Desktop icons covered up by dock

this is something that is so annoying, that i must have overlooked a setting somewhere. whenever anything downloads or saves to my desktop, some of the icons are overlapped by the dock.
my dock is fixed, with magnification off.
i have 3 columns of icons on my desktop. as items are added, the OS puts them at the bottom of the columns. the end result is that my desktop looks like crap, with icons partially tucked beneath the dock.

thanks for responding. i tried your suggestion, but it didn't seem to work. when i download a file, for example, to the desktop, the os still tucks it under the dock. it's almost like it wants to use every bit of space in that lower right corner!
I can't see the ds file, or a way to make it visible. i did have a problem earlier, and apple support suggested zapping the pram. the problem i had was that any open application in the dock would not show a new window when clicked on. for example, if mail.app was running, but the message window was closed, clicking on the mail icon from the dock wouldn't open the message window. ditto for safari, itunes, etc. even clicking on the finder icon wouldn't open a finder window.
i don't have that problem now. but it all seems like strange icon behavior in my book

  • Desktop icons non responsive but dock and menu bar ok

I have at times had a situation where my dock is accessible and the top menu also accessible but non of the icons on the desktop can be accessed. You can click on them all you want and they do not respond. Even the disk drive (which I have displayed on the desktop) can not be accessed through the desktop but it can through the Finder via the dock. The only way to have access to the desktop icons is to go to "force quit" via the apple menu and then select "Relaunch Finder" which after complete will allow the icons on the desktop to be accessible. Does anyone know what the problem is so that I don't have to go through this each time I let the computer sit for a while?

Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.
Here is Apple's take on the subject:

  • Desktop icon covered by hd icon

Macbook air, Mavericks os. since I've updated to mavericks, Ive noticed the MacIntosh Harddrive Icon on the desktop (which does change location), is covering icons of images underneath it. This is not only unusual, but it makes viewing the filename difficult. Why is this happening....it makes no diference how I arrange the icons on the desktop, one ends up under the HD Icon.

You can have the icons auto sort.  Under the View mnu go to Sort, and then select how you would like them to be sorted..

  • Missing desktop icons, menu bar and dock

I have a my G5 Dual 2.7 Ghz, I am currently using Tiger 10.4.10. As of yesterday it had been running great, but this morning I turned it on and logged in as usual. The problem is it the computer only shows my desktop image, but no menu bar, icons, dock, etc..
I have re started it 3 times with no luck. Thank you so much before hand for any input that might be helpful

Have you tried a bit of basic maintenance?
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:

By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Desktop Icon gone from Dock, How do I get it back?

I accidentally removed my "view desktop" icon from the dock. I can't seem to find where/how I can replace the view desktop icon back into my dock. Please help. Thanks.

If you mean the Dashboard icon. It would be in your Applications folder, just drag it to the Dock. Is this the one you're talking about? Because the Finder icon can't be accidentally removed from the Dock and there is no "Desktop" icon on your Dock.
There is a Desktop on the Sidebar of your Finder window and you could accidentally delete that. If that's the case go to your Home folder and drag it back to the Sidebar. Or go to Finder menu >> Preferences >> Sidebar and check mark it.

  • HT3964 How can I get back the desktop icons?

I am forced to start up my iMac 10.6.8 using PRAM. However when it starts up there are no desktop icons showing, only the dock shows which gives me limited internet access. Can anyone help me recover desktop icons?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Have just installed Mavericks and restarted the MacBook Pro. That was 3 hours ago and after logging in, I got my wallpaper and dock, but none of my desktop icons, just the spinning coloured wheel. It's been like that for 2 hours. Is this normal? What should I do, please?
I tried holding the on/off switch down to make it shut down, but when I turned it back on again, the same thing happened and none of the keys etc makes any difference.
    HELP!!!! Please.

No, what you're experiencing is not normal.
Try booting whilst holding down the Shift key - this will allow you to boot into Safe Mode, disabling third-party kernel extensions, etc. Your Mac will be slow to boot and will operate sluggishly. That's normal. If you can get in using Safe Mode then you have some start-up item that doesn't play well with Mavericks.

  • Desktop icon in column view and docking bar

Hi, I had an icon for the desktop on the left side of my column view since I got my machine. I got the bright idea today to move it to my dock and it went "poof!" when I tried to move it. I can't undo it and I am lost without my desktop view to rename my screen shots. Help! How do I place the desktop icon on my column view again and it is possible to put it on my dock?

    You're Welcome zubie!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • 3 "Desktop" icons in Favorites Dock Item...

Anyone know how to remove the extra "Desktop" from the favs list?
    They poped up recently....

    The stack is this one:
    http://www.beyondmac.com/2007/11/22/add-recentfavorite-items-stack-to-dock/
Each time you run the Terminal command in that link, a new favorites folder is added to your Dock. So if you run it again, perhaps because you didn't notice the results the first time, you add a second folder, and so on. That's probably how you ended up with multiple favorites folders in your Dock.

  • Glitch with desktop icons including cursor

How to describe it? How to get rid of it?
Let's see - on my iMac desktop in Finder. Desktop icons including dock icons, pull down menu words and the cursor are covered by a square shadow of "bits" that look like rows of lines. A folder icon on the desktop is covered by a rectangle approx. 1.5" wide and 1" high. It's composed of approx. 12 rows of lines across and 6 rows of lines down. Particularly annoying is the square of lines that is attached to the cursor. This square goes along with the cursor.
    Has anyone seen this before?
It's a glitch that could be a bug of some sort or have I made a change in Preferences that I didn't notice?
    Any help is appreciated!

  • The Finder Icon "jumped" off my dock..how do i get it back?

Hi. I just got my new MacBook earlier today and I was moving some of the dock icons around and somehow the Finder icon "jumped" off the dock and is now no longer selectable. It just sits on the desktop and hovers above all other programs but behind the dock. I can't click on it or move it or even select it using the lassoo, so any ideas what I could try? Or anybody have a clue what happened/has this happened to anyone before?
    here's a picture:
It's not like it's something I could've manually removed. I've tried moving the finder before and you can't do it. (this isn't my first OS X mac)
I'm just as baffled as you are.
