Desktop icons created when program is started

I have just purchased a new mac desktop and I have loaded a few programs onto it. Everytime I open a program from my dock a desktop icon is created relative to that program. Very annoying when I want to keep my desktop clean.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

Try this link to a Google search on the proper way to install Programs/Apps on OS X.
You may have to just install the programs, which I don't think you ever really did.

I just installed Lightroom 5. It will not open. I have clicked on the desktop icon as well as the start menu button with no results. What am I missing?

I had the same problem, and I believe it is caused by having the Creative Cloud application doing the updating of LR.  I "fixed" the problem by:
    1. Uninstall Lightroom
    2. Download the stand-alone LR 5.6 installer from Product updates
    3. Install LR 5.6 using the stand-alone installer, instead of using the Creative Cloud application.

  • Desktop icons disappear when disconnecting LED display

My problem started when I installed snow leopard....now every time i disconnect my laptop from the LED display the icons disappear from the desktop and i have to relaunch finder from the force quit menu. The same happens when i connect my laptop back to the display.
Also the widgets appear out of place and some of them off screen on the laptop
    Any advice?
    Thanks

I had a similar problem when I used my 20 inch monitor, while my 24 was being fixed. When you disconnect it seems to remember where things are in the wrong size, or aspect. Restarting or force quitting applications doesn't help either. You would have to remember to transfer everything over to the MBP display and resize before disconnecting. But some apps that you haven;t run recently would still mess up still mess up.
The way I worked it out was to put the display icon in the menu bar. If things were "off Screen" I would go to the display icon and change the aspect/size. That forces the monitor currently connected to reset, then you can set it back to the resolution you want. I think you only have to do that once, not for every application.
    Hope that works for you!

  • How to zero array within loop that displays 3 numbers when program is started?

i am starting a loop that displays 3 pieces of data that is updated throught the cycle. At the end it displaces the last result. When the program is run again i need these values to be reset. This is a loop inside of a loop inside of a loop.

The most evident approach is just to use initialise array function on the first iteration of your loop, but... There are really many loops in your vi, so may be its better to use zeros as defaul values for your array indicaters and before each run apply a "Reset to Defaults" method. But for this you must make some kind of a higher level vi which will perform "reset to defaults" method on your vi as this method doesn't work in run-time (or may be I'm wrong?)...

  • 1-Desktop icons dissapear when any application opens

When I open any application, all of the files and folders on my desktop dissapear, even the hard drives or CD's I have mounted. When I click on the desktop again witht he applications open, they come back, but when I click on any open application, they dissapear again. I have used Tech tool to optimize, and check everything, Diskwarrior to rebuild the directory, and Disk utility to repair privilegeds or permissions. Nothing is ever found wrong, and nothing fixes it. It does not matter what application I open, the icons dissapear.

  • Desktop Manager opens when computer is started up

Does anyone know how to not have the Desktop Manager open on start up?
I use a laptop and start the computer often.  I do not always want the Desktop Manager to open as it takes too much time to open.  I cannot find a setting that will allow me to turn this feature off.  Help!

  • How to create a Windows 8.1 Desktop icon from the Metro/Start and/or Search Tool?

I'm a Desktop user, but often find myself needing to go to the Metro/Start and Search Tool to find programs and App(let)s in order to run them.  However, after doing this several times for many programs, I find myself wanting to create
Desktop icons to run the programs more easily.  Is there a way to do this from the Metro/Start Icon and/or Search Tool results?
If not, Microsoft, please consider adding the ability to do this.
It would be very nice if this ability supported all of the icon types shown in the Metro/Start, Search Tool, and Control Panel interfaces, e.g.: Metro Apps, Desktop Programs, Charms, and Control Panel Applets.
Currently, there is a way to pin the Metro/Start Icon to the Desktop, but the Taskbar will get very cluttered with even only a handful icons.
It would be very nice if the desktop icon created by this also supported the context options that the program/app(let) now shows as Tasks when the icon is pinned to the Desktop Taskbar.
Additionally, it would be nice if I could also simply drag a Pinned Taskbar icon onto the Desktop area, again, retaining it's Tasks as context menu options when the Desktop Taskbar icon is right clicked.
This ability would be very helpful for people needing to get to programs and App(let)s, without having to resort the Metro/Start and Search Tool, because when there are a lot of Metro/Start icons, I have well over a hundred icons, it
can be very hard to find one simply eye-balling lot.  The Search feature is much better, provided I know the name to look for and can remember it.
Finally, this ability would be very helpful, because the kinds of desktop shortcut icons that I can create using the New Shortcut option, assuming that can I find the program/App(let)'s name and path information, do not support the context options
that the icons could in Windows 7 when an icon is created while installing the program.

    Hello everyone,
I have got a system which i have coded, all working etc etc, just wondering if it is possible if someone could help me or give me ideas on how i would go about creating a desktop icon that when double clicked like any other icon it runs the main method and starts up my system
never done this before so any suggestions would be very much appreciated
    Thanks in advance

    1. The easiest way - write a *.bat file (assumes windoze)
    Open up Notepad and write;-
"java MyMainClass" and save it as "MyJavaExec.bat" (or any name you like) in the same folder as your java application where MyMainClass has the entry point signature 'public static void main(..'
    2. Right click on this and choose the option Create Shortcut.
    3. Drag this shorcut from its current file window to the desktop
    4. Double click on it
    5. You can also right click on this shortcut and change the icon for a more professional finish
(There are other options - but this is the easiest way)

  • Desktop icons wont open when clicked on

Hi to all Happy New Year just installed Leopard on both of my computers- on Macbook -desktop icons open when clicked on but not on my Imac computer- tried restarting numerous time any suggestions. Any thoughts. Kevin

I have a friend that has the same problem. Seems related to plugging in an external monitor. When she unplugs, her Desktop icons are unresponsive and can't be clicked on. In the Terminal I issue:
    killall Finder
and that temporarily fixes the problem. Wondering if there is a permanent fix. Perhaps I'll delete the Finder .plist.

  • No desktop icon

I was going to run WD Smartware from my desktop icon, and when I did it said I neede an upgrade.I ran the upgrade, and my desktop icon has disappeared. I went into Windows---->Start---->Programs and selected the WD smartware program, expecting to see a "create desktop shortcut" option, but all I got was "Do you want to uninstall WD Smartware?" How can I re-create a desktop shortcut?

Hi  Try this method to place ANY program Shortcut on your Desktop ... Start > Programs > Western Digital > WD SmartWare     - in this folder right click on "WDSmartWare.exe"     - select "Open File Location"       (if "Open File Location" is not an option then select Properties instead > Shortcut Tab > Open File Location Button)     - in the folder that opens right click on "WDSmartWare.exe"     - select "Create Shortcut"     - in the dialog box that shows up click "Yes" to create a Shortcut on your Desktop  Hope this helps, if so then please click the "Accept as Solution" button below

  • Where are iPhoto library, iTunes, Safari bookmarks, desktop icons...?

When installing Leopard, my main internal "Macintosh HD" (where all my programs are loaded) didnt show as an option, so I installed on my secondary HD. Leopard runs OK from here, BUT, I cant find my iPhoto library, iTunes, Safari bookmarks, desktop icons, and the programs in the dock no longer show. Any advice?

Sadly, this is still an issue.
I guess plan A would be to find all the settings I am now missing and point the various programs to them. Though not sure how to do either of those things.
If this is difficult, then plan B is to "boot back into ...Tiger drive" and reload Leopard in drive bay 1 as originally intended. Again, not sure how to do that - and why it didnt work the first time.
Pls let me know if you think this is the right plan, and if so, what would the steps required look like.

  • Desktop acting weird when using External Monitor.

    Hey guys,
Just wondering if people have been having this weird "problem" when using an external monitor on OS X Mavericks. Though not really an issue that makes the OS/Mac usable, it's more of a quality of life thing (and it's really annoying for someone who likes things to be where I put them).
Anyways, the problem is that when I use my external monitor when at home, I have it set as the main display while the monitor on my MacBook Pro 15" acts as the extended/secondary monitor. No problems in functionality, BUT, the icons on my desktop always move while my external monitor is in use.
I usually do my work while using my external monitor and I use my desktop as my initial location to save my work files before moving them to an appropriate folder. However, revert back to not using the external monitor, everything just gets muddled up on top of eachother, stuff (sometimes) get missplaced and it just becomes a hassle to rearrange my desktop to how it was before.
tl:dr: desktop icons move when I use my external monitor as my main display.
So does anyone know if this is a problem that can be fixed, or is it an issue my monitor being a 3rd party model and old?
