Desktop Icon for mounted Samba/Windows share

Hi All,
I have recently moved over to Leopard and have found somthing to be missing that was enabled by default (it seems) in Tiger.
If I mount a Samba/Windows share, there is no icon automatically placed on the desktop (as with USB drives etc) but there was in Tiger. I basically used these icons to know when finishing up for work at the end of the day if there were still any shares mounted before putting my machine to sleep so I would remember to unmount them. Now I don't have the visual cue, so I often get home and Finder locks up a bit and eventually tells me that the shares have been disconnected.
Is there any way to turn this feature back on?

Wow. I feel so stupid. I'm pretty sure I even looked in there and somehow missed it. I think I was looking for something similar to the check box list there is for the sidebar in the Finder preferences.
Thanks for that.

  • Strange behaviour of name used for desktop icon when mounting SMB shares

My iMac is joined to a Windows Active Directory domain. This works fine. User logins are setup to mount various Windows shares at login time using some custom scripts that I have written, invoked from an Applescript app that runs as a login item. Again this works very nicely. The one strange thing is as follows, and this is troublesome for me...
The sequence of commands used to perform the mount is:
    mkdir /Volumes/mountpoint
    mount -t smbfs //servername/sharename /Volumes/mountpoint
This correctly mounts the share on /Volumes/mountpoint
but the desktop icon that appears as a result is called 'sharename' not 'mountpoint'. Why is this a problem? Well consider that one has the following shares that one wants to mount:
//Server1/System (will be mounted on /Volumes/Server1System)
//Server2/System (will be mounted on //Volumes/Server2System)
what I'd like to see are two desktop icons with names 'Server1System' and 'Server2System' but in fact I end up with two icons both called 'System' with no way to tell which is which other than actually opening one of them in Finder.
    Anyone know
    (a)    Is this behaviour expected (i.e. by design)?
    (b)    Is there a way to control the name used for the desktop icon when mounting things this way?
    Thanks!

But, to invoke your app you will need to include it, otherwise you get the error above
    sometimes you call
    http://host:port/blank/page.jsp
    instead of
    http://host:port/blank/faces/page.jsp
In the last one the Faces Servlet will get your request and locate page.jsp inside the faces context. If you don't include it then you get that error

  • Missing desktop icon for Seagate 500GB FW external drive

I have recently lost my desktop icon for my Seagate 500GB FW external drive.... it there!!!! System profiler sees it, so does Disk Utilities and even my back up program will still back up to it. However no desktop icon to access it...What did I do or did not do HELP!!!
    iMAC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1G RAM

Did you ever figure this one out?
I have seen two external Seagate drives (FW, 500GB) stop mounting after about one use on a mac. Neither of them would show up under windows XP or 2000 afterwards.
I reformatted one, and am wondering if I'll need to do the same thing to the other.
    Thanks for any info!

  • How do I change the desktop Icon for an external hard drive?  I have gone to "Get Info" and tried dragging and dropping  several formats of pictures and the icon changes to the generic image of that file type.

how can I change the desktop icon for an external hard drive.  Using LaCies and Dimple hard drives.

One of the things I've found with OS X (at least with Snow Leopard, which is my first excursion into OS X), is that all too often the thumbnail displayed on a file, whether a file created or one downloaded, is a false thumbnail. That is, when you do a Get Info on the file the icon in the upper left is the generic icon for that file type, rather than the thumbnail displayed in Finder. Makes it a bit difficult to copy.
Apparently Finder uses Preview in the background to generate the displayed thumbnail without actually creating one.
What I've resorted to doing, particularly with graphic images, is to process them with GraphicConverter - I have its prefs set to automatially add thumbnails and previews. With an individual file this means opening it in GC and doing a Save As. However, a much easier and faster way is when there are two or more such files; I put them in a common folder and drop the folder onto GC. GC then opens them in a catalog view, in the process adding real thumbnails and previews to each automatically. Doesn't take long to do several hundred files that way.

  • How do I create a desktop Icon for Adobe create pdf?

How do I create a desktop icon for Adobe create pdf?

    Hi, ken.
You can access ExportPDF from your computer more quickly in three ways:
You can download and install the CreatePDF Desktop Application. More info is here. With this application, you can drag PDF files onto a desktop icon and have those converted to Office files. (If you subscribe to the CreatePDF service, this application will also allow you to create PDF files.)
You can download and install the newest Adobe Reader and access the service using Reader's Tools Pane on right. Then, any time you have PDF open in Reader, you can (with a couple of clicks) convert that PDF to an Office file.
You can drag the webpage icon from your browser to your desktop. This will create a shortcut to the ExportPDF website on your desktop. Here are some instructions for doing that using Internet Explorer or Firefox.
Let us know if you have additional questions or issues.

  • Desktop icon for a file on network shows blank in Windows 8.1, if selected the second icon from the library

    Hello,
I have a strange issue on my Windows 8.1 machine. The icon for for an executable file on the network shows blank, if I select the second icon from the library. (File->Properties->Change Icon and select the second icon - This file has two icons)
If I re-create the IconCache.db, then it is showing correctly. But I do not want to do this every time.
    Regards
    Mattehw

It indicates your Icon Cache is corrupted and you need to rebuild it.
Open the command prompt window, type each of the following and after every command, hit the Enter button:
    cd /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
    attrib –h IconCache.db
    del IconCache.db
    start explorer

  • How do I change the desktop icon for an MS-Dos Fat formatted flash drive in Lion?

I have a bunch of flash drives I need to format for work, and we want to put our company logo as the icon for each drive.  We wanted to format them as MS-Dos Fat so that they'll be readable and writeable on both Mac and Windows computers.  But when I format them that way and change the icon, it displays as a generic preview JPEG image instead of the real image or even the default hard drive icon.
I managed to fix it so the icon will display properly in Snow Leopard, but in Lion the drive still mounts with the generic Preview thumbnail.
Is there any way I can easily format a flash drive so that a) it will be readable and writeable on Windows and OSX machines and b) have the icon for the drive appear correctly on Lion, Snow Leopard, and windows machines?
    Thanks!

Command- i will open the info pane of your icon.
Try opening and "selecting all" ⌘-A (of your preferred image,) then copy and paste your preferred image on the high-lighted icon in the upper left.

  • How to create shortcut desktop icon for all users???

    Hello All,
I want to know how to create shortcut icon for all users in windows 7. I tried C:\Users\Public but no folder for Desktop.
    Thanks

    C:\users\All users
    JS
    Hi,
I am just wondering, what is the technically correct location to place say, a shortcut, for all users to access on their desktops on a given machine?
    Is it C:\Users\Public\Desktop ?
    Or is it C:\Users\All Users\Desktop ?
Would it also be possible to explain the differences as well? Or paste some links to the overview of each one? I am having trouble finding anything from MS.
    Thank you.

  • Slow Folder View When Mounting to Windows Share

I'm an intern at an educational institute and we have a graphics lab that has access to a large windows share. They use the share for storing large picture files primarily. Only individuals in certain classes have access to the drive and each student has their individual folder. Graphics shares this share with cad students so the share is called CADShare
On a windows machine when the student connects the only folder that is seen is their own which is folder name = 'firstname.lastname'
On a mac it seems to load every students folder within the share (around 400 students maybe?) and then pull every folder that it populated until the only one seen is the one you have permissions to. It will behave slightly different depending on the folder view.
If the folder is being viewed in list or detail view it will populate/unpopulate instantly and will cause the machine to 'hang' while it's doing this. But if the folder is in folder view it will only populate the full amount of folders. If you click on a folder that is supposed to be hidden it will then unpopulate that folder.
This is becoming an issue for students trying to save and access files in Adobe cs2 but it seems to be more of a problem with the finder than it is with Adobe.
Is there a way to change view settings to be more friendly to windows shares for it not to lag this much when viewing or has anyone seen anything like this?
Any thoughts or solutions would be helpful :]

We've tried something similar to that, they actually connect using afp rather than smb?
    But we've tried connecting:
    afp://server/CADShare/firstname.lastname/
    and
    afp://server/CADShare/firstname.lastname/
It seems to connect to their share directly but it still mounts CADShare so when students browse for files through an application, for example the graphics students are using the "place" command, they experience that lag because of the volume of folders.
It seems like it might just be something our network guy should handle by either making each students folder an individual share or nesting the folders by class or instructor.
Thanks so far though, any other ideas?

  • No desktop icon for camera

Hey Everyone, when I connect my HP 817 camera iPhoto automatically opens but I don't get an icon on my desktop. When I connect a USB drive it shows, same for my iPod but not my camera. Is there a setting to change to make cameras open on the desk top instead of iPhoto all the time? I don't always want to import photos into iPhoto. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks
    DRyanC

For the camera to mount on the desktop it has to be able to be recognized as a removable storage device. The support for mounting the HP 817 as a removable storage device on the desktop must not be in OS X yet.

  • Green Desktop Icon (for the external HD) for Time Machine

After I choosed my external Lacie HD as the BackUp Volume for Time Machine, the icon (on the Desktop) didn't change into the green (original) Time Machine Volume. How can I change that? Thanks a lot for your help, Beat.

I had a similar problem where my HD desktop icon originally changed to the green TM icon then reverted back to the original icon after I made some changes to TM preferences. To get the green TM icon back select the HD icon on your desktop and Get Info (Command-I). At the top of the Get Info dialog box next to the drive's name, click on the icon of the HD. It should have a light blue halo around it when selected. Once selected press the Delete key and the green TM HD icon should appear in place of the original HD icon.
    That worked for me.

  • How do I stop desktop icons from moving around - Windows 7 Professional 64 bit?

This just started occuring 7/8/12.  Recently added UPromise turbo saver to my Internet Explorer.  Also did a Java update.  Can't really remember if they were done before or after problem began.  Now, all my desktop icons flip around and will not lock into where I place them.  How can I stop this.

Hi there makeyesup!:Well you have 2 choices; go to Control Panel then look for System Recovery then follow what you see on your monitor if you see a calendar, that is System Restore select the latest date that you can remember your icons acting normally then restart anew & wait until the program straightens it out it should be as good as new
    2. right click your rodent & look for anything that says Arrainge icons... hit auto or whatever gets them normal
    3. restart PC then before the desktop shows up press the F8 key the look for & select "Last good configuration that worked" then restart
    good luck
    hope this helps

  • Mount a windows share

    Hi everybody...I have a simple question...how can I mount a windows
partition on a sparc solaris system?
are there any program like smbmount on linux?would be better if could be free...thanks a lot..David

as far as I know, the (simple) answer is: no.
Linux kernel supports a file system called smbfs, which is required to mount windows shares.
There is no smbfs under Solaris, so smbmount isn't available.

  • Issues mounting a windows share

Our printshop has a FTP directory set up on one of the office's Windows servers. We've shared it so we can mount it on our Mac desktops in the prepress department.
After setting up sharing, I tested it from my Mac, going under the Go menu in the Finder and selecting Connect to Server... This brings up a dialog to enter a user name and password. I did so and the share mounted with no problem. Then I went to mount it on another machine but rather than get the user name/password entry dialog, it got an error message that the user name/password were incorrect.
I had two more machines to test this on. On one of them the user name/password dialog came up and I was able to mount the share, but on the last Mac I got the same error message as I did on the second one--it never gave me an opportunity to enter a user name and password.
Then this morning I tested again on one of the machines that wouldn't mount it yesterday and it opened up the user name/password dialog as it should.
Does anyone have any idea what's up with this?
These are all MDD G4s running 10.4.11.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
Sorry I do not have enough knowledge about Linux commands. I searched for the error and some people mentioned to use absolute path in command line. It is recommended to post the question to a Linux forum for further information.
