Desktop going black randomly
hey guys!
I've just installed Arch for the first time on my system so i'm a noob and i have an issue for wich i hope i can get some help on this forum.
here it is;
while installing arch for dual boot with windows xp my desktop would go black randomly,i think like 5 sec apart, but it installed succesfully.after that i rebooted my pc same issue after i enter linux my screen goes black the same way.i haven't installed any packages so far except those from the installation cd
i hope i made myself clear.
if someone knows anything or have some clue it would be highly apreciated.thanks a lot!
p.s i installed it on qemu before and worked ok so....
Hi and Welcome!
Your screen went black while installing from the Live CD or while booting from it? You can boot now? If the issue happens while booting, can be that your dont have the appropriate drivers for booting in the KMS mode, which I think is the default today on arch.
First, post your video card info here. Is a nvidia, ati? Or a intel...?
Can you boot Windows and verify if that randomly blackness happen too?
You can try our wiki and other threads on this forum. That issue can happen to a lot of users and some old threads have lots of info.

Hi everyone.
I have a very strange issue on 2 different PCs.
From time to time the screen goes completly black, and I have to wait about 2-3 seconds for it to restore the picture.
Both have NVIDIA video card, one PC has GF8900GT the second GF7200.
Both PCs running GNOME
In both PCs the screen is connected via DVI port.
One PC has Arch installed for about 4 months the second has a 3 days old installation.
I also have a laptop with Arch (about 4 months) but I didn't expirience any issues there.
I'm not sure what the problem is, but it really annoys me.
I'll be very gratefull if someone points me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance.Hello dhruid,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the screen goes black randomly. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

Mac OS X 10.6.8 statup problem: desktop goes black 10 secs after booting, can remain apparently asleep for 15 mins. I can't prompt it to wake, until recently it would wake when peripheral were added (earphones). What is wrong, and how can this be fixed?
You need to fresh install 10.6, programs fresh form original sources and return only vetted files (no TM migrations) from a regular storage drive
But this when erasing the drive use the Security Option: Zero All Data before installing 10.6
What has happened your data got corrupted and it's corrupted on the TM drive too.
So the Zero will map off bad sectors on your drive, the 10.6 install will be fresh, the programs will be fresh and only files will be returned, you'll find out in short order which ones they are.
Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Once you are back up, then consider making a option key bootable clone.

Macbook Pro late 2008 goes black randomly
I purchased a macbook pro late 2008 model on December 30, 2008. Since recently, its screen goes black randomly when the built-in 9400m graphics chip is switched on. During the black screen process, the keyboard still keeps shining. I might wake it up by pressing CtrlShiftEject, but quite often I have to shut it down by holding the power button and restart. I have never encountered the problem when it is working with the 9600M chip, or when it is running window xp.
The screen can go black at any time, when it is booting (the gray screen with the Apple logo), or in the Apple hardware test. I have run Apple Hardware Test for several times, and no errors were found.
Desperately, I brought my laptop to the local apple store, and there I was unable to reproduce the black of death, and I left my computer there for check, after 3 days, they just called me, saying there was nothing wrong with it. But when I take it home, turn it on, only to find that the problem still remains the same.
Could it be the problem with a defected graphic chip? Or is it a problem with the firmware or the OS?
I really appreciate your assistance.
PS I tried to reset the SMC as it is instructed in Apple Support, but I did not see the led blinking at all, so I did not know whether it worked or not.i am having the same problem!!! My description is pretty much exactly the same as the orgional posters. now mine have been less frequent, but i recently just expierenced two in a row in about a 3 minute time span. now, mine have never done it at boot up. i dont believe i had this problem with 10.5, and i definitly dont have this problem in windows. now, i have in MOST cases, been able to recover from it by, simply closing the screen for a moment, then reopening it. but i really would like this issue to be resolved. Thanks!

I purchased the notebook barely 16 days ago, and after a few days I noticed that the display goes black for a second or two randomly i.e it doesn't happen while holding the notebook in any certain way or something. The dislay goes black anywhere while playing games, music, videos or simply anytime. Also now there's some flickering in the lower part of the display. It happens with no approx time gap. I asked HP's Chat Support to help me out of this, they tried to uninstall and have a clean install of display drivers, that didnt work. Then they said they'll assign the nearest Physical service centre for an onsite visit and that some one will contact me, but waiting since almost 4-5 days this didnt happen. For the past two days I regularly ask HP's Support team about the promised visit but they keep on saying that today you'll recieve a call positively. The problem has escalated to such an extent that it interferes with my studies, work and daily use. This all has cost me alot of time and money and it's all due to your faulty product and carelessness. I would like you to help me in this regard, asap, if it is at all possible for you !! Edit : Before you ask, everything's updated to it's latest version. and I don't have an external Monitor.

Macbook 2009 screen going black randomly
My macbook 5,2 circa about autumn 2009 (white plastic) keeps randomly going to black screen whether or not the power cable is plugged in. I've reset the SMC but no improvement. It sounds like the fan is running all the time too - and when the screen goes black, it sounds like the whole thing has shut down. After a short while it appears to wake up again.
This could be a sign of a failing drive. Considering the age of the machine, it's not unexpected. I recommend that you backup your data as a clone to an external drive in case of failure.
Both of these applications can be used to create a clone.

I have a 30in cinema display attached to my iMac and the iMac screen randomly goes black while the cinema stays active. I can put it to sleep and log back in which fixes it, but often it happens again immediately after. Sometimes it happens so quickly I can't even finishing logging in! I'd like to know if this is a Mavericks issue and I will roll my machine back. Thank you!

Wanted to update you on my situation with this.
So far 8 hours have gone by and I have not had a screen blackout.
FIRST I did the Hardware Test. TWICE on the extended test, the instructions on the KB Article explain. It took almost 3 hours, but while the test was running, both times, my computer screen did not go black.
I did get an error message, both times. Different each time. I looked up both of the error messages on discussion boards. Lots of conflicting info
One good thread said my first error was that my hard drive was bad and would probably fail.
The next error message I researched said that a fan was bad or needed replacement.
(information comes from other folks on discussion boards, not from Apple or technician)
Not sure what exactly those 2 error messages indicate but I followed a thread where someone found a solution by doing the following. So far it's worked.
After Hardware Test I did a shutdown and an SMC resest. Unplugged computer power source from wall and computer for about 10 minutes.
Finally after a restart I downloaded "SMC Fan Control" (CNET Downloads has a nice safe copy you can download)
There is a temperature monitor and from what I've read so far, keeping the CPU temperature under 50˚C is ideal. Making sure your fans and computer is in a well ventilated area/room too of course.
The SMC Fan Control helps you set your own speeds on the fans and so far everything has been going normal. -
MBP Bad Display? Goes black randomly.
I am having an issue with my Macbook Pro display which I have seen many variants of surfing the intertubes here. The screen goes black more or less at random. I am hoping to avoid having it serviced as my black tie service plan expired last november (bought this at Best Buy.) When the screen is black the computer is still running.
This has been happening intermittently for a while now, and in the past week has rendered my MBP effectively unusable.
Before making any suggestions, please read this list of commonly suggested ideas I've tried which did not solve the issue:
The power saver/display sleep is set to 1 hour, it is not coming on.
The screen saver is set to “never”.
I ran a software update a couple days ago.
Shutting the lid and waking the machine back up doesn’t matter.
F2 (increase screen brightness) doesn’t matter.
Dimming the screen (holding F1 for about 10 seconds) before increasing screen brightness also has no effect.
My external display WORKS, I can shut my lid and use my computer normally with external display, keyboard, and mouse. I believe this rules out the display board issue: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Holding a LED flashlight up to the screen does not seem to matter. I’ll try again in a darker setting (it’s very bright right now) to rule it out definitively but I don’t think the backlight is affected (you can see a slight glow in the dark.)
I already reset the PRAM.
I already reset the SMC.
I already reset the PMU.
I already attempted the MBP pro video update http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088 which said it is not supported on my system (I was pretty sure it wasn't applicable but worth a shot.)
I don't *THINK* it's the inverter cable as wiggling the display lid does not APPEAR to affect it, which leads me to believe the cable is still flexing without a problem.
Doesn't seem like the display is bad as it comes sometimes on and the backlight still works, but I don't know. Since the MBP is no longer under warranty, I am not necessarily opposed to getting under the hood and replacing something as long as I know what to replace. The inverter cable looks easy (ish) but I don't know if that's the answer.
Have I effectively ruled out everything other than the display? Any insight?Hello, I dont know if might be of help to you. The 17" early MBP had a problem with the onboard Graphics Processor overheating. A fix for this is to have the GPU remounted ( I think the tech term is "reballed") there are a number of companies who can do this for you, you will need to search for a local one to you. I dont know if this was a problem with the 15" version.
Hope this helps

I am finding on one project, that the viewer suddenly goes black. If I reopen sometimes it is OK. If the playhead moves past the last video clip, it goes black, obviously, but if that happens it stays black when I go back the beginning.
I have trashed final cut preferences.
Can anyone help please, this is rather a showstopper?I cant help but I can confirm that this happened to me... I had a project that I noticed had a small empty clip at the end, which I had not inserted, so I deleted it and the viewer just showed black whatever I did so I went thru undo and returned the clip and all was well. I tried this out several times with same result...cant understand it.

Windows 7 Desktop goes Black after a period of inactivity and the user accesses their machine again
Hi There,
Wonder if someone can offer some help to an unusual problem?
Users have Windows 7 machines which all have a desktop background theme...Blue with a company Logo.
User will go for lunch and leave their position, after a period of time screen saver and/or powersaver kicks in...all normal at this point.
After an hour they come back to their machine and they move the mouse/tap a key and bring the machine back to life (excuse my terminology :) ) and the desktop has gone from the default theme to a black desktop...Icons/Applications will behave fine.
The temporary workaround is:
1. Log off and on windows to restore the desktop back to normal.
or...
2. I do a restart of the service "Desktop window Manager Session Manager" which puts the desktop back to normal as well.
Has anyone seen this and worked a way how to do a permanent fix....have struggled on Google as all answers i find are around screen savers which IS NOT the problem.
Cheers,
SteveHi Brenton,
First of all thanks for your quick response.
I forgot to mention these are machines we maintain on a customer site and I am planning a visit there soon so will be looking at some of the options you mention and then post a fuller report back for you.
In the meantime...
Re 1 we may actually be able to consider not going to "sleep" as this is a 24/7 operation environment so would not be a big deal to do that so may try that on my site visit.
Re 2 we do have a master build IF we need to re-build/re-image...its a fairly locked down completed environment so new machines/rebuilds wont happen often. Just for info we re-did our build from scratch very carefully.
On site going to check the Firmware updates as you quite rightfully mention could be out-of-date and benefit from an update. We last updated them about October/November last Lear.
I have just remembered that sometimes the users resolve the issue by using the mouse and dragging an empty box around the screen and this restores the desktop colour etc...very strange one!!
Cheers,
Steve -
Problem: iBook G4 display goes black randomly. help?
Hi,
I have an iBook G4 that purchased in 2004.
Recently, seemingly randomly, the screen will go black from time to time.
The keyboard is still active, and I can hear any music that I had been listening to still playing, etc. So, the computer is still operating, but the display is black.
If I close it, the the little sleep "eye" that usually pulses when it is sleeping does not light up at all.
I have to open it, shut the computer down by holding down the power button, and then turn it on again. The display comes on like it should.
I have found no pattern for when the screen will go black.
I saw on a google search that many people have had this problem.
My questions:
1) Has Apple acknowledged this as a defect and offered to fix it?
2) Anyone know what might be happening?
2) I'm likely getting a new Apple laptop soon, and if I my screen completely goes, will I still be able to hook up my old computer to my new one and transfer my files, music, etc to my new computer?
Thanks!!!! peace.

if I were to get a McBook ... then I shoudl be fine transferring data from my old machine to my new?
Yes the lack of FireWire in the new MacBooks won't allow a Target mode transfer but the two computers can still be networked together as noted on the site I posted.
The different operating systems (my old OS 10.3.9 to the new Snow Leopard) won
't be a problem for transferring data? Is that right?
The difference in OSs won't be a problem for the transfer but there could be compatibility issues for documents in Word for instance or Excel. Those exist anyway a fact I've found particularly irritating.
When or where you buy the MacBook you can ask them about such matters and make that a condition of you buying the new MacBook. I'm sure they'll be glad to implement the transfer. All my clients have had that done here in Chicago.
If you find you don't need that iBook after you purchase your new MacBook you can email me to have it donated. I have many parts here for repairs as evidenced in this video:

Here's the URL to the TV station site:

Good luck and let us know how you like your new MacBook and how it goes.

I totally just typed way to much info in the title.
In any event, my G5 Dual Core's(late 2005) screen will randomly go black with out notice. Its happend while designing in illistrator and also while browsing google(primarly the use of my comp is graphic design). The fans stay on and it sounds to still be fully running however the screen will not wake up and if i tap the power button it doesnt wake up either. I reset the "PRAM" while booting up, i toggled my screen saver/power saver also so its "never".
I thought the HD was faulty cause it sounds like a light saber at times... I figured the OS was crashing(im ingorant) so I bought a new one and more ram as well. I've installed the HD and am waiting for 10.3 OS to get here in hopes that the new HD and OS will not crash(again that was my educated guess as to what the issue was).
Is it a video card issue? faulty cable you think(VGA to DVI 17" Samsung)?
Thanks so much in advance for any and all feed back along with the patience of a newbie to the forum/community world.

A few months ago my superdrive broke. Someone who new what they were doing installed a new superdrive. Everything was then working fine. The next day i turned on the computer and the screen would randomly go black or flicker. It would go black for a few minutes or second.
That person came back and cleaned out all of dust and made sure all of the wires were on correctly.
Everything worked for about a month. And now it is happening again. any thoughts on how to fix this?
I have tried a few random things i found online. None have worked.
1. Refresh pram
2. on plug computer from wall for 10 minutes
3. lower the brightness of the screen.
This is my one computer and i need to figure out how to get it to work again. Any ideas or thoughts would be great.
it is a 2007 imac.Have had in shop and replaced video card and logic board
You should not be troubleshooting a Mac that just came from a repair shop. Return the comp to the shop but this time......
When it’s time to pick up your computer from the repair shop:
*** Before you leave the repair shop, make sure you have the repair tech(s) power the comp up and demonstrate that it is indeed working & repaired properly to your satisfaction.***
Apple has a 90 day warranty on all repairs. -
Screen goes black constantly, okay with Windows
My mid-2010 21.5" iMac has been having issues for a while now. The screen goes black randomly. This happens anywhere from once a week to once every two seconds for days on end. I've done plenty of research and seen similar problems but no real solutions.
Symptoms:
Screen goes to sleep. Shine a flashlight on it, can still see stuff, so it's just the backlight out.
It'll either happen at startup, before the Apple logo, or after using for a while.
Using a hot corner or keyboard shortcut will temporarily wake it up.
If watching video, sound still plays even though screen is black.
Had it in a 60 degree room with A/C blasting on it, no change.
Tried resetting PRAM, SMU.
Hardware test was fine, but I can't do this when it's not actually working.
External monitor works fine.
Really weird- this does not happen with Windows XP. It runs fine. So maybe a software problem? BUT, the problem occurs when booting from Install DVD. So maybe not a software problem. I was going to wipe and re-install but can't even do that due to it blacking out.
I've had it in and they replaced the LCD, didn't help.
I wish it would just permanently stop working so it'd be easier to figure out, as it is, the intermittent nature is driving me nuts. Can anyone please help?I meant SMC, not "SMU". Oops.
billkline, thanks for the input, the fact that Windows works has really got me scratching my head. That's when I went to reinstall OS X but couldn't when it blacked out on the Snow Leopard Install DVD. Thoroughly confused now.
Also, starting tonight it now hangs on the gray startup screen for thirty seconds before booting up. This usually is a one or two seconds before getting the Apple logo. -
Hello mac community, I am new,
I updated a program today everything was working fine yesterday and now today I was updating PLAY a music engine program it seems to have caused the mac to go crazy. I also updated VE PRO 5 another music program. Everything has gone crazy. It turns on but then then the screen goes black after a while 5-10mins. I managed to get the crash report.
Why is the graphics card all of a sudden effected by program updates.

Yesterday upon startup for the first time the screen went black. Had to do a force shutdown. Unplugged all external devices. Reset everything as well. Slowly checked everything was on the phone with Apple even during the process. Seemed to correct the issue. Then of course I get off the phone, restarted my computer and it goes black randomly again.
Rebooted fine. Checked all my hard disks internal and external, verified and repaired permissions on main drive and clone. Since then nothing yet...But I still feel its either the Video Card or the Monitor as everything else is fully operational.
I plan on taking it in to look at as my applecare is up in November but I cant point my finger on it. And really am trying to avoid lugging the mac pro and monitor in at the same time...(Not the easiest thing with lack of parking in nyc..)
If the display was dying I feel like it would have konked out already.
The funny thing is I have had to replace video cards and monitors in the past but this time I cant quite figure out what the **** is going on.
I am leaning towards the video card as I noticed it flickered a little when opening plug in windows in pro tools or multiple windows in sfari but it doesnt make sense.
Worst part is I cant do a hardware test cause for some reason this computer doesnt have the software installed. It does nothing when I hold down the D button...
I totally baffled but the randomness of this.
