Desktop freezes to solid blue screen. Why?

Computer will freeze with solid blue screen slightly descending to lighter blue at bottom with horizontal (very faint) lines. Please help. Not computer savvy. Can't afford professional tax hourly rate. Thank you thank you.!!

If your data isn't backed up, and you don't have another Mac, you may have to save up and splurge to save your data first with data recovery program and an external hard drive:

Before doing any more troubleshooting.
If you want to do something that has minimal risk to your data, but still can be more risky than using a data recovery tool directly, if the hard drive is marginal, see this tip on repairing directories:

If you have replaced the PRAM battery in the last 4 years, you can try resetting the PRAM:

  • Firefox keeps freezing, resulting in blue screen errors

Whenever I use Firefox, it runs just fine for about 10 minutes, then it stops responding, and doesn't work for 30 seconds to a minute. Sometimes when it does this, I go into Task Manager to shut down Firefox, and when it shuts down, my computer screen glitches up, then it instantly blue screens.
This problem started happening to me right when I updated from version 3.6 to 5.0 a few months ago, and now it does this on every version of Firefox I try using. Infact, version 3.6 doesn't work at all now, that version freezes the moment the browser opens, and sometimes blue screens as well.
Does anyone know why Firefox continuously freezes and give blue screen errors?
Also, the only extension I have running is Adblock Plus. The browser still freezes when I have Adblock disabled.

Wait so you are saying that if you update the BIOS prior to imaging, then you do not get the error? As part of practice, I always update the BIOS on a new system before imaging.
For removing drivers, you can use DISM after mounting your image.
    DISM /IMAGE:c:\folder\mount /GET-DRIVERS
This will show you a list of drivers. If you have more drivers than the CMD console can show, you may want to send the output to the text file. Information format will show the original INF name, the version and the "new" file name as it exists
in the image. When removing a driver you need to specify this "new" name, for example oem53.inf.
    Dism /Image:C:\test\offline /Remove-Driver /Driver:OEM53.infThen unmount /commit changes.See here for documentation.

When i plug my Ipod touch 4th generation in it goes to the apple screen and then shuts off and then turns back on and goes to a solid blue screen.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Does anyone elses iPhone 5 just randomly shut off or freeze on a blue screen after only having it for a week??

I got a white 16G iPhone 5 last Sunday (Jan 6th 2013) and I have already been on the phone with apple once and in the store twice about this issue. The phone randomly shuts itself off or freezes on a blue screen for 5-30 minutes at a time. Apple reset my phone thinking that would fix the issue, it didnt. I went into the Sherway location while it was frozen and they told me i couldnt get an appointment until tomorrow so ill have to wait... I'm hoping that they just gave me a dud of a phone and that when i go back in tomorrow they will just give me a new phone because this is getting ridiculous. if this problem continues once they finally give me a new one than i suggest that no one else buys the iPhone 5. I had the 4 and had only one problem in a year and a half, and i've had more in one week with this model. Let me know if anyone else is experiencing this too or if my phone is just a dud.

First I would try restoring from your backup. If that does not work I would restore to factory-new condition and manually add apps and other things back on since there may be something corrupted in your backup.

  • Macbook won't shut down or restart. it freezes at the blue screen.

first time this happened i didn't notice. But then everytime I shutdown my macbook it freezes at the blue screen until all the battery is dranged, so I have to shut it down by pressing the button. Then I tried to restart it and the same thing happened!
I don't remember downloading any new apps that night that might have caused this.

  • IMac G5 PowerPC boots up and freezes at light-blue screen

PowerPC G5 20" iMac, 2.0GHz, +260 GB harddrive, 2 GB of DDR SDRAM
    Leopard OS 10.5.6
Computer starts up and freezes at light-blue screen. Mouse still moves, bu no keyboard commands work. Only holding the power button will shut down the computer.
    Tried the following:
    - Able to boot into Safe-mode only.
    - Ran OS Disk Utility to repair permissions and also MacTuneUp 3.6.0, and no change
    - Tried changing start-up to boot from OS 10.5.6 DVD and still freezes with light-blue screen. Safe-mode allowed me to run Disk Utility but no difference.
    - If I leave the frozen light-blue screen, eventually the iMac power-saving mode darkens the screen, until I move the mouse (then light-blue again and still frozen).
    - I left my iPhone connected to the iMac, and when starting up the computer the iPhone started charging. When the light blue screen froze the iPhone stopped charging.
    - tried starting computer with Options + Command keys
    - tried + Options-Command-P-R untill you hear two beeps: Reset NVRAM (restart 3x)
    - tried Resetting the SMU > Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord. > Wait 10 seconds.> Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer. > Let go of the power button. > Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
    Questions:
    > When booting from OS 10.5.6 DVD, Should I run Time Machine Restore system from Backup?
    > I can work fine in Safe-mode all day, but limited resources. Is this a software or hardware issue?

Based on what you have you tried I would guess it is hardware problem.
First iMac's without camera and with GeForce FX 5200 graphics card are known of having capacitor failures which can cause the machine either to become unstable in different situations or fail to boot up at all. I have repaired many of them and changing capacitors brought completedly dead iMac (no power, no nothing) up to life so capacitors mean a lot.
Second and third it's mainly the graphics card which fails, causing the machine to fail to boot, become unstable or boot with artifact patterns in picture.
There has also been power supply issues and Apple did issue a recall back then, I think you can still find article about it and check if your machine has serial number which fits to that recall problem. This way you could check if you should suspect power supply going bad.
Capacitor problem is usually easy to identify (open up the case and look if those can-like things are bulging or swollen) and quite easy to repair if you have bit experience in computers and soldering, iFixit.com provides great disassembly instructions. Graphics card problem is harder to identify because in that case it is the solder which breaks under the graphic chip so you cannot actually see the defect. It is also harder to repair atleast if you want the machine to work long time after that repair. Basically you would need to heat the GPU enough to reflow solder connections.
Because the machine can boot into safe mode I'm suspecting that you have some of these issues I described, safe mode does not utilize hardware at full power and disable full graphics acceleration for example.

  • Solid blue screen - is the computer dead?

My 2004 iMac has been a champ.  But it would not reboot yesterday -   I get a solid blue screen with the pointer .......pointer works - nothing else loads.  Is this the end for my iMac?

Do you hear a chime when it starts up?  Have you tried booting from the install disc and running
    Disk Utility
       1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
       3. Click the First Aid tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
And run the Apple Hardware test that came with your machine install discs as well.

  • Repeating mouse freeze followed by blue screen then back to normal

Hi guys, if anyone can help with this, I'd really appreciate it... it's really driving me nuts! Every few minutes, my mouse freezes, the screen then goes totally blue for a 10-20 secs. The screen then goes back to normal for a second or two then back to a transparent blue screen (showing my desktop etc. behind it) for another 10-20 secs then back to normal after maybe one or two more flashes of blue screen. It's got so bad that I can't use the computer any more.
    It's a G4 (2x1.25Ghz) with mirrored doors running 10.3.9 with 1GB of RAM
    Thanks,
    David.

There are so many things that there is no clear symptom or cause as to why the system is partially hung.
I would familiarize myself with the system, buy a book (or two) starting with "Mac OS X: The Missing Manual"
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/resources/
About This Mac... more -> System Profile
will display memory condition, log files (system, panic, etc)
Depends on how much memory, what you are doing, whether you have a driver issue, or maybe a corrupt preference, font, directory.
Unlikely it was a parity error, but if it was a kernel panic, it would not leave it up to your imagination, it would be in clear black and white.
You could run your Apple Hardware Test; Disk Warrior (or just Apple's if you haven't yet bought DW).
Backup and boot from another drive to run repairs.
I would be more concerned over lack of a UPS and a power issue/outage or 'brownout.'

  • Boot freezes at blank blue screen

I am completely stuck. I have a Powermac G4, which just today became suddenly unstable---apps crashing when I tried to quit them, everything freezing, logging out didn't work. So I shut it down and restarted.
Now I get the chime, the apple screen, and then the blue screen (and a mouse pointer) but at that point nothing else happens. No window showing services starting up, just a blank blue screen.
I can log into single-user mode, and the file system checks out ok. I did the cmd-opt-P-R, I reset-nvram from the Forth interpreter, all that.
I can boot verbosely, and it doesn't tell me anything because the hanging happens after it leaves the text screen and the UI starts.
Question: what should I do? Here's a related question: from single-user mode, is there any way to get files off the computer, towit accessing a USB drive or the network?

    1. Start up in Safe Mode.(shift key at startup)
    a. Drag the Fonts folder from the Mac OS 9 System Folder (not the Mac OS X System folder) to the desktop.
    b. Drag the Fonts folder from ~/Library/Fonts to the desktop.
    b. Restart the computer in Mac OS X.
    c. If this solves the problem....you have a corrupt font in one of the above font folders
    2. Remove incompatible third-party startup items.
    a. Start up in Safe Mode.(shift at startup)
    b. Open the Mac OS X hard disk.
    c. Drag third-party items out of ....
    /Library/StartupItems .......
/System/Library/StartupItems ... Place them on the desktop .... If you're unsure whether an item is a third-party item or an Apple-installed item, don't move it.
    d.Restart the computer.
Note.. If this resolves the issue, add the Startup Items one at a time until the symptom occurs again. That way you'll know which one is incompatible. Repeat these steps and remove the incompatible item.

  • Freezing on a blue screen?

My computer began freezing intermittenly while listening to music yesterday, so I powered down the computer and restarted it. When it came back up, it froze on a blue screen. I began looking for answers on the internet, and saw "Safe Mode" so I powered up my computer using that, and that is now what I am on. But what do I do now?

Reboot now. Safe Mode checked your HD and may have repaired your problem. If not, boot from your install disc and run your Disk Utility.

I have disabled the video adaptor on the motherboard.
    I cannot complete with administrative permissions;

    Error: 0x800f080c
    Feature name Microsoft-Windows-RemoteFX-EmbeddedVidoCap-Setup-Package is unknown
Question 1 - because video card on motherboard disabled, do I still need to complete this command?
    VM’s
**I’m not interested in VDI but more Remote Desktop Sessions and the option to ‘pinch and zoom with Windows 8.1 tablets**
VM1 - Windows 2012 R2 configured as generation 1 that is fully patched.
This VM is able to start up and run until I add the new hardware for the RemoteFX Video adaptor from within the Hyper V settings. When I start the VM the server blue screens. I have tried multiple VM’s with 2012 but same thing
If I created the VM as Generation 2 I am able to start the VM but the RemoteFX adaptor doesn’t appear in the device manager. I have read generation 2 isn’t compatible with RemoteFX.
VM2 – *Testing purposes* - Windows 8.1 Enterprise configured as generation 1 that is fully patched.
This VM I am able to start up and run the VDI after the RemoteFX video adaptor is installed, also the correct adaptor appears in the device manager. This seems to at least work correctly but I cannot pinch and zoom and the experience is poor.
GPU summary within the Hyper V settings state there are 4 physical GPU’s all of which can be used with RemoteFX and that 1 virtual machine are using the GPU (Windows 8.1 enterprise VM)
    Firewalls off, latest RDP clients
I have read you should be able to use Windows 2012 R2 and we should be able to use the sessions with pinch and zoom but now and then you come across something that tells me different.
Question 2 – I need this to work with Windows 2012 R2 so we can use Remote Desktop Sessions
and the tablets can use pinch and zoom, anyone tell me what I may be doing wrong?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
As per my research, you need to run the command although video adapter is disabled on motherboard. If you install the RemoteFX cap driver, the integrated video adapter is disabled while the operating system is running.
For more information you can refer beneath article.
    1. RemoteFX (with Hyper-V) is a serious business tool. For games.
    2. Configure RemoteFX in Hyper-V running Windows Server 2012 with low end GPU
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Freezing up and blue screen on iPhone 5S - help???

My iPhone has started going slow and freezing up, then a blue screen appears and my phone reboots again (especially if I've been on apps like Notes/Calculator/Calender for any length of time) I don't really fancy having to back up then restore my whole phone again considering it's quite new and wondering if there's any other way of sorting it rather than having to get it sent away or a new one sent out.

It's a jailbreak which is associated with this problem
If it isn't jailbroken, you should try these steps as needed:
    1. Reset phone (no data loss): press both home and power buttons for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears
    2. Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
    3. Restore iOS using iTunes, also restoring a backup
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    4. Restore iOS as a new iPhone, without restoring a backup
    5. If restoring as new doesn't help, there is a hardware problem that needs evaluation by Apple or an Apple authorized service provider.

  • Freezing and then blue screen every now and then

I have just bought a iMac G5 with iSight and every now and then the machine will freeze for 2-10 seconds, then go to a blue screen. Audio is only affected when it freezes and all background tasks seem to run without issue. The blue screen can stay up for about anywhere between 3 to 40 seconds.
Anyone seen this or have any idea?

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Good time to check the startup disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% free disk space.*
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode
