Desktop freezes while encrypting using Filevault 2 on Lion

I recently decided to activate Filevault 2. This is my first time using the service in all of OS X. At first turning it on went well, gave me some "safety net" code, wrote it down, and submitted it to Apple for safekeeping too. Then it told me to click restart. The login screen went up fast, which the guide says that it is something I should expect. After logging in with my passwd, I went straight to the Desktop.
Now this is where the problem is, the Desktop if frozen. Some icons aren't loaded and the SmartReporter is Yellow. I can move the mouse cursor, but it is still useless. I don't know what's going on. The guide says I can use my computer normally while the disk is being encrypted, but the truth is I can't. I can wait for few hours but this might be going in the wrong direction and I don't want to waste much time. I'd like to force shutdown the computer but it might destroy my data. I'd appreciate some help here. Thanks!

I'm curious, some people say don't use timevault as it's terrible and doesn't play nice with time machine. Others say definitely use a 3'rd party application. I have used and liked products like Truecrypt and PGP.
Can anyone give me advice on the pros and cons of filevault?? Should I skip filevault and use another application?

I would say that Apple has done a good job with the creation of FileVault and would likely recommend that you use it. It's impossible for anyone to get into your FileVault without your username and password, or the master password of the computer, and so if you take good care of that sensitive information then your computer should be completely safe of intruders. I am not exactly sure how FileVault works with Time Machine, but it should also be known for general knowledge that encrypting your home folder does increase the chances of your home drive becoming corrupt, though you would run this risk with third party applications as well. Essentially FileVault does a good job for what it is for, and you don't even know that it is working, and for that reason i recommend it.

Computer freezes while in use, then problems occure with rebooting...

For some time now, I am facing a strange problem with my Mac. This is my second MacBook and I am a Mac user since 2008.
My latest version is a MacBook Pro 13", version mid 2012 with an optical drive, which I have purchased in May 2013. My Mac features a 512 SSD and 8 GB RAM. I am using Yosemite as the OS.
To describe the problem: At the beginning my Mac works normally. I have several applications running. Then all of a sudden single applications start to freeze. The “spinning ball” appears, as if the computer is busy processing something, telling me to wait for a second. The problem extends to other applications and also the “cmd+alt+esc” key combination for the task manager does not work anymore. Hence, I am commencing a forced shut down by holding the power button down. When now restarting the computer, it won’t boot up properly. Instead a folder with question mark appears and sometimes, but more rarely, a prohibitive sign. The booting problem remains after several additional forced shutdowns and restarting again and again. Interestingly, I have figure out a way of solving the problem temporarily: I just turn around the Mac and gently knock on the backside a few times. Now it will restart again and function normally until the problem reoccurs a few days later.
Could there be a hardware problem? Is the storage not properly connected? Could there be a lose contact of some sort?

The symptoms you describe indicate that the internal HDD or the internal SATA connection is faulty.
Boot into the recovery partition and select Disk Utility from the 4 option menu.
Run Disk Utility First Aid>, Verify and Repair.
If unsuccessful, the HDD must be replaced. If successful, the internal SATA should be replaced.

My external monitor and MacBook Pro screen turn different colours and freeze while in use - only restarting the computer will refresh the display. Is there a way this can be fixed? It is happening more and more frequently.

The monitor is Philips brand and works perfectly fine usually. Every now and again it will happen mid-use and I have to constantly re-start my laptop.

The F7 key should also toggle between extended desktop and mirroring. If you open the lid on the PB, you should see that the F7 key is imprinted with two overlapping rectangles. That's supposed to represent the mirroring function and pressing the key should toggle the function (unless you had previously turned off the function keys).

Laptop freezes while in use

I have a Satellite series M45-S269. I recently added RAM memory (2 gig total). Since I've added the memory, the computer now will suddenly freeze. This happens every time I turn on the computer. At first it would take 10 - 15 - 20 minutes but now the computer will only work for 5 to 10 minutes before it freezes. I have to press and hold the power button to reset.
I can't believe adding RAM memory would cause this problem but prior to this my laptop worked great and I never had problems.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be causing this?

FileVault for Mountain Lion on a Desktop (not laptop)

Hi:
Any advice on these queries regarding FileVault would be greatly appreciated:
1) Most generally, what are the disadvantages of the new version of FileVault for encrypting a desktop computer? It seems like in the old days this was frowned upon due to bugs, but is this still true with the new version of FileVault? We have lots of confidential information on our work desktops. Occasionally computers break and must go out to be fixed. It would be great to have all the data strongly protected.
2) If one were to encrypt a desktop with FileVault, would it still work with an encrypted Time Machine backup? Are there any problems we should know about when backing up when Filevault is enabled using Time Machine?
3) If one has a weak password for a Guest account and a strong password for your own account, and the entire desktop machine is encrypted with FileVault, is there any way someone could use the weak password on the Guest account to access the data on the account with the strong password?

The answer you accepted as a solution is absolutely false. Not only do you not need to purchase ML, but the App Store version will not install on your computer.
There is no need for you to create a standalone installer. In the very unlikely event that you ever need to reinstall the OS, you can do it by booting into Recovery or Internet Recovery.

it's taking more than 45 seconds (sometimes a full minute) to load pages.
my internet speeds are 35 mbps download and 6.35 mpbs upload, so it's not my internet connection.
i have deleted the cache files and the system preferences.
i'm finding that chrome is faster, but i'm seeing slowness there too.
in encrypted using filevault 2.0 yesterday, all software is up to date.
can anyone please help me with this? i don't want to have to turn off filevault.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have a wrong owner. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.

Remote restart for a Mac using FileVault 2 encryption?

Does anyone know of a way to perform a remote restart for a Mac using FileVault 2 encryption? I have some remote Macs for which I'd like to enable full disk encryption with FileVault, but would prefer not to make a physical trip to those machines whenever they need a reboot. I strongly suspect the answer to this question is "No", without some form of IP KVM, but I figured I'd double-check. If anyone knows of any reasonably priced Mac-compatible KVMs that would be great too. Thanks.

Why does my entire computer freeze while opening or using After Effects or Premiere Pro CS5?

Just built a computer to meet all requirements for Adobe, Autodesk 3ds Max, and UDK, for school.

As for anything else giving me issues I haven't noticed anything besides a previous Graphics Card wasn't supported very well at all with 3ds Max, it would freeze while using the material editor which was fixed with replacing a GTX550 ti with a more compatible GTX480. Thought maybe the upgrade would also solve the fact that almost everytime I go to start up and/or use After Effects or Premiere Pro CS5 my whole system freezes. Whether or not I'm doing anything, it occasionally happened during "Scrubbing" the timeline, but also during the splash load up screen. Would take the time to wait for several minutes but nothing would change. Hard reboot was needed. After countless hours of searching online I stumbled upon what is called an "Unlock" for Premiere Pro/After Effects to allow accelerated GPU and CUDA cores. Simple procedure, seems as if things go faster... When it is working. But still, I encounter freezes on my entire system. It isn't a crash back to Windows or anytihng. Just a complete freeze on the entire system. I have not extensively used other Adobe programs besides Photoshop quite briefly just so I could open menus and force a freeze within 5 minutes and noticed nothing wrong. Which in AE & PP just running through any of the menu windows can quickly cause a sudden freeze.
note* I have alternated shutting off and turning on OpenGL as well as multiprocessing. Doesn't matter, it really doesn't seem to change much of anything.
Alas, I am absolutely sure, after checking and re-checking 80+ hours over the past 2 weeks that yes, everything is updated as far as each individual program, software or hardware will allow me to update them. I have reinstalled Windows as well as each program up to 3 times, and 1 system (restore?) I had Windows dump everything, started from scratch, backed up nothing. To reinstall everything from scratch, while not installed several "Utilities" or software components from stuff like the Motherboard and its XFAST USB/LAN or whatever, thinking maybe it was cluttering up anything.
Please, if anyone has any ideas upon this and could give me advice, whether you notice any other incompatibilities or anything. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
note* I do not have a wired Keyboard or mouse to disable the USB plugin and attempt that route.. at least not yet, its on my list of things to do. Also, I did run Memtest86+ during a boot and it claims that everything there had passed 100%. I am not "overclocking" anything either. I just wanted something I could work smoothly on, that would have decent rendering capabilities. I used to use my girls' laptop which was an HP with 3GB RAM and never experienced crashes or freezes and I could use AE, PPro, 3ds Max with some lag but not any issues. Rendering took forever on it, but I usually avoided that 'cuz it would start heating up pretty fierce. Saved my rendering for school computers where I could. But either way, now I have this expensive piece and it is getting frustrating that I cannot work on it.
note* Also, incase it does help, I have Windows as well as any major components installed onto the C: drive (aka SSD for my system) while all my secondary software, such as Adobe, Autodesk, etc. are all installed directly to my D: drive (or HDD) And everything is set up to go through Windows Firewall as well.

Thanks all. I have just tried a few things, installing them onto the C drive as you all specified as not being one of them. I can understand it, but at the same time i have a classmate who has their software on a seperate drive and it runs smoothe. I'm on my second GPU in 2 weeks, unless I have terrible luck it seems doubtful being that I can run games and a majority of the software no problem. Through further testing around with a corded mouse and keyboard I've noticed the following...
The computer freezes entirely only when I'm performing a "scrubbing" action or using a mouse. Left clicking, scrolling, or moving it around. Otherwise if I do not use the mouse and I make all my actions, such as "scrubbing" in AE via "Page Up & Down" keys, there's no freeze and it preloads the preview no problem.
"Scrubbing" does not load a preview (the green bar doesn't load at all while scrubbing). But, also noticed no matter how smoothe everything is running in 3ds Max as well as PPro, once I start performing a "scrubbing" action with whatever timeline I use, it will definately freeze my whole computer, Windows and all. Hard reboot is neeed.
With having gone through 2 GPU's, done a full memtest via Windows 7 and Memtest86+, there seems to be no issue with my memory or GPU. Like I said, I've run UDK without an issue. Whether the editor or game. The USB doesn't seem like it's the cause, I've used both wireless as well as wired keyboards/mouse. Still freezes, but now only when using a mouse to "Scrub".
Is it possible my motherboard could be incompatible somewhere? I mean, really.. everything is brand new but 2 weeks of troubleshooting.
And I do plan on trying to run my software off the C drive, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else, like I said, I've seen and used a computer where it all runs off the D drive and it runs perfectly, actually better on his computer than off the C drive at my schools. So if it is an issue would it lie within the fact that I'm using an Nvidia GPU? Considering my classmate is using a AMD/ATI Radeon or something like that.

My iMac freezes while using safari. I have Mavericks installed

Several times my iMac freezes while using Safari. Only way to get out is to do a hard shut-down by holding the start button. Any ideas? Version of Maveriks is 10.9.2

When I use filevault, will it work well with time capsule? will my bakcup be encrypted aswell?

At our home we want to use filevault and by timemachine we want to get a backup on our timecapsule. I heard some problems some time ago about encrypted backups. How is that now we have lion? Will our backup be encypted? Is there anywhere an article that I can read with this kind of answers? I just cannot find it.

Firefox crashes or freezes unexpected while watching/using flash contents

Firefox crashes or freezes unexpected while watching/using flash contents. Particularly, when I need any flash content. It freezes up so that the only option will be to force quit the firefox.

I've noticed the crashing increasing with the newer versions. The worst thing is when I'm writing a long email and then go to a page with flash and ff locks up and then crashes. I use IE now for most flash content or mission critical emailing but IE's interface is poorly laid out so I don't like it. I've tried FF with the plugin container and without it and it crashes either way (more often without the container). I use adblock and firebug. I wonder if ppl experiencing this prob are using those plugins too.

Freezes while using salesforce

I was using Firefox on my work laptop until it started freezing while using salesforce.com. It seems to have started around the time v13 came out but i can't say for certain. I've attempted to remedy it by disabling all plugins but that did not help.

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
1. Clear Firefox's Cache
Firefox menu > Preferences > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"
2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here (this will log you out)
Tools menu > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
Then try reloading the page and logging in again. Does that help?

Can I use FileVault 2 to encrypt a single folder?

Just upgraded to Lion. Can I use FileVault 2 to encrypt a single folder on a drive and not the whole drive? Thank you.

Thank you for your reply. By "encrypted disk image" do you mean functionality of the Disk Utility? Could you please recommend settings? I mean if I want to encrypt a folder, should I set it up as a hard disk or a CD? What would be optimal configuration settings? My goal is to encrypt a folder and store it in the Documents folder, for example. I would want to mount it, enter password, use it, and unmount until the next use. Thanks!
