Desktop Icon problem

Since upgrading to Lion on my Mac Pro, when I start up, all the desktop icons appear on top of each other in a stack, I then have to select all and go to view clean up. they then appear normally. I have 2 monitors connected therefore I am in extended desktop mode. Also with the change desktop box in desktop and screen saver panel de-selected, my desktop picture keeps changing.
Mike

You are probably playing WoW with a smaller screen resolution than your normal setting. This moves the files and folders on the desktop to the centre to make them fit on the "smaller" desktop. When going back to the normal resolution they simply stay where they were before (=more towards the centre). That's not a serious problem.

  • Windows 8.1 Moving Desktop Icons Problem

I just installed Windows 8.1 and I'm very happy with it. There is just one problem I have and I hope you can help me resolve it.
I can't move my desktop icons. Windows is newly installed and I don't have any third-party software that could mess up everything. I searched across the web for different solution but none of these work. I tried to install all the updates but that didn't
change anything. They said I should try pressing Escape button three times. I pressed Escape three times, but that also didn't work. Then somebody said that possibly the Esc button on keyboard may be stuck. But this problem continued even after I plugged out
    my keyboard!
I can't think of another solution to try so I hope you can help me.
EDIT: I'm really sorry, I saw Win 8.1 Visualization, but it says
Virtualization :S I don't know what to do.

    boot in safe mode
If you are able to arrange the desktop icons in safe mode, I would suggest you to perform clean boot.
Refer to the link to perform clean boot.

    Hope this resolves the issue.

  • Unwanted Desktop icon problem

    Hi,
I'm sure I'm being stupid and ignorant, but please help me: an icon for iPhoto Library has appeared on my Desktop - I probably picked it up by mistake on the cursor when I was in iPhoto.  Question is this: to get rid of it, can I just drag it to the Trash bin?  Or will that delete the Library itself?  I'm frightened of losing  all my photos?
    Thanks for your help.

Right or Control click on the desktop iPhoto icon.  If there is an entry in the drop down menu that says "Show package contents," then this IS probably your iPhoto library.  DO NOT DELETE IT! (yet)  If it says something like Show Original then this is an alias icon and you can delete it.  Otherwise:
Open up a finder window and on the left side panel click on Pictures.
Check to see if there is an iPhoto library file there.  If there isn't then drag the icon from the desktop back to the Pictures folder. You are probably okay now.
If there is an iPhoto Library already in the Pictures folder then temporarily rename the icon on the desktop to something like iPhoto Library 2.  Open iPhoto.  Check your photos.  Are they all there.  If they are then the library on the desktop is probably a copy of you iPhoto Library.  Do with it what you want.
If after opening iPhoto you are missing pictures, close iPhoto.  Restart iPhoto while holding down the option key.  This will open a dialog that will allow you to open a different iPhoto Library (the one on your desktop) by clicking on the Other Library button.  Select it and see what photos are in it.
After you have examined both libraries you can decide what you want to do with them.
You can have more that one and select which one to use when you "option start" iPhoto.
    Hope that helped.

  • Desktop Icon problems

It is notable that ms Icons have no problems and others do.
If I delete these icons and replace them, they are fine until the next reboot and they look like this. Blank.ico is in C:/Windows

"MODERN PROGRAMMING is deficient in elementary ways BECAUSE of problems INTRODUCED by MODERN PROGRAMMING." Me

This was after re-adding the vista shortcut manager, setting it show the arrows and the turning them back off and I deleted blank.ico from c:/windows.
Also it was most important to touch each icon with the cursor.

  • Desktop Icon Problem! Please Help

OK I've just done the stupidest thing ever since I first touched a computer. In an effort to clean up my desktop, I put all my icons in a new folder named "icons." I then put all the icons in the trash and emptied the trash. So I went into the icons folder today to access something and it said "the alias could not be opened." I have a number of important things that were on there. Is there anything I can do to retrieve these files? Please help.

It sounds like the original icon files were in the item that was trashed.
Try using an application such as [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive.
It is critical that you do not use the computer or even turn it on until you have rescued your files. Files only have the directory reference to them removed when you empty the trash and are still present on the computer. However, their space is marked as available to any other file creation done on the computer (even done by you booting the computer) and there is risk that your files will be overwritten by the computer.

  • "Show Desktop" icon in Gnome Disappears

    Hello All,
I have GNOME (installed from the repos).  Once every few logins (it seems pretty random) the "show desktop" icon (usually in the lefthand corner) is missing.
If I try and add it again, the new icon actually appears directly to the right of the original. If I logout or reboot, the original icon re-appears.
I have found nothing online relating to this problem, nothing in the forums (one post mentioned it, so I commented, but never got a reply).
I've actually had this issue in another distro since before I started using arch --- Fedora to be precise.  However, I've yet to see it in ubuntu, debian or slackware (and I use ubuntu at work every day, on multiple machines).
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

    Question
When trying to create a desktop icon, it does not go to the URL.....instead I get 'script' and not a website......the script has http//etc but I am not directed to the website......I previously had IE 8 (on Vista).....is that the problem?I do not have any installed plugins....at least none that I know of.....remember I am a new user......Basically, the desktop icon is not going directly to the Mozilla FF to get me to the web site I need to go to.....FF works when I use the Mozilla FF icon.....just not the icons I create.....THANKS!!! I have also tried reinstalling FF and get the same results.....HELP!!!

The address beginning with file:/// denotes a saved file (local file). The file may not be present. You can try dragging the site icon of this page on the left edge of the location (Address) bar and release it on the desktop. Please try opening it. If it still shows an error it could be a problem with the system's zone permissions. You can try setting each zone in the Windows Control Panel or IE > '''Internet Options''' > '''Security''' tab to '''Default Level'''.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Problem with desktop icons

    Hi,
Hope someone can help, my desktop icons have turned into these wierd square buttons with a grey background - The icons are no longer draggable but simply work as buttons.
Basically everything that I dump on the desktop turns into one these grey square buttons.
I've never seen this before - maybe it's a simple solution to solve.
It quite suddenly began doing this when I still had OS 9.0 - can't remember the circumstances since it was quite a while ago...I thought the problem might have gone away when I updated to 9.2.2, but it's still there.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
    cheers
    Andrew

    OS9er...
Have you attempted to change your buttons back to icons?

  • Does Adobe have a 'fix' for the problem of desktop icons turning into Adobe icons after a previous Adobe update?

After a previous Adobe update, all of my desktop icons turned into Adobe icons. I'm not sure how it happened - I just looked away from my computer for a second and when I looked back, there they were!
Does Adobe have a 'fix' for this problem?  I have had to uninstall Adobe in order to use my other programs, but I teach and I use Adobe documents quite often, so now I can't open those.

Try some of the solutions here ---> Application, file icons change to Acrobat/Reader icon

  • Receiving message"There was a problem sending the command to the program" every time I access a website using a desktop icon via Firefox.

When I click on a desktop icon and access a site via Firefox I get the message "There was a problem sending the command to the program". This started to happen after I downloaded the most recent version of Firefox. I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it and the message still comes up every time. The site will come up about three seconds after the message appears but the message is a real pain to put up with. What is the problem? I am ready to dump Firefox and go to Opera.

    Hi bob1935-
I did some research and found a couple of previously answered questions that have multiple options for solving your problem. Please look at these:

  • I was running firefox beta 9,selected about firefox, which then updated to 10, and when opening 10, began to update to version 11. now the desktop icon is beta 9, start menu beta 10, and version 11 is installed. how do i correct this problem?

after updating from beta 9, to 10, to11, my desktop icon still says beta 9. The start menue has beta 10, and will not allow me to select open file location, which when accessing through programs(x86) is listed as beta 9. When checking uninstall programs, beta 11, is listed.
how do i remove references to beta 9 and 10?

    Mr. Willener,
    Thank you for your reply.
I did un-install and then re-install per the Adobe recommendations which are what you listed in your reply.  The problem remained until I did a MS Windows restore to a restore point a month or so ago.  The IE problems vanished.  However, now I'm using an outdated and unsupported version that is lower than most of the web pages require for their sites, at least the ones I want to view (they all say I need to upgrade my Flash Player which, when I did, put me in this fix).
    As to:

You can safely ignore that requirement; it is simply not true.
Why would Adobe post a system requirement of 2.33 Ghz for 11.2 if it simply were not true?

  • Can't drag desktop icons & other problems

Hi.. I cannot drag my desktop icons nor items from a folder to DT. When this happened, I lost printing from my Lexmark E120N, my memory chips were listed as 68k and 28 k when they are 1 gig & 2 gig. That seems to have cleared up. I also cannot copy anything nor paste anything. When attempting to use Tech Tool 5, it opens, but is frozen. I ran it from the install disk & it said everything was fine! Any help will be greatly appreciated.... TIA, Jack PS: I repaired permissions also.

    HI Jack,
You booted from your Apple install disk and the hard disk "*appears to be ok*? Did you check the S.M.A.R.T status? Here's how.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
Also, run the Apple Hardware Test
If you can, make sure your important files are backed up.

  • Problem with desktop icon moving

Whenever I restart my computer, the "Macintosh HD" icon moves to become the bottom icon out of my list of icons, leaving the top right space empty where it usually should be. This has been happening for about a week after having my computer for three months.
Any idea why this is happening?
    thanks.

    Welcome To Discussions aburi!
Positioning Desktop icons, too close to the edge of the screen, will cause them to reposition themselves on restart.
Positioning them too close to each other, will cause this as well.
Depending on how many you have displayed, and the size of your screen, the Size of the icons, as well as the Text size & Label position can also factor in. Experiment with these settings.
My Desktop icons do not reposition themselves, and this is how I have my Desktop View Options set.
    Icon size: 32 x 32
    Text size: 12 pt
    Label position: Bottom
I have none of the following options selected.
    Snap to grid
    Show item info
    Show icon preview
    Keep arranged by
A different configuration may work for you. Experiment with the options until you find something suitable.
Click on an open area of your Desktop.
From the Finder's Toolbar, position your cursor over "View" and pull down to "Show View Options", and click. Or use the Command + J keys.

  • If I mak Firefox my default browsr, will the appearance of my Desktop Icons change? I had this problem with Goog. Chrom. I am using Wind. XP and Inter. Expl. 8.

When I made Google Chrome my default browser, the appearance of my desktop Icons was (nearly) completely changed. Will I experience this if I make Firefox my default browser? I could just go ahead and try Firefox as my default browser and see what happens, but I am running Mozilla Fences and have spent a lot of time getting the appearance of the desktop icons just the way I want them to be.

Firefox shouldn't change the icon of anything except files you set for it to open as deafult. For example, if you have an HTML file on your desktop and set Firefox to open it by default, it will change the icon to Firefox.
