Desktop/Finder won't display external hd's, but will in Disk Utility

Yesterday, I replaced the original hard drive on my late 2008 Macbook Pro (OSX 10.9.4, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory) with a 1TB SATA hard drive matching the data transfer speeds of the original hard drive. I backed up via Time Machine (on a 2TB) and even cloned onto a second external hard drive (now called 3TB) and had recovered documents (less than 100GB) from a crashed external hard drive (1TB from OWC brand) onto a third one (now called "1TB portable") with the intent of merging the files from the 1TB OWC crashed hard drive via the 1TB portable back onto an internal hard drive which now had some elbow room. My problem is that after erasing & restoring the new internal hard drive using Disk Utility & Time Machine and reinstalling Mountain Lion and then Mavericks, the 3TB external & 1TB portable external hard drives went missing on my desktop and on Finder, but were still listed in the sidebar in the "Disk Utility". Both external hard drives displayed and were able to be browsed through prior to my Time Machine backup & internal hard drive replacement. Both the 3TB & 1TB portable drives were purchased new and specifically said they were for Mac OS X. All drives are virus-free and are physically working. Fortunately, on the 2008 Mac, the new internal hard drive is working beautifully like a brand-new Mac. Additionally, the 3TB & 1 TB portable are NOT recognizable by other Mac's, but, again, were recognized and operational before I reinstalled OS X ML & Mavericks and restored from Time Machine. Also, I've set my Finder Preferences to be able to see them. Both were Mac formatted. The only additional relevant info I think to add would be that in installing my hard drive, my OSX was Mavericks both before and after and that the Time Machine backup was within within the hour before replacing my hard drive so not much changed there time-wise. Once again, I had verified successful data transfer to the 3TB external & 1TB portable external hard drives immediately before Time Machine backup on the separate third drive. 1) How do I recover the backup data from the 1TB portable drive that I already recovered from the crashed OWC drive and 2) since I was obviously misapplying information from the forums somehow, how should I appropriately clone/transfer data in the first place? I decided to upgrade to Mavericks and experienced the same symptoms as above. The machine would not recognise the disk in finder. Disk utilities could see the disk but the partition was greyed out and several attempts to repair disk were to no avail. I am afraid that I made matters worse by unsuccessfully trying to reformat the disk.
I made a backup of my macbook to another older mac and tried the hard disk with an old Windows laptop running Vista. It recognised the disk but said it need to be formatted. This I did.
In the mean time I had upgraded my Macbook from 10.9.3.to 10.9.4. I am not sure if this made a difference.
I then plugged the hard disk back in to the Macbook. It recognised it immediately and said that it needed initialising. This I did successfully and (MAC os extended Journal). The disk now works perfectly with 10.9.4 on the Macbook and I have been able to use Time Machine with it to make a backup.
I know this does not help with rescuing data from the hard disc but at least I now have a usable hard disk!

After installing OS X Mavericks, my 2 USB HD don't show up in Finder, but do appear in Disk Utility. With the previous OS X had no troubles!

If they show up on the Desktop baltwo is correct since the finder does see them but the default preference hides them from the sidebar on the left.
Click the word finder by the Apple and choose preferences.
Choose the tab along the top that says sidebar.
Check away at those boxes.

Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

Hp 7525 Photosmart printer won't scan to my PC but will scan to other PCs on the LAN. I tried to install the printer software but it says it is already installed. Do I have a security setting wrong?
Other PC names show up on the printer's touch screen but not mine. We are all on the same wireless subnet with the printer at a fixed IP address.
I can print from my PC and scan from my PC but I can't scan from the printer touchscreen to my PC.

You may have to start from your computer first:
    Double click printer icon on desktop,
    Select Manage Scan to Computer
    Click Enable -
    Restart your printer to see, is your machine in the list ?

External hard drive not accessible, but visible in Disk Utility

I recently did a clean install on my iMac, and I cannot access my external hard drive through Finder. The system does detect the hard drive in Disk Utiliy, however Finder cannot see it. I also tried About this Mac > More info > Storage and it does not show up there. I checked my Finder settings per other threads and Finder is set to show all HD's.
The Disk Utility allows me to "Eject" the drive without any problems, but I cannot access anything on it.
When I plug this in Windows, I hear the Windows USB chime. I do not think that the HD went bad because it has not worked since I did a clean install on my iMac, and of course, all my documents are backed up to this drive.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

There is recovery software such as FileSalvage which may be able to find something.

You can download a demo copy which will tell you what it will recover if that appears worth while you must pay for to recover the files.
You are going to need another disk for FileSalvage to recover the files. If should be at least as large as the disk being recovered.

Unless you have a copy of the iPod backup file from the previous computer installation you are out of luck. If yo have that file move it to your computer and restore the iPod from that backup. Otherwise, you will have to restore the iPod to factoery defaults/new iPod and lose all your app date. That is the way it is since the iPod sees the computer as a new computer/iTunes library. That backup file is located:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

On my Mac (vers 10.7.5) I use Disk Utilites to burn a DVD. The DVD won't play on the Mac but will play on my Windows PC and on a DVD player. A DVD created on my PC will play on the Mac. Any ideas why this is happening?

I used iDVD to create an IMG file
You created the video DVD, the IMG file, with iDVD and just burned it with Disk Utility. As Klaus1 pointed out Disk Utility can't create video DVDs.

I am intermittently having the same problem. I can send email, but once the Mail application is opened, it will only pull emails in from the server one time and then I have to "Force Quit" and restart the application to receive incoming mail again. I've tried restarting the computer. I've made sure I have all the system updates. I've checked for conflicts between applications and so far nothing fixes the problem. Once in a while, Mail starts functioning normally on its own, but in a few days it goes back to the same old problem. Has anyone figured out what if going on with this isse?

Desktop icons won't display on Desktop

I recently installed a couple of what seemed to be interesting menubar items (MenuStrip and Isolator). Shortly after (not concurrent with) I lost the icons that show up on the Desktop of files in the Desktop folder. The files are all intact - nothing lost, they just don't show up on the Desktop.
I've removed these two applications using AppZapper, run the new DiskWarrior 4.1.1, repaired the permissions, run repair disk from Disk Utility, reinstalled Leopard from the DVD, and now I'm at a loss on how to bring back those icons.
I'm running OS X 10.5.5 on an Intel Mac Mini. I use a Newer MiniStack as my boot drive. If I boot from the internal drive (which is virtually virgin from the day of purchase), the Desktop icons from that user are displayed as they should be.
Is there someway to "rebuild" the Desktop or otherwise bring things back to normal?

Added info:
I also recently tried using Path Finder 5. It also has been "shredded."
I was just poking around my Desktop and found that clicking on the Desktop itself while another app (say like Safari) is frontmost, clicking won't bring the Finder to the front. Sounds like something left over from Path Finder, though I deleted all its prefs using AppZapper.

CS4 Live View Won't Display External CSS

I have a simple .html file - all located on my local machine
with an external .css file located in the same folder as the .html
file. Everything displays fine in a browser. Live View won't
display items in my external css file. It displays items in the
inline file fine. If I move items from the external to the inline
file they will appear. Links are relative to the Document in the
site setup. No default images folder defined (images are in a
folder called "images").
I know it's something simple and dunderheaded. Just getting
back into html after a little hiatus. Any help greatly
appreciated.

Too many files on 10.4 Desktop - Finder won't load

2.66 DualCore Intel Xeon + OSX 10.4.10 + 2Gb DDR2 DIMM + 230Gb ST3250820AS + OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A
Despite recurrent warnings, a relative kept leaving too many files on the Desktop, up to 300 files (JPGs, downloaded archives). Last week, after attempting to move/copy them to a folder, OSX crashed, and now Finder won't load; after password screen, menu bar and Dock appear, the 'MyDay' app (from Entourage) starts bouncing, and system freezes. Sometimes it goes back to password screen, and from there again to a frozen, empty finder with dead mouse pointer. Other times the spinning clock or wheel remain spinning forever.
Tried DiskUtility, repaired disk and permissions, reset PRAM, no dice.
Tried to boot off the 10.4.10 DVD, it doesn't allow to run OSX from the disc (I have a vague recollection of doing this once, but...)
Started in SafeBoot mode, finder froze at same stage.
Re-Installed OSX 10.4.10 in Archive and Install mode, same freeze at same stage.
The only explanation for the crash, as no updates/new app installing happened, is that there are, again, too many loose files on the desktop and as it tries to load the Finder it crashes. I'm hauling the machine ASAP to try with my own Intel to try access his disk via FireWire target mode but worry the same thing will happen on my system, that it will balk at too many files.
Is there a way to try to fix this without resorting to clean install (needless to say, last backup was months ago)? If I install Leopard on that disk (it comes out fine in Disk Utility) will the same thing happen as soon as it tries to load the Finder? Is there a way to boot 10.4 off a CD/DVD?

Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.
