Desktop icons are no longer trusted, custom home directory [solved]

I have my home directory on a raid, and have noticed that after switching it the desktop icons no longer work properly (icons are missing/default blank as well and labeled <filename>.desktop. Even if I create a new launcher on the desktop it still won't work.
For example, I click chromium.desktop, and I get the follow message:
Untrusted application launcher
The application launcher "chromium.desktop" has not been marked as trusted. If you do not know the source of this file, launching it may be unsafe.
Marking it as safe does nothing, launching anyway will work. However, the annoyance of no icons and a <filename>.desktop is rather annoying. If I switch back to my original /home/user$ it works fine again. I even tried binding the raid location to /home/user$ and it still has a problem unless I go back to the original home directory path.
Any thoughts?

Removing "user" from the fstab line of the raid fixed this.

  • My desktop icons are no longer "app related" - no colour!

Hi there. I used a little app called Font Nuke because my Word docs were taking some time to open up and this seems to be font-related. As a result of this, upon the restart, my desktop icons which represent pdf, jpeg, .doc and .xls are all black & white, and the text of all my desktop icons and folders is now looking fuzzy as well as strangely placed. Hmmm. I closed all apps and removed the com.apple.finer.plist doc from my preferences, rebooted, and the problem continues. I see that zooming my desktop icons from 28 (preferred size) to 76 solves the issue, but nobody wants a desktop icon on a laptop screen to be so large. What the......? is going on???? Grateful for any advice on this one! Thanks.

Delete Font Nuke and run this one-line command in the Terminal app, OPTION-click the Finder's Dock icon, and select Relaunch.

  • All my desktop icons are Adobe Reader icons, can't access related files

I was trying to open a file this morning, and when a pop-menu asked what application I wanted to choose (from a list) to open it, I clicked on Adobe Reader - just as a guess.   After that,  just about all my desktop icons are Adobe icons, and when I click on them, the pop up menus says I can't access the file.   These icons also show up on my menu of all my MS Office programs like Outlook, Word, Excel,  etc.
Tech support at Adobe recommended I use System Restore, but it also is now an Adobe icon, so I can't open it.    If anyone can help reverse this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    David

    Hi,
This also happened to me this morning. Now all my icons are PDF symbols and Reader opens when I try to open any other program. I uninstalled Reader it and it fixed itself but when I reinstalled the program the same issue occurred.
I wanted to make PDF reader the default application when openning PDF's vs. Distiller, tinkered and broke my computer.
Any clues on how to bring everything back to normaL?

In that case, there may be a problem with your Finder preferences or window settings.
Try removing these files, then restarting:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    ~/Desktop/.DS_Store
Let me know if you're not sure how to do that.

  • Desktop icons are rearranged after booting

Sometimes - I cannot make up the reason - my desktop icons are rearranged after booting in alphabetical order,
and also the icon-arrangement in some of the folders placed on the desktop is rearranged !!!
I'm used to arrange my icons in my way, and it's terrible, if the icon order is ****** up !!!
What's wrong? What can I do?

It looks like, that there is no solution yet for this problem !!!
As far as I see, there' no thread that offers a solution.
I there a way to knock at Apple's door to see, if they are at least aware of this problem ???
To some degree the problem with the desktop icons has been going on, well, forever!  There were even problems back in OS9 days trying to arrange the desktop the way you personally wanted them.  To solve that problem then the utility DIM (Desktop Icon Manager) was born.  And believe it or not, the OSX descendent of DIM still exists today!  See this link.  Yes, DIM still exists because the problem still exists.
Interestingly enough I don't have the problem with my desktop so I don't use DIM.  I initially did install it before I discovered my desktop icons were staying put without it.  Everywhere else is another story.  Don't get me started on that (d@mn View Options hierarchical effect).
Speaking of View Option, one thing to check is to see if your View Options for the desktop are snap to grid or None.  I use snap to grid.

  • I have an iPad mini, 16GB, running on the 7.1.2 iOS system, my App Store icon is no longer on my home screen and neither is my iTunes Store icon. They are listed in my settings but I can't access any unless through other games, or songs on iPad.

I Have an iPad mini operating on 7.1.2 iOS. My App Store icon as well as my iTunes Store icon are missing from my home scree. They are still listed under my settings, but I can't access them unless it's through an app that already exists. Where can I go to reinstall these?  I use the same Apple ID on my iPhone 5c as well and they are on the iPhone, but I don't know how or why they just disappeared from my iPad and want to know how to get them back without having to reset my iPad and lose what I have on it. Thanks, Karla

Thanks so much! My grandaughters played games on the iPad over Xmas and one of their moms said shed restricted their access! Guess they forgot to enable again. Thank you again! Karla

  • Since last update desktop icon are unstable when closing firefox and firefon doen't release immediately

A recent update to Firefox caused my desktop icons to become unstable and Firefox will not release immediately after closing the program.

Thank you so much wchp, this is brilliant. I have had this annoying problem for a long time. I eventually rang Mac support, they did not know how to fix the problem as you have suggested so they instigated many hardware replacements which eventually left my iMac severely crippled. They eventually replaced it with the latest model. But I spent two months working with a disabled computer which really interfere with my work.
Your solution appears to have solved my problem, at least so far, but I am hopeful that it is a permanent fix. I hope that your suggestions are taken up by Apple support. This may solve many users problems and avoid Apple making expensive fixes that don't actually work.
I thought that the new iMac would not have the 'Wake up from sleep by painting in the login window' problem but it did, this really annoyed me. Anyway now the problem appears to be solved, it's not I will repost and keep working on it. Thanks again.

  • All desktop icons are itunes icons how to change them

how to change desktop icons back to original, as all are iTunes icons now

First I'd set up a System Restore point. Then try applying the LNK registry fix from the following document:

Does that get your icons back to normal?

  • My desktop icons are not displaying properly

After powering up my MacBook Pro, some of my desktop icons show as archives instead of an actual pic of the icon.  I have restarted and that does not change the icons.

Thanks abwhite57 for the suggestion.  I was able to fix the problem before seeing your reply.
As I went thru the process of cleaning up the desktop icons, I noticed that moving one to the trash or to the finder would change the thumnail view back to it's proper appearance.  So an icon would go from one that said "archive" back to thumnail view of it's webpage.  So I then dragged the icon back onto the desktop.  Problem solved.

  • My Desktop Icons are messed up

Also, when my mac enter sleeping mode, the login screen its moved a little bit up too.
Please, help me solve this cause its very irritating.

  • My menu bar icons are no longer in color.  They are solid black.

The Icons on my menu bar following my last update all changed to black and I cannot find anything to change them back.  It just seemed odd that changing them to all black would be part of the update.  How would I change them back to their original colors?

All  menu bar icons are black by default in OS X Yosemite. No preference option is available to change the color.
    Best.

  • Custom Home Directory

We have an Active Directory in which we are working to implement a network based home directory allowing for cross compatibility with Windows and Mac OSX. To simplify things for our users I want to redirect the Documents folder to My Documents, Music to My Documents/My Music and Pictures to My Documents/My Pictures, etc. That way when they click on the meta link for 'Documents' in Windows or OSX, they see all their documents in one location. I have been able to get this to work by deleting the Documents folder and creating a link or alias to My Documents. It seems that even after the folder is created, user logged off and the Documents folder deleted, the next time the user logs in it automatically creates a link to My Documents and even restores the Documents Icon in the Finder. Another problem I've run into is when a user creates a Mobile Account, OSX creates a bare profile locally, then a few minutes later will sync with the server basically overwriting all preference settings and such. It would be nice if OSX could be instructed to attempt to pull a copy of the profile from the network before creating a new one. Another aspect is we have set up a Linux server to host the www folder in the user's profile. I am not able to find a setting in OSX like that of Windows where the machine will try to use the network copy of the file first. This means that the user has to make a change to a web file, force a sync, see if the change is accurate and then repeat the process. The home directories are hosted on Windows 2003, possibly Enterprise Edition in clustered configuration or a clustered set of Linux machines. We are still in the testing phase. Here is what I hope to get help with:
    1. (Most desirable)Grab the user profile from the server first if one does not exist locally, else grab a skel from the server or run a shell script (ideally on a server) to create links to the appropriate folders. As an extra touch give the links the default icons in the Finder.
    2. (Less desirable)Modify the skel of the local machine to have a minimal set of files and have a shell script to create the necessary links, etc.
    3. (Least desirable)Continue with current system. User preferences are not persistent between machines, user profiles may be cluttered and/or fragmented. Or forget about Mobile accounts all together (not very feasible because a requirement is that we need offline file access).
I know there has to be a way to accomplish this being BSD based and all. So once you've scratched you heads long enough, I'd entertain any ideas.

Niel - thank you! I finally got around to trying it this morning and it worked.
I had no clue that USER TEMPLATE folder existed! Unfortunately, there was more to it than just moving my model user preference folders over to the USER TEMPLATE folder, but with some trial and error, it finally worked out. I had to be very careful to get just the right files in there. Now my students won't be prompted to configure Firefox or have to "agree" to using PrintShop.
Since everything is all Network Accounts, I used a model network account's preferences which worked, although I notice her username is still embedded in some of the plist files that all users now have. Couldn't make that cause any errors though. One error in this regard was the keychain settings, but once I left those out of the User Template, it recreated itself on first login per each user.
I can't thank you enough. I may just make a habit out of posting on forums.

  • No longer can point home directory to external drive

I am having a problem where my Mac stopped using the correct users' home directories on an external Firewire drive. It insists on using home directories on the main disk.
First some background: I have two drives. "Drive 1" is inside my Mac Mini and has the operating system on it. "Drive 2" is an external Firewire drive and contains all users' home directories. Some months ago, I moved all the home directories to the external drive using steps similar to what's described on this page. Everything was fine for several months:
    http://maczealots.com/articles/home/
My troubles began this week when I unmounted Drive 2 as part of during some troubleshooting I was doing to get an external device to mount. I solved that problem, but since re-connecting Drive 2, it insists on using a home directory on Drive 1 in this location:
    /Drive 1/Volumes/Drive 2/Users/user
    ("Volumes" is a hidden directory.)
The location I want it to use is this (and indeed, this is what is set in the NetInfo Manager):
    /Volumes/Drive 2/Users/user
I also noticed in Disk Utility that the mount point for Disk 2 is "/Volumes/Disk 2 1" When it should be "/Volumes/Disk 2" That is, there's an extra "1" at the end of the name. I read else where that the mount point can get messed up when the computer tries to a unmounted disk.
I have already used Disk Utility to repair permissions on Drive 1 (Disk 2) has "ignore permissions" enabled) and to run a "Repair Disk."
mac mini duo-core (intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Yes.
You must format your external drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
You can select this drive on the iMovie import screen.
For events already in your Event Library, you must move them from within iMovie. Click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK and command-drag to the external disk icon in the Event Library List.
