Desktop Icon and updating

Hey iTunes! Stop putting an icon on my desktop every time I update. If I wanted your crappy icon on my desktop I would have put it there to begin with.

Are that internet shortcuts (.URL) or shortcuts to the Firefox program ?
You can check that via the right-click context menu (Properties).
If that are internet shortcuts then you have a problem with the default browser.

What is the file system of that external HD? is it MacOS Extended (Journaled)?
Which iPhoto version do you have?
If you directly select the iPhoto Library in the Finder and use "File > Get Info", does the library still show as "Kind: iPhoto Library" and is the file size correct for 22000 Photos?
If the library does no longer have the correct size, restore it from your backup.
But if the library has the correct size, try to open it directly by clicking it. This should work, if your iPhoto version is iPhoto '11.

I'm part of the community but when i open it through my desktop icon and try to login it says i have to verify my email i thought i already did?

I'm able to login to Apple via the internet but when I try to open iTunes through my PC desktop icon and Login it says i still have to verify my account. what do i do, how do i login?

Accidently trashed my desktop icon and deleted it

I accidently trashed my desktop icon and deleted it. Ugh. Somehow I had a desktop folder in the home folder and I thought it was a duplicate. Stupid me. I have rebooted and the icon is gone. Also tried to restor in the Find preferences but it will not allow me to check the box. Help!!!!!

Navigate in the Finder to your Home folder. Create a new folder (COMMAND-SHIFT-N) and name it Desktop.

Stopping Desktop ICON when Updating reader

Every time I Update Reader, it installs a desktop icon for reader. There doesn't appear to be an option to avoid that. I must drag it to the Recycle Bin every time and that is annoying. If I allowed every application on my computer to put an icon on the desktop, I'd need to scroll the desktop to find all of them. That would make the desktop less than useful. So could someone get to Adobe and suggest that they stop automatically putting an icon to reader on my desktop each time they release an upgrade? Besides, when does anyone ever launch the reader that way? I always double-click a PDF file and the reader opens. Who needs the icon?
Another issue is the installation of scripts (or apps) that run at startup. Again, if every program on my PC did that, I could go buy my groceries while the computer was booting. Fortunately, I have a program that watches for those startup applications and gives the option to allow or disallow the registry change. I usually disallow them for the reason stated. Unless these startup routines are absolutely essential in order for Adobe Reader to run, they should be made optional. I only have 1.5 GB of RAM and that could get filled just with resident apps loaded at boot time. As it is, over half of that memory space is gone by the time the operating system is fully loaded, including the various resident programs loaded by each of my applications.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how to stop this gluttony?

but they will forever be tied to your appleID so you can redownload them for free there is no way around that but they are not taking up storage or anything when they live in purchase

Trashed desktop icon and files

Please don't ask why or how - but I have trashed the desktop icon along with its files. It is the icon seen on the left after clicking on the desktop hard disk icon. It is with other icons like documents, movies, music, etc. I have tried to removed it from the trash and return it to it correct place but it won't allow me to do so. I have tried pulling the trashed files back to the desktop but when I click on a file I see the message "Unable to open because file is in trash".
Any suggestions?

Your post confuses me. Are you saying that you have trashed the Desktop icon from the very left hand of a Finder window, i.e. the Sidebar? If this is so, then that is not the actual Desktop folder, but just a link to the folder. It can be removed from the Sidebar, but not trashed.
Anyway, your Desktop files are now apparently residing in the Trash. Files in the Trash should be able to be just dragged out again. You cannot open a file in the Trash, but you should be able to open the Trash and then just drag the files back to the Desktop or wherever.
In an open Finder window, in column view, click once on your HD and then navigate through to users, "you". Is there a desktop icon there? Is there anything in it?
This all seems quite strange to me.

Grid pattern around desktop icons and pointer?

I'm starting to get a square pattern of short lines, about an inch square, around all the icons on the desktop, in the dock, and the arrow pointer. Windows all appear OK, as is the background where there are no icons or folders, so it seems to be an OS problem. Any ideas?

Apples Support has confirmed that I actually have a failed Video RAM chip. It's being fixed today under my AppleCare contract. Ther is another thread about this I posted in the iMac G5 display forum for those with a similar problem, including a screenshot from another user.

Desktop icons and window commands

I've had my MacBook Pro since August...having been on Windows for 12 years. I've done a lot of reading and am slowly getting used to it.
I vaguely remember reading somewhere that putting icons on the desktop is something Apple discourages. Is that true and if so why?
I'm also just curious why the 'close window' and 'diminish window', etc. commands are in the upper left corner instead of the right.

Wow, now I understand why my PC was really slower then it should have been. Shish, by the time the Google shortcut on my desktop would open, I'd forgot what I wanted to look up. It has been a challenge learning to use tabs but at least now the sites open in time for me to know why the heck I'm going there. I am still finding it hard to keep everything in folders but I do like the clean look of the desktop now. I thought maybe Steve was a neat freak and that's why it's designed like that too
And I too love keyboard shortcuts. Some of my apps won't close unless I use Command+Q. Then they close without that inane 'are you sure' menu popping up. I use the MacBook so shortcuts are a must.
And BINGO, Yodsquick to why the 'close, etc' commands are on the left. I really did wonder if Steve was left handed although I thought maybe it was related to the Mac OS being based on Linux too. But sig...why DO they drive on the left side of the road in Europe?

You can't install Snow Leopard Remotely. Think about it.
What you could do - and assuming you have OSX Server - is install 10.6 on one mac, get it fully up to date, install the remaining applications - assuming site licenses - use the System Image Utility on the Server (or a Client with the application installed) to create a NetBoot Image of that built workstation. Image the rest using OSX Server's NetBoot Service. I've done numerous site installations using OSX Server and NetBoot (60 and more individual workstations) in a day or two depending on the Software installed.

Apart from the initial OS install - Yes. You can install incremental OS Updates using ARD easily and quickly. Again if you have OSX Server you can utilise it's Software Update Service to achieve the same thing quickly and easily.
If you don't have OSX Server you can by all means do this the way you're saying. You don't even need to use SuperDuper - why pay for something that can be done for free with what's already supplied? All you need is a firewire cable, target disk mode and the Restore option in Disk Utility. The more firewire cables you have the sooner you'll get it done.
It does not really matter what you're using for your Network although a Time Machine Capsule is adequate enough.

I have been trying to update mt curve 8300 and when I try and download the file I get a file not found. I have ATT. Someone please help.

1. Desktop Manager 4.6.0 B16 Multilanguage - With Media Manager... Download Software, save to desktop. install to PC.
2. BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.5.0.152 (Multilanguage) for 8300 smartphone... Download Software, save to desktop. install to PC(Desktop Manager must be closed.
3. Open Desktop Manager, plug in device, select UPDATE.

Hide desktop icon and keep text

I would like for my desktop not to have icon, but still have the text for the shortcut. I know you can accomplish this by making the icon a transparent image but, it still has the highlighted box around the transparent image when you click it once. Is there a way to get around this?

I use Overflow which does that stated above but even better as it doesn't require opening and closing a seperate folder, or right-clicking, for your files.
