottom third of the screen, and other applications 'fullscreened' in the rest of it, preferably in tabs.
I've tried a few tabbed tiling wm's (i3, xmonad, wmii, ion3) and while I can get the layout I want, I'm unable to use the onscreen keyboard due to focus switching - clicking on the 'keys' of the keyboard (or in fact, moving the cursor into it's frame/window/whatever) moves the focus to the keyboard, so it sends the typed text to itself.
Since tiling wm's are usually targeted at keyboard users, I'm having trouble finding which wm's listen to the onscreen keyboard's 'nofocus' properties. Does anyone know of any tiling wm's that respect that property and work with onscreen keyboards? Or even if there are simple config changes I can do to stop the keyboard from getting focus?
Failing that, any other window managers I could try? fwiw, I really liked twindy (http://www.niallmoody.com/twindy/about.htm) but it suffered from the same problem (and wasted a fair amount of space with its sidebar).
    Thanks!

Ah, thanks, that got me looking for and finding an xmonad patch that should make it not focus on onboard and cellwriter, amongst others: http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=177 Its a shame that the patch still isn't in the darcs repo, but I guess a working open office is more important that the few people using onscreen keyboards!
...time to compile from source... ugh - only got a single core running at 900kHz...

  • Cisco agent desktop on window 7 and working with IPCC 4.0

    Hi all,
i am using IPCC version 4.0.5 and Cisco Agent desktop client is installed on the windows XP machine
now we are planning to upgrade the all windows XP machine to window 7 32bits
before upgradeing OS from XP to windows 7 just want to know can CAD or CSD should be work onthe window 7 32bit
anyboday is using IPCC 4.X version with using CAD on the window 7 32 bits OS if yes CAD is woking fine with windows 7 or if any issue aries ?
    Thanks in advance.

CAD for IPCCX v4 does not support windows 7. See compatibility matrix:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/crs/express_compatibility/matrix/crscomtx.pdf
In my experience if you already have CAD installed and you upgrade the OS (without a fresh rebuild) CAD will work - but it is NOT supported. You should test this though.
You will not be able to install the older version of CAD on windows 7, the installer will give you errors.

    Hello, all!
I just upgraded my desktop computer to Windows 8 (love it!), but now my iPhone won't sync. I am stumped...even a friend who's an amazing computer tech doesn't know what to do.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    1) Uninstall iTunes, de-authorize your computer first...read here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
    2) Then download the latest iTunes installer from apple.
    3) Save installer to your downloads folder.
    4) Right click on installer and run as administrator...important you do this.
    5) Run the install as normal
    6) Open and authorize your computer in itunes.

  • [SOLVED] Window managers and sessions

Dear all, I hope this is the right place to pose this question. If not please move it.
A while back I made the jump to using just a window manager from relatively full featured DEs. While this took some work, I am generally pleased with the result. There is however one tiny thing that has been bugging me and that thing is shutting down (session management). I took to using
    systemctl shutdown
as the shutdown command. This works well, except that I have to kill at least the browsers in order for them not to greet me with a "closed unexpectedly" message. First exiting the WM and then shutting down works, but is a hassle.
So my question is this: How do I make sure that all of my processes are terminated cleanly when shutting down?

You may want to check out xkillall in the AUR - and you can read about a similar issue that lead to it's creation here.

**Note, I believe this download will install HP Smart Print, but not the Bing bar.

  • How can I customize window size and have it stay that way? It automatically maximizes the moment I click anywhere on the page.

I have added a large widescreen monitor and now have a two-screen set up. This taxed my old video card, so we replaced that, too. Then I updated Firefox. Now my window automatically maximizes. "Restore" is the same size as "Maximize", and I can resize it if I carefully drag and drop all four corners. But if I click on the top bar to relocate the resized window, it re-maximizes. I can't find any options or settings that allow me to fix the window size, lock a customized window size, etc. IE8 is not doing this, so I don't think it's the monitor or desktop settings.

Window sizes and positions are stored in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/localstore.rdf localstore.rdf] in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder].<br />
    <br />
Delete localstore.rdf or rename the file to localstore.rdf.sav in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder] to test if the file is corrupted.<br />
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf<br />
(caution: do not delete the localstore.rdf file in the Firefox program installation folder)<br />
    <br />
    Note:<br />
Deleting the file [http://kb.mozillazine.org/localstore.rdf localstore.rdf] will reset the customizations of the toolbars to the defaults.<br />
You can rename "localstore.rdf" to "localstore.rdf.sav" to test if that solves it.<br />
Then you can restore the customization by copying "localstore.rdf.sav" to "localstore.rdf" if it didn't work.

  • Airport Base Station Agent with Windows 7 and 8.1

I am running an older HP desktop with Windows 7 and installed/set up Airport Base Station Agent successfully. I am in the process of transferring primary network control over to a newer HP Laptop with 8.1. The older computer will be retired eventually.
Can both computers be running the Airport Base Station Agent and not disturb the Airport Base Station Agent setup?
Or, to avoid potential Windows 7/8 conflicts, should I install the Airport Base Station Agent on the Windows 8.1 and delete/uninstall it on the Windows 7 computer (and would that require setting up again?). I am using an Airport Extreme with an Airport Express (802.11n) as an extension. Both Windows systems are fully up to date with Microsoft and HP support.

I probably can go ahead and download/install Airport Utility on the new HP Envy Windows 8.1 (AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows) and not be worried about conflicts with the 2 computers and different Windows?
    There is no conflict.
    http://www.starwars.com/video/there-is-no-conflict
But the evil empire is still not 100% overwhelmed by the dark side.
You might need some apple stuff in there eventually.

  • X11 and window managers

i have tried to change window managers on x11 but everytime i try, it gives me an error saying that there is a manager already open. How do you quit the default window manager?

How do you quit the default window manager? You don't...that's not how window managers work:) You need to create a file called .xinitrc in your home directory, and have it start the window manager of your choice. If no such file exists, X11 uses the default one (/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc), which starts quartzwm. Easiest approach is to copy that file and then edit yours to make whatever changes you want.

  • Tialing window managers (dwm) and gtk themes

Is it posable to use GTK themes with tialing window managers?, i.e. to make firefox less ugly.
Also would it be posable to combine a tialing window manager with a pannel aplication, i.e. gnome-pannel. to make a more productive desktop expiriance?
I like tialing aplications (Blender), but sofar the tialing window managers I have tryed(wmii and dwm) dont seem terably useable. I am looking for somwthing that works more like Blender, create tiles by hovering the mouse over a border, right click, split. this prosess would be folowed in reverce to get rid of a tile. currantly running aplications can be assighned to a tile from a drop down list in the corner. aplications started from eather a terminal, or a auto hiding pannel at the top of the screen, which also displays system infomation.
Are there any DE's like this, or should i start coding one

rson451 wrote:As for the rest, I've never used Blender so I have no clue what you are talking about.
In Blender to subdivide the main window you right click on the border between two windows and select "Split Area" from the context menu, then you move the mouse to the place you want to split and click. If you start from a horizontal border you make a vertical split, and if you start from a vertical border you make a horizontal split. To remove a division you select "Join Areas" from the same context menu, and then click the window you want to remove. Windows have a sort of menu/status bar, and it has a popup menu from which you can select any of the "programs" (3d view, text editor, preferences, &c) that are part of Blender. Window borders can be dragged for resizing, of course.
And no, I don't know of any WM that works like this. The closest is probably StumpWM or Ratpoison—you divide and join windows in the same way, but it's keyboard controlled: "^t s" makes a horizontal split, "^t S" is vertical, and there's keystrokes for entering resize mode and removing a division as well. The keystrokes are fine for creating and deleting windows (and even better if you rebind them to use the 0, 1, 2, 3 keys like Emacs), but resizing is a pain.
