Desktop GUI

Hello,
Looking for a strong light weight Desktop GUI that will work with Solaris 10, and be a good candidate for VPN Technology. The Java based one that is coming with Solaris 10 has a high overhead and bogs down. Sun's CDE is not going to be supported in future releases (to my knowledge). Any recommendations would be appreciated. Possibly one that is built with VPN in mind.
Thanks

What about plain old x? If future versions of Solaris are to discontinue support for CDE the standard desktop environment ( GNOME ) will still run on top of X11.

  • How to start graphical desktop GUI from solaris console login?

    I installed successfully Solaris 11 Express.
    However after Restart only the solaris console login prompt appears.
    How can I manually start the graphical desktop GUI from console login?
    How can I start always automatically the graphical desktop GUI from console login?
    Peter

    When you install Solaris 11 Express from the LiveCD on a system which supports the graphical login screen, it usually comes up automatically. So first, we need to know why this didin't happen. First, did you use Automated Install? If so, you may not have all of the software you need. If that is the case, you may need to do a "pkg install slim_install" as root to get the software you need. If you have all of the software you need, check "svcs -xv" to make sure that there were no problems in the system start up. If problems are listed, you should resolve those issues and see if that allows the graphic install to come up. If "svcs -xv" is clean, you should check the "gdm" service. If it is disabled, you need to enable it. I'm sure there are other potential problems but this should get you started.

  • Windows 7 x64 Pro, desktop GUI fails to display correctly, or crashes, when High RAM load, and even after. HW changed, same issue. Please Help.

    Hi Guys,
    I have have this horror issue with my PC. I have even changed the hardware configuration and the problem still persists. My PC fails to display the desktop correctly after using highly RAM intensive applications, especially Chrome, but even after getting
    the chance to close it, or waiting for it to crash by itself, the PC is still not able to display correctly the GUI, even on other browser/applications as shown in the screenshots.
    1st Hardware Config:
    Intel Core2Quad Q9450
    4x2GB DDR2
    MSI P43 motherboard
    Ati Radeon x550 video card
    Software used, that seemed important for me to mention:
    NOD32 v4.2
    Comodo Firewall 5.12
    Chrome
    Screenshot Captor
    SpeedFan
    Other mentions:
    Aero is disabled, because I've considered that it's one of the causes.
    So, I've considered that it's a RAM issue or a videocard issue, and I've upgraded to:
    Intel Core i7 3770k
    4x8GB DDR3
    Asus P8Z77V-LX motherboard
    Intel GPU integrated in the 3770k CPU
    The problem just happened 2 times on this rig also, and the RAM was not even coming close to  it's maximum capacity of 31.7GB. It was at ~20GB's.
    Also, this is another videocard(Intel's integrated GPU), so we can exclude the videocard from the suspects.
    My suspects:
    1) some desktop manager bugs, or other similar issue
    2)  video memory allocation - I'm still suspecting that it can be caused by the amount of RAM dedicated to the videocard, currently, I think  that it is at 256MB.
    3) some poorly designed components of Chrome/Screenshot Captor - still very questionable since there are enough resources on this system, so there should be no fight over resources. And when the system is barely used there are no issues.
    4) Adobe Shockwave Flash - maybe this one????
    I have attached a set of 20 screenshots here, these were taken on the 1st configuration of my PC, using Q9450:
    http://imgur.com/a/Mc8hI#4
    Notice how it distorts the image by duplicating it and showing it in a smaller space, or how does it displays those black rectangles. In those moments, the PC is fully functional(the apps are running the background), without being slowish or something, but
    you can hardly control it like that. For example, I've tried to remove the mouse from the USB, and then I've insterted it back, the image was not displayed correctly, but the mouse was recognised instantly and the pointer was controlable.
    Same thing still happens on the new configuration. Please advise me.
    LE: OS is Windows 7 x64 SP1 Professional and it's Geniune. There is no cracked software on this PC. No games. I've tried to maintain it as clean as possible.

    Hi,
    First, please be ensured that you have installed the latest drivers and all the updates.
    Then check whether this issue will not in
    Safe Mode. If it didn’t occurred, I suggest you narrow down the cause in
    Clean Boot mode.
    In addition, try to create a new profile to see how it works.
    Hope this helps.

  • Non-standard desktop GUI

    I am not sure whether have someone discussed this issue before.
    I am trying to develop a cross-platform desktop application. My first problem is the GUI. Java is the way to go but I can't find anything on having a customised window frame.
    What I am trying to do is create an application that don't have the standard rectangular or square frame shape with the 3 icons on the top right. Rather I want an odd shape frame and then fill it the standard GUI components.
    Is this possible, please advise. If yes, I would appreciate if someone can offer clues or links to where I can start.

    You will need to write your own custom control. Check google for creating custom java controls or objects.

  • [SOLVED] Slow Desktop GUI components

    Arch Linux 64
    i5 -2500k  / 8GB Ram /  Nvidia with the closed source drivers
    OpenBox
    LXPanel
    compton-git (from AUR)
    I am running into a strange recurring problem for some time now.
    Even though running and launching applications is fast, various GUI components of individual apps are lagging.
    For example moving through the preferences tabs of Pidgin, or preferences tabs of firefox, or changing between open tabs in Firefox( does not happen in Chrome) or generally using the GUI dialogs of certain applications might take 2-3 seconds from the time I clicked to the gui component to the time the change occurs (for example changing from one preference tab to another).
    I do not have any performance issues generally in the system, except those gui components that are painfully slow.
    Things i have tried so far:
    -Initially i thought it was only manifesting in firefox so I reseted the profile but that did not improve the situation.
    -I thought it might have to do with GTK so I deleted the .gtk-bookmarks from home dir (in order to be recreated) but that did not improve the situation. I still believe it might have something to do with GTK.
    any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    After more experimentation I am now fairly certain that the issue is caused by compton.
    I looked into the bugs reported for compton and apparently there are some issues caused by it when used with the nvidia driver having set the backend option to "glx".
    With the following compton config it seems to be working correctly with no slowness.
    backend = "xr_glx_hybrid"
    vsync = "opengl-swc"
    glx-no-rebind-pixmap = true
    glx-no-stencil = true
    paint-on-overlay = true
    unredir-if-possible = true
    Note that the backend "xr_glx_hybrid" config option is only available(for now) from the "compton-git" package and not "compton" package.
    I do not mark it yet as "Solved" as I want to use it for sometime to be certain.

  • Rich desktop GUI functionality on a thin client

    is it possible to implement a graphical higherarcial tree like GUI representing orgainsation -> teams -> users on a thin client, where by its possible to drill down from an orgainsation down to the user , also to be able to drag and drop users between different teams, with a back end servelt then kicking off the back end processes to update the users association to a different team? the users need to have roles and privalges assoctaied to them with a log in facility?
    there needs to be right click functioanity to add users, delete users , etc...
    also once drilled to an individaul user i need to be able to display all details of the user edit / enter the details of the user allocate privialges for the user , allocate types of work to the user ---all this though i understand as its just simple requests to retrive data from data base or display data from database ---the issue here though is that i need to be able to display this in sepearte panes / frames (ie. smaller windows ) next to the graphical tree structure of the users and have tabs at top to be able to go to the dufferent types of forms (ie. the form to edit the user deitals , form to prsent the types of work to allocate to user, form to set prvilages for user etc...) ie. these all seem like just forms but they need to reside inside tab liknks within there own window / frame.
    my understanding is that i can use web portal here to represent these different forms in there own window but how would they then be linked to the graphical representation of the user. ie as i change the user i need to be able to retrieve all his data etc.. i suppose it can kick off a servlet to get that data - what is the best way to do this functuality.
    is this type of functioanlty possible on a thin client - web browser?
    i have read things on AJAX to do asyncrounous calls to back end processes - but how do i make this transactionallly safe then ie. what if i drag and drop a user and use java script to trigger a back end process to change the user to a different team but the back end process fails but i've already made the change on client side - or maybe i dont quite undersatnd ajax , maybe ajax keeps the rest of the unchanged data static and waits on the transactional change of user to occur before alloing the drag and drop of user to be dedrawn ??
    please i need some advice on types of technology that can be used to implemnet this functionality. i've been told about struts not being good enough and JSF being the new better tech - i need to implement it in weblogic server , using weblogic web portal.
    Thanks - in advance.

  • MVC - Organizing models and managing GUI windows

    I'm having difficulty organizing my MVC models and basically controlling the whole application in general. My application works, but all the controlling logic is being dumped into the main class (Main.java). Here's a simple example of the problem I'm having:
    Objectives
    1) Display a list of Companies; i.e. Sun, Microsoft, Adobe, etc. (JFrame with a JList)
    2) The user select a Company and it pops up a new dialog with a list of Employees. (JDialog with a JList)
    Here are the classes I came up with:
    Models:
    1) CompanyListModel
    2) EmployeeListModel
    Listeners:
    1) CompanyListener
    Views:
    1) CompanyListFrame
    2) EmployeeListDialog
    Domain Objects:
    1) Company
    2) Employee
    And then there's the main application class. To implement the above objective, I've been using my main class to control the GUI.
    Here's an example of how I've implemented it.
    public class Main implements CompanyListener {
        /** Creates a new instance of Main */
        public Main() {
            CompanyListModel companyModel = new CompanyListModel();
            companyModel.addCompanyListener(this);
            CompanyListFrame gui = new CompanyListFrame(companyModel);
        // A company was selected.  Open a new dialog and display the employees
        public void companySelected(CompanyModel companyModel) {
            Company company = companyModel.getCompany();
            EmployeeListModel employeeModel = new EmployeeListModel(company));
            EmployeeListDialog = new EmployeeListDialog(employeeModel);
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            new Main();
    }My program is similiar design wise to the above, but contains many more classes. I'm still using my main class to control GUI logic (popping up new windows and creating models, etc). Thus, my main class implements like 5 different listeners. I'm sure this is a really poor design choice, I just don't know how else to implement it.
    I should not nest models... correct? I was thinking about nesting the models, i.e. CompanyListModel contains an EmployeeListModel, but then the CompanyListModel will need to spawn the EmployeeListDialog when a Company is selected, right? Thus, I'd be mixing the view with the model.
    Please provide some advice! :( Thanks!

    I'm sorry, I read your reply about 3 times and I've
    spent the last 20 minutes trying to implement it.
    I'm just not sure how the controllers are involved.
    Could you possibly provide source code for the
    controllers (and any part of the models / views that
    communicate with the controller)?No source code. Read about the MVC pattern.
    I feel like this is a wasted effort. I'm the sole
    entry level programmer at my company and I have only
    one year real wold experience . I work with about 10
    other senior level (microsoft) programmers and none
    of them code in this fashion. All of our
    applications are desktop applications using C#,
    C/C++, or scripting languages.What's a wasted effort? You posting a question? Me posting a response? You writing Java? You trying to think about how to do this properly?
    So why are you using Java if you're in a Microsoft shop? How's this working out with your co-workers?
    I feel like if I worked on a project with one of
    them, they would criticize me for using MVC and
    "complicating" such a simple issue.That's usually because Microsoft likes tying a particular text box to a column in a table. If you change the textbox value you change the database. Nice and easy, right?
    In trying to implement this solution, my workspace
    now has a huge load of classes for something so
    simple:
    Company
    CompanyFrame
    CompanyListController
    CompanyListListener
    CompanyListModel
    CompanyListPanel
    Employee
    EmployeeListDialog
    EmployeeListModel
    EmployeeListPanel
    Main
    11 classes and I left out the Emp Controller and
    Listener to simplify the example. The more classes
    that you have, the slower the application startup
    time. Moving the Views to JPanels as you suggested
    seemed smart but it wound up making it more
    difficult. I'm using NetBeans and Matisse and I
    don't believe you can use another JPanel class in the
    GUI editor unless you make it a bean.
    Traditionally, I would have implemented as follows.
    I would have completed it in 5 minutes and it would
    be much easier to understand what's going on:
    Company
    CompanyFrame - contains a list of companies
    Employee
    EmployeeListDialog - contains a list of employees
    Main
    Of course doing it this way I'd be mixing data with
    the view, but is that always a bad thing or is it
    only bad for large scale applications? Should MVC
    not be used for small modules like this?For small modules that are nothing more the CRUD operations, it might be that a simpler approach is fine. (PS - CRUD stands for Create/Read/Update/Delete, standard relational operations on tables. I'm not commenting on you or your code.)
    It only becomes a problem when that "simple" CRUD application decides to branch into something bigger. The approach of mingling view and data can become problematic then.
    It's still possible to have a clean application for small apps. I think most Microsoft programmers do it that way because the wizards and stuff they're used only allow it to be done that way.
    The reasons why I'm going away from my old "academic"
    programming practices is:
    1) I want to become a better programmer of course!Kudos to you. At least you're still thinking about it.
    2) There's alot of database queries in this
    application so I wanted to separate that from the GUI
    as much as possible. Thus, each model knows how to
    query the database and it's all done on separate
    threads.That's good motivation, too.
    I'd really like to do this right. If you could
    provide source that would be great. Also, are there
    any good books on desktop GUI development geared
    towards Java (or even C#)?I don't write for the desktop, so I'm not much help.
    I already purchased the e-book Desktop Java Live,
    which is great but they don't go into detail about
    MVC and instead use Model-Presenter which has been
    retired (according to Fowlers website). I found that
    section fairly confusing so I figured I'd start with
    MVC since it's more widespread (?).If you're reading Martin Fowler you're doing well.
    Thank you.I'm sorry that I'm not more helpful.

  • Java Desktop System Release 3 - Login problems

    Hi all,
    This is my first post here so apologies if I'm in the wrong area. I've recently installed Solaris 10 (5.10 Generic_118833-36) onto a V245. I wanted to see if I could get the gui desktop to work so I downloaded/installed Hummingbird Exceed on to my Windows XP workstation. Having launched Exceed XDMCP broadcast I could see my host in the list so I selected and clicked OK. I was instantly presented with the blue login shell, so good so far. In options, sessions I chose Java Desktop System release 3. When I tried to login as root the login shell just dies and disappears but If I use a non-root account it takes me all the way in to the desktop gui. The same thing happens if I use select CDE as the session type as well.
    So my question is how do you login as root?
    I gues it's a config file somehwere that needs a tweak but I've not been able to find anything helpful on Goolge so far.
    Any help is most appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jon Barker

    I just removed the locales using the same tool and I can log in now.
    Does anyone have any idea why this is or the correct way to install extra locales ?
    Thanks

  • SAP GUI issues - VA41 - additonal data B screen is not visible completly

    Hello everyone,
    Tthere was a problem reported by one of our sales users that in VA41/VA42 screen, there are different tables available, there is a tab "Additional data B" for one user only half of the tab is visible in the presentation server. The user is not able to scroll right/left and couldn't do any data entry on that screen.
    Any one has any clue why this issue is only for this user.
    The GUI version and patch : 7.10 with Patch level 3 ( File version : 7100.1.3.1029)
    When we ask the user to try logging with his id in another PC, the table is visible completely. Both the desktop' GUI version is all the same. No other user is having this issue except one user. Hence I think it is related to GUI issue.
    If anyone faced this issue before, please suggest a resolution/workaround
    Please don't suggest for higher level patch, other PC's with the same level patch is working fine.
    Rajan

    We had a similar issue with a different t-code. The user also had a problem with Outlook and the CRM system we use. We eventually decided thet athe user's profile information was corrupted.
    We deleted the user's windows profile on the particular PC and then created it again. This fixed the problem - probably not the best answer, but it worked.

  • Re-sizeable/scrollable Multi-window GUI

    Hi all,
    I've developed a desktop GUI using Netbeans 5.5 and 6.0 without prior GUI design experience, it was relatively easy to use until I started creating multiple windows; I have difficulties creating multiple re-sizable, scrollable text areas. I need something similar to Netbeans itself which has different windows/text areas which users can display/hide/move/resize etc.
    I'm wondering if I should continue using Netneans or try other tools/techniques/frameworks. I'd appreciates sharing your experience/ideas.
    Thanks

    for each window or iframe, put it's own text area in it's own scrollpane.
    There are docking frameworks available if you want to do something more like an IDE, or there's always JDesktopPane and JInternalFrame in Swing.
    But I think you need to be more specific in what you are asking. What is the problem you are actually having?

  • Simple MVC desktop example wanted

    Hi,
    I've been looking and can't find a good example of MVC in a desktop application. I don't mean MVC as it is used in component development (I've seen some examples relating to Swing and Buttonmodels, for instance), but more business-object level. I'm not a Java or Swing expert, but I have been programming for a while and and am pretty comfortable writing non-UI Java classes and simple Swing apps. But I want to know how to do this right.
    Here's the simplest example I can think of to explain my confusion:
    Suppose I have a class called Customer with fields FirstName and LastName. Suppose further I want to create a desktop GUI that allows the customer to edit that model in two separate windows in such a way that changes in one edit window are immediately reflected in the other, and I want clean separation of presentation and logic.
    The example doesn't have to be in Swing, but it shouldn't require a server.
    Thanks for any help you can give on this - and, if this isn't the right place to post this query, I'd appreciate a pointer to a more appropriate forum.

    There are many ways but here is a simple example of how I do it.

  • Adding KDE desktop to console based Solaris 11

    Im new to solaris, previously i hav used Linux preloaded with KDE or Gnome. I m using solaris 11 x86 on my Win7 ultimate with VMware Workstation. I used text installer to install on virtual disk and now this black screen makes me feel sick and tired.
    I want to install kde desktop GUI on this but i couldnt find packages for kde
    somebody help me with package and installing commands(new to CLI)

    If you want to install a desktop by default, I'd suggest downloading the live CD and installing from it as it'll give you exactly the solaris-desktop package set, and do so more quickly than the two-step process you've gone through in this case.
    Running your own repository can be useful if you're going to deploy a lot of Solaris instances.

  • Remoteapp and Desktop Connections Self signed Cert

    I know there are similar post on this subject though I did not find the answer that I was looking for.  I am using rdweb services to publish applications over a WAN connection to our remote office as our SQL server applications reside in our main office.
    Both offices are on the same domain/network. I do not need rdweb services to be accessed via the internet to outside users so I am relying on the internal cert to make all of this work internally.  At this time the rdweb interface works fine but the remote
    office would like to utilize the RemoteApp and Desktop connections so they will not have to use the web interface but I get the same error message everyone else has posted about there being a problem with the certificate and I am not able to get any further
    in the wizard at this time.
    I have created my own self signed certificate via the Remote Desktop GUI, exported the cert and imported to my client PC but still it does not work.  I don't have alot of experience with the certs and possibly am doing something wrong so will give the
    info to see if someone can help me out.
    Server name: TS1
    Domain: coa.local
    I have created the certificate several times with the following: ts1.coa.local, *.coa.local. Once done I have exported the cert and imported to the Trusted root auth of the local computer. I have then launched the Remoteapp and Desktop wizard and filled
    in the field with https://ts1/rdweb which did not work. I tried https://ts1.coa.local/rdweb which also did not work. Am I not filling in the correct syntax or is there something else I might be missing as it stops there and tells me there is a problem with
    the websites certificate.  I am stumped and hope someone can help me out as I have burned alot of time trying to make this work.
    Thank you

    Have you made any progress on this problem?
