Desktop Freezing..

Hi all,
I am experiencing this issue on both my Mac Pro and Macbook. After the system is up and operating for an hour or two the desktop freezes up and becomes inacecssible. I see icons on the screen and I can draw a selection box, but I can't click on anything. Additionally, any files added or removed from the desktop do not appear. Everything is fine when I look at the desktop directory in a finder window.
Any ideas?

I am having the same problem. I was not able to access my desktop (spinning ball of the undead), but I could launch programs and by keeping my mouse going up through the program to the force quit menu I could access the force quit dialog and relaunch Finder. It always said "Finder not responding". I would relaunch, but it didn't fix the problem. I haave now switched to the native sreen resolution in hopes that it will do the trick. I wil check back with a yes or no.

only the desktop freezes, it refuses to accept clicks on anything then all of the sudden it works fine.
if I opened an application (like tmp.txt ) I get as many as I clicked on during the freeze period.
the task bar works during this freeze period, just the desktop is frozen. I can' bring up the task manager during this time.
this is the only error in the event log. I've tried looking at links for this but NOTHING helps. I don't know what that LiveComm.exe product is but I can't get rid of it and I can't stop it from causing issues.
The program LiveComm.exe version 17.5.9600.20498 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

    Hi,
Regarding current information we can't say that it related to this exe file.
We need to use Clean boot mode and Safe mode to test the results:
Please first restart the Windows in Clean boot and see if the issue still persists after reboot:
How to perform a clean boot
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
If the issue doesn’t appear, you can determine which one can be the cause by using dichotomy in MSconfig. Checking on half of Non-Microsoft service and restart, determining which half of the services cause the issue and repeating to check half of the problematic
    half services.
If the issue still persists in Clean boot mode, please test in Safe mode.
Let me know the results in Safe mode.
If we cannot identify this issue in Clean boot and safe mode, please help to collect the boot trace and let's see what cause this issue:

  • At every startup, Mac mini desktop freezes for 10 mins before I can start any program, what should I do?

At every startup, Mac mini desktop freezes for 10 mins before I can start any program, what should I do? The mouse cursor can move around, but the icons are not responding at all. Can't click on anything during the "freezing" period, and this "freezing" happened with every startup. Waking up from sleep mode is OK. Also the systems crashed frequently with any flash-player required pages in web browser. What's wrong??

  • [Gnome-shell] Desktop freezes when Samba shares become unavailable

    Hi,
I'm experiencing a very annoying problem on the laptop I use at work. I'm using an up-to-date Arch with Gnome-shell and we have a bunch of network shares on several servers.
I access them via Nautilus and everything's fine as long as I don't unplug the cable. If I do that while Samba shares are mounted in Nautilus (through GVFS), the entire desktop freezes and I have to restart GDM to get it back (but all applications are killed and that's not cool).
I also realized that when I mount a Samba share I'm accessing through a personal VPN (so, through the Internet), the entire desktop becomes slow and choppy. If I transfer a file to the remote folder using Samba over this VPN, I cannot do anything until the transfer is finished. During this time the desktop is freezed. But after that I get it back and it's working again (but is still slow as long as I keep the share folder mounted).
When I unmount the "slow" Samba shared folder, everything works perfectly.
Why is Gnome so dependent on such thing as a simple mounted shared folder? Is there a way to prevent this behaviour?
    Thanks in advance

Hi nanawel, i've a very similar problem to your on my home machine: this (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1196319) is the thread i found when researching my problem, so i started investigating it and then discovered the samba shares problem, so i found out your problem when looking up for similar annoyances in Google.
Have you been able to track it down?
As i said in the other thread, i don't have installed any of those gnome-shell extensions, but i have the TweakTool->Desktop option named "Show mounted volumes on the desktop" enabled, as well as an entry in my /etc/fstab file: tomorrow i'm going to have some tries with my brother's pc and see if i can find out something more.. i'll keep posting on this thread then, since it looks like my problem is very very similar.. hopefully we'll be able to track it down this beast.
But also, I'm also experiencing that "slow network share/choppy desktop" on my work machine only: it looked like a FUSE issue, but could never debug that since i've a quite important deadline at work and can't start debugging my OS during working hours
Anatolik was kind enough to chime in and suggest to debug it (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1193437), this is the thread about it.

  • HP Pavilion P7-1225 Desktop Freezes After Startup. Frustrated!

    Hi,
My family's HP Pavilion P7-1225 desktop computer freezes a few moments after startup, most times. However, it will occasionally work just fine for hours and then suddenly lock up. Over the weekend a sort of clicking sound was heard followed immediately by the freeze. Restarted a few times, heard noise, got lock up. We're not hearing the noise now but it's still freezing up.
We have yet to talk to HP Support about it, but no other professional has been able to solve it (and we have had many try). Please help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Leo

    Hi Leo,
Many things could be causing your issue.  Intermittent freezes can be very difficult to solve.  Since so many professionals have already tried to solve your issue then it's probably time to contact HP Support.  As such, I am not going to suggest what has probably already been suggested and/or tested.
I don't know if you are using an UPS but transient changes in line voltage (too low or even too high) will often times cause a failover and clicking noises (relay closing and opening) with some UPSs will be heard.  I hear clicks from my UPS at times even though the lights don't flicker.  A poor or faulty UPS could cause issues like you are experiencing.  You might also having an electrican check the circuits in your house.  You might want to isolate your PC equipment off circuits that might have high current start up devices that might cause local voltage surges.

  • Envy Phoenix desktop Freezes and Event ID 7

I am on an Envy Phoenix 800-060, running Windows 8.1, fully updated. Freezes will occur at any time, and the only way to get past them is to do a hard reboot. Occasionally, I can wait 10-15 minutes and the system will come back to the living slowly, but not often.
After checking the Event Viewer, I noticed there were around 700 drive errors (Event ID 7) in the past 24 hours. The only drive plugged anywhere into the computer was the main harddrive (1 TB) and the recovery HD (20-ish GB, not sure as my desktop is currently catatonic). Is it safe to assume the main HD is dying? I would be okay with just buying a new one and a copy of Windows 8.1. I just want to be sure it would fix the issue.
Extra info: I have done everything from disabling the dynamic tick, to System File Check(SFC), and Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool. None of them affected the death-freeze.
The SFC was unable to fix a file(s)
DISM seemed to fix what SFC failed to fix
EDIT: I posted this when an error check on the main HD (supposedly) had 12 days left to finish. It finished, but with no errors detected.
    This question was solved.

The guide that I reviewed for your computer mentioned SMART.  However, it appears there is a difference.  It appears that the hard drive has failed.  Therefore, I don't believe that the Recovery will work.  You can give it a try, however.
When you replace the hard drive, you should assure that the new drive is the same size or larger than the current drive.  Here is a guide that you can use after replacing the drive.  It is for Win 7, but it should be close to the same as Win 8.  It will give you the main idea of how to proceed.
Please click the "Thumbs Up+ button" if I have helped you and click "Accept as Solution" if your problem is solved.

  • Desktop freeze since Nouveau (and "nouveau E[PDISP] " errors in dmesg)

I've switched to Nouveau recently (for reasons I won't get into here). Since then, my frame rate has been disappointing, which I mention in another thread (GPU info and glxinfo there). More importantly, however, after a few hours of use, my desktop will freeze up. Here is some info inspired by the HangDiagnosis page:
My display is frozen in X, but mouse cursor can still move. Sound is still playing in the background if a media player / YouTube was still running. Sometimes, I can still go to another terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F2, sometimes not. One time when I could, I restarted X and it would just work again.
I would very much appreciate some help diagnosing and (dare I say it) solving this problem!
Edit 1: There are some errors in dmesg after booting that seem very revealing (though I myself can make head nor tail of them):

    russ0r wrote:Are you using GNOME?
    Yes, in fact.
What's your memory usage look like?
Not sure. I didn't check. But I'll be keeping a resource usage diagram visible on screen for when it happens again.
I have the same problem, but it's caused by GNOME gobbling up too much memory. Even with 8Gb I run out after a few hours. I haven't found a fix yet, considering switching to MATE or KDE as a result.
I do doubt that's the problem for me. I have 32GB of RAM and another 32GB swap-space. And while writing this reply, memory usage hasn't gone up one bit.
Also, I now found some revealing messages in dmesg, which I put in my original post.

  • CAD desktop Freezing

Had a user that had a call showing up in Agent Desktop but did not disconnect after she hung up.  She tried high
ligting the call and hitting the drop button but that did not work and ended up closing out of Agent Desktop so she could take calls. Then I had another user same issue and had to close out of Agent Desktop, only when she logged in this morning she still isnt' getting any calls.  Both cases they were in a "Ready" state.  How can I disconnect the calls when CAD freezes and verify that the agents are recieving calls again, or back in the"Ready" state? Are there any known bugs for CAD freezing? we are using  version 6.6.1

Yes there is.  Well, technically, the bug is not about CAD freezing, but CAD freezing is a symptom of this bug.
The problem is with CUCM not sending the JTAPI call disconnect event to UCCX, which hoses things up.  You probably have a bunch of stale cotnacts in real time reporting.
Search the forums, it was a huge problem recently with lots of discussion surrounding it.
    Is this for UCCX?

  • Desktop freeze on user load- only spotlight icon appears

I've got a problem with my main user load up. When I log in, my desktop picture (background) appears and then the spotlight icon top right but NOTHING else. The finder freezes and I can't access anything- all I can do is force a power-down and login as another user.
This is the third time this has happened on 3 different macs, the other two times I had to delete the user and create a new one (then load in all user data from a back up)- but obviously I have to then load in all application settings and I lost the user pref data.
Has anyone else experienced this fault which is now becoming 'frequent' or more importantly can anyone advise how to fix it, without losing any user data?
    Many thanks
    Jon

Hi Jon, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try starting in "Safe Mode". If all works well there, then delete these 2 files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
Also disable any Login items in System Preferrences >> Accounts >> Login Items.
Then restart normally and let us know.

  • IMac desktop freeze

I have an older iMac (first version with the Intel processor) that is having desktop problems. It appears that if there is too much movement on the screen i.e. a video, several windows being moved, etc. the screen will first not draw images completely, colorful lines will appear across the desktop and then the desktop will freeze. Freezing means that whatever is on the screen at that time will stop/freeze/not move except for the beachball icon of the mouse—I can still move that around.
I have done hardware tests and the machine passes—usually. It reported once the video memory or card failed but every other time it has been fine. If I remember correctly the desktop froze that time. I have run Disk Utility several times. That seems to freeze the desktop too.
What is interesting is that the machine seems to be working behind the screen freeze. If I am transferring files from that machine to another or the other way around it continues to do so. I can also access the machine's files from other machines on the network, just as if it were running properly. But, I cannot do a screen share.
Right now it has about 30 GB of space left (out of 250). It has 2GB memory. It has one account on it. It is running the most up-to-date OS release. I no longer have the OS install disks from when it was new so I don't think I can install my upgrade copy of OS 10.6. My thinking was to do a clean install and see if it still has issues (possibly limited memory). That being what it is, does anyone have suggestions/ideas for me to get this machine running again? I was planning on passing it on to a family that needs it more than I but I don't want to pass on a problem machine.

Before you even think of upgrading to 10.6, you need to free up disk space. 30 GB is cutting it close. You also need the install discs so you can repair the startup disk if necessary.

  • My HP Pavilion Desktop freezes at the HP Invent Logo screen and does not load up BIOS

    Hi,
This is the first time this has ever happened to me.  What I mean is that I could not open the set up (F10) to change my boot order in the BIOS screen.  When I turn on my desktop it stays on the blue HP Invent logo screen and when I try pressing esc, F9, F10, or F11, it says entering that specific mode but hangs there and nothing happens.  I have searched the internet and forums and could not find a positive solution to try to at least having my computer to get into BIOS or even load into windows.
    I have a HP Pavilion a6642p Desktop.
    Windows 7
Bought it in 2010 and was working fine when I last used it.
I have tried cleaning my computer, Unplugging my cords and replugging after a set amount of time, removing my battery for 30 seconds, draining my power, unplugging my hard drive and turning it on like that lets me run from CD because there isn't a hard drive, but I can't do anything else even if I put in a Windows 7 CD to try and reset my computer, but I can't because there isn't a partition to be located.  I have no idea what to do and have been trying for the past 5 days non-stop. :[
If there's any other information you need please let me know.
I can also show some photos if what I mean when it freezes on Logo screen and BIOS doesn't load.

It sounds like the hard drive has failed. A bad hdd can prevent a boot up or ability to enter BIOS.Since you are able to boot from a cd with hdd unplugged that seems to implicate the hdd even more. And the fact that Windows 7 dvd doesn't see a partition to install on. Replace the hdd with a new one of comparable size, boot with your Recovery Disks to reinstall back to factory.

  • Palm Desktop Freezes Computer on Installation

Hi. I'm trying to install the latest Palm Desktop on my Windows XP system (I am an administrator) and the install program freezes every time I attempt the installation. It reaches either the Registering Product or Modifying Registry stage of the installation before freezing my computer. I can only fix this by powercycling. Occasionally, when I have restarted the computer, the program appears to have been installed, but when I try to run it, it crashes at the splash screen. Other times, the program appears to have not been installed. I'm at my wit's end here. What can I do?

I did have a previous version of Palm Desktop installed. It wasn't working with my USB kit, so I decided to try the latest version. Could this have created a problem?
Also, how do I find out if I'm using XP 64-bit and how do I change this?

  • Palm Desktop Freezes on Media

Just got my PalmCentro a few days ago and i like it well enough.
I got it to sync up a few times and i downloaded some apps or whatever you want to call them and some photos. But i went to add some content today and my Palm Desktop keeps freezing up when i go to media.. It did this 3 times.
    help, anyone?

what version are using for the palm desktop? it seems that you might have some corrupted media files. to challenge that, you need to try emptying the media contents by simply removing the photos folder inside the username folder. here's how:
    1. close the palm desktop
    2. go to c:\program files\palm\username folder (for v4.2)
        go to C:\Documents and Settings\your user login\My Documents\Palm OS Desktop\username folder (v6.2)
    3. right click on photos and choose cut then paste it in your PC's desktop for easy access
    4. open palm desktop and access media (check if it will still hang up or it can now be opened)
    5. if you can now open it, then that means you may have stored a corrupted media file
to recover back the media files and avoid the corrupted media file again, you need to add again the files one by one. it's a tedious process but it will guarantee a good result.
    1. since your media in the palmdesktop is now empty, click add media
    2. locate the photos folder in the PC's desktop and open it then locate the folder backupforinternal or any other folder that may contain your photos. in some cases, the albums are represented or named after the category.
    3. select a photo and then click ok
    4. it should be back inside your palmdesktop

  • BB Desktop freezes with 9630 in bluetooth mode

I am running BB Desktop 5.0 and Vista, with a 9630.  I was able to sync with outlook using the BB Desktop and bluetooth to my phone at first, but now it has stopped working.  The BB Desktop application freezes up when initially communicating with the device when the application launches.  The 9630 goes into desktop communication mode, as you see the icon of the PC and the BB on its screen, but there is no activity going on (no arrows shooting back and forth).  The Desktop app goes into grey screen mode, like it is frozen.  It just sits there forever.
Anyone else seen this?  I have tried reinstalling, re-pairing the device, everything.
    Thanks.

I am going to update this thread, the same thing happens in USB mode!
So its not a bluetooth issue really.  I think it has to do with the BB device communication stack.  The Desktop app is waiting for a response so they both just sit there.
While connected with USB, I can use windows explorer to view the contents of the media card on the BB.
wah!  being able to sync contacts and calendars is pretty important.  This is a deal breaker if the Desktop app can't communicate with the device.
