Desktop files are sometimes disappearing.

When I start my computer my desktop files are sometimes disappearing and when I tell the computer to organize the desktop they will return.  I have been using Mac's for 15 years and never have I had this problem until I updated to OS X Mountain Lion.  Can anyone tell me how to fix this.  Is it possible this problem is because I use two monitors?
Thank you for any help.
Mark

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
{ sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
{ launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
Step 4
ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal.

It reminds me of when a profile gets corrupt in Windows. Does anyone have any tips on recovering the files? He has tried techtools pro be it locks up on recovering the Documents folder.

  • Help! Moved a project from laptop to desktop files are missing

    hi,
sorry I am a premiere elements 7 newbie.
I started my project on my laptop but unfortunately it hadn´t enough space and was not aible to work with the data flow. i bought a desktop and made the mistake that I only copied the "premiere elements project" the document..........
then I organised the new pc and so on...opened the project but all my files (audio, pictures and videos) were missing.
can someone help me what to do? I don´t want to do it again...........
please note that I saved the documents (songs, pictures and avi) from different places on the laptop.
    thank you so much
    sabine from germany

    Sabine,
The Project file (.PREL) is just an XML database and contains none of the media, only links to where that media was, when it was Imported into PrE, plus instructions on what you did, as you edited in PrE.
Now, when one moves either a Project, or the media (your Assets) is to break those links. PrE goes looking, per the Path in the .PREL file. Unless the files are in that exact Path, it will throw up an error message, basicly saying, "help, I canno find these files." One has several choices at that point. One is to help PrE find the files, where they are now. Depending on the folder structure, if you help it find the first one that it's asking for, it'll automaticlaly link to all others in that folder, that it needs. If it then asks for another file, the chances are great that that file will be, maybe in a sub-folder. After that one is linked, it'll gather any that it needs in that sub-folder. This is repeated until all Assets have been found and linked. It could be find the first and all get linked or search around the sub-folders. This part just depends on the folder structure.
Another choice is to choose Media Off-line. What this does is allow one to edit with any Assets that are found, and just show all others as Off-line. Here comes a big warning. If, after choosing Media Off-line (actual syntax for all unfound media would be "Off-line All."), you chose to Save, and your original Project file is overwritten, you will now have to manually locate all Assets to get them relinked. If I were going to do any off-line editing, I'd always do a Save_As, or a Save_As_a_Copy and NOT a Save. As mentioned, if you do a Save, then you have to go in and manually relink all Assest, unlike the scenario in the second paragraph.
Now, if you media is shown as off-line and you do not have an original copy of your .PREL Project file, you'll need to go to the Project Panel. Your Assest will have a different icon, than before and the media will show as off-line. Rt-click on each one and choose Relink Media. Now, navigate to the new locations for that file and choose it to relink. I believe that this is the same in PrE, but that is the list of steps for PrPro. One must do this for each Asset, that you wish to bring back online. This method does take a lot of work, especially for large Projects with lots of Assets.
As Kodebuster says, copying over your Assets entire folder structure to the second machine and then helping PrE find the first file (and any additionals that are in sub-folders) is the best way to do this.
Again, remember that the .PREL file contains no media, just links to where PrE last saw those files.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Applications and files are all disappearing

After initially having trouble with opening a file in Adobe Lightroom, I have now discovered that everything on my computer is slowing disappearing or erasing itself. For example, I went to go look at my pictures and found that all the folders existed, but there was nothing in them. I also have nothing in my documents. Most of my applications in my dock had a question mark over it, except for those that were open, but when I closed it and tried to reopen, the question mark appeared so now basically I have a dock full of question marks. I then decided to try and open the applications through Finder, only to find them all zero kilobytes in size. While this is the case, when I click on Macintosh HD in Finder and look at the info, it says 500gb have been used despite the fact everything seems to be zero kilobytes. I am at a loss at what to do and would appreciate any help.

  • Desktop files disappearing ?

I have a 2010 white Macbook with OS 10.6, and halfway through this morning 85% of my desktop files and icons disappeared while I was elsewhere. I've looked in Spotlight for them, checked the trash, and they are nowhere to be seen - has anyone any idea what has happened and where they might have gone to ? It is bizarre, and even slightly amusing for a moment, but I've looked high and low for them on the machine and can't find them anywhere. Most of my work is contained in those files, so that is worrying, and 40GB's of iPhoto has also gone missing. I have backups, so not a problem, but I'd like to find out what has happened - or is happening - before I reload my desktop, especially if the same thing is going to happen again.

[1] MacDropAny has been busy working for me for months. The way I have it set up it simply syncs my desktop to a copy on the Dropbox server. It's never deleted anything, until yesterday, when it synced a nearly empty desktop back to itself, which as I said, and you then agreed, explains the disappearance on Dropbox.
[2] I'm unsure as to what you mean about Dropbox and copies. If I sync something on my computer to my Desktop, I can still access the file on the laptop with no internet connection, and indeed, often do so. I'm pretty sure you simply have the file on both ends. You can, after syncing, delete the file on either your computer or on your Dropbox without it affecting the other - unless you are using MacDropAny which simply syncs your chosen files instantaneously.
[3} "Business account" simply refers to the size of my Dropbox. I'm a one man band, no one else accesses it.
    CountDOWN
[3] gottit Interesting - leads us to suspect #[1] is perpetrator.
[2] Can you turn MacDropAny off temporarily? If so, run a test. Make a Test.txt file - save to desktop.. Drag/Drop from Mac Desktop to Dropbox icon. What happens to the original test.txt file on your Desktop?
In my experience with such an act, the original 'DIS'appears from the Desktop and 'A'ppears on Dropbox - i.e., as if you moved it on your Mac from one folder to another folder - NOT copied from one HD to another HD. The latter is actually what is happening is it not?
Be interesting to know if MacDropAny prevents  the normal Dropbox behavior I just described.
Dropbox was intended to behave just like another folder on your Mac. No need to SYNC cuz you are working on the file from the Dropbox folder
[1] I am now trying to figger out why you need this syncing App to be involved? Why not just use Dropbox normally? Doesn't solve the mystery....
[0] BLAST OFF !! It is clear that the files/folders on Dropbox disappeared first. MacDropAny then synced that fact. We are back to
Why did they disappear from Dropbox? Not quite square one, but I'll bet that Dropbox support could have some input. Bet they have it all backed up to where they could restore Dropbox to ±the time before the poltergeist struck.

  • An index of my desktop files appears in firefox. why is it there? does this mean my personal files are accessible from the internet? how can i make sure this goes away and stops?

i am seeing and index of my personal files on firefox. what is this? why is it there? how can i make it go away? does this mean my desktop files are on the internet? can someone explain clearly and simply (i am not tech saavy at all) thank you

This issue can be caused by an old bitmap version of the Helvetica or Geneva font or (bitmap) fonts that Firefox can't display in that size.
Firefox can't display some old bitmap fonts in a larger size and displays gibberish instead.
You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or see if you can find a True type version that doesn't show the problem.
There have also been fonts with a Chinese name reported that identify themselves as Helvetica, so check that as well.
Use this test to see if the Helvetica font is causing it (Copy & Paste the code in the location bar and press Enter):
    <pre><nowiki>data:text/html,
    Helvetica<br><font face="Helvetica" size="25">abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</font><br>
    Helvetica Neue<br><font face="Helvetica Neue" size="25">abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</font>
    </nowiki></pre>
You should reset the network.http prefs that show user set on the about:config page.<br />
Not all websites support http pipelining and if they do not then you can have issues with images or other problems.

  • Desktop files automatically replicated  in every folder

My desktop files are automatically being saved in every desktop folder. When I empty them from a folder into the Trash, the file also disappears from the desktop. I ran a virus scan, but not a virus that the scan could detect.
    Thoughts?

Now every folder on the desktop contains every item on the desktop.
That's an obvious impossibility, so I'd have to assume that you're misunderstanding something.  Can you post a screenshot or two to show us what you're seeing?

  • I've lost all the files that were on the desktop.  All the folders  are still there with subfolders but the files have all disappeared.  Someone please help!

It's been over a month since I accessed my files for work. (microsoft office, photos, videos) Today when I came in to work I realized that all the files on my desktop had disappeared. (it's just the desktop) I didn't do anything with my computer.  I didn't use my computer for almost the entire month.    I don't know where they are or what happened.  I really need these files back ASAP..... help please!

Unless the files were dumped in the Trash unintentionally, your files are still on your computer, somewhere. It's pretty easy to put files or folders in places without knowing it, but there is a good technique to find your data.'
Think over a file or folder whose name is familiar. Then, press Cmd-Space at the same time, which brings up Spotlight - the easiest way to locate files, folders, history, and much more. If you end up with a blank the first time, try again until you have a hit. If you have a hit, note the location of the files/folder; it's likely that all of your lost documents are in the same place.
Post if you have success, or need more help!

This is sometimes caused by Bad Blocks on the Hard Drive.
If 10.7, hold down Command-R at startup, and choose Disk Utility.
If 10.6 or earlier, boot to the Installer/Utilities DVD, answer only the "what language" question and wait for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu.
Select your Hard drive by Make & Model and check the SMART Status (lower right of the right window). Choose "Repair Disk" . This ONLY examines and repairs the Directory area of the drive, but may improve things a bit. If errors cannot be repaired, you may need a stronger tool, or a new drive.

    The title sums it up.

At that point I'm forced to push the shutdown button on the tower and reboot, then all is well until the next time.

Cloud backup plans can slow your Mac down, and if used simultaneously with your Mac's networking, or you have an unreliable internet connection, could be the cause of your freezes.  You may be better off seeing if turning off iCloud temporarily helps.   This can especially be a problem with non-Apple routers whose firmware may not be up to date.   Multitasking with backups can lead to corruption of your backups.  Time Machine should only backup to hard drives twice the capacity of the original, otherwise it spends a lot of time trying to discover which archives to eraes to maintain room.  Here are some other options:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Energy Saver can also create problems for backups, as it takes a moment for the Mac to recognize the connection.  Use screen saver instead of Energy Saver when backing up.  System Preferences lets you control both.   Putting hard drives to sleep when backing up is ill advised.

Greetings from a Photoshop Newbie. I need a computer, preferably a Mac laptop, with some serious processing power. I take photos with a Pentax 645Z; files are 50MB raw. I upload from Adobe Bridge and manipulate the photo, sometimes turning them into files in excess of 250MB. I cannot resize as the large files are needed for enlargements. Have all sorts of problems trying to manipulate, add effects and saving most large files. I need some serious processing power. Can anyone suggest what Mac i should purchase? I thank you in advance for your help :-)

It sounds as if you're having some system-related problems now, unrelated to processing power as such. In particular, a buggy video driver can cause everything to slow to a crawl.
Medium format files are big, true, but not so big as to cause significant slowdowns on a normally functioning and reasonably current computer. A laptop will always be slower than a well-equipped desktop system, though. Mac vs PC plays no part in this, performance is unrelated to platform.
Bottlenecks are different in ACR and Photoshop, so that should give you a clue. ACR is computing-intensive and mostly limited by CPU speed. Photoshop, however, is mostly bandwidth-intensive and mainly limited by memory and disk throughput. It's also sensitive to GPU issues.

Enter the name of the crashed application or process (Finder) in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
