  • My brand new Mac Pro running Mountain Lion crashes when installing updates or new software.

My brand new Mac Pro running Mountain Lion crashes and re-boots when installing updates or new software. I can only perform these operations while in the safe boot mode.  I have reloaded OSX twice. Does not solve the problem.  The machine is brand new. It replaced a previous MacPro that would not support the new Mountain Lion.  When my new machine came in.  I swaped the dirve out of my old unit into the new and ran the new Lion update.  The machine has had this aforementioned problem since that time.  Also, I had the Legacy version of File Vault running on the old machine/drive, which I also turned off(thinking that was the problem)  but that did not fix the problem either.

I have an imac bought late 2013, can i use it as a display for the new mac pro running windows 8 through bootcamp?

No. Target Display mode is only supported when connected to a Mac running 10.6 or later.
It cannot be used with a PC, bootcamp, gamaing console, cable box, DVR or PowerPC Mac.

I have a Mac Pro Running OSX Leopard that the OS has gotten corrupted. Can I boot and install OSX Snow Leopard instead of reinstalling OSX Leopard?

    Buy a new drive.
Leave your corrupt Leo system as is.
Maybe you own Disk Warrior? maybe not.
If you don't own Carbon Copy Cloner, invest in it. It can verify and do checksum on all files. So too can Lloyd's File Integrity app.
But you are overdue probably for a new system drive. My vote today is pick up a 120GB Samsung 840 SSD for $90 is fine, will feel like a new computer and is room enough for system and apps. All your data needs to go to drive #2.
With a clone you should never have to reinstall. But you would have bootable backups from points in time, like right after installing, right before making changes.
If you are running Leo then it has to be Early 2008 or before, a 3,1 or maybe 1,1 or 2,1 model.
Leo is not receiving security updates. Snow is, but Lion is even more secure and runs on all Mac Pro models. It does drop support for all the older PowerPC programs and drivers.
You should insure that you are prepared for any updates needed even for 10.6.8.

I am getting Error 150:30 when I launch CS4 on a new Mac Mini running OSX 10.9.3.
The application was restored from a backup using Apple Time Machine.
I would reinstall the applications, since I have the original disks, but alas, the Mac Mini has no external drive.
    Any ideas?

CS4 is untested and unsupported under 10.9.x
That said, you should uninstall everything run the cleaner tool and then download the CS4 installer and try it again.
If that doesn’t do it, you’re on your own.

  • Rear Audio Jack not Working on New Mac Pro

    Hello All,
Here's the deal. I just pursuaded my company to buy a brand new Mac Pro to run FCP Studio 2 as a test run to see if they perform well enough to eventually replace our remaining PC's. We've had the Mac Pro for less then two weeks and I'm running into an issue that I can't resolve, and I don't want to fall on my face. The rear Audio input jack keeps failing. Meaning sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't when speakers are plugged into. The jack on the front works fine, but the rear jack doesn't appear to recognize the speakers after the computer is shut down then restarted. You have to restart the computer 2 or 3 times before the speakers start pumping out sound. Which in all honesty is extermely dissappointing to me. And if I have to bring this thing in to get serviced, my boss will not move forward with buying anymore Mac Pro's, which I'm working hard to make happen.
    Please help me out.
Thank you all for your time

  • Vista Ultimate SP1 (retail dvd) will not install on new Mac Pro

I wish to dedicate a new 1TB hard drive in Bay3 on a brand new Mac Pro for Vista Ultimate SP1, preferably 64-bit. I have tried several times to install a retail dvd version of Vista Ultimate with SP1 (both 32- and 64-bit) without success on two different hard drives (first the one in bay 3; then, after lack of success, the one in bay 4). The installation process does not proceed beyond the stage where Vista must format the hard drive. Vista always displays the message that Vista cannot be installed on a disk of the "GPT style." After giving up on the installation, the disk appears to Disk Utility as a "GUID" disk.
I am seeking advice from anyone who might be able to help me proceed. The remainder of this message provides more detail about what I have tried.
Before starting Boot Camp, I formatted the hard drives initially as MS-DOS FAT, and on later attempts, as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Neither matters. After several attempts, I verified the functionality of the drives by partitioning them using Disk Utility and then repartitioning to one partition. Both 1TB drives appear healthy and can be partitioned and re-partitioned.
When Bootcamp Assistant (BC) calls for the Vista disk, the Vista installation proceeds until the stage when Vista calls for me to identify a hard drive partition for installation. After selecting the largest partition on drive 2 (in bay 3; size 931GB) , the BC Installation and Setup Guide instructs me to "format" the partition. When I do so, the following Windows error message appears:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."
Based on some forum comments, I also tried a different procedure at this stage of the Vista installation. Instead of choosing "format," I first chose to "delete" the selected partition. The disk then appears as "unallocated space." I then chose "new" and "apply" in the hope that it would create a correct NTFS partition for Vista. It then appears as Partition 2 of either Disk 2 (or Disk 3, which I tried subsequently). However, the subsequent "format" still yields the same error.
I tried both procedures with Vista 64-bit and with Vista 32-bit. No difference.
    Suggestions most welcome.

When I provided a link to threads about "Install Vista SP1 DVD" I knew and had in mind a couple threads where people have tried. And trying will help understand.
You don't need to format as NTFS on another PC when just installing MacFuse plus 3G driver extensions will let you do so on your Mac Pro. And that is just one option. There are always multiple ways to get to the same place.
Due to EFI changes there is a tool and tips on how to convert your DVD, but I didn't have time to go back and find and pull those together.
Installing SP1 DVD attempt without success:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1501656
    http://www.ezbsystems.com/ultraiso/
    MS OSCDIMG.exe
Yes, it’s a fairly long process and requires you to download stuff (and be running Windows in the first place) But, it does work as long as you follow the instructions correctly.
Convert DVD to ISO and prepare for EFI booting on Mac
tried rebooting about 10 times. No luck. Finally I pointed Parallels (free trial available) to my blank bootcamp partition and set parallels to boot from CD before HD. Parallels booted the Vista install CD just fine, and put Vista on my HD. Crashed at the end though and said it couldn't make the boot camp partition bootable so all changes were removed. Rebooted under boot camp and the installer came up fine off the CD.
So if you have this problem, and nobody else can help, and if you can find it, maybe you can download..... Parallels. Feel free to post this on the other threads. Unlike other workarounds I'm guessing this will work for everyone and it only takes a free trial download of parallels to give it a try. Still wish apple would acknowledge the problem and post a fix. Can't be that hard.
I think VMWare Fusion also supports vitualization with the bootcamp partition as the target so that may help you get around this install bug in boot camp(or the mac's firmware) too.
I would have thought that with Intel and Microsoft both saying they would begin to support UEFI with Vista SP1 64-bit, and Apple is part of the EFI Group, that "we're different" was a thing of the past. Instead it is harder.

  • USB Card Reader not recognized on new Mac Pro (late 2013)

My Sony USB multi-card reader (model: MRW62E), which I use for SD cards mostly, works on my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), my new iMac, and my old Mac Pro (2009), via the USB ports, but is unrecognized entirely on my new Mac Pro (late 2013). All machines are running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2. Neither the card reader, nor the cards appear at all in FCP, image capture, apple system profiler, the desktop, or disk utility. I cannot find any drivers online addressing the issue, including Sony's website.
Perhaps an additional update for increased compatibility vis-a-vis the new Mac Pro would do the trick...

Does the reader show up under USB in System Report?
If the reader is working properly both the reader and an inserted card will show up.

  • Third monitor not recognized on new Mac Pro

    Hi all!
So, I got my new Mac Pro a couple of days ago.
Spending two days migrating from the old Mac Pro.
Today I was going to setup my three monitors but only two of them is recognized!?
I have one HP ZDisplay  hooked up via HDMI for output when editing.
I also have two Samsung monitors as standard monitors, those two are connected via DVI-Displayport into TB.
The problem is that I can only have one or the other of the Samsung monitors working at the same time.
This only occurs when I have the HP monitor connected via HDMI, as soon as I unplug that one, both of the Samsung monitors work.
    Any ideas?

    You are running into:
Can I connect a DVI display?
Mac Pro supports DVI displays using Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters. Use a single-link DVI adapter such as the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter for DVI displays with a resolution up to 1920x1200. Use a Dual-Link DVI adapter such as the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter for resolutions up to 2560x1600.
Mac Pro supports a total of two single-link DVI displays. If you connect a third DVI display using a passive adapter or a display via HDMI, it will cause one of the three displays to become inactive.
Can I connect more than 2 DVI or HDMI displays?
Mac Pro supports a total of two DVI or HDMI displays when connected via the built-in HDMI port or using the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. To connect additional DVI displays, use an active DVI adapter such as the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter. You can connect up to six active adapter DVI displays. This requires a powered USB hub since Mac Pro offers four USB ports and you will need six to connect them all.
    From:
Mac Pro (Late 2013): Using multiple displays - Apple Support
If the Samsung monitos have a displayport/mini display port input use that. Otherwise you need to purchase an ACTIVE mini displayport to DVI adopter like this one

  • New Mac Pro running Snow Leopard?

I literally picked up a new Mac Pro today at the local Apple Store and it is running Snow Leopard (10.6.4). Is this usual? I don't get the latest operating system on this puppy?

    Be grateful.
You don't want Lion, not today, not quite yet.
Apple still sells 10.6.3 DVD as well as a combo Snow Leopard and Lion on USB thumb drive $69.
In the past priro two OS, there was 10.X.6 DVD but not this time.
So Apple has their giant 1GB combo updates plus another 500MB of supplemental updates for other programs and patches.
Your OEM DVD has Apple Hardware Test.
Mac Pro can still run 10.6.8 just fine.
Macs that only use Lion use network installs, .network hardware test.
Lion recovery partition though can check the health of all hidden hard drive partitions as well as repair so that is nice and for $30 you might want to TEST Lion on another hard drive at some point. Better that then splurging on 3rd party system tools.
The 2010 can take a faster processor. The limitation? still SATA2 means bandwidth and performance hit for storage hits glass ceiling. That SATA 6G SSD for instance.
    Blessing in disguise to me.

  • Can a new Mac Pro run FCP 5.1.4?

I've been checking around to see if I will need to upgrade my FCP 5.1.4 when my new Mac Pro arrives. From what I've read it should run O.K. but I wanted to hear from anyone out there currently doing that to see if there are any issues.
    Thanks.
    Jamie

FCP 5.1.4 is dubbed the Universal Crossgrade...meaning it works on PwerPC macs and Intel macs.
    It will work fine.
