Desktop icons slow to display

I have Win7 (64-Bit) and lately the desktop icons are slow to display. They start with white boxes and then slowly they fill-in with the correct icon.
I tried the following, and now the icons show right away, but then the screen blinks (for lact of a better word) and the icons show 'white' and then in a second or two they return to the regular (colored) icons.  Anything else I can do to
make the icons appear as fast as they did orginally and stay that way rather than turning "white" and then changing back to the regular colored icons?
Hope it wasn't caused by installing MSE (removed AVG which was acting up).
Thank you.
P.S. I am not receiving emai notifications when someone adds reply. Do I hae to check something? I do not see an Advise button.
=================
1. Close all folder windows that are currently open.
2. Launch Task Manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence, or by running taskmgr.exe.
3. In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
4. Click the End process button when asked for confirmation.
5. From the File menu of Task Manager, select New Task (Run…)
6. Type CMD.EXE, and click OK
7. In the Command Prompt window, type the commands one by one and press ENTER after each command:
CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
DEL IconCache.db /a
EXIT
8. In Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…)
9. Type EXPLORER.EXE, and click OK.

I already put this question in other forums:
"Why the shortcuts on desktop may be repainted at startup of Win 7? At boot or startup of Windows 7, all of my shortcuts appear correct on the desktop, but after a few seconds they will change to white pages, and are then repainted with their original
design. This is a visual annoyance. It is possible to avoid this 'repaint'?"
The problem has nothing to do with the IconCache.db rebuild or resize.
After a little work with the Windows 7 services the result is as follows:
If you do not use the Home Group you can disable the following services (after saving: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services):
Go to: System Services (services.msc);
search for: Computer Browser and DISABLE it;
search: Server and DISABLE it.
That's All folks!
Enjoy!

  • Desktop icons won't display on Desktop

    I recently installed a couple of what seemed to be interesting menubar items (MenuStrip and Isolator). Shortly after (not concurrent with) I lost the icons that show up on the Desktop of files in the Desktop folder. The files are all intact - nothing lost, they just don't show up on the Desktop.
    I've removed these two applications using AppZapper, run the new DiskWarrior 4.1.1, repaired the permissions, run repair disk from Disk Utility, reinstalled Leopard from the DVD, and now I'm at a loss on how to bring back those icons.
    I'm running OS X 10.5.5 on an Intel Mac Mini. I use a Newer MiniStack as my boot drive. If I boot from the internal drive (which is virtually virgin from the day of purchase), the Desktop icons from that user are displayed as they should be.
    Is there someway to "rebuild" the Desktop or otherwise bring things back to normal?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Tod

    Added info:
    I also recently tried using Path Finder 5. It also has been "shredded."
    I was just poking around my Desktop and found that clicking on the Desktop itself while another app (say like Safari) is frontmost, clicking won't bring the Finder to the front. Sounds like something left over from Path Finder, though I deleted all its prefs using AppZapper.

  • My desktop icons are not displaying properly

    After powering up my MacBook Pro, some of my desktop icons show as archives instead of an actual pic of the icon.  I have restarted and that does not change the icons.

    Thanks abwhite57 for the suggestion.  I was able to fix the problem before seeing your reply.
    As I went thru the process of cleaning up the desktop icons, I noticed that moving one to the trash or to the finder would change the thumnail view back to it's proper appearance.  So an icon would go from one that said "archive" back to thumnail view of it's webpage.  So I then dragged the icon back onto the desktop.  Problem solved.

  • Win 7 X64 preset desktop icons slow to respond on HP Pavillion dv6000

    Hello,
    I have an HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop, and recently I have been having issues with my preset Desktop and Start Menu Icons (Computer, Documents, Recycle bin, etc.) taking forever to open upon clicking (if they open at all). I've run CCleaner Pro a few times,  to no avail. However, it does work for about a couple of hours after a computer restart.
    Does anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Good Morning @mcast1286 ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
    It is a terrific place to find answers and suggestions!
    For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
    I gather that your Desktop and Start Menu items are taking a long time to respond.  You have ran CCleaner Pro but it has not resolved the issue.
    Here is a link to Improving System Performance without Adding Memory for HP Notebook PCs (Windows Vista). Although this is for Vista the steps will be the same for Windows 7.
    Have you checked for viruses or malware?
    MS Malicious Software Removal Tool
    This is not a recommendation but people have has success with running Malwarebytes  malware also.
    Have you ran MS Fix It?
    You can also try this step  to help with any files that may have become corrupted.
    Go to the command prompt and right click and run as administrator
    Type sfc /scannow and press enter
    This will scan for corrupted files and try to repair or replace them.
    It wil take some time so be patient.
    If the issue should still be there  I suggest trying a Windows restore back to a known good date or a full recovery back to factory if that did not help.  There are links at the bottom of the HP document I provide to assist you with both of those processes.
    Best of Luck!

  • Adobe Customization Wizard X issue PDF icon and disable display in browser after installation

    I have used the Adobe Customization Wizard X wizard to setup a .MTS files for the custom install. When this is installed using SCCM 2012 with command (msiexec /q /i "\\Server\Share\AcroRead.msi" TRANSFORMS="\\Server\Share\AcroRead.mst") this all works fine but all PDFs on the machine that gets this deployment (Windows 7 x64 or Windows XP x86) the icons for the .pdf don't show the Adobe icon they show the generic Windows icon when the program is not assigned but still work to launch Adobe reader. I have tried to unistall and reinstall but still the same resaults. If I install the .msi with no .mst the icon shows up just fine. So it has to be something with when you use the customization wizard or the .mst. I have also tried assigning .PDF to another program and the icon changes to that program and assign it back and no icon. Also if I set Display PDF in browser = Disabled this setting does not stick. I have just installed via Adobe not using SCCM via command line I get the same resaults.
    I have only selected these customizations:
         Installation Options:
    Silently (No interface)
    Suppress reboot
         Shortcuts
    No desktop Icon
           EULA
    Suppress display of End User License Agreement (EULA)
         Online Features
    Disable all updates
    Disable Help > Purchases Adobe Acrobat
    Disable Product Improvement Program
    Display PDF in browser = Disabled
    Disabled  All Acrobat.com access

    Hi Ben,
    Here's what I am trying to accomplish I had Acrobat Standard v10.1.4 scripted so I can deploy it to a Citrix Server (XENAPP6) via SCCM 2007 I have at least 50 licenses of Acrobat Standard deployed to 50 users. All of our Citrix Servers have Adobe Reader v10.* installed as our default pdf viewer. There are other apps that are deployed to this Citrix Server and I wanted to make sure that pdf files open on Adobe Reader instead of Acrobat Standard.
    I had to change the installer tables directly so I don't have to get it re-scripted to use this command line. Is it a best practice not to change the isntaller table?
    msiexec /i "\\source\Acrobat10\AcroStan.msi" transforms="\\source\Acrobat10\AcroStan.mst" LEAVE_PDFOWNERSHIP=”YES” /qb /norestart
    Thanks a lot for your help I'm looking forward to hear from you.

  • Removing desktop icon of NFS mounted drive

    Hi,
    I have an NFS mounted drive (on a linux server) on my mac mini, running OS 10.4. I don't want the icon to appear on the desktop. Is there any way to remove this?
    The reason is as follows:
    - the NFS mounted directory is of the form servername:/home which contains home directories for all the students. This is mounted to /Volumes/servername. The students home directories are set to /Volumes/servername/userid. Thus, in the finder, their home directory shows up correctly, and they can browse their network files.
    - However, /Volumes/servername is shown as a mounted disk icon on the desktop, and if students open this, they get a list of everyone's home directories, which they have to scroll through to reach their own home directory. This gives them immediate access to other people's home directories. Granted, these should all be locked and inaccessable to them, but if anyone has messed up their permissions, everyone will instantly be able to see that there is no red X by the home directory, and they can browse in.
    - I realise people can browse in anyway, through the Finder, but its just nice not to make it quite so obvious to them.
    So... any ideas on how to remove this desktop icon? Note that it needs to be removed for all users (a hundred or so students, logging in through LDAP).
    Thanks!
    Richard Grant
    Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    I have figured this out now...
    If you mount the directories at the point /home (or at least ask it to - in fact it mounts it somewhere in /private) then the desktop icon is not displayed by default.

  • Desktop icons not showing up for T60's and T61's

    We are having an issue with nearly half (we have a few hundred at out company) of our T60’s and T61’s where they do not show the desktop icons at boot up.  If they start the task manager and run explorer then everything pops up like normal.  But they will have to repeat this process every time they boot up.  We also tried having them turn off the wireless radio via the slider switch but that did not help.
    One fix we found was to go C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data  and copy the IconCache.db found there over the users IconCache.  This fixes the issue for 99% of the people who have this problem, but there are a few that continue to boot up to no desktop items.
    The only other fix we have found was to put explorer.exe in the start up folder.  This brings up a pop up of their My Documents at start up that they have to close but is much easier than going through the task manager to run explorer.
    We also have many T43’s and many Lenovo desktops from M-81, M-82, and M-88’s.  none of the desktops show this problem and we have not had this issue with any of the 43’s.
    The software packages are essentially the same for all of our systems.  The only difference being is that the desktops do not have VPN.

  • When installing itunes on PC with Windows Vista, the itunes program "took over" all of my desktop icons.

    When installing itunes of my PC with Windows Vista, the itunes program "took over" all of my desktop icons.  How can I install it so it doesn't do that?  Thanks!

    You can force Vista to rebuild the desktop icons by changing your monitor's color depth momentarily. In the display properties, change to 16-bit color. Then change back to 32-bit.

  • My system preferences have suddenly disappeared! I have the language and text icon but that is the only icon that is displayed! where have my system preferences gone and how do i get them back??

    I went to my system preferences today and they are all gone except for my language and text icon! I have the language and text icon but that is the only icon that is displayed! where have my system preferences gone and how do i get them back??

    Double click on the picture of the HD on your desktop, then look at the bottom of the window that opens.
    First check the S.M.A.R.T. status on your HD: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > in the panel at left, select the first item in the list/your HD mechanism > look atthe bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” or something more ominous like “Failing.”
    If S.M.A.R.T.status is "Verified," run Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > open Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.

    Have just installed Mavericks and restarted the MacBook Pro. That was 3 hours ago and after logging in, I got my wallpaper and dock, but none of my desktop icons, just the spinning coloured wheel. It's been like that for 2 hours. Is this normal? What should I do, please?
    I tried holding the on/off switch down to make it shut down, but when I turned it back on again, the same thing happened and none of the keys etc makes any difference.
    HELP!!!! Please.

    No, what you're experiencing is not normal.
    Try booting whilst holding down the Shift key - this will allow you to boot into Safe Mode, disabling third-party kernel extensions, etc. Your Mac will be slow to boot and will operate sluggishly. That's normal. If you can get in using Safe Mode then you have some start-up item that doesn't play well with Mavericks.

  • On wake up the wrong desktop appears with no desktop icons.

    Upon waking up computer, a different desktop appears with no icons.  I have to shut it down hard and reboot.  Doestn't happen all the time but most times it does.  Any suggestions on to resolve.

    Hi, I had a similar "intermittent" problem. Desktop picture was correct, but no desktop icons after waking up. I found by powering off/on the monitor, seemed to refresh the display and show the icons. However the problem no longer exists, but I haven't changed any settings. I know this probably doesn't help that much, but it may prevent you having to shut down and reboot. Alan.

  • [Solved] wy i can place xfce4 desktop icons in a "grid" only?

    hello archers!
    im in love with xfce4 DE, but the annoying thing is that i can place the desktop icons only in a invisible "grid" of tiles.
    i changed the display manager to gdm, but it didn't help. i tryed changing the WM, but didn't not find out how to do that.
    Yes, i dont understand how DE's working internal, cause there are so many parts, as DM, WM, session-manager, and so on, which confuses me.
    So how i can place my icons individually on the desktop?
    Thanks in advance!!

    Another way to adjust the desktop grid size settings and more.

    HIDDEN CUSTOMISATIONS
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If you're using the icon view, and would like to change how the text looks,
    you have three things you can change: the opacity (transparency) of the
    rounded text background, the color of the rounded text background, and the
    color of the text itself.
    You'd want to add something like this to your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file:
    style "xfdesktop-icon-view" {
    XfdesktopIconView::label-alpha = 75
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-label-alpha = 100
    XfdesktopIconVIew::ellipsize-icon-labels = 1
    XfdesktopIconView::shadow-x-offset = 1
    XfdesktopIconView::shadow-y-offset = 1
    XfdesktopIconView::shadow-color = "#ff0000"
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-x-offset = 2
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-y-offset = 2
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-color = "#00ff00"
    XfdesktopIconVIew::cell-spacing = 6
    XfdesktopIconView::cell-padding = 6
    XfdesktopIconView::cell-text-width-proportion = 2.5
    base[NORMAL] = "#00ff00"
    base[SELECTED] = "#5050ff"
    base[ACTIVE] = "#0000ff"
    fg[NORMAL] = "#ff0000"
    fg[SELECTED] = "#ff0000"
    fg[ACTIVE] = "#ff0000"
    widget_class "*XfdesktopIconView*" style "xfdesktop-icon-view"
    The first three entries set the opacity of the rounded text background
    (allowed values are from 0 (totally transparent) to 255 (totally opaque),
    and whether or not unselected icons get their labels ellipsized
    (truncated) to fit on one line. (The 'selected-' version controls the
    opacity of icons that have been selected with the mouse.)
    The second six entries can be used to enable a text shadow to be painted
    with the icon labels. The offsets are in pixels. Setting them to 0 (the
    defaults) will disable the shadows entirely. Again, the 'selected-'
    versions apply to icons that have been selected with the mouse.
    The third four entries set spacing and sizing for individual icons on
    the grid. The 'cell-spacing' property specifies the spacing between each
    'cell' in the grid of icons. The 'cell-padding' property sets extra
    padding placed around each icon+text. The units for these two are in
    pixels. The 'cell-text-width-proportion' property specifies the maximum
    width of the text label underneat the icon, as a multiplier of the icon
    width (so for 30px icons, '2.5' would leave a 75px wide area underneath
    for the text).
    The fourth three entries set the color of the rounded text background.
    * NORMAL sets the color for the regular, unselected state.
    * SELECTED sets the color for when the icon is selected, and the desktop has
    keyboard/mouse focus.
    * ACTIVE sets the color for when the icon is selected, but the desktop does
    not have keyboard/mouse focus.
    The final three entries set the color of the label text. See above for the
    differences between NORMAL, SELECTED, and ACTIVE.
  • When I click the MFF desktop icon Firefox takes exactly 30 seconds to load, is that right?
    ''Duplicate post, continue here -'' [/questions/752057]
    I have just installed Firefox and it takes 30s from clicking the desktop icon to loading the home page. Tabs only take about 2s, is this right?
    IE loads in 2-3 s.
    The answers you have got above are correct.
    However, if your FF otherwise feels snappy when browsing - and a second restart (aka. warm start) of FF is much faster than the first - then you could try my suggestions here: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/762446#answer-119951
    The slow load time on a cold start is an old "classic" problem for FF.
    Mozilla may work on a solution or not, but meanwhile I'm happy with this work around.
